Fashion Rocked

by Michele Obi on September 12, 2005

Celebrations for New York Fashion week kicked off with Cond Nast’s Fashion Rocks at Radio City Music Hall. Recognising the relationship between fashion and music, and bringing together some of the biggest stars of both sectors, Fashion Rocks really rocked. None of the stars held back with their outfits.

Beyonce and Gwen Stefani didnt miss the promotional opportunity and used the event to model their lines. Destiny’s child attended the concert wearing designs from Beyonce’s and her mothers label “House of Dereon”, while Gwen wore a dress from her label L.A.M.B. Alicia Keys looked stunning in a beautiful tangerine dress by Max Azria.

Billy Idol, Duran Duran, David Bowie and Nelly were just a few of the names who performed on the night. Tim McGraw opened the evening with a performance of “My Old Friend” as a tribute to the victims in New Orleans, Louisana.

Although the concert was a success, the after party didnt get much praise and was slammed as being tasteless.

Starting a rock-inspired fashion line myself, I was not impressed with the televised version of this show. It was non-informative of the history of Rock Fashion as it was claiming to be. The fashion the artists wore seemed to be a 90’s revival theme. Tempted I was to buy tickets for the actual performance, luckily I did not. Had I, possibly I would have been able to see the models, collections, and anything but overly commercial stars, some of who are has beens (excluding Billy Idol, Gwen, Pharell, etc). But come on… Lisa Marie Presley in that GAWD-awful black wedding dress? No short-bodied person should be caught dead in it. And i won’t get started on the cheap babydoll dress outfits in which Destiny’s Child performed. I was pissy the entire time, with regards to the lack of styling on the artists, cursing their stylists the entire time. I give the televised version a “D” rating. Just my opinion.
