Vivienne Westwood has her say on Scottish Independence debate

Regardless of how you feel about the government or politics in general, tomorrow is a huge day that may possibly go down in history. We are of course talking about the referendum which will determine whether or not Scotland should be an independent country! Does the Scottish independence mean that we will no longer celebrate the Scottish Fashion Awards in the same way? If the vote gets a “yes”, will we have more Scottish fashion events to look forward to in the future? Will some of our favourite Scottish designers permanently relocate? Who’s to say. But one fashion femme who has had her say is the one and only Vivienne Westwood, who is never one to shy away from a political issue… “It would be absolutely great if there is a ‘yes’ vote,” the designer said. “The future could be just amazing and Scotland would be a very important influence on the world. “We just hope that Scotland can be a model for future hope and development where we have a people’s democracy instead of only everything for profit and for business and for destruction.” Despite sending her models on the catwalk with giant “yes” badges during her spring/summer 2015 show (above) don’t expect to see V-West move her fashion troops over there if Scotland does become independent though, as the designer said it would be too big a move for her… “I’ve got 200 people working for me, I just can’t relocate just like that. I will just have to keep making lots of tartan and use the Scottish mills,” she added. Well, there you have it. Where do you guys stand? And what do you think the outcome will be tomorrow? [Reuters]

Dame Vivienne Westwood takes a shower for PETA and World Water Day

Dame Vivienne Westwood isn’t afraid of making a bold or controversial statement – only this time she is using her body as well as her words to do so! The 72-year-old fashion designer has stripped naked to take a shower in a new video for PETA to raise awareness for World Water Day (March 22nd, FYI), which links the world water crisis to the overconsumption of meat. “I am an eco-warrior, but I take long showers with a clean conscience because I’m vegetarian,” Dame Viv said. “By avoiding meat, you do more for the environment than recycling or driving a hybrid car.” “The meat trade is not only the worst polluter on the planet but it also squanders most of our water. Rivers are diverted for miserable factory farms. The water goes not just to the poor overcrowded animals but to grow the 16lbs of grain it takes to make just 1lb of meat.” You can watch the video in its entirety below. Do you think Dame Vivienne Westwood makes a good point? You can find out more on the PETA website. We can’t wait to see what cause she gets behind next, because as you know, she certainly doesn’t do things by halves! [Telegraph]

Vivienne Westwood is penning her memoir!

Vivienne Westwood says what she likes, and doesn’t care who is listening, or what they might think. This may have landed her in a spot of bother over the years, but this is what will make her one of the most interesting designers to read about. Therefore, we couldn’t be happier to learn that she is joining forces with her biographer friend Ian Kelly to pen her first ever memoir. You already know it’s going to be good! “The living deserve respect. The dead deserve the truth,” Vivienne said. “Ian and I are working together on this and I am excited that this will be my story, the story nobody ever did before.” The book will be published by Picador, and it set to include contributions from her family, friends, and famous faces. It’ll also feature her work on human rights and eco-politics, and, according to Ian Kelly himself, perhaps show off a Vivienne Westwood that the world never knew existed. It promises to be very exciting, and we can’t wait until it hits the shelves! [Vogue]

Daisy Lowe models Vivienne Westwood Red Carpet Collection for Matches

Vivienne Westwood is the latest big-name designer to team up with Matches, and will be releasing a four-piece capsule collection of eveningwear out later this month! Modelled by the hottie that is Miss Daisy Lowe, the Vivienne Westwood Red Carpet Collection is admittedly nowhere near as loud and crazy as the spring/summer 2014 collection that we saw on the Paris Fashion Week catwalk a few days ago, but there’s definitely no mistaking a Vivienne Westwood piece when we see one. Especially since every one of the four dresses is a nod to an iconic V-West design, for example, the squiggle print. “The squiggle print is iconic and translates brilliantly to Vivienne Westwood’s signature red carpet gowns – effortlessly glamorous with a subversive twist,” said Natalie Kingham, a spokesperson for Matches. “They offer our clients something timeless and extremely special.” No arguments there! The Vivienne Westwood Red Carpet Collection launches at Matches on October 9th, with prices ranging from £2125 to £2970. [Vogue]

Vivienne Westwood redesigns Virgin Atlantic uniforms

Travelling Virgin Atlantic just got that bit more stylish, as Dame Vivienne Westwood has redesigned the airline’s uniforms. Virgin boss Richard Branson reportedly asked Dame Viv to step in and design some eco-friendly, expertly-tailored uniforms as he felt other airlines were starting to copy the iconic Virgin Atlantic ones that have been around for over 10 years. “My clothes have always got a very strong dynamic rapport with the body – they are very body-conscious, they help you to look glamorous, more hourglass, more woman,” Vivienne Westwood said. “I design things to help people to hopefully express their personality. “I am always trying to find fabrics that are more friendly to the environment – working with Virgin Atlantic they managed to research into this and find more eco fabrics.” What do you think of the illustrations above? We can’t wait to see the staff take to the skies in their new uniform, can you? [Vogue]

Vivienne Westwood wants Kate Middleton to recycle her outfits more

The nation seems to be divided when it comes to the Duchess of Cambridge and her penchant for stepping out in the same clothes more than once. While some people may disapprove of how Kate Middleton doesn’t make the most of the fact that she has access to pretty much any garment she wants, Dame Vivienne Westwood thinks quite the opposite… “I don’t have any advice for her, although think it would be great if she wore the same clothes over and again, because that’s very good for the environment and it would send out a very nice message,” the designer said. “If you’re going to all that trouble to get an outfit that suits you, then you should keep on wearing it. I mean you don’t have to have a red outfit one day and then something almost the same in blue the next.” This isn’t the first time the designer has spoken out about our future Queen – remember a few years ago she criticised her make-up by saying she wore too much eyeliner? Do you think V-West has a point RE the recycling or do you think Kate should step out in something new every time she makes a public appearance? [Daily Mail]

Vivienne Westwood teams up with English National Ballet

If you think ballet is all pink tutus and five-year-old little girls, then this ad campaign is just for you! Vivienne Westwood has teamed up with the English National Ballet and creative agency The Beautiful Meme to try and change people’s views and perceptions of the dance, by creating a series of stunning – and somewhat haunting – images for the campaign. “It is about taking dancers out of tutus and moving away from convention backstage images to show the intensity, creativity and hot bodies of the dancers,” said Tom Sharp, creative director of The Beautiful Meme. “The Company’s directive is to respect the tradition of ballet but build on it, and our copylines are designed to reflect but challenge a perceived view of the art form.” And if you think the dancers themselves might have something to say about the way their dance has been portrayed, worry not, because they appear to be pretty thrilled with the whole concept. (Who wouldn’t want to be photographed in Vivienne Westwood?) “It’s a dream come true to be able to collaborate with someone of such stature,” said Tamara Rojo, artistic director at the ENB. “Her designs capture the creativity and ambition of our dancers who, in turn, add drama and movement to the clothes.” We loved how Rodarte handled ballet back in the Black Swan days, but we can’t fault Vivienne Westwood’s vision either. Do you like these images as much as we do?   [Telegraph]

Jessie J undergoes a sparkling Vivienne Westwood transformation

We know that Jessie J likes to shock us with her bold, daring and slightly unconventional outfit choices… and we were in for the biggest shock of our lives when we saw her arriving for a performance at The Roundhouse in London. Gone was the poker straight bob with the super-blunt fringe, and there wasn’t a single camel-toe-inducing jumpsuit in sight. In their place was a stunning, sparkly and very sexy golden Vivienne Westwood dress, teamed with elegant Christian Louboutin sandals, a subtle name tag and long, tumbling locks tumbling down her shoulders. And is that orange nail polish we spy? Clearly someone has been reading our latest Midweek Moodboard, cough cough! In all seriousness though, we are in complete and utter love with Jessie’s new fresh-faced and fabulous look. We hope this wasn’t just a one-off!

Katy Perry looks geisha glam in Vivienne Westwood

Katy Perry won no less than three awards at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles this weekend – what an accomplishment! Thank goodness she had chosen to wear a suitably show-stopping dress. The singer wore a gown by Brit designer Vivienne Westwood which showed off her famous curves perfectly. The geisha-inspired dress had an oriental printand featured a soaring slit up the leg as well as a low neckline. The pale blush shade worked well with her skin tone and distinctive pink hair, and we love the addition of cool cobalt platform heels for a striking contrast which celebs seem to be loving at the moment. We spy a mini-trend! Katy’s hair was decorated with an iridescent blue floral headpiece which coordinated perfectly with her oriental dress and shoes. Never failing to stand out from the crowd – Katy, we salute you! [poll id=”241″]

Handbag Hunter: Vivienne Westwood small Yasmin tartan Tote

I hope you’ve all been checking up on the key trends for next season because, if you have, you’ll already know that this Vivienne Westwood small Yasmin tartan tote will be right on the fashion money. Tartan is looking set to be one of the key trends for next season, especially since we’ll be clashing our prints. Go for that tartan skirt and that tartan jacket – you’ll be able to mix this iconic Vivienne Westwood tote with your monochrome houndstooth print (like Salvatore Ferragamo) and your Chanel tartan. This little number takes Westwood’s signature bag shape to the max by integrating next season’s textured prints with luxe patent leather. And with its compact style, you’ll be able to work it with your everyday attire, that slick two-piece tux or the new soft line of next season. Known for her fabulously contemporary designs and iconic creative energy, this is your chance to work a little piece of Westwood into your own wardrobe. Unfortunately I can’t seem to work tartan myself but I will, however, be rushing to get myself the black patent version (between you and me, I saw a woman carrying it on the train and I couldn’t take my eyes off it). Vivienne Westwood Accessories, Small Yasmin Tartan Tote, £290, available from my-wardrobe.com.

Vivienne Westwood knocks Kate Middleton off her throne

Before you read the title and assume the royal marriage is now defunct, read on. Kate is still very much married to Britain’s most eligible bachelor and she still has to curtsey before the woman with a penchant for pastels and lady like handbags: Queenie. But the woman: our future- squeakily clean and perfect dimple sporting – queen has recently come into the spotlight for matters other than her immaculate Reiss and Whistles ensembles. Simultaneous firing from the fashion gentry, criticising Kate’s elevated style status, overindulged eyeliner and ‘thrifty’ trait has been interesting. See, in fashion, it is believed some people have the ‘right’ to comment and reflect, while others should silence their opinions for lack of a Vogue subscription. In my opinion: Kate Middleton is good at being as normal as they get. ‘They’ being the girls, who shop in local supermarkets, wear the same dress on more than one occasion and even agree to wear silly hats to match their husbands – who in Kate’s case just happens to be a prince. That’s all. If anything, there is a heightened need for Kate to maintain normality when reflecting on the haunting past of her late mother-in-law. In an interview with Sunday Times magazine, fashion veteran Vivienne Westwood spoke of her disagreement with Kate’s heavily kohl-rimmed eyes. This followed on from the comments made by Dutch design duo, Viktor & Rolf, who pleaded with Kate to de-kohl in order to let her natural beauty shine though. A fair criticism, considering there have been times I have seen images of Kate with her eye makeup looking stark in comparison to her rosy complexion, but you have to applaud her confidence for going DIY with the makeup brushes – even on her wedding day! But it isn’t so much Kate’s makeup […]

Love or Hate: Vivienne Westwood Anglomania Dryad checked dress

One of the disadvantages of living in inner-city areas is the lack of greenery. I, myself, have a garden but it’s modest at best. Not really big enough to swing a cat in, I often find myself going to the local park with friends when it’s sunny outside. I also love a good picnic. It is one of those quintessentially British things and beats a barbeque any day. And in an ideal world, I’d wear this dress for all my picnicking adventures. Made by the queen of British eccentricity, Dame Vivienne Westwood, the Dryad checked dress from her Anglomania label has bags of charm and is the perfect summer outfit. Made in red and white gingham, it has a wide peter pan collar, button down corset and front fastening. Being so lady-like, it’ll look darling best paired with heels or wedges. Having said that, I’m sure people would be too distracted by the dress to notice you’re wearing flats for comfort. Its old-school style also means vintage bags like satchels are the perfect accessory. Bonus points for red lippie à la Dita Von Teese. Christina Hendricks models for Vivienne Westwood

The curvaceous Mad Men actress, Christina Hendricks, has certainly bagged herself a winning high profile fashion campaign with this one, as news breaks that the fiery red head is fronting Vivienne Westwood’s Get A Life Palladium Jewellery Collection. Looking as glamorous as ever, the actress models the latest gems from Westwood’s jewellery line, said to be inspired by nature, pagan symbols and crafted from the precious metal Palladium- an element from the highly sought after platinum family. “Vivienne Westwood has always been one of my favourite designers, so it was a great honour for me to be asked to represent the ‘Get a Life’ Palladium Jewellery Collection,” explains Christina. “I admire that Vivienne uses her designs to inspire change and the pieces are just so wonderful. I love that there are dramatic pieces such as the tiara and the heart necklace as well as more simple pieces such as the acorn earrings. As Palladium is a naturally white metal, the pieces really sparkle under the lights and I cannot wait to wear them on the red carpet.” And it seems Christina’s love for Vivienne is equally reciprocated, with the iconic British fashion designer sharing just as much compassion for the Hollywood star. “Christina is the embodiment of beauty and we were delighted to have been able to involve her with this new jewellery collection. Her style is just so complimentary to my designs,” says Westwood. The collection is now available from Vivienne Westwood’s Conduit Street boutique in London as well as the LA boutique, reports SkyShowbiz. London Fashion Week AW11: Vivienne Westwood Red Label

Who: Vivienne Westwood Red Label What: AW11 Red Label collection, filled to the brim with Vivienne’s signature colourful quirky style. Thoughts: After an agonising wait, it was time to catch a first hand glimpse into one of the Britain’s most extravagant runway shows. We have to admit, we truly adore Vivienne Westwood, so when the time came to take our place inside the Royal Court of Justice at London’s Strand, our hearts were beating a little frantically with excitement. And what a show it was – wacky, crazy, colourful and eccentric are just a few adjectives that spring to mind. The collection was undeniably stunning, with oversized spray-painted hair, gold leaf face paint, statement plush red crown hats (some of which were made out of hair) and multicoloured oversized circus shawls. Makeup was clown-inspired, tailored black velvet suits were sharp and, naturally, her trademark check and tartan strip was out in full force, making way for a truly out of this world show – and one we’d gladly relive. Our highlight was catching a sneaky glimpse of one of Westwood’s Red Nose Day Shakespeare T-shirts peering through a grey shirt and blue-orange tartan two-piece, as well as seeing British model Daisy Lowe strutting her stuff down the runway – nice touch, Viv.

Who wore it best? Vivienne Westwood at the 2011 Brit Awards

After the BAFTAs, the Grammys and the Elle Style Awards, you’d think we’d have had our fair share of red carpet action for one week, but last night London played host to the 2011 Brit Awards, and golden gongs aside, there was one clear winner of the evening, sartorially speaking – Vivienne Westwood. Though the Dame of British design didn’t turn up to the awards herself – for which she designed the statues, FYI – she dressed a plethora of stars that did. Singer and rising style-setter Ellie Goulding chose a nude floorlength silk gown from the Vivienne Westwood Gold Label’s SS10 collection, whilst ghetto popstar Jessie J and ever-eccentric Paloma Faith rocked a corseted emerald minidress and floorlength sequinned dress from Vivienne Westwood’s Couture collection respectively. Pamela Anderson steals the limelight at Vivienne Westwood

What the hell was she thinking? Those were our exact thoughts when we saw Pamela Anderson at Vivienne Westwood. Didn’t she see Pam at Richie Rich during NY Fashion Week? There has to be only one reasonable explanation and that is, PR baby! Everyone’s talking about the show, whether its for all the right or the wrong reasons, the fact it they’re talking. Aside from Pamela’s performance which included the ex-Baywatch babe donning a tutu, knee high socks with her hands tied behind her back there were other things to report. The collection consisted of massive blanket style capes that would have been useful during the terrible Arctic weather we recently experienced, not to mention the wool dresses, mannish blazers, knee high socks and leg warmers. More sexy pieces came in the form of draped dresses with interesting hemlines. [Images: Catwalking.com]

Vivienne Westwood to do an Eliza Dolittle

If you thought My Fair Lady was a work of fiction, think again because it’s going to get very real. Well in as much as an unlikely girl ending up at the races. And who is the most unlikely woman to be getting involved with Royal Ascot? It has to be the ultimate rebel Vivienne Westwood. In a surprising pro-establishment move, Dame Westwood is going to be showing at Royal Ascot. Perhaps she’s realised as much as she may be a rebel at heart she’s become as much of a British institution as the Royals themselves. But one thing is certain, this Royal Ascot will be the most stylish yet. Vivienne is teaming up with milliner extraordinaire Stephen Jones. He will create an array of hats to compliment Vivienne’s fabulous designs. Racegoers will be treated to the mini catwalk shows from 16th June-20th June in the Bessborough Restaurant. The collection has been photographed by Finlay MacKay and sees models posed in a number of horsey locations. Talking about the link up, Vivienne said: “Royal Ascot is a British institution for showing off clothes and I like the idea of a group of people gathered together. It is also great to have the opportunity to work with Finlay Mackay, the photographer. He is able to access the feeling of the stables and horses and add to that great clothes, a beautiful girl and Stephen Jones’ hats. Is this the end of rebellious Westwood? Surely not, hopefully they’ll be a couple of risque outfits in there for good measure.
