Watch: Patricia Field on fashion, work and inspiration

It seems like I’ve been posting a lot about Patricia Field these past couple of weeks, well I guess I have. But I just had to post this video in which Field talks about how she got to where she is and her work in The Devil Wears Prada and Sex and the City. We also get a glimpse at some of the amazing pieces in her store as modelled by the presenter and Richie Rich, Amanda Lepore among others tell us why Field is such an inspiration. Its a must watch!

Patricia Field: The Stylist that can’t style herself…

As much as I love Patricia Field, she is one stylist (after Sex and the City would not have been the same without her influence and she consistently makes her clients look nothing short of fabulous. But when it comes to her own personal style, she gets it SO wrong. Her outfit choices are ill-fitting and the colours often clash, and not in a quirky, looks cool kind of way.

Patricia Field for ASOS

I love Patricia Field. As costume designer for the hit series Sex and the City, Field proved to be an integral component to the show and her creativity was an inspiration. She was responsible for many of the trends that dominated fashion during the time that women all over were gripped by Carrie and Big’s never ending love affair and I was super excited to hear that she would be creating an affordable line for none other than ASOS. Sadly the collection is nothing to write home about but there is one key piece that is worth mentioning. Both quirky and elegant, these Tri Coloured Mule Sandals, £125 definitely steal the spotlight.

Marks and Spencer has a Field Day

Marks & Spencer have done their best to shake off their dated image in the past few years, what with Supermodel Erin O’Connor and fashion icon, Twiggy acting as the face of their brand. But their latest collaboration will put even the fashionably-forward Topshop to shame , and that’s not an easy feat, you know.

We love Sarah Jessica Parker’s personal shoe names for her new collection!

Just when you thought Sarah Jessica Parker’s debut shoe collection for Nordstrom was one of the best celebrity footwear lines out there, the actress has only gone and outdone herself with the second installment. SJP’s new collection is just as dreamy as the debut range she has spent the past few months promoting – and we think the names she has given each pair of shoes is one of the main reasons why. The ‘Pat’ is a fabulous statement boot which was named after the woman who made Sex and the City as fashionable as it was – the legendary costume designer Patricia Field. “[Patricia] has been an enormous influence on me and millions of others,” Sarah gushed. “Without her contributions, Carrie Bradshaw would have been incomplete.” What a lovely thing to say – and we kind of agree too! We’d like to think that naming a gorgeous boot after her is Sarah Jessica Parker’s way of saying thank you. The ‘Serge’ boot is another highlight from the new collection, and not just because it was named after SJP’s genius hair stylist Serge Normant. The pumps are pretty desirable too – the ‘Rachel’ pump was named after her sister – aww – while the ‘Blythe’ pump was named after actress Blythe Danner. We can’t wait to see what else Sarah Jessica Parker has up her sleeve for this epic collection. Do you think naming her shoes after people she knows and admires is a nice personal touch? Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic Sex and the City tutu only cost $5, nearly didn’t get used

Carrie Bradshaw may have an enviable designer wardrobe, but it turns out that she didn’t always have such expensive taste. It’s been revealed that the iconic tutu from the opening credits of Sex and the City (and inarguably the most famous piece of clothing from the show and two movies combined) was actually a $5 bargain find. And according to costume creator Patricia Field, it very nearly didn’t get used as producer Darren Star wasn’t too keen on it. “I was in a showroom and there was a bucket on the floor, for like, $5 each or something, and I pull out this tulle skirt, and I’m like, ‘I don’t know, let’s just take this. We’ll see,’” said Patricia. “So when I showed it to Sarah Jessica, she loved it. And I said, ‘Okay, so we’ll put it with a little T-shirt,’ and she loved it. She felt it.  And then we had to convince Darren. He didn’t get it. I don’t blame him – it’s not his thing. And we were coming to him with something strange, in his mind. So we had to convince him.’” Obviously the ladies’ powers of persuasion worked a treat – and we are eternally grateful. Let this be a lesson to all you bargain bucket snobs: you never know what gems you might find in there so roll up your sleeves and get stuck in! [Daily Mail] [Image]

Galliano: the industry reacts, but why not harshly?

After what seems like a whirlwhind week of events, the shock of John Galliano’s dismissal from Dior is slowly starting to sink in. He’s now headed to rehab to resolve issues with alcohol, but will be facing trial for his anti-Semitic actions of last Thursday later this year, which could land him in prison. Meanwhile, Dior’s show is going ahead as planned this afternoon, without the designer and his famous bow. Reactions to this are still rolling in, but while much of the internet is full of “serves him right” quips to Galliano’s racist scandal, some of fashions big shots are being criticised for defending the designer. Here, we take a look at the industry’s reactions to Galliano’s sacking and the events that led up to it, and delve into why it’s excusing the enfant terrible. Franca Sozzani was the first to kick-start the designer’s defence on Monday, when she wrote this on her blog: We aren’t clear about one thing: the video starts right at the moment when Galliano launches his tirade. So one or the other must be true: either whoever took it was a master of timing, or what we are seeing is a video created for this purpose. In other words, possibly it was made by holding the mobile in the hand waiting for the celebrity – evidently provoked – to explode… An explosion was more than probable when you add together the amount of alcohol Galliano had consumed and the provocations of the people speaking to him. When Hilary Alexander interviewed Giorgio Armani, he responded with the following: “I’m very very sorry for him. It’s obviously a difficult time for him. I am also very sorry that they videotaped him without him knowing.” Chanel Iman responded to the events on Tuesday this week: “I love […]

Barbie reigns supreme

I love fashion, and I love the catwalks. But I felt suspicious and concerned when the announcement was made that Barbie would be having her own catwalk show. I could not understand what on earth a 50 year old plastic doll could have to offer other than as an advertisement for botox. But do you know what? After seeing the pink lady strut herself. I am not only a Barbie wannabe, but I have been completely converted, it was actually one of the most exciting shows I’ve seen in a long time. The show was separated into three sections; Decade, Faux Reality and Future. I’m personally loving the Faux Reality, in particular Alexander Wang’s playsuit and blazer oh and the big hair, love the big hair! The future certainly looks bright, gorgeous paired down designs with models/dolls still in their plastic wrapping! Fabulous! The show opened with Rachel Roy’s very stylish very Marilyn swimsuit. With 51 designers including Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Marchesa, Patricia Field, and Diane Von Furstenberg sending outfits down the hot pint catwalk, it was always going to be an interesting show. I also loved the DVF design, which was a perfect replica of the actual outfit she made Barbie. There were so many great outfits it’s hard to remember them all, Betsey Johnson’s emerald green was pure gorgeousness, and Bob Mackie’s totally OTT number stole the show. Donna Karan and Michael Kors used their understated style to give us classy Barbie. And then Kenneth Cole’s Barbie and Ken was pure genius. Am I gushing a little too much? The venue was packed with the usual fashion crowd and the fashionistas in the making (aka very small Barbie loving children). Does anyone know if these outfits will be made? Because if they are sign me up. I […]

Profiles: Have you heard of Andre J?

Prior to the November issue of French Vogue we hadn’t. But our curiosity about the dude whose fabulous legs outshone Carolyn Murphy’s, wasn’t peaked until we watched this video of Andre J performing Alpha Kitty duties for ex editor-in-chief of Seventeen magazine, Atoosa Rubenstein. We were so in awe of his larger than life personality that we did the obvious and went straight to Google. And after much digging, here, here and here we discovered  that…

Sex and the City: The Movie

Oh say it isn’t so! According to Grazia one of our favourite ladies will be laid to rest in the new movie, subsequently killing off the foursome that we’ve grown to know and love. Ahhh! Well I suppose we can console ourselves with the knowledge that Charlotte finally gets pregnant and Big is still looking as handsome as ever! Fashion addicts can swoon over some of the outfits here. Its great to see that stylist, Patricia Field has ensured that the ladies retain their original style whilst keeping it fresh by incorporating some of the latest trends. Charlotte is still polished and pretty, Carrie as always is ten steps ahead with her quirky ways, Miranda is unashamedly bold (I love her look in the picture after the jump. She looks stunning!) and Samantha is very much the power player.

Sex and the City film in the pipeline

Strap on your Manolos and ready yourself with a strong cosmopolitan: The news we’ve been waiting to hear is finally out. Yes, you guessed it, Sex and The City, the movie, is finally in the pipeline. For anyone who religiously followed the musings of Carrie Bradshaw, worshipped the style god that is Patricia Field, and for all the legions of fans left desolate when the hit series ended in 2004, our prayers have finally been answered, as we hear that actor Mario Cantone (a.k.a. bitchy queen Anthony Marantino) has leaked information that a script is being written by veteran scriptwriter, director and producer of the TV series, Michael Patrick King, Metro.co.uk quotes Catone as saying “I know the script is being written and I know it will be brilliant because Michael Patrick King is writing it. I know that I’m in it – I have a nice part in it, I’m told. If it happens, we should film it in the early fall I think.

Celeb vs Stylist

Received the comment below re this post. This is a question that I honestly hadn’t thought about and think its v.interesting. Finally managed to sit down and write my thoughts. This look is adorable. Patricia Field and the other young lady with the black hair and all the tats have some real panache. Sarah has style, but she is hardly a fashion icon for me. No love lost. My question is this: Is it fair to say that someone has great style and is an icon if they are pulled together by other people? A lot of these women are made and told what to do and what to wear. So is it really fair to give them kudos for things that they are not responsible for? Just a thought. I_boogie | Email | Homepage | 11.28.03 – 11:39 pm | # Personally I would give most credit to the stylist and definitely some to the celeb. You could have three celebrities wearing the same outfit and one would stand out from the rest. In SJP’s case there is something about her. Perhaps her confidence or maybe her personality but I do think she can be classed as a fashion icon. Having said that I can understand why people would disagree. In terms of whether or not its fair for the celeb to get more merit than the stylist, then no I don’t think it is but its the nature of the business. The star is in the limelight and chose to be. Whereas the stylist decided to be in the background, organising and picking the right clothes. Hopefully this may change and stylists will start to get more recognition. I really can’t lie I enjoy admiring the fashion icons, respecting the stylists and more often than not I tend […]

The Crossover Between High-End Fashion And Art

Have you ever wondered about the connection between fashion and art? Believe it or not, these two creative fields have influenced each other for centuries. From using fine art techniques in fashion design to clothing serving as inspiration for famous paintings, the fashion and art worlds are more intertwined than you may think. In this article, we’ll look at the most iconic examples of fashion meeting art. Understanding these crossovers gives an appreciation for how creative expression can take many forms. 1. The Robe à la Française Back in the 18th century, the ornate French Rococo style was all the rage. This movement within the decorative arts focused on elaborate, asymmetrical designs that prioritized decoration over simplicity. Rococo style also utilized pastel colors, gold filigree, and nature-inspired motifs. The robe à la Française reflected many of these Rococo ideals. This garment featured a fitted bodice with a low-cut square neckline that flowed into a full skirt. The overskirt was parted to reveal an underskirt, often intricately embroidered or trimmed in lace or ribbons. This iconic dress mirrored common Rococo themes seen in painting, sculpture, and architecture at the time. The robe à la Française demonstrates how fashion absorbed artistic tendencies within the cultural zeitgeist of the period. 2. Cubist Fashion In the early 20th century, Cubism was shaking up the art world. This avant-garde movement, led by Picasso and Braque, fragmented figures and objects into abstract, geometric forms. Cubist artists aimed to depict subjects from multiple viewpoints at once. Cubist style also influenced fashion design. Decorative cubist patterns were incorporated into fabrics, like those produced by the Wiener Werkstätte textile workshop. Fashion designers like Sonia Delaunay also experimented with cubist-inspired motifs in her garments. Delaunay’s Robe Simultanée, for example, featured colorful interlocking rectangles reminiscent of analytic cubism. Just as Cubist […]
