I’m not a plastic bag!
Features | Michele Obi | March 20, 2007
The hype behind this simple yet creative eco-friendly creation from Anya Hindmarch is incredible and be warned demand is high! The “I’m not a plastic bag” goes on sale today and if you’re looking to get your paws on this re-useable shopping bag which retails at £5 each then get down to your nearest Anya Hindmarch store quick time, or visit wearewhatwedo.
Now personally I love this bag and I adore Hindmarch even more for designing it, but I do wonder if like every other “must have” everyone is dying to get one because of hype rather than the genius of the design. Its been promoted endlessly with reports of Lily Cole, Erin O’Conner and Keira Knightley seen bag in hand and the sceptical side of me wonders if they forked out their fiver, or if they received the bag as a gift. Either way as a result of the celebrity endorsement the bags were going for £200 on ebay. Madness! While it is a cute alternative to the plastic bag, there are and have been loads of stylish eco-friendly bags on the market for a while now so what makes this one better than the rest?

On 15 April Bags of Change will launch a really funky eco-friendly hemp-cotton tote bag which not only looks good but will reward you for shopping ethically and locally. Sign up now for a sneak preview at http://www.bagsofchange.com
check out ebay, they are ripping pepole off with thier prices, £45 upwards, even seen one for £400!!! like what is going on here! i would love one, but i am no prepared to spend that kind of money when i know what they retail at! them people are not very eco friendly at those prices, are they?! i think not!
I think the reasons that these are so pricey are purely all of the celebertities who have been seen carrying one.. If only all celebrities would be keen to wear eco-freindly clothes?! I know for a fact one of my friends is eager to get one.. not becasue shes interested in “helping the environment” its purely because she is fashion consious as hell.
the bags have not been going for £200 pounds on ebay, that is a lie, they have been going for £110 approx, i checked!
£5 is enough to pay, £110, bit much no matter how nice it may be or which celbs hav 1! like thats madness, you wouldn’t get some1 paying £110 for something normally priced a a fiver anywhere else, would you?! money to burn these people!!!!
I’m going to laugh at the stupid people that forked out for this bag when Sainsbury’s start selling this bag at the end of this month!
will every sainsbury’s be selling the “i’m not a plastic bag”… i really want one!
Hey i work for Sainsburys our store is only getting 30 thats it so get down there people
I WANT ONE!!!!
ive been down to sainsburys this morning and by the time i got there they had handed 30 raffle tickets out (so, first come first served)and theyd all gone already. does anyone no where i can get one?
These bags were sold out of Sainsburys before 07.30 when it was advertised that they would be selling them from 8am!!! Apparently, each Sainsburys store was only allocated 30 bags to sell. If this bag was designed to encourage people to save the environment, then it should have been mass produced and been available nationwide. The fact that they only produced a limited amonut gives it exclusivity and celebrity status which defeats the object of producing it, as it is just a fashion item!!! It’s Stella McCartney does H&M all over again!!!
I work for sainsburys we had 90 come in and they haD all gone by 90 i was so gutted. does anyone know where i can get one from.
EBAY I FEAR LOL
hey jade i work for sainsburys we had got 90 bags but i think other store just got 30. good point. they started selling them at 7am when the store opened. unfortunately i didnt get one.
To be honest is a bag really that important how is this supposedly designer save the world bag gonna save anything when all these supermarkets are sourcing there products from thousands of miles away. Clearly it s not gonna do anything its a PR stunt i say dont worry about the bag people will be old hat in couple of weeks cheer up. Emmet
Hiya all, well i was one of the saddos who was outside sainsburys before opening and i got one of only 30, in store!!!! nice bag but not worth what they are going for on ebay!!!
I got one! Was there at 7am and out by 8am with bag in hand. They were turning people away by 7.20am as they were overrun!
After queuing at my Bolton store b4 7am i was unlucky as only 30 tickets were handed out(i was number 35) i then found out that the next nearest store in Darwen opened at 8am i rushed over there and arrived in time to be allocated ticket number 28 !! i just feel sorry for all the young girls that turned up after me only to be leaving empty handed , why have’nt they made enough of these bags for everyone???
I managed to get one this morning for a £5 our nearest Sainsburys it was very good and didnt start selling them until 8am. Although they did have 90 - The guys @ work think I am mad for not selling it on ebay BUT I wanted one when the Anya Hindmarch site sold out in March. They just dont understand :o)
the bag is fab i luv it 2 bits lol i got up at 3.30 n went to sainsburys at 4.45 i was at the front yay and it fits nearly everything in it !!!!
The Anya Hindmarch website will be taking orders for the U.S. version from the 7th May. This one will be in Navy (nicer colour) but again will probably be on a first come basis.
I think it’s a great concept and although I wasn’t one of the few that got one, it has made me more aware of environmental issues and I’m one of the most fashion conscious people that exist! Now, when I’m shopping I’ll try to put things in one bag instead of taking a bag from every shop I visit. Good luck on 7th May!!!
Well done if you got one - I queued and got one from Anya’s shop in March and yes it is lovely.
My husband also bought one for me online so I have a spare so if anyone does want it (without resorting to silly ebay prices make me a sensible offer and I will gladly send it to you.
hey rabbit how much my girlfriend wanted one
As I say make me an offer =:x)
I COULD ONLY AFFORD SAY 20 POUNDS
I didn’t get one..had to go to work, I asked a friend to try to get me one from his local sainsbury’s but the tickets had already been given out when he got there.
I don’t want to be annoying competing, but I could give you £30 for it, can’t afford any more.
i called into Sainsburys at 7:10AM they had all gone!! i realy realy want one everyone at work laughs at me, where can i get one at reasonable price does anyone have one they dont want? ebay is just silly money.x
I was also lucky enough to get one this morning but they were turning people away by about 7.20 as there were 30 people there. I got there at 6.50 and was number 25. Its a lovely bag, but not worth ebay prices!
I am in Canada, does anyone know where I could find this bag or if anyone wants to sell one to at a reasonable price, I will take it.

I think your all mad, sorry but I went to see if I could get one at 9ish and sold out but that mad part is u people actually wait at 3am for a bag for a coupe of quid! I think people are stupid and if they want a bag that much that celebs have theres plenty in the mags every week for people to have but because ppl wanna buy a canvas bag that looks like a normal sainsburys enviornment bag you all go crazy. I didnt get one so I just said oh well sad people who wait from 3am til 7am for it!!
People are pathetic! I didnt get one and i dont care it was fait and if they are sold for 200 quid more fool the person who pays that
I’m purely fascinated by this human attitude.
I suck at fashion and can’t understand how something like that can generate that much money transaction.
I mean, hurray, people are making money out of it but
It’s absolutely destroying the spirit of an “ecological way of life”. It makes it look as a fashion superstar farce.
I’m not saying people buying this are consequently not ecologically aware, but you got to admit…madness
I use eco-bags all the time, and don’t give a damn if I look hot with it, that’s not its purpose.
If you want to look good, train or act for your community or simply for your planet… I guess you’ll be more beautiful to the eyes of people around you then, rather than if you “wear” an eco-sexy-bag.
IMHO and no offense to anyone, just incredibly amazed and had to say so:)
Jerry
how much do u want amber? not daft money tho??
Hi Anya Bag Loversx
I was one of the lucky ones to get a bag yesterday morning, got to my local Sainsburys at 7.30am to a queue of over 50 people I was on my way out and a lady told me to get a ticket - apparently not all Sainsburys nationwide were selling 30 bags per store this particular store was selling 239 and another was selling 400.
This store sold their bags at 8.00am
I hope everyone enjoys their bags and maybe look forward to adding to their collection - I am not a plastic bag in other colours (blue and Green) will be out in May/June from USA and Japan.
i went to sainsbury’s yesterday to get one. was too late they only had 24, then when i looked a the people queing up to get them i was so put off and did not want the bag anymore, everyone is going to be carrying one around soon , i realised its a fad that will be over very soon.
Hello
I got a bag yesterday morning - got to my local sainsburys just after 6.. but they were turning people away by around 7.30, store didnt open till 8 though! the nice man looking after us bought us a coffee and everything! There were alot of girls giving the staff ‘attidtude’ once they told them there were 30 people in the cue! Come on ladies.. its not their fault. Also a huge surprise to see many men there queing for their partners / daughters!!!
P.s… i would be willing to sell but it would have to be a GOOD offer as i do LOVE the bag… it really does fit everything in it! (not expecting an offer though… they are pricey on Ebay!)
Name what your willing to pay send me an email me boxerpup_rani@hotmail.co.uk Iv already been offered 60
I missed out! I knew they would all go in the 1 day, but people queing from 6, noway! I didn’t expect that! Oh well… the whole fad will blow over soon, that many people will have them, so will get 1 at some stage or other! Will just stick to my ‘little brown bag’ from bloomingdales for another while, lol!
I “cringed” at my latest venture joining a bunch of gullible ladies at my local sainsbury’s it was odd why do you want one they are horrid certainly not sexy or “look at me”.
They bags basically emit “I am desperate maybe bunny boiler”.
I will treat her indoors to a much nicer bag something Chloe, something nice, yes I didn’t get one THANK GOD!
I have 3 of these bags, one im keeping and shall be putting 2 of them on ebay
*tut* ebay scrounger….missed the point there love.
It doesn’t really matter where it’s made, or what it’s made out of… The point is, people who like this bag will want to use it and that in itself can reduce the consumption of plastic bags.
The goal wasn’t to diminish child labor or cheap labor in China.
If people like this bag and decide to use it as an alternative to plastic shopping bags, then the message and goal is effective.
People who want this bag know its intended purpose and ultimately it’s a personal choice to stop using plastic or not. The bag itself doesn’t make a difference, it’s the attitude people adopt.
The message is boldly imprinted on the bag so it’s promoting awareness and a 2nd look at things.
Like if you bring it to a supermarket where everyone is packing their stuff in plastic, they might think twice next time.
