If you think of Monte Carlo and Monaco, you probably think immediately of the legendary Grand Prix around the tiny principality’s streets along with the most famous casino in the world, a harbour full of yachts and some of the world’s glitziest and most glamorous people. And you wouldn’t be far out. But Monte Carlo is also increasingly famous for the fashion that goes along with its famous car race.
The Monte Carlo casino was originally conceived to save the financially challenged Grimaldi family (the ruling dynasty) from bankruptcy in the mid-19th century. It was designed to pull in Europe’s wealthy patrons to Monaco. Today, it’s probably the most famous casino in the world. It’s certainly the most glamorous and, unlike many other brasher casino resorts around the world, it’s most certainly associated with fashion, style and the high-living elite.
The most glamorous Grand Prix
A lot of the glamour associated with Monte Carlo and Monaco, though, comes from its Grand Prix. The Monaco Grand Prix has been run around the streets of the Principality since 1929, and is generally thought to be the most prestigious race in the world. It’s most definitely the highlight of the Formula One Grand Prix season. The race is run on the city’s streets with numerous changes in elevation, along with a tunnel and very tight corners. This makes it one of the toughest F1 courses and the shortest.
During the 1960s, England’s Graham Hill became known as Mr. Monaco courtesy of five Monaco GP wins between 1963 and 1969, whilst Brazilian Ayrton Senna won six times here between 1987 and 1993, five of them consecutively.
Amber Lounge fashion
In 2003, the after-race Amber Lounge Monaco Grand Prix parties started. This quickly became the event to see and be seen at for the rich and famous including royalty, celebrities, and world famous athletes. Then three years later, it was decided to use the event to raise money for people in need. With the patronage of Prince Albert II of Monaco, fashion shows became part and parcel of the Amber Lounge. This sees Formula One drivers hitting the catwalk alongside beautiful supermodels and F1 “grid girls” each year to promote fashion collections from some of the world’s best-known houses including Jimmy Choo, La Perla and Hervé Léger.
This proved so successful that another Amber Lounge fashion event was quickly included after the Singapore Grand Prix, with fashion shows and a huge after-event party. So far, the Amber Lounge fashion events have raised over €3.7 million for good causes including the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, the Special Olympics and Elton John’s AIDS Foundation. Celebs including Naomi Campbell, Kim Kardashian, Rod Stewart, Elle MacPherson, Bono, Johnny Depp, and many others, have been spotted in the Amber Lounge for the F1 weekend.
If you want to be part of the Monte Carlo fashion and Formula One scene, you can. It’s easy enough to get tickets for the Grand Prix weekend and to get into the famous “Casino de Monte-Carlo”. Just practice a few games of your chosen game like Baccarat or roulette before you go. It’s easy to do this online at the MyCasinoRoom Online Casino for example, or many other sites.
In addition to getting the games right, get your look right too. In the gaming rooms, the requirement is for “correct attire” whilst in the “Salons Privés”, a jacket is recommended for men – and no sports shoes.
During the daytime, anything goes; just keep it smart and chic – and in the evenings, you can glitz it up to your heart’s content and join the jet-set for a short while anyway.
