Karl Lagerfeld’s Coco Chanel film to coincide with Dallas show

It’s pretty safe to say that we’re going to love anything that Karl Lagerfeld directs, and we think his brand new short film about the one and only Coco Chanel is going to be right up there with our favourites. The latest short film, entitled The Return, was written and directed by Kaiser Karl, the release of which will coincide with the Paris-Dallas 14 Métiers d’Art show which will take place in the Lone Star State. The film will depict Coco Chanel re-opening her Couture space in 1954, receiving criticism from the French press, and eventually working with Neiman Marcus among other things. The coveted lead role of Coco Chanel has gone to Charlie Chaplin’s daughter Geraldine Chaplin – and we think the casting has been spot on! Some familiar Chanel faces such as Anna Mouglalis, Lady Amanda Harlech and Rupert Everett will also be making an appearance, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled for them. Will we see his kitty cat Choupette make a cheeky little cameo? Only time will tell! The Return will debut in Dallas, Texas on December 10th at 6:30 pm local time; us non-Texans can watch it on chanel.com! [Refinery 29]

Get the look: Coco Chanel

A thin, claret-coloured pout, flawless alabaster skin with just a hint of peach blush, angular jet-black brows and numerous strings of pearls. Every fashion icon has a particular image, in many cases a famous photograph, that becomes the standard but extraordinary library shot by which we remember them. For Audrey Hepburn say, there’s the chignon, tight black dress and cigarette holder. Marilyn, that white dress. For Coco, it’s all pearls, pout, and those inky brows.

Cannes: Anna Mouglalis is Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel is having quite a year. With two biopics out this year, starring two of the most beautiful women playing her; Audrey Tautou and Anna Mouglalis. She would no doubt be rather flattered. Audrey Tautou’s film titled ‘Coco avant Chanel’ follows the life of the queen of fashion, while Anna Mouglalis plays Coco in a film about her affair with Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, called ‘Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky’. So for fashion lovers, this summer will be a dream come true.

Demi Moore to play Coco Chanel

The rumour mill has it that Demi Moore could be cast as Coco Chanel in a biopic about the iconic French fashion designer. The biopic will follow Chanel’s life from age 20 to her death at age 81. As well as portraying her rise to a fashion designer the film will also explore her time as a singer, and her many love affairs one of which was with a Nazi officer during World War Two. I love luxury. And luxury lies not in richness and ornateness but in the absence of vulgarity. Vulgarity is the ugliest word in our language. I stay in the game to fight it. – Coco Chanel

First look: Keira Knightley’s third Chanel Coco Mademoiselle ad campaign (pics + video!)

Keira Knightley is back for the Chanel Coco Mademoiselle ad campaign – and it looks like the third installment is cooler and chicer than ever! The print ads were shot by Mario Testino, and the video – entitled Where is she Now? –  was directed by Atonement’s Joe Wright. “The third film is very silver and quite cool,” Keira said in a press release. “But again, nobody can quite capture her [her character]; so she is kind of there, but she is sort of playing with them … And then she gets on a speed boat! What more can you ask for?” While the overt sexiness found in the first two ads has been toned down, the video campaign certainly isn’t lacking in mystery, seduction and adventure, as Keira goes on a James Bond style disappearing act. Plus, the She’s Not There soundtrack from The Zombies couldn’t be more appropriate for the storyline! The print ads will debut in April, but you can take a look at Keira Knightley’s third Chanel Coco Mademoiselle right here. What are your thoughts? Is this the best one yet? [Huffington Post]

Keira Knightley’s “sexual” Chanel Coco Mademoiselle ad banned

We thought things were a bit quiet at Advertising Standards Authority HQ lately, and knew it would only be a matter of time until something incurred its wrath. Unfortunately for Keira Knightley and Chanel, it was the the ad for the French fashion House’s Coco Mademoiselle perfume. Due to a complaint received by ‘a viewer’ during Ice Age 2 claiming it was “overtly sexual”, the ASA has ruled that it can no longer be shown during children’s viewing hours, or around programmes which might appeal to them. “We considered the ad was suitable for older children, but that the sexually suggestive material was unsuitable for young children,” reads a statement from the ASA. “We therefore concluded that the ad was inappropriately scheduled and an ex-kids restriction should have been applied to prevent the ad from being broadcast in or around children’s programming.” So what makes the ad so sexual, you ask? According to a statement from the watchdog, we think it has something to do with the suggested nudity… “We noted that the photographer was directly involved in unzipping the actress’s garments and that there was a suggestion that she was naked aside from a bed sheet,” the statement reads. “We also noted that there was clear sexual tension between the pair and that they appeared about to kiss on the bed. We considered the ad was suitable for older children, but that the sexually suggestive material was unsuitable for young children.” The ad in its current form will no longer be shown during in or around programmes that children might be watching. Familiarise yourselves with the commercial below and let us know your thoughts! [Huffington Post]

Chanel Coco Cocoon Preview

The other day Chanel hosted a small cocktail event in their showroom to preview their latest Coco Cocoon collection which hits stores in early August. The showroom is gorgeous! Sadly no photography is allowed inside, but I was able to get my hands on some of their professionally shot handbag images. Coco Cocoon is a relatively new addition to the Chanel family – the first line made its debut at the end of 2009 and was supported by an ad campaign featuring Lily Allen. Each handbag in the sportier, more casual collection is made of either leather or lightweight nylon and many of them are reversible. This season, for the first time, there are some orylag fur-accented bags in the mix and one matte-finish alligator skin bag (somewhat of a surprise given that the main RTW Fall 2010 Chanel accessory collection was crafted exclusively using faux-fur). Among the colors in the Fall line are Blue, Charcoal and Light Grey, Ivory, Cobalt Blue, Chocolate, Silver, and of course, Black.

Reviews: Coco Before Chanel

Pre-college I spent 13 years at the Lycee Francais in New York, so it’s little surprise that today a good chunk of my friends live in Paris. Needless to say I’ve been getting second-hand reviews of Anne Fontaine’s biopic “Coco Avant Chanel for weeks now. The film, which premiered in France back in April, just hit theaters in the UK and will be on screens state-side September 25th. I caught one of the advance screenings and left completely taken aback. I was not expecting to be as moved as I was, but the film was a truly powerful portrayal of Chanel’s rise to the top.

From Chanel to Dior – why Paris is still the heart of fashion

When you think of Paris, fashion is always the first word that pops into your head. The City of Culture is known throughout the world for its high number of artists and designer residents, from painters selling their work on the streets in Montmatre, to the designers working for the world’s most prestigious fashion houses. Paris’ vibrant creative scene is the reason so many tourists flock to the city every year, to live out their dreams of renting a little studio in the Latin quarter and spending their days walking along the Seine, or sitting outside coffee shops watching the world’s most stylish residents walk by, now being made available to tourists through Housetrip for short tourism trips. The city has been the centre of the fashion industry since the reign of Louis XIV. The King was very enthusiastic about fashion and encouraged everyone at Versailles to follow suite. He demanded certain types of dress for certain events and started the first Parisian guild of seamstresses, made up of women endorsed by his highness to make clothes. In modern times, famous Parisians like Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior revolutionised the fashion industries of their eras. Coco Chanel influenced the way women dressed all over the world with her effortless and elegant clothes in the early 1920s, while Christian Dior invented the New Look after the war. In the 1960s, Yves Saint Laurent modernised the stuffy world of couture with his daring Le Smoking tuxedos for women. It’s a testimony to all three designers that their names live on as three of the biggest fashion houses in production today. Not only are their labels still around, but they are as desirable as ever. The fashion world still takes its lead from Paris. London, Milan and New York might […]

Is Rita Ora the new face of Chanel?

If we are to believe the speculation, Rita Ora may very well be the brand new face of Chanel… news which is making us very giddy with excitement indeed. This news doesn’t really surprise us considering she was on the front row for the Chanel spring/summer 2014 show during Paris Fashion Week. “Taking a midnight stroll with the man who inspires me to be glamorous at all times without a hint of doubt. Love you uncle Karl,” she wrote on her Instagram while posting some pictures of her antics with Karl Lagerfeld and Cara Delevingne. She also captioned another picture with the following: “HORNS ON HORNS ON HORNS….#CoCoBaby #KL #secret #surprise” The words Karl Lagerfeld, Coco, Secret and Surprise all point to good things so we can’t wait until someone lets the cat out the bag and lets us know what is officially happening. It would be a great addition to her already very impressive fashion CV which also boasts ads for DKNY and Material Girl, among others. We would love to see Rita Ora star alongside BFF Cara Delevingne in a Chanel ad… wouldn’t you? [Metro]

Keira Knightley in Chanel

While many women envy Keira Knightley’s super slim figure and sultry plumped-up pout, there’s something else they can now, regrettably, add to their list – her impeccable fashion sense. Sporting an ultra chic new bob in Paris last week, Ms. Knightley attended the Chanel spring/summer 2011 show in style, and dressed head to toe in the luxury French label at the Grand Palais, the British actress looked every inch the Parisian goddess. The Chanel muse was bang on trend with this gold vintage flapper-inspired dress, paying homage to autumn’s ever-stylish beige tones. A black tweed jacket, meanwhile, gave Kiera a sharp, tailored look, making a cool contrast to her girly sequined frock. And to top the outfit off? A quilted Chanel chain strap bag, of course – we don’t think Coco would’ve had it any other way. From Bend it like Beckham to international superstar, this home-grown beauty has certainly reached new heights in the style stakes.

Chanel cruise collections come to Venice

Last night Karl Lagerfeld presented the Chanel Cruise collections in the Italian city of Venice. It was of course the most beautiful of settings, and is probably the most suited city to the elegance and romance that surrounds the Chanel brand. The catwalk took place on the boardwalk on the Lido beach, a true dream setting and again perfect for cruise. The invitation had an image of Coco sitting on the Lido beach. On the perfect setting Lagerfeld said: “Venice has a genuine dark and mysterious side to it that fascinated me. I really like the Italian spirit and the Venetian lifestyle, and let’s not forget that Coco Chanel came back to Venice for 10 years.

The Pursuit of the Classic Chanel Bag

I’ve been lusting after a classic black, caviar Chanel bag for some time now. Whenever I come across someone carrying one, I feel a twinge of envy and admiration. The luxurious look of the quilted lambskin and the signature linked chain and logo just epitomize the style, class and glamour that Coco, herself, embodied. Even though I can feasibly buy one of these bags, it’s hard for me to rationalize plunking down a few thousand dollars on a handbag, no matter how fabulous and timeless it is. At the same time, I don’t think I will feel fashionably fulfilled until I have my hands on one. {democracy:25}

Top 50 Fashion Designers In The World

Ever wondered who the top 50 fashion designers in the world are? Well, wonder no more. We’ve put together a list most famous fashion designers from around the globe. From past icons to current trailblazers who are setting the trends right now, here’s a comprehensive deep dive into the best fashion designers without whom the fashion industry just wouldn’t be the same. 1. Coco Chanel If there’s one iconic fashion designer who’s influenced the industry more than any other, it’s definitely Coco Chanel. She brought something new to the table, freeing women from the restrictions of frills and corsets, instead offering up simple, comfortable styles. And today, more than 50 years after her passing, her influence is still felt. Coco Chanel’s early life wasn’t an easy one, marked by tragedy and hardship. Her mother passed away when she was young, and she and her siblings had to be raised at an orphanage. Despite everything, Chanel was determined to make a name for herself in the world. Her designs stood out from the crowd, effortless and refined. She transformed fabrics that were traditionally associated with men’s clothing, like tweed and jersey, into chic, comfy pieces for women. The late designer will always be remembered for her creation of the little black dress, which is still a wardrobe staple for many. Chanel also branched out into the fragrance industry, launching her famous Chanel No. 5 perfume in 1921. She was a trendsetter in more ways than one, using groundbreaking marketing techniques to promote her work. And even now, you can spot her signature CC logo anywhere. 2. Giorgio Armani Giorgio Armani is a name that screams luxury and style, and this Italian designer has been a prominent figure in fashion since the 70s. Born in Piacenza, Italy, in 1934, Armani initially studied […]

From Fast Fashion To Slow Fashion: Women’s Sustainable Clothing Choices

Fashion changes so frequently these days that it seems impossible at times to keep up with what’s in and what’s out. What’s hot today might not be tomorrow. Then again, that might become hot once again given the fashion industry’s occasional lean toward that which is seen as retro. Even in recent years, we’ve seen 80s and 90s revivals aplenty, which leads us to wonder what a 2020s revival might look like in 30 years or so. The likes of Coco Chanel revolutionised women’s fashion to begin with, paving the way for the more modern likes of Donatella Versace and Miuccia Prada, amongst a host of other inspirational women. But with the climate crisis reaching boiling point, there has to come a point where we ask questions about just how sustainable the fashion industry is.  Where the more blatant polluters take a lot of the environmental flak, and rightly so in many cases, the fashion industry perhaps goes under the radar in terms of the overwhelmingly damaging impact it has on the environment, particularly when it comes to so-called ‘fast fashion’. We only have to look at some of the shocking statistics – for instance, 10% of global carbon dioxide output can be attributed to the fashion industry, which is more than shipping and flights combined. It’s a sign that things need to change and fast, but how do we go about doing that? First, we must examine the problem. What is fast fashion? Much like fast-food, fast fashion is the result of an increasingly consumerist society, through which speed and convenience are valued above all else. As well as damaging the planet considerably, the trend is responsible for exploiting workers and harming animals.  In terms of a definition, it is essentially that which is cheap and ‘trendy’, often based […]

Why Pearls Are Making A Comeback To The Fashion Scene

There are some fashion trends we miss: neon tennis shoes, flower power sunglasses, and bell bottom jeans There are other fashion trends that wouldn’t fade fast enough: halter tops, animal print hats, and bow collars. And there are trends that are resurfacing here and now, and we’re so glad to have them back. Jumpsuits are back, plaid is back, high heeled boots are back. Crop tops with high waisted jeans, short velvet skirts, and chunky heels are coming back into stores. One of those trends thankfully coming back to life is pearl jewelry – the definition of class and sophistication in accessories, made popular by the glamorous Jackie Kennedy and Coco Chanel. If you picture a woman who commands a room and takes her city by storm, you probably envision someone put together, who dons a striking black and white skirt suit and a string of pearls around her neck. Who wouldn’t want to be that woman? Pearls represent more than just being a classy lady. They have mythic representation as a sign of wisdom through intense and long work, a product of trial and error and difficult process. Their sheen is cloudy, which gives a mysticism to their appearance. The simplicity and shine instead of overt, unavoidable sparkle draws the eye in a new way, different from all other gems. So why now? What in our current society brings the pearl out of time’s shadow and back into the fashion scene? As with any good thing, people may have exhausted the use of pearls or maybe people started to see them as stale or too upper class. But bringing them back has reminded us of a time when things felt simpler and purer, before social media dramas and selfie sticks. A string of pearls can hold so many memories […]

The Crossover Between High-End Fashion And Art

Have you ever wondered about the connection between fashion and art? Believe it or not, these two creative fields have influenced each other for centuries. From using fine art techniques in fashion design to clothing serving as inspiration for famous paintings, the fashion and art worlds are more intertwined than you may think. In this article, we’ll look at the most iconic examples of fashion meeting art. Understanding these crossovers gives an appreciation for how creative expression can take many forms. 1. The Robe à la Française Back in the 18th century, the ornate French Rococo style was all the rage. This movement within the decorative arts focused on elaborate, asymmetrical designs that prioritized decoration over simplicity. Rococo style also utilized pastel colors, gold filigree, and nature-inspired motifs. The robe à la Française reflected many of these Rococo ideals. This garment featured a fitted bodice with a low-cut square neckline that flowed into a full skirt. The overskirt was parted to reveal an underskirt, often intricately embroidered or trimmed in lace or ribbons.
