Life in a modern home is a non-stop carousel of endless jobs and chores. Surveys have revealed that we spend on average 26 hours every week doing household chores such as washing the dishes, laundry and vacuuming floors. The trouble is, with many of us working full-time and coping with demanding kids after school, is it any wonder that we are all run ragged for much of the time?

When time is short, it is worth investing in gadgets and appliances to help make your life easier. There will be a cost involved (unless you are lucky enough to be given something for free), but consider it money well spent. So what are the five best time-saving appliances you should buy for your home?

Dishwasher

Unless you really enjoy spending an hour every night washing the dishes, a dishwasher is a wonderful appliance. You do have to empty them of course, but this only takes a few minutes and is something you can easily delegate to one of the kids. Dishwashers save as much as four hours per week, which is time you can spend doing other things – such as catching up on your favourite TV programmes or reading that novel you were given for Christmas. And if you are in a hurry for the dishes, select a superfast wash cycle.

Self-Cleaning Oven

Cleaning a food-encrusted oven is a horrific job, but if you regularly put off the task, it won’t be long before your oven is pretty disgusting inside. There are special cleaning sprays and solutions especially designed to make cleaning an oven easier, but why bother when it is possible to buy self-cleaning ovens these days? Catalytic ovens absorb the grease and dirt when the oven is hotter than 200 degrees Celsius whereas pyrolytic ovens have a super hot 500 degree Celsius cycle that reduces any food debris to a fine ash you can then wipe away.

Steam Cleaner

Versatile and easy to use steam cleaners such as those manufactured by Karcher UK are a great way of keeping your home clean for very little effort. Unlike a traditional mop and bucket, you don’t need any detergent and the tool simply cleans the floor by blasting it with steam. This kills bacteria and removes grease and dirt, which is perfect if you have pets and children constantly muddying the place up. Steam cleaners are great on all types of hard floors and can also be used on laminate flooring.

Slow Cooker

If you hate coming home after a long day at the office, only to be faced with the question “what’s for tea?” then a slow cooker will soon become your new best friend. You can cook just about anything in a slow cooker, but where it excels is in the creation of one pot meals. All you need to do to create a tasty dish for tea is to load up the slow cooker with meat, potatoes and vegetables, plus a small amount of water and flavourings, and then leave it to cook all day. When you come home you will be met with a delicious smell and an even more delicious meal.
