Carine Roitfeld styles the Steven Meisel lensed Pirelli calendar 2015

What we’ve learnt today is that if you’ve ever edited an edition of Vogue, you can pretty much rule the world. Earlier today we told you that American Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour got one heck of a big promotion, and now we are telling you that former Vogue Paris editor in chief Carine Roitfeld has been put in charge of styling the highly anticipated and hugely coveted Pirelli calendar 2015. We know we say it every year, but we really think the 2015 edition is going to be the best one yet! The calendar has been shot by the super-talented Steven Meisel, and features some of the hottest models such as Victoria’s Secret Angel Adriana Lima (above), Joan Smalls, Isabeli Fontana, Karen Elson, Raquel Zimmermann, “plus size” model Candice Huffine, and Natalia Vodianova – who gave birth merely a few days before the photoshoot. Not that anyone would be able to tell from her incredible figure… WWD has a few sneaky peeks of the pics for us, but we’ll keep you posted as soon as more images from the calendar emerge. Are you pleased with what you see so far?

Carine Roitfeld reveals “red” theme for this year’s amfAR Cinema Against AIDS fashion show

For the third year in a row, former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld will be hosting a fashion show for the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS gala in Cannes. And just like the two fashion shows before it, this year’s has a very distinctive theme… Carine’s first fashion show had a “black” theme, while last year’s, which was dedicated to Elizabeth Taylor, was all about gold. This year however, Carine is paying tribute to Marilyn Monroe, and has chosen the colour “red” as the theme for the fashion show. Expect to see gowns from the likes of Alexander McQueen, Alexander Wang, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Roberto Cavalli, Chanel, Christian Dior, Christopher Kane, Fendi, Giorgio Armani, Givenchy, Gucci and Tom Ford on the catwalk, all of which will be auctioned off to raise money for the wonderful and worthwhile cause. This year’s event will be chaired by John Travolta, Milla Jovovich, Harvey Weinstein and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy. amfAR’s annual Cinema Against AIDS gala will take place in Cannes on Thursday May 22nd. We’re excited to see the events unfold… [WWD] [Image]

“She was the easiest model we’ve had,” Carine Roitfeld on photographing Kim Kardashian

We think Carine Roitfeld singing your praises is one of the best slightly belated birthday presents ever, so we bet Kim Kardashian would have been pretty chuffed yesterday if she just so happened to be reading Time Out magazine. Carine Roitfeld talked to the mag about the latest issue of her CR Fashion Book, and we loved what she had to say about one of our fave reality stars. Or since she is now officially engaged, should we say the future Mrs Kanye West? For those of you who think Kim doesn’t do much, Carine sets the record straight about her talents… “First of all she’s beautiful – and in fashion, that is a talent you know,” Carine began. “She was also a very sweet person, a hard worker. You don’t see her in parties drinking loads of alcohol. She’s controversial, but so was Marilyn Monroe and I always like controversial people. I hope the issue will be a good souvenir for her and her baby. “She was brave because with Karl Lagerfeld shooting, we always finish very late – we finished at 2am in the morning, and she was very pregnant. She had one guy for hair, one guy for make-up – no extensions or lashes – and for her it must have been like being naked, and she accepted everything. I don’t think normally she would wear those sort of clothes – I’ve never seen her in a Comme des Garcons jumpsuit or a basketball jacket, but she said yes to everything. She was the easiest model we’ve had. And when we put a mask on her face, she didn’t say anything.’ Aww – you can’t get bigger praise than that, surely? The third issue of the CR Fashion Book is out now should you wish to see […]

When My Fashion Life met Carine Roitfeld

When we were invited to The May Fair Hotel for a tête-à-tête with former Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Paris, Carine Roitfeld, ahead of the release of her feature film, Mademoiselle C, a collective gasp was heard at HQ. The fashion documentary follows Roitfeld during the creation of her new magazine, CR Fashion Book. The idea of sharing the same breathing space as Karl Lagerfeld’s best friend and Tom Ford’s muse was dizzying, and we simply couldn’t swallow the sheer overload of Parisian polish we were about to be exposed to. Making our way to the ninth floor (after battling with a stubborn, A-lister proof lift) we finally entered the airy space, where the impeccably dressed name behind CR Fashion Book was waiting for us, a smile beaming across her face, her dainty silhouette wrapped in an extraordinary grey coat. Accompanied by director Fabien Constant, the mastermind behind Mademoiselle C, here are a few  nuggets of golden wisdom Roitfeld delivered, complete with an adorable French lilt: On her best fashion moment: “I will never forget the first time we saw Tom Ford. He called me, maybe 20 times, and I said ‘Who is Tom Ford? What is Gucci? What is a loafer? It’s Boring.’ And then I would say ‘No, we have no time. Call back, maybe next month.’ One day, he asked if he could visit me at the studio, and I said hmm, OK. We were sweating, because there is no AC (air-conditioning) in Paris and it was July. Tom Ford came in and I sat up in my chair and said, ‘Maybe we can help you for the next shoot’ because he was so charming. Working with Tom Ford and Gucci changed my career, and it’s just because Tom Ford came in and he was very sexy looking!” On […]

Carine Roitfeld turns designer and director for Mercedes Benz

Former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld has finally got her first designing gig, and she has lent her creative talents to none other than Mercedes Benz. We know what you’re thinking now, but no, she hasn’t designed a car. Not just yet anyway, although we would never rule anything out for her. But she has designed the stunning black dress which has been used for the brand new Mercedes Benz S-Class spring/summer 2014 international ad campaign, starring Sui He, which you can see above. “I think this car is very sober, chic and very expensive looking, so I was aiming to design something exactly the same for Sui He,” Carine said. “So, this dress has a perfect knee-length, it’s a perfect sweater, it’s black – something you can keep forever, but with a bit of a sensual look, because it very closely follows her whole body. It’s very sculptural in a simple way – exactly like the car.” That’s not all though; Carine also joined forces with Stephen Gan to direct the film which you can see below. Oh and one more thing; she also commissioned a very special pair of Mercedes Benz shoes which were made especially for the campaign by Gianvito Rossii. Talk about giving your all! What do you think of Carine’s debut designing project? http://youtu.be/Ud0BYlbjLws [Vogue] [Image]

Carine Roitfeld and her daughter pose for Givenchy’s “family values” AW13 campaign

Is there a better mother-daughter activity than posing for a luxury fashion House’s latest ad campaign? Carine Roitfeld and her gorgeous daughter Julia Restoin Roitfeld (although we wouldn’t be surprised if they were mistaken for sisters!) are dressed up in their Givenchy finery for Riccardo Tisci’s Givenchy autumn/winter 2013 ad campaign. They are also joined by Amanda Seyfried (not surprising since she is the new face of its Very Irresistible fragrance) and Dalianah Arekion. Lensed by photography Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, the theme of the new season campaigns is apparently love and family values. “The reality of someone like Carine with her daughter showing real love or Quim with Amanda is very special to me,” Riccardo Tisci said. “All of them, including the models, are real gypsies in their own life. They are never in one place. They travel the world. It is a real relationship, not only physically, but also with a content even when far away.” A breathtaking ad campaign with a great message to convey! Carine Roitfeld going for gold at this year’s amfAR Gala in Cannes

If you loved that sparkling 24 carat gold Zac Posen for Magnum dress, then we think you’re going to like this year’s amfAR Cinema Against Aids Gala very much! The event, which will take place in Cannes next month, will once again be organised by Ms Carine Roitfeld, so prepare to be blown away – especially since it’s the milestone 20th anniversary! Carine’s debut show last year was all about the black ensembles, but this time around the theme is “gold”, which she said was inspired by the late Elizabeth Taylor. “I picked the gold theme because gold is extraordinary,” Carine said. “Since it is the 20th year of this event, I thought people should walk away with an incredible memory. “For me, this is really a tribute to Elizabeth Taylor. When you think of her in ‘Cleopatra,’ you have this very powerful image of gold and beauty.” We’re excited to see what some of the biggest names in fashion (from the likes of Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Tom Ford, Versace, Michael Kors and more) have in store for us. Carine Roitfeld to launch her own fragrance?

From one fragrance story to another this morning… fashion’s busiest woman (we think Karl Lagerfeld currently holds the ‘fashion’s busiest man’ crown!) rumour has it that Carine Roitfeld might be releasing her very own perfume! So just to confirm, since leaving her post as editor-in-chief of French Vogue at the end of 2010, Carine will have launched her own CR Fashion Book, collaborated on a make-up range with MAC and dressed the Barneys windows among other things… not to mention taking on a brand new job as Global Fashion Director of Harper’s Bazaar. Phew – just making sure we got all that in there! Details are few and far between at the moment; we don’t know who Carine will be creating the fragrance with just yet, but we will of course keep you posted. Carine Roitfeld becomes Global Fashion Director of Harper’s Bazaar

Carine Roitfeld, who we may start referring to as Superwoman with all the projects she has taken on lately, has just been revealed as the brand new Global Fashion Director of Harper’s Bazaar! Congrats! The former ed-in-chief of Vogue Paris will be collaborating with Stephen Gan, creative director of Harpers’ Bazaar US, on several stories a year, and we can expect to see her first contribution in the March 2013 issues of all 26 editions. Impressive stuff! “I am thrilled to be contributing to Bazaar, a brand with a rich history of creativity,” Carine said. “Working with Stephen and a roster of talented photographers will be a wonderful collaboration and one that will give these stories a truly global audience.” We can’t wait to see what she brings to the table. When does she find time to sleep though? Maybe she is getting tips from Karl Lagerfeld!

Carine Roitfeld turns model for Barney’s

Hearing a cliché can be stomach turning for some of us, but when a cliché materialises, we can’t help but fall in love. The cliché in question is ‘beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder’ – for some a euphemism to distract from the ugly truth, but for me, it means what it says Different guises of the Pretty-Ugly revolution in fashion increase by admiration, and respect for fashion, every day. When I learned that 25-year-old geek, David Carp – the man behind the Tumblr phenomenon – had jumped out from behind the screen and bagged a starring role in the latest Uniqlo ‘s New York Faces campaign, the ‘geek chic’ cliché materialised. Smart equates to sexy (well we’re not so sure about the latter in Carp’s case, more cute) has always been the standing argument, and we heart campaigns and editorial shoots that make us sit up and take notice. So when news broke that muse of the moment, Carine Roitfeld, was to take centre stage in front, and behind the camera lens as she styled and starred in Barney’s fall campaign, my heart skipped a beat. Famed for her feline, smoky-eyed looks and a terribly brave resignation from the BIGGEST job in fashion, I love the new facet this adds to this multi-talented doyenne’s diamond-cut career. Appearing in one image embracing her son, the result is striking and depicts a beautiful maternal bond accented by Roitfeld’s atypical aesthetic. If fashion is the seed of controversy and fuel for the unconventional, then transgender model Lea T and androgynous Australian male model, Andrej Pejic were born to do this. Lip locked with Kate Moss on the cover of Love magazine’s ‘Androgyny Chic’ issue, and gently head locking a shirted Adonis in Givenchy’s fall 2010 campaign;  T’s ‘anti supermodel’ perfectly […]

Has Carine Roitfeld got a new job?

Who will replace Carine Roitfeld?

So Carine’s gone, and there’s only one question on everyone’s lips – who will replace her? While the fashion world waits for Vogue Paris to announce who will be filling Roitfeld’s well-heeled shoes (she’s nothing if not a sky-scraper expert), speculation is spreading like wild fire – and there’s a few names cropping up rather frequently. Without further ado, we bring you Roitfeld’s possible, probable and ever-promising replacements… 1. Emannuelle Alt Who: Fashion director at Vogue Paris Why: Having been the Fashion Director of Vogue Paris for 10 years and working under Carine since 2001, Emannuelle’s experience – including a stint at Mixte and five years as editor in chief of 20 Ans – stands her in good stead to replace her former boss. 2. Virginie Mouzat Who: Fashion director at Le Figaro Why: Mouzat’s been working as the fashion director at Le Figaro for a decade, in which time she’s transformed the style section of the French daily – apparently rumours are coming from a ‘well-placed source’ that she’s Roitfeld’s replacement. 3. Aliona Doletskaya Who: Former editor in chief of Russian Vogue Why: Aliona recently stepped down from her role as editor in chief at Russian Vogue after, much like Roitfeld, deciding to concentrate on personal projects following 13 years at the magazine. Perhaps a change of scenery is just what the fashion doctor ordered. 4. Giovanna Battaglia Who: Former D&G model and fashion editor at L’Uomo Vogue Why: Battaglia has just left L’Uomo Vogue – men’s Vogue Italia – and has just shot her first fashion story for Vogue Paris. But here’s the cincher – she also happens to be the girlfriend of Carine’s son. There’s still room for nepotism yet. 5. Dasha Zhukova Who: Former editor in chief at Pop Magazine Why? Though she may not be […]

Watch Carine Roitfeld revealed!

I can’t put my finger on it, but there is something missing in the Roitfeld documentary. It’s not “brilliant viewing.” It’s good, but not brilliant and the interviews seem a bit rushed. The strangest interview comes courtesy of Marc Jacobs who speaks for over two mins on why he went low key for his show and practically 2 seconds on why Carine is amazing. Don’t expect to be wowed by his thoughts on the editor either, most of it consists of the words, “great, great and you guessed it….great. The real highlight of the footage is hearing Carine speak and watching her move in her fabulous outfits. She rocks “extreme shoulders throughout! What do we learn about her? She’s shy, frank and an inspiration to many. (See after the jump for part 2 and 3)

Julia Restoin Roitfeld embraces the dark side in Dolce and Gabbana

Last year Carine Roitfeld staged an all-black runway show during the Cannes Film Festival, and it looks like the message she portrayed didn’t fall on deaf ears, as black dresses are still as prominent as ever on the prestigious red carpet. Taking mama Roitfeld’s advice was none other than her daughter Julia Restoin Roitfeld, who looked simply stunning in an off-the-shoulder lace Dolce and Gabbana dress as she attended the de Grisogono Party in Cannes. We guess access to a coveted designer wardrobe is one of the many perks of having the former Vogue Paris Editor in Chief as your mother. The elaborately detailed, sexy dress was the main focus of Julia’s look, opting to wear minimal accessories and leaving her sleek, shiny brunette locks flowing freely on her shoulders. Paris Fashion Week SS15 highlights from Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy, and Celine

George Clooney’s wedding wasn’t the only exciting thing that happened at the weekend. Paris Fashion Week continued to give us brand spanking new spring/summer 2015 collections from some of the biggest fashion designers in the world, and as usual, we saw some ground-breaking and memorable stuff. The Jean Paul Gaultier spring/summer 2015 show was an emotional one, as the designer showcased his last ever ready-to-wear collection. (He’ll be focusing all his attention on Couture from now on- click here for more deets.) So, it was only right that he went out with a bang, and that’s exactly what he did. JPG paid homage to all the industry figures who have shaped his impressive career; Grace Coddington, Franca Sozzani, Suzy Menkes, Carine Roitfeld, Emmanuelle Alt all ‘featured’ on the runway, making the show a truly unforgettable one just the way JPG intended. Elsewhere in Paris, Riccardo Tisci presented a great, mostly monochromatic collection for Givenchy (with the Kim Kardashian and little North West obviously sitting pretty on the front row to support an eyebrow-less Kendall Jenner), while Phoebe Philo was clearly inspired by the one and only Kate Bush (who is currently touring right here in Britain) for her latest Celine collection. Michelle Williams returns to Louis Vuitton for a third season!

Michelle Williams has returned for Louis Vuitton for a glorious third season – and we couldn’t be happier to see her beautiful face in the new ad campaigns! If it ain’t broke… The actress took time out of her busy Broadway schedule to pose for Peter Lindbergh’s camera lens for the autumn/winter 2014 Louis Vuitton ads, which were styled by none other than Carine Roitfeld. So much talent in one photoshoot! According to LV, the ad campaign aims to “hint at the woman behind the actress, revealing the intriguing balance of force and fragility that made Michelle Williams such a compelling choice as the face of Louis Vuitton.” Quite! As well as that, we can’t help but lust after the gorgeous bags which Michelle is showcasing; the Capucines and The Lockit – two of the hottest bags of the new season! Michelle is also debuting a longer hair style in the ads, which we noticed once we’d stopped drooling over the aforementioned pieces of arm candy. Does this mean she is growing out her hair? We love it! And we love the new Louis Vuitton campaign! Ps: Click here to check out the spring/summer 2014 ad campaign!

North West makes her modelling debut in head to toe Chanel

Little North West is only 13 months old, but has probably worn more designer threads than we will in our lifetime. Depressing, but probably true! Her latest designer ensemble comes courtesy of Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel, although she isn’t wearing it while on a stroll with her mummy Kim Kardashian or at home crawling or licking things she isn’t supposed to like most 13 month olds, oh no. She’s wearing head to toe Chanel for her first solo photoshoot for Carine Roitfeld’s CR Fashion Book. 13 months and already a solo fashion spread to her name – that has to be some sort of record even for Hollywood, right? Gorgeous little North West – or Nori as her parents like to call her – is wearing a stunning Chanel knitted cardigan that we really hope comes in bigger sizes too, and is posing alongside a covetable quilted 5.22 Chanel handbag with the Karl Lagerfeld quote “it’s never too early to care about fashion” at the top of the page. She was shot by Michael Avedon for the Legends feature which “celebrates the unconventional side of fashion icon status.” Love or hate the Kardashian klan, there’s no denying that North West is one seriously adorable baby who seems to have inherited her mother’s love of the camera. And by the looks of it, the camera loves her too! What do you think of North West’s modelling debut?

And those ladies are, in no particular order as they’re all pretty fabulous: Lady Gaga, Penelope Cruz and Linda Evangelista. Well played, HB! The ladies were selected by Harper’s Bazaar global fashion director Carine Roitfeld for being “iconic women” and were each photographed by Sebastian Faena. We don’t think we can cope with this much fabulousness all at once! Although each of the ladies have their own interviews and editorials, it was Lady Gaga’s interview with the legendary Mr Karl Lagerfeld that grabbed our attention. Here’s what she had to tell Kaiser Karl about her next “fashion trip”… “I’ve been recently enjoying looking far and wide for the best vintage fashion I can find. Michelle Williams returns for Louis Vuitton’s spring/summer 2014 ad campaign

Looks like Louis Vuitton knows when it’s onto a good thing, as Michelle Williams is back for another ad campaign! The gorgeous 33-year-old actress – and her enviably long stems and super-chic blonde pixie cut – are back for the Louis Vuitton spring/summer 2014 advertising campaign, and the message is pretty clear: go bright, or go home! (Actually you don’t have to go home if you aren’t feeling the brights, as Michelle has demonstrated that an understated  shade paired with simple jeans and a tee is a pretty killer combo too!) Michelle was photographed by Peter Lindbergh and styled by former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld, and is showcasing some of the new additions to the Louis Vuitton handbag family, as well as the true classics, including the Lockit, the Capucines and the Alma. Although the bags are the clear stars of the campaign images, we have to give the props some appreciation too – we love how Michelle has shunned the ordinary chair and decided to rest on a bicycle and inside an LV trunk instead. That’s our girl! Click here to check out Michelle’s ad campaign for the Louis Vuitton autumn/winter 2013 collection, too.
