7 of the best gladiator sandals you need right now

Pedicured feet at the ready, it’s time to get your sandal on! Living in Blighty can mean permanent foot hibernation, which usually results in a neglected shoe wardrobe. So it’s only natural that we can’t wait to slip into pretty sandals come summer. Given that it’s mid-June, and we’re really not in the mood to sport ‘sensible’ shoes with flimsy summer dresses, we’ve decided to search high and low for hot-right-now gladiator sandals every discerning shoe lover needs! The perfect mix between tough and sweet, gladiator sandals are great for the beach or for styling with a summer-inspired look and even your faithful off-duty ensemble will get a stylish hit when you slip into a pair. But we’re not telling you to go all Ancient Greek god on us, and take the literal meaning of ‘gladiator’ sandal with you when shopping (no, Gerard Butler as King Leonidas in 300 was not our inspiration). Opt for sandals splashed in bright colours and adorned with pretty embellishment if you’re looking to make a stylish statement, or do sandals the grown-up way, by opting for muted tones in suede and washed leather. Go on. Step out of those unsightly boots and get summer ready with our roundup of seven of the best gladiator sandals! 1. The soft grey leather and ankle cuff detail is making us swoon -the perfect option for an understated and comfortable look. K Jacques Caravelle sandals, £199, available at My Wardrobe. 2. Who said black sandals had to be boring? The Top 10 Summer Sandals Edit

Slipping into summer sandals marks the beginning of taking pedicured (baby) steps into the sunnier climes – or so we like to hope! And just like we’ve shed the knits, winter coats and layer upon layer of casual t-shirts, it’s high time we did the same in the shoe department. Summer sandals took several guises on the spring/summer 2013 catwalks; from mid-heels to super-embellished, metallics to lovely lace-ups, and we couldn’t be more excited to start the somewhat ritualistic pairing of shoes and summer outfits! It all depends on the look and comfort level you’re going for. Often, summer sandals are associated with gladiator-like, flat styles, but don’t limit yourself to heel-less options. Our top picks aren’t necessarily sandals you want to strut around in, but more of beach-to-bar style. We’ve done the handiwork of rounding up 10 of the best summer sandals, now its your turn to start the outfit imagining! Marc by Marc Jacobs sandal, £300, Shoescribe: This tri-block colour, mid-heel sandal is perfect for pairing with a floaty dress for a late-night summer soiree. Isabel Marant Elvis sandal, £370, Matches: This summer is set to be summer’s biggest hit. Wear with denim cut-off shorts and a louche tee for a relaxed summer look. Matilda woven sandal, £30, Topshop: Nothing says summer quite like a woven piece, and these pretty, feminine sandals hit the spot! Faster studded flat sandal, £25, Asos: These flat sandals have a Christopher Kane-esque feel to them, and we’re not complaining! Comfort and style rolled into one. Primrose leopard animal print multi strap sandal, £25, Stylistpick: If you’re stuck on colours for summer, this sandals mixes up print and pastels to perfection. Pair with a floaty maxi dress for beach-to-bar style. Christian Louboutin Druide sandal, £595, Net-a-Porter: These mid-heel sandals scream WOW! Then again, anything […]

Lunchtime buy: Lanvin flat sandals

Whilst we love the Lanvin for H&M range, we don’t think there’s anything better than owning the original, and if your purse strings can’t stretch to the luxury label’s beautiful dresses, try these flat sandals instead. Neutral footwear is the perfect pared-down finish to any outfit, and these powder-toned sandals are spot on accessories for this season’s colourblock and floral trends. They might be a neutral colour, but their detailing is stand-out, with brass and black studs giving them a gladiator edge. Plus, a toe thong and ankle strap see these sandals are extra secure for ploughing through the sand on the beach. Wear them with a pretty playsuit or a white floaty dress to show them off in style. The Gladiator Mandal

Bernard Wilhelm Spring 2009 When the gladiator sandal sashayed down Chanel’s resort 2007 collection, a new mania was heralded. But with all this hype, fanfare and brouhaha over women and their newly beloved gladiator sandal, where do men factor in? The flurry of sprightly coloured and drab sandals Miu Miu sent out for their SS07 men’s collection paled in comparison to Chanel’s Amazon-like footwear . And as the gladiator sandal trail blazed its way into the closets of women, men were in a chasm of sorts, stuck with the fashionably faux-pas plastic flip-flop and the odd Miu Miu sandal. Fast forward to today and men can now clamour for the so-called gladiator mandal, or man-sandals, at very affordable prices too. Topman and HE by Mango carry some urbane gladiator mandals that effectively blot out the femininity that surround this style of footwear. Here are our top 3 picks.

Gladiator-chic

What stood out on the runway of Chanel’s cruise 2007 collection? The chic knee high Gladiator sandals, which easily took the spotlight away from the rest of the line. In beige, metallic and black, Lagerfeld presented an incredibly sexy sandal which will no doubt spark a trend for Spring/Summer 07. (image: Style.com) Let’s face it, like skinny jeans its unlikely the knee highs will suit all, and Sergio Rossi’s lower length (pictured below) is perfect for those looking for an alternative. The sandal isn’t up on his website yet, but in its place is a higher heeled, mid calf, metallic interpretation, although not as sophisticated. Strutt Couture also on point has a glam but casual gold chained sandal within its wares for spring/summer 07, with my name all over it!

Travel Essentials: What to pack and what not to pack!

mag You’ll probably be off on your jollies within the next few months, and although the prospect of lying on a deck chair in the Mediterranean sun is quite appealing, we know that what comes before – i.e. the dreaded packing and airport madness – is anything but. So we are here to offer a helping hand and virtually assist you with your packing with a list of what to pack and more importantly what to leave behind. Bruised arms and excess baggage airport fines will be a thing of the past! What not to pack: Your finest handbag. We know not toting your favourite designer handbag on holiday might be a tad depressing, but nothing is more depressing than finding out someone has broken in your hotel room and stolen it while you were necking Sambuca shots in the bar downstairs. Or you’ve accidentally got sand in it. Excessive sun also doesn’t do expensive handbags any good either, so leave your fine accessories at home and opt for something cheap and cheerful instead. Your Christian Louboutins. Again, packing the things that you’ve worked months to be able to afford is never a good idea for a holiday where all you want to do is let your hair down and relax. What if the pesky airline loses your luggage? How would you feel about never waking in your fave red-soled beauties again? We can’t bear to even think about it! Hair electrics. Ladies, leave the bulky hair dryers and hair straighteners at home where they belong. The sun will damage and dry out your hair enough without adding heat styling to the mix. Pack a couple of bottles of hair mousse and go for the California beach wave look instead. Your hair will love it, and you can pack a […]

We always see the Tiz getting papped coming in and out of the gym, and we can totally see that her efforts haven’t been in vain as she is rocking a seriously slim and toned body. Just goes to show that hard work really does pay off! *Puts cake down…* Ashley may not be in Hellcats or High School Musical anymore, but we know she’s still hot Hollywood property, and can definitely afford a pricey wardrobe if she wants one. This is why it’s refreshing to know that despite the queues of designers waiting to dress her, she still likes to shop from the good old high street too. Ashley’s gorgeous, print-tastic Tropical Butterfly playsuit only costs £48 – and you can get the exact same one at Motel Rocks. All you’d need are some gladiator sandals, sunnies and a fabulous blow dry and you’d be good to go.

Gorgeous Grecian Goddess – get the look!

[noskim] If watching the Olympic sports wasn’t really your kind of thing then we hope you took inspiration from the heritage of the games. As you’ll probably know the Olympics has its roots in Ancient Greece, a time synonymous with goddesses dressed in flowing garments, tunics and gladiator sandals – sounds a bit like the trends of today, no? So, if you found that you just couldn’t get into Olympic table tennis don’t despair. We’re still holding on to the spirit of Olympic fever by channelling Grecian fashion and you can get it too. Read on to get gorgeously Grecian with tips from plus size clothing retailer Curvissa. Clothes Ok. So, a sheet wrapped around your torso with a few ivy leaves pinned on probably isn’t going to cut it if you want to look ultra sexy (unless, of course it’s fancy dress, and then by all means – old sheets and ripped ivy are the way forward!). Instead, you can quite easily find Grecian style evening dresses on the high street. Opt for floaty white dresses with clinched in waists and wrap over effects to really get that Grecian look. For Grecian straps think one shouldered or cap sleeved. Add some gold bangles or a gold waist belt to really capture that goddess vibe. It doesn’t always have to be about white though. Grecian style dresses have been a big hit this summer and you can find a great selection of Greek goddess style maxi dresses – for alternative colours think black, emerald or turquoise. Make up The Grecian look is all about the dramatic eyes. Apply a light gold eye shadow on your eye lid and use a dark brown matte in the crease of your eye for a contouring effect. Then lightly mix together so that the […]

7 reasons why we won’t be ditching wedges!

This week’s Tuesday Shoesday is an ode to our sore feet. They tolerate a lot, what with all the squeezing and pushing into not so feet friendly shoes. Especially, post fashion month, our feet bear the marks of our slavery to vertiginous heels and that’s why we’re offering them a little cushioned solace in the form of the always comfortable and equally chic wedge. A stylish yet pain free addition to your wardrobe is always a bonus. Enjoy! 1.LK Bennett hebe wedges: If LK Bennett is good enough for the future queen, then it’s good enough for us! 2. Topshop colour block wedges: Combining this season’s hottest style direction, we love the comfort of the wedge, the striking effect of the electric blue and the oversized coff ankle strap. 3. Rupert Sanderson platorm wedges: Nodding to the new season tribal trend with a splash of colour, we fell for the exquisite black patent painted wooden platform sole cracked with metallic gold leaf first! 4. Bali Gladiator wedge sandals: Gladiator sandals and wedges in one; we’re digging the versatility of the Bali wedge. Such an exotic name only puts us in a holiday mood! 5. Jimmy Choo elie wedges : This is when high heels and fashion girls become even better friends. A heel concealed within a wedge in a summer-perfect nude hue: perfection. 6. Soda ankle strap wedges: Tan is a perennial statement colour and what better way to wear it than adorned with mock snake skin. 7. Brian Atwood braided espadrille wedges : The espadrille wedge is a classic summer staple and we love it even more in an on-trend metallic gunmetal colour.

Gwyneth Paltrow looks effortlessly stylish in New York

Whilst attending a party for InStyle magazine at a private residence in the Hamptons, New York, actress Gwyneth Paltrow looked effortlessly stunning in a floor length maxi dress – not to mention enviously slender. Keeping it simple with minimal make-up, staple gladiator sandals, and absolutely no accessories, Gwyneth definitely showed that less is more when it comes simplistic summer attire. After all, we reckon it’s pretty hot stateside right now. We love Gwyneth’s bohemian- inspired get up. But what do you guys think of her look at home? [poll id=”181″]

Kim Kardashian does Louis Vuitton airport chic

Arriving at Los Angeles International Airport earlier this week, reality TV star Kim Kardashian definitely rocked the laid back airport look to perfection. The Kardashian sibling stepped off the plane in a pair of oversized sunnies – naturally – gorgeous gold gladiator sandals, a cream polka dot playsuit, and a Louis Vuitton luggage bag to finish off her jet-setting style. Although we’re massive fans of Kim, we have to admit the outfit has one flaw – but just a little one – the playsuit didn’t do much in the way of flattering her famous curves. Don’t you agree? Maybe next time she should opt for a more tailored version, instead. A good effort all round though. But what do you think of Kim’s airport attire? [poll id=”174″]

New York Fashion Week: Alexander Wang, Victoria Beckham and DVF

Starting off our weekend round up of New York Fashion Week is the ever cool downtown designer Alexander Wang. Loved the world over for his easy-to-wear urban silhouettes and formal loungewear, Wang failed to disappoint once again with his Fall 2011 collection. With sleeveless parkas, luxe fur jackets and others in leather, black and grey separates, metallic footwear, satin pants, leather panel detailing, multi-split tunics, open toe leather boots and tassels galore, his autumn offering is perfect for that achingly cool Nineties inner city girl. Next up was our own home-grown British designer Victoria Beckham who, despite recently announcing her fourth pregnancy, didn’t let the bump get in the way. With impeccable tailored eveningwear in abundance, Ms. Beckham delivered a truly classic collection of trademark pencil dresses that we’ve come to know and love – not to mention a tweed grey, burnt orange and cranberry colour palette with the occasional pop of sunshine yellow seen across cocooning minidresses, laidback loosened silhouettes and draped fabric shawls – the epitome of chic, wearable every day staples. Last but not least was Diane Von Furstenberg with her eagerly anticipated vibrant ‘Goddess’ collection, where the signature colour-injected stripes and floaty separates simply oozed feminine fantasy. With bold graphic prints, sun-infused patterns, metallic accents, gladiator sandals, signature ‘broken cloud’ detailing and neon green and yellow splashes of vibrancy, the collection was undoubtedly the picture perfect backdrop for summer. Stay tuned for more daily NYFW updates…

What to wear this Valentine’s Day

After the January slump, there’s always that sense of relief when February finally arrives. ‘Hurrah, January is over!’ we cheer, as we get back into the swing of work and start counting down the days to the ever-looming Fashion Week. And then we remember that February is the month of Valentine’s Day. Whether we’re loved-up or not, February 14th seems to send the nation into frenzy. We go into panic mode about what exactly we should do to mark the occasion, what gifts we should buy and ,of course , what on earth we should be wearing. The supposed most romantic night of the year, suddenly , and bizarrely – becomes one of the more stressful holidays… For those that choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day (or actively rebel against it for that matter), we have come up with a few outfit suggestions to make preparations for the nation’s ‘date night’ that little bit easier. We’ve selected some of our favourite items as inspiration for your own Valentine’s outfit. Having picked out clothes suitable for a daytime date, a romantic evening or a night out with the girls, we think we’ve got all areas covered… The Lunch Date Outfit One: It is probably most difficult to think of the perfect outfit for the daytime date. Will you be going out for a posh lunch? Meeting for a couple of drinks? Taking part in a fun and spontaneous outdoor activity? Either way, it’s still cold out there, so we think smart layering is the way forward. Skinny jeans are always a winner in our book, so why not update the look for spring with these platform clogs from KG by Kurt Geiger. Team with an oversized cardigan, like this kimono from Bess and a neutral scarf from Therapy for a casual, yet […]

Christopher Kane breathes new life into Versus

Its’ been 20 years since Gianni Versace first launched the diffusion line Versus and 5 years since it’s last instalment. But in Milan on Sunday the label was relaunched with the help of fashion’s darling, Christopher Kane. For AW09, Donatella Versace recruited the Scottish designer to produce a capsule collection of accessories for Versus and true to form Kane delivered. The collection which Kane describes as “tough and glamour, effervescent and rock ‘n’ roll, includes leather structured totes, handbags, evening clutches, platform ankle boots, gladiator sandals and cut out high heeled sandals. Most items are embellished with crystals for heightened glamour and retain an edge of toughness with lots of metal hardware. Chunky steel jewelry and chain necklaces also make up the collection which was inspired by three main visible themes ,the diamond, the geometric pattern of the labyrinth (most evident on the handbags) and the Moschettone. On her choice of partner, Donatella Versace said: “Christopher is a highly creative young designer and his work impressed me from the very beginning. His Rock’n Roll style is very powerful, glamorous and sensual, perfectly in tune with the mood of Versus, which was always intended for young people who want clothes that project a personal style that is constantly evolving” Spring 2010 will see the launch of both men’s wear and women’s wear.
