Life is hard, we all know that. Sometimes it seems like a constant string of mishaps and disappointments. Of course, we all know that this is not true, too. Life has its ups and downs and it is important to love the good moments and learn from the bad ones. It also helps to let it be all about you sometimes. We collected four big moments everyone should have in their life to make it worth living.
No, it is not petty to feel good when admired. Actually the Brain and Creativity Institute at University of Southern California found out that seeking admiration is a deeply rooted emotion, located right next to basic emotions like fear or
happiness. So, enjoy the compliment about the dress you are wearing, feel good about the amazed glances when people enter your apartment. It’s okay to feel pretty, cool or a little bit invincible sometimes. If it is about something you achieved (see below), it’s okay to go nuts. You deserved it. Speaking of admiration – scientists found out that people thinking about themselves and getting respect and recognition for their action are the happiest people there are. So, don’t feel bad next time you are standing in front of your closet thinking about which outfit to choose.
As we already said above, one of the best ways to achieve positive feedback and respect is to create something for yourself. Be creative. If you have the skills, create your own fashion items or art. You can even sell those for a good prize on the Internet. But creation is not about money. It is about doing something on your own, bringing something to life that hasn’t been there before. It is no coincidence that the great Greek philosophers thought that having an idea is the closest we ever will get to be god. Of course, you do not need to create a whole world – just paint your grocery bags, take photos, or think of something else. Be creative is more fulfilling than anything else.
We will now say something that you may object to, but psychologists back us up: it’s okay to gamble from time to time (all in good measure, of course). People need the thrill of a good game and the endorphin high of a good win. Of course, you cannot know when or how much you will win. But that’s just it. It’s about luck, about challenging fate and winning from time to time.So go ahead – play cards or a lottery ticket, and win something. It will be something you remember.
An even more surefire way to be happy is to be altruistic. You won something? Then give back. There are literally thousands of trustworthy charities, like Amnesty International who really need your help in making the world a better place. Better yet, look for people who need help in your immediate surroundings. Simply donating money may be nice (and it really helps!), but being actively involved will be something you will remember your whole life. You don’t need to go to Africa to do this. Look for animal shelters, school or sports projects or any other charity in your hone city. There are plenty of people who need your help. And again – it is totally okay to feel good about being the good Samaritan from time to time.
