Moving on from the sombre and dramatic runway looks of last year, designers are opting for a more innovative, daring and colourful palette this season. It should come as no surprise therefore, given the “dare to wear nature of the season, that the 1980’s is yet again ripe for revival. Designers such as Danielle Scutt went for a trashy and flashy 80s look, and Topshop Unique’s collection looks like it has jumped straight from the set of a Bananarama video with its shoulder pads, boxy tailoring, denim jumpsuits, and candy-coloured motifs.

Few trends from the ’80s have as much iconic punch as acid wash. While countless celebs often turn to cut off denim shorts in the summer months, this season sees denim in all its guises , faded, ripped, stone-washed, acid-washed, splashed with bleach. From faded denim to jackets, dresses to skirts and shirts, acid, bleached or stonewashed denim is the casual look of the moment. From Sass & Bide to Balmain, ripped skinny styles and acid wash rocked the fashion runways for spring. Karen Walker, Junya Watanabe and Marc by Marc by Jacobs all worked denim into their collections too. So this summer, enjoy washed denim as a treasure , not trash.
