Japan is an exciting market for H&M with fashion conscious consumers with great spending power. With a population of 128 million of which almost 13 million in Tokyo, we see great opportunities for expansion in this part of the world - Rolf Eriksen, CEO of H&M

H&M have announced plans to open their first store in Japan, to be located in Tokyo’s shopping district, Harajuku. Currently under construction, the building is expected to have a 1,500 square metre sales floor and is due for completion in autumn 2008. The first, but certainly not the last, the Swedish retailers have confirmed they are negotiating for further outlets in Tokyo.

The Harajuku store finally opened on Saturday. I wandered past today and the lines are still incredible with security guards making perfectly neat lines that go way back to the Meiji St intersection! The Harajuku district seems to be crawling with shoopers carrying H&M bags.
