Forget the ubiquitous ‘paint splattered’ prints that are apparently the only thing that will do this summer. There is no fun in wearing somebody else’s painting on a skirt that every second girl is twirling in. Stick to the most unique canvas you have instead – why, your face of course.

Slicks of colour smeared on flawless complexions mean creative experiments that you can wipe off at the end of the day.

All talk recently has been lip related but, really, when the sun comes out, who can beat a vivid eye colour for fresh summer beauty?

Think graphic hues and brilliant brights (MAC has the best selection) rather than subtle shimmer. Look to aqua eyeliner at Marni or coral smudges at Dries Van Noten for painterly inspiration.

Try jewel tones – orange may seem like a risky colour to wear near the eye but is a surprisingly fresh way to wear colour, and makes blue eyes pop better than any other shade. Make like a Klimt painting, all smudgy and gilded; a little illustrated work of art.
