Who is Rachel Zoe?

by Michele Obi on January 16, 2006

Been spending your days wondering why, Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan have gradually started to look like each other? Well wonder no more, their “look” is the work of celebrity stylist of the moment Rachel Zoe.

With a long list of celebrity clients including Kate Hudson, Mischa Barton, Enrique Iglesias and Salma Hayek, Zoe commands up to approx. $6000 a day for her work and is notably more fashion obsessed than most.

Her look is very glam boho, (think 1970’s, Kate Moss and Tom Ford), and in response to her critics who claim she’s simply creating clones of herself, Zoe says,

“I’m not trying to make people look like me. But when you spend a lot of time with someone, you rub off on each other. I think I’m kind of an older sister to Lindsay and Nicole.”

Majoring Rachel Zoe shopping with Nicole Richie in sociology and psychology, her background doesn’t consist of any formal fashion training. Previous fashion experience came from dressing herself and friends. After college a move to New York resulted in working for YM magazine as a stylist and after four years Zoe turned freelance.

Describing her job as pressurised and often experiencing sleepless nights, the demand for her work and others in her field, confirms the growing need for stylists within the celebrity circuit.

Like many careers it takes a lot of determination, networking (as who know and who knows you could result in a big break) and most of all originality.

Artist all have their own personal style and for having that, it should be respected. Salvador Dali, VanGogh, Monet, John Pitri all have a style, does that make them any less valuable? No, it dosent because its a personalized style. So I say Rock on Zoe with your $6000 style.

In contemplating what I want to do with my life next (i.e. after highschool) the thought of being a personal/celebrity stylist has crossed my mind several times. I would love to be a personal stylist and already give style advice to my whole family and several of my friends. Without even initiating it myself I notice how people turn to me for style advice asking spontaneously if “this looks good with that” or “can I wear this color with that”.

Maybe this is my thing…I have so many ideas of what I want to do but I haven’t been able to narrow it down to one thing. I am a huge fan of Zoe and love the way Nicole, Mischa, Lindsay etc. dress (due to Zoe’s styling). Zoe is definitely an inspiration to me.

She is a known meth addict responsible for getting all of todays starlets hooked on meth and anorexic. I’m not sure she’s someone to look up to : (

Adrienne’s right only I heard it was coke, not meth. Same diff, we all know she at the very least encourages her clients to be unhealthy, which is why Richie dumped her. She’s also 44, not 34. What’s she doing trying to be friends with 20-somethings? I think she just wants attention. Zoe once said “I’ve worked with people who are size 8 or 10.” In her world, these are fat people. She’s perpetuating the poor body images girls and women have in this country. Shame on you, Zoe! And your Zoe-bots! Can’t wait until they all dump you. For all aspiring fashionistas, do not worship false idols. Stick to Versace and Coco Channel.

I agree, and we’re not promoting that anyone should look up to her, but its a similar case to that of Kate Moss as in should the quality of someone’s work be disregarded because of their personal life? I’ve heard the rumours too, which if true are quite disturbing! It looks like her career is on a major downward spiral, unless she pulls a Kate Moss on us!

Does anyone have stylist contact information? Or any ideas on where to start?

Thanks.

Stylists often have to fit their celebrity clients into designer’s runway sample sizes of 0-2. Seen Project Runway?…those dress forms they use are size 0. Designers lend out their dresses, and celebs want to be able to fit into them, so they starve themselves to get the freakish physiques of models.
