Mary Kate Olsen in Jacob and Co.

A polished Mary-Kate Olsen glowed last week at the CFDA’s Seventh on Sale Gala, in a Giambattista Valli mini-dress, a fabulous pair of platform pumps and clad in Jacob and Co. jewelry. Any guesses how much the jewels that adorned Mary-Kate are worth? See after the jump for the grand total.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen open debut flagship The Row store

Ladies and gentlemen, we have very exciting news: The Row is getting its first flagship store in LA, and as you can imagine, it’s pretty amazing! Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s debut flagship store for their award-winning clothing line The Row can be found in a chic little spot on Melrose Place, but it’s not just any old spot. The exact location is where a hair salon used to be –the exact hair salon where the twins used to get their hair cut and styled when they were teenagers. How’s that for a nice and personal touch? ‘We’ve always wanted our own store; it’s always been part of the plan,” Mary-Kate said. “It was a toss-up between New York and LA., and when this space became available, we jumped on it.” “’What’s more important to talk about is that every step is really imperative to the brand and we don’t like to do everything at once,” Ashley added. “We’ll get into e-commerce sooner than later, but we want to make sure we do this right first. We will get into shoes in the next year. And hopefully mens. To us it’s really about a lifestyle, and I think this store is a great starting-off point to express where we are going.” Men and shoes in the not so distant future? We don’t think we’ve ever been this excited on a Monday morning! If you’re planning on giving the girls’ flagship store a visit, we suggest taking your bikini along with you, as the store has its very own swimming pool. We kid you not! [Grazia]

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen discuss their new fragrance with Ellen

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen made a very rare talk show appearance the other day, as they headed to The Ellen Show to discuss all things fragrance. We told you at the end of last year that the actors cum designers would be releasing not one but two fragrances under their Elizabeth and James line, and would be targeting them both towards their older fans as opposed to teens and young adults. Mary-Kate and Ashley discuss their joint fragrances Nirvana Black and Nirvana White with Ellen – similar scents with a few subtle yet distinctive differences – which epitomise their brand and the twins themselves perfectly. They also have a bit of fun in their interview too, playing a twin version of Mr and Mrs… not to be missed! Watch the video below for a bit of light-hearted fun this Monday morning.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen individually cover Allure’s December issue

A photographer could have a field day with a set of twins on a cover shoot, but Peter Lindbergh decided to shoot Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen individually for the cover of Allure magazine’s December issue. Then again we, the readers and consumers, get two gorgeous covers instead of one, so we guess the guys at Allure knew what they were doing all along. The twins do pose together in some of the editorial pictures though, just to prove that they didn’t pull the old switcheroo that we always imagine twins sometimes do for a laugh. They also open up about a number of topics, including people’s false assumptions about them… “I think people looked at us with the perception of ‘Oh, you just have everything. You can do whatever’,” Mary-Kate told the mag. “Strangers assumed we had enough money to just do nothing-or why would we go to college? And it’s such an uneducated perspective! You still have to grow within business. You have to take a chance.” And take chances they did. Would we have The Row and Elizabeth and James if they didn’t take chances? Would they have won the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year prize? Probably not! We love the Olsen twins, and will definitely be buying both covers of December’s Allure when it’s out on November 19th.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen to release two fragrances

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen will be releasing not one, but two fragrances at the beginning of next year – but unlike their previous scents that have been aimed at their younger fans, they will cater to an adult audience. Finally! The Olsen twins will be releasing Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black and Nirvana White, and the fragrances will be coming exclusively to Sephora in January. “Our brand is based on duality and this seemed the perfect way for us to explore that with a new customer at Sephora,” Mary-Kate Olsen explained. “We’ve been through this process in some ways before, but never to the extent of the process we ended up going through for this. “I’m more into oils, and that’s actually why it took so long to develop the fragrance. We didn’t want to just do another perfume. We wanted it to be able to sit on your skin like an oil, and to wear like an oil and to have that intimacy of how it becomes a part of you.” Sounds seductive! The twins have reportedly been working on the fragrances for over two years, so we have every faith that the finished products will smell gorgeous. If only they were released a month earlier… it would sure make Christmas shopping easier! [Coco Perez]

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen talk “anonymity” in The Edit

“Modern Classics”, it says on the latest cover of Net a Porter’s The Edit mag. And we think that’s the perfect phrase to describe cover stars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. We couldn’t think of a better phrase for the young designers and businesswomen. The Olsen twins keep it strictly professional, mainly posing for Miguel Riveriego’s camera in pieces from their The Row clothing line and talking all things fashion in the accompanying interview. “Anonymity is a word we talk about all the time — in life and in clothes,” Ashley said. “We saw a space in the market. We knew there wasn’t another brand offering basics in a luxurious and contemporary way. “If I wear certain designer brands, or too much of something, I look crazy, and I need something to break it up. If you are wearing a Chanel jacket and you need an anonymous piece that will show just how special that jacket is, I hope that is what The Row gives you.” That’s definitely something The Row has mastered over the years, but at the same time, we don’t think people would mind being dressed head-to-toe in The Row either. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen expand fashion empire with BeachMint stake

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen already have a pretty large bank account thanks to their numerous fashion projects including The Row and Elizabeth and James, but that doesn’t mean they’re stopping there. The Olsen twins, who if you may remember won the 2012 CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year Award, are expanding their fashion empire as they have just purchased a small stake in Beachmint, the company they co-founded back in 2011. California-based e-commerce company Beachmint.com covers the very popular JewelMint, IntiMint, ShoeMint, BeautyMint, HomeMint and StyleMint. “In our expanded roles as co-chairs of the advisory board, Ashley and I will work closely with BeachMint’s management team in this strategic phase of growth to establish the Mint brands as the leading online destination for all things fashion,” Mary-Kate said. We look forward to seeing what’s in store under the Beachmint umbrella! [WWD]

Who will steal Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s crown at the CFDA Awards this year?

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen scooped the most coveted prize at the CFDA Awards last year – Womenswear Designer of the Year – for their The Row clothing line. So who has the Council of Fashion Designers in America nominated to take their crown in 2013, you ask? Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, and Jack McCollough & Lazaro Hernandez for Proenza Schouler are all up for the prestigious award, while Steven Cox & Daniel Silver for Duckie Brown, Michael Bastian, and Thom Browne are up for the Menswear Designer of the Year prize. It’s going to be a busy night for Alexander Wang and the Proenza Schouler boys, as they are also up for the Accessory Designer of the Year award too. Phillip Lim for 3.1 Phillip Lim is also in their category… going to be a tough one to call we reckon! We may not know who will receive the aforementioned prizes, but a few of the big winners have already been revealed. Vera Wang is set to receive the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, while Riccardo Tisci will get the International Award for his “outstanding contribution to the world of fashion”. Oscar de la Renta will be honoured with the prestigious Founders Award. Congrats, guys! Who’s your money on for Womenswear Designer of the Year? And didn’t the Olsen twins look great at the nomination event by the way? [Telegraph]

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen add bags to their Elizabeth and James line!

Can we get a Hallelujah? Praise the fashion-gods because it’s now become a lot easier to own a bag designed by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, as the twins have added arm candy to their more affordable Elizabeth and James line. Although Elizabeth and James isn’t competing with the high street as far as prices are concerned, we reckon a good £600 on a bag is something a lot more fashionistas can get on board with, don’t you? “We wanted the price point to be strong, the price point is below Alexander Wang and Phillip Lim but above Marc Jacobs and Tory Burch,” MK told WWD. As much as we love the stunning bags in the twins’ The Row clothing collection, we think everyone will agree that a backpack priced at just under £35,000 isn’t the most accessible and affordable of luxury fashionable items. And from the sneaky pic of the bags below, it looks like there are some pretty special items in the new Elizabeth and James line that we wouldn’t mind saving up for… [Grazia]

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen honoured at WSJ Innovator of the Year

Huge congratulations to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen this morning, as the twins were honoured at the WSJ Innovator of the Year Awards which were held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York last night. The 26-year-old child stars turned fashion designers picked up the Innovator of the Year prize in the ‘Fashion’ category for having “an eye for nearly monastic classicism that’s redefining American luxury”. The award was presented to them by film producer Jane Rosenthal. The event was also attended by a host of other fashionable presences, including Anna Wintour who presented the ‘Design’ award to the multi-talented Patrick Kinmonth. We’re glad the Olsen twins stayed true to their signature – albeit sometimes questionable – personal sartorial styles too, as they wore dark, loose-fitting garments teamed with bags from their award-winning The Row clothing line. Very worthy winners if you ask us!

Rachel Zoe is a fan of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s $17,000 fur bag (PETA however, is not)

A few days ago, the blogosphere blew up when it emerged that Jessica Biel used her $39,000 The Row backpack as a casual beach bag. Of all the places you don’t wanna get sand, that piece of back candy should always be top of the list! However, now it looks like another backpack from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s award-winning clothing line has got people talking. Celeb stylist Rachel Zoe took to her website to rave about how much she loved the multi patchwork fur backpack (which also comes in black shiny calf skin, slate shiny alligator and black alligator) and reportedly retails for just under $17,000. Not everyone shares Rachel Zoe’s love for the bag though – PETA has once again hit out at the Olsen twins for their use of fur… “If it looks like a troll and acts like a troll, it’s probably a Trollsen Twin — or someone wearing one of their new $16,000 totes, which are made from the fur and skins of innocent animals,” a spokesperson for PETA told Gossip Cop. “What the Olsens lack in creativity, they try to make up for in shock value. Sadly, it’s the foxes, calves, and alligators — who often have the fur ripped off them while they are still conscious and able to feel pain — who pay the dearest price.” Yikes! Time for you guys to weigh in…

Elizabeth Olsen covers Marie Claire UK June in Miu Miu

We featured her older sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley just a few days ago (they were talking about their new fragrance with Ellen DeGeneres) but today it’s all about Elizabeth Olsen. The gorgeous actress is Marie Claire UK’s June cover star, shot beautifully by David Roemer and firmly getting us into the spring/summer spirit thanks to a very apt floral Miu Miu dress and a killer smile. As well as posing in hot designer threads from Lanvin to Carven, she opens up to the mag about family, feminism, and most interestingly of all, who she had plastered on her bedroom wall. (Hint: it’s probably not who you think!) “I never had a heart-throb or a band I loved, but I had Michelle Pfeiffer, so I tried to copy what my friends would do and had magazine pictures cut out in frames,” she said. “She  was the reason I wanted to be an actor.” And there we were thinking Elizabeth – or Lizzie as she prefers to be known – caught the acting bug from her famous sisters. You can read more interesting revelations in Marie Claire UK’s June issue, out today!

Ashely Olsen becomes CFDA board member

Congratulations to Ashley Olsen, as it’s just been announced that the 26-year-old The Row and Elizabeth & James designer will become a member on the board of the prestigious The Council of Fashion Designers of America. Or CFDA if that’s a bit of a mouthful. Ashley Olsen is joined in her shiny new job by Deborah Lloyd, the president and chief creative officer of Kate Spade NY, and fashion designer Prabul Gurung. The trio are replacing Yeohlee Teng, Kenneth Cole and Isabel Toledo, who now assume Emeritus Board Member status. The Olsen twins have usually come in pairs for most of their 26 years, so it’s a bit strange for Ashley not to have Mary-Kate by her side. The reason for her sister’s absence is currently unknown, but we’re hoping all will be revealed in due course. For now, let’s say a big congrats to Ashley on her wonderful new title! We can’t wait to see her in action! [WWD]

The Olsen twins and Alexander Wang among Forbes’ Brightest Fashion Stars

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are never far from a Forbes list at the end of each year, as the twin sisters who started out as child actresses have made themselves a nice little fortune (putting it lightly) with their business empire – a lot of which has been in fashion. Therefore it doesn’t surprise us to learn that they have been named in the Forbes ‘Top 30 Under 30 brightest fashion and art stars of 2012’ list. Congrats girls, well deserved as always. And now onto someone else who has had a pretty epic year in fashion himself… Alexander Wang. The list wouldn’t really have been complete without the designer who has been chosen to take over and potentially revamp Balenciaga would it? Forbes didn’t just celebrate all things fashion though, as former About a Boy and Skins actor Nicholas Hoult, and young actress Chloe Moretz were named as ones to watch, while singers such as Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, our very own Adele, and even the One Direction boys were name-checked in the ‘music world’s brightest young stars’ category. Bright young things, those Olsen twins

Quietly, patiently, and super-stylishly, the world’s most famous twins took home the most coveted award in the fashion industry. That’s right. The doe-eyed, visually alike, stylistic pole opposites, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen walked away with the Womenswear Designer of the Year award for their luxury label, The Row, at the CFDA awards earlier this week, beating fashion behemoths the likes of Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler to the prestigious accolade. They are the very 25-year-old twins, who first stepped into the limelight on the ABC sitcom Full House as babies. With a life that started with baby steps into Hollywood, and an inevitable future of acting, fame and stardom (albeit not such a fashion-centric one back then) awaiting them, the Olsen’s finally chose fashion as the industry that would define them. Their fashionable inclinations were obvious from an early age, thanks to the corny on-screen outfits the girls profess to choosing themselves, right through to their late teens, when they began to develop a more refined-alternative dress sense. In an interview with ELLE magazine, the twins discussed their affinity for modest dressing – something that clearly sets them apart from the thigh-skimming frock fraternity we’re accustomed to. This association with an alternative style has led the twins to become one of the most successful fashion duos out there today. Proud creators of luxury fashion label, The Row (the one that brought us that $39,000 backpack), the creations of which they’re seen in at countless, high profile events (as at this year’s CFDA’s); a more affordable line by the name of Elizabeth and James, alongside Olsenboye (available only in the U.S.) and StyleMint; a site that offers the experience of a personal, virtual stylist, to get you looking Olsen-ready. The win for the Olsen’s at the CFDA’S on Monday night reminded […]

Mary-Kate unveils new look at Metropolitan Gala

Mary-Kate Olsen stepped out at the Metropolitan Opera’s 125th Anniversary Gala with a shiny new look, and we at MFL love it. Olsen’s tousled locks were set in loose curls and bleached blonde for a neat, Madonna-esque style while her pale skin set against siren-red lips, injected a touch of sultry vamp. The gorgeous maxi-dress echoes Olsen’s previous grungy look, but teamed with minimal accessories, matching scarlet nail polish and a beautiful box clutch, her polished look seems miles from the girl we are used to seeing. Should we expect to see a similar transition from Ashley who was absent from the event?

The Olsen’s become tailors

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have managed that virtually impossible goal, of being a celeb and creating a successful fashion line. But like other successful celebrities turned designers, such as Victoria Beckham and Gwen Stefani, it is thanks to their unique sense of style. It is of course also helped by distancing themselves from the brand, like Gwen, using a completely unrelated name has lured in unsuspecting fashionistas. And now, thanks to the huge success of The Row, the Olsen’s have decided to launch a menswear line. The name The Row is a perfect fit, as the twins named their brand after Savile Row, which is London’s premium tailoring street, it is therefore a perfect base for a men’s collection. Interestingly, they insist on all their garments being made in America, whilst most turn to Italy or Paris for premium or China for cost, they remain loyal to American industry. “That’s our thing , an American brand made in America. When we looked in the men’s market, we couldn’t really find basics you could wear with designer, explains Ashley. The collection will launch with basics including blazers and trousers, which if the womenswear collection is anything to go by will be wearable with an edge and The Olsens admit to seeking inspiration from other men’s designers such as Tom Ford and male icons like Brad Pitt. There are 35-items in the range, with price tags you would expect from a premium collection. A t-shirt will set you back $230, whilst a cashmere overcoat costs $3,200. The Olsen’s know style, that can’t be disputed, and whilst you may worry that they won’t be capable of tackling the tricky men’s market, having chosen a palette of neutrals suggests they know what they’re doing. But the Olsen’s aren’t the only child stars jumping on […]

Why Is The Row So Expensive?

Have you ever wondered why luxury fashion brands like The Row seem so expensive compared to mainstream brands? The Row (which is Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen’s clothing line), offers minimalist womenswear with astronomical price tags. A simple cotton T-shirt can cost over $300! What makes The Row’s clothing so pricey? The Row is so expensive because of its meticulous design process, exceptionally high-quality materials, ethical American and Italian manufacturing, and exclusive brand prestige. Basically, they limit their inventory, so customers are also paying for the exclusivity of owning a piece by The Row along with the quality and craftsmanship of the product.  Want to know more? Let’s break it down. 1. It’s All About the Materials One big reason Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen’s clothing line The Row charges so much is because of the materials they use. While mainstream brands use inexpensive cotton, The Row uses the finest fabrics around. We’re talking ultra-soft cashmere, rare silks, and handpicked organic cotton. The Row works with the best mills in Italy and Japan to source these textiles. They only use the highest quality—the softest, rarest, and most durable fabrics. This level of quality comes at a literal cost. 2. Ethical Manufacturing Matters Here’s another factor driving up costs: The Row clothes are ethically made in the USA or Italy. The brand avoids cheap overseas labor. Instead, they work exclusively with ateliers that pay fair wages and ensure safe working conditions. This ethical manufacturing process allows them to oversee quality but results in higher labor costs. In the end, you pay for that artisanal craftsmanship. 3. The Minimalist Aesthetic Commands a Premium The Row is known for its muted color palette and minimalist aesthetic. Their pieces are quietly luxurious. There are no logos plastered all over or flashy trends. Instead, the beauty […]

Met Ball 2011: worst dressed

The annual Met Costume Institute Gala in New York always attracts the fashionable and fabulous. You’ve already seen our best dressed from last night’s red carpet, but unfortunately, not everyone got it right.  We understand, of course. We get het up about which dress to wear to work each day, let alone what designer gown to don to one of the most prestigious fashion events of the year. Add to that the hefty celebrity competition and hundreds of photographers capturing your every angle… well, you can see why the pressure is too much for some. Here’s our pick of celebs that missed the mark at the Met last night… Stella McCartney Whilst her buddy Madonna rocked one of Stella’s dresses and looked the best she has in years, the designer herself didn’t get it quite right. We love unusual sillohuettes and shapes but Stella’s own design was a bit too quirky for our liking. We love that hairpiece, though.   Jennifer Lopez The Latina lovely is usually a show-stopper on the red carpet, but whilst we love the shape and drapes of her Gucci gown, we felt it was ruined by the flower-embellished sleeves, overcomplicating a beautiful dress. Mary Kate Olsen Famed for her hobo chic, we didn’t exactly expect to see Mary Kate in bodycon sequins but this Givency Haute Couture dress was informal and unflattering. We’d like to see her sexy style circa 2006 return – she’s only 24, after all. Naomi Campbell One word (well, two) – over dramatic, just like the lady herself. It always surprises us when supermodels manage to make themselves look less than perfect but Naomi Campbell managed to look unflattering, haphazard and downright bizarre in her Alexander McQueen gown.

In one skinny-mini monstrosity after another, pouty posh can really wreck-em,” Amy Winehouse came in at number 2 for being a “50’s carhop horror” and Mary-Kate Olsen at number 3 because she “resembles a tattered toothpick-trapped in a hurricane.” Ooh SO harsh!
