Celeb Designers: No thanks!
Features | Lindsay North | March 31, 2008Well, it seems as though every young celeb and their mother has decided to design their own line. We have Rachel Bilson, Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan and others joining the roster of actress-cum-seamstress already peopled by Hilary Duff, the Olsen twins, Mandy Moore, Sarah Jessica Parker, as well as the other celeb set of the Hilton sisters, the Madden brothers, Lauren Conrad and … well, you get the point.
At this point I wouldn’t be surprised to wake up tomorrow and find out that George Clooney was actually launching a menswear line in conjunction with Brooks Brothers. In any event, below is a list of celebs I sincerely hope, no, I plead with, not to design anything!

Marilyn Manson - it would be black, it would probably have holes in it around indecent areas, and would be entirely morbid and definitely not glam.

Cher - her Vegas showgirl costume may have been couture, but her head still looked like a feather duster. She has appeared on Mr. Blackwell’s worst-dressed list so many times that it’s almost comical.

Mr Blackwell - I always find it strange that a man who himself has committed so many fashion faux-pas actually has the chutzpah to criticize what other people wear.

Anna Piaggi - I saw her at NY Fashion Week, wearing a hat inspired by a box of chocolates, and I’m still confused at who draws the lines between innovative/quirky/seriously misguided/weird fashionistas. Also– what does she do with all of those hats when she’s finished with them?

I agree. There are way too many celebs out there that think they should produce clothing lines. Why can’t people just stick to one thing anymore? why do they have to be involved in every market? Bottom line Celebs don’t need clothing lines. Actors and signers should just stick to the careers they are good at instead of trying to be part of every market.
I also agree with the previous post. Just because someone is famous should not mean they get yet another leg up on being given an opportunity to make even more money. There are some celebs out there who I believe truly do have a passion for design. But those out there such as Hillary Duff or Ashley Simpson, are just in the market to become even more famous- leave fashion to the pros celebs!
There are parts I agree with, as well as things that I disagree with throughout the article. I don’t necessarily think its a bad thing that celebs want to produce clothing lines. However, I definately agree that there are celebs out there that shouldn’t have clothing lines. Saying that actors and signers shouldn’t have clothing lines, I feel is kind of pushing it. That is kind of like saying that singers can’t be actors, even though there are so many out there that do both and are amazing at each of them in different ways.
I agree. Too many celebrities are getting involved with clothing lines. I’m not saying they shouldn’t be allowed to, but are they doing it because its something they have a passion for, or is it something to put their name on?
