Want to find out how to whiten your nails or get a zipper unstuck? Then I have the book for you. ‘Top Tips For Girls’ is the first book authored by former Fashion Editor of Tatler, Kate Reardon. It’s household tips mixed with things your mother never told you – all wrapped up in one handy little package.

Kate has collected hundreds of tips from women on all aspects of life, from gardening and cooking, to weddings and shoes. It’s an interesting concept, supported by a website of the same name www.toptipsforgirls.com which has sponsors like Net-A-Porter and regular ‘ top tip’ contributors. The website is highly rated by Vogue: ‘One of our favourites’, and Tatler: ‘You won’t get through the day without it’, but will the book have the same impact?

It’s small and lightweight enough to fit into your handbag and has just over 200 pages of tips and suggestions. Here are a few of the best:

How To Polish Handbags

Clear aerosol or paste furniture polish is the best polish for leather handbags.

How To Meet Men

Avoid being the unapproachable princess in the tower. Smile and be able to stand alone for a while. No one is ever going to approach anyone in a big gaggle of girls.

How To Grow Old Gracefully

Grow old disgracefully; it’s more fun.

I would most definitely page through it in a bookshop, but personally it’s not something I would go out and buy. I don’t think it’s that relevant for the modern woman. I quite like the website (perhaps she should have stuck with that?), but even then do I really want a tip on ‘How to stop being lonely’?

Maybe some women do need to know ‘How to escape a plane in the event of a crash’, but right now it’s just not for me. Now, how about Top Tips for Boys? That certainly would be a best seller…
