In perfect contrast to US Vogue’s May edition which was so heavily airbrushed it may as well have been a painting, French Elle has decided to shoot a non-photoshopped front cover.

The cover star is actress and model Monica Bellucci who can be seen posing in a Christian Dior jumper. But not only has she not been photoshopped, but she isn’t wearing any make up too. Nope, not even a little bit, she really is that beautiful.

Editor in chief Isabelle Maury asked Peter Lindergh to photograph Monica and seven other famous women and somehow he managed to convince them all to pose without their mascara. Inside you’ll find Eva Herzigova, Charlotte Rampling and Sophie Marceau all au natural.

In a bizarre ritual, they had their hair and make-up done and then removed the
make-up before the shoot, this was according to Lindbergh the key to their glowing .

‘Stars without make up’ contains 11 black and white photos over 16 pages. This is a positive step forward. And look how beautiful Monica Bellucci looks. It just goes to show that excessive airbrushing is so unnecessary.

What’s your take on the airbrush phenomenon; do you prefer your favourite cover stars with or without it?

That’s so refreshing to see. She looks stunning!
I remember this ad I saw once… the girl was beautiful but she had so many “flaws”… gap teeth, a mole, thicker eyebrows, creases in her lips, etc. && I just couldn’t stop staring at the unique beauty. Instead of boring, it was so interesting like this cover shot!

This is so fab!! Though it may seem small to some — ie my bf with whom I often fights about the effects of airbrushing on women of all ages– this has a huge effect. Just the fact that one magazine as prominent as Elle puts a non-airbrushed/no makeup woman on the cover is great. There’s a book called “The Power of Small” coming out next week and it looks to be very inspiring. It’s about how small things can have big impacts in both business and life..we all need some inspiration these days this is so refreshing!

Are you shitting me? That’s what she looks like when she rolls out of bed in the morning? She’s absolutely gorgeous.
    Sans maquillage, mais vraiment belle!

  4. Wow. She really needs make-up. Looks plain. I can get plain at the local mall. What makes us look at the models is due to artist who prepare their faces and clothing. The creativity in which they display an alternate look aside from the everyday. Something that is un-natural. If I didn’t know Elle and saw that for the first time I wouldn’t even look in it. Why, cause the woman behind me at the grocery checkout looks just like her…plain.
