Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism: Fashion and Function?

Remember when mobile phones literally looked like bricks? Its safe to say that’s no longer the case. Now mobiles are not only incredibly thin, but after enlisting the help of designers they’ve become stylish too. This year Nokia teamed up with Fredrique Dubal to create the Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism.

About a month ago or so I received the Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism to try out and write about…so here are my thoughts.

The phone looks great but mine collapsed after two weeks and now it doesn’t even switch on.

As soon as I saw the phone I loved it. Dubal’s contruibution (he designed the print) is funky, vibrant and stylish. I adored the sparkling sapphire crystal central navi-key and I’m a fan of Nokia so the fact that it was easy to use was a bonus.

I loved that I could change the colour of the keymat and the accessories - a little pouch with a chain handle and a print bandana, were cute too. I hated that my current phone couldn’t hold much in the way of music, so the Prism, which has a built-in MP3 player and 1GB built-in-memory was a godsend.

But as I began to fall deeply in love with the phone, it started to play up. After a week of using the Prism I could only take calls using the loudspeaker function or the headset and after another week it just wouldn’t charge. So now it no longer switches on.

While I accept this could be a fault with the phone that I received, as a result I really wasn’t impressed. The Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism is super stylish, but in my opinion its not functionable.

Cell phones are indeed much fashinoable these days. Looking back at the old phones from 10 years old go is embarrassing sometimes!

BTW, I love this blog and I would really like it if we could do a link exchange. Please stop by my blog when you have the time!

I noticed a lot more fashion fones lately. Around the time the iPhone came out, there was one by Prada with a similar design. I think it was just last week that Dior released their own mobile phone.

same problem here - the battery was quite crappy from the beginning, now it also died, after approx. 4 weeks.

[...] When fashion last teamed up with technology, My Fashion Life was left wowed at aesthetics, but rather disappointed over the functionality of the <a href=”http://www.myfashionlife.com/archives/2008/06/07/nokia-7900-crystal-prism-fashion-and-function/”>Nokia 7900 Crystal Prism</a>. Now nothing can be taken away from the visual masterpiece Fredrique Dubal brought to us in the Prism. However, such is the mind of the average consumer that when fashion is infused into technology and malfunction occurs, fashion tends to be seen as fall guy. For instance, Nokia’s move to beautify the Prism may be viewed as the oversight in delivering a functional phone. [...]
