Originating from a career in advertising, Kal Kaur Rai began designing clothes as a hobby. However after supplying a boutique on a sale or return basis and completely selling out, Kal knew it was time to take her hobby seriously. Launched in 1997, the label now boasts a clientele of Beyonce, Mariah Carey and Victoria Beckham and is stocked in over 70 independent stores including Topshop. 2004 saw Kal Kaur Rai adding to her CV the honorary title of Winner of the young achiever of the year at the Asian business awards.
Whom would you credit as being an inspiration?
Women who understand the power of dress and style are an inspiration to me.
What do you have in store for us design wise for Spring/Summer 2005?
For S/S I am doing an eclectic mix of long boho skirts and ethnic inspired tops. Lots of embellishment and colour.
What one piece of advice would you give to a budding fashion designer?
Your finger must be on the pulse at all times. The fashion industry is like a roller coaster ride, you have to be ready to take the rough with the smooth. Each season is like starting a new business. If you have talent, determination and belief you can succeed.

Those who are still mourning Tom Ford’s departure from the world of fashion last year need not worry anymore. The master is back, re-uniting with his business partner Domenico De Sole, both will be collaborating with Estee Lauder to produce a range of beauty products, following up with and independent line of fragrances and a ready to wear collection. It all sounds very exciting!

After being spotted having lunch with Donatella and Mario Testino, rumours have been flying around that Demi Moore is set to be the new face of Versace. If correct then Moore, 42 will be taking over from the current face of the label, Madonna. According to femalefirst.co.uk a spokesperson for Versace says “We’re not releasing any information about that yet.” There has also been no confirmation as to whether she is preganant for Ashton Kutcher.
The speed at which one can become a celebrity is amazing, and if anyone should know it would be Coleen McLoughlin. She has made the headlines almost every week for one thing or another and the most talked about stunt at the moment is her success at making the June cover of Vogue. All are debating whether she deserves it or not, how it will affect the magazines credibilty by having a “chav” on the cover, and most importantly will it sell? Well yes it will sell, simply because of everyone’s curiosity. I think it’s a clever move for Vogue in terms of sales but perhaps not for the future. She’s definitely no style/fashion icon, not a model or an actress. She doesnt sing, actually she doesnt work at all. Having Coleen on the cover will lessen the exclusivity of being a Vogue Cover girl but Vogue is no small time magazine, their every move is calculated and there is no doubt that they performed extensive research and concluded it’s what the people want. All I can say is that Victoria Beckham really should switch to Coleen’s pr agency cause they are doing an excellent job and although I do purchase Vogue every month anyway, I must say I am looking forward to June’s edition. I can’t wait to see how they will potray her. Miss McLoughlin should not be underestimated!
