See who joins Mary Katrantzou and House of Holland in BFC/Vogue Fashion Fund shortlist

Christmas has definitely come early for the six designers shortlisted for this year’s BFC/Vogue Fashion Fund, and those designers are – in no particular order of awesomeness – Mary Katrantzou, House of Holland, Zoe Jordan, Osman, Emilia Wickstead and Peter Pilotto. All worthy of the £200,000 sponsorship we think you’ll agree! “The BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund has a proven track record of enabling British designers to make the transition from rising stars to incredible international businesses,” said Caroline Rush, chief executive of the British Fashion Council. “The strength of this year’s shortlist represents a generation of talent who are ready for the financial and mentoring support that the Fund offers.” We’ll say! The Fund, which is supported by Vogue, Burberry, Clothing at Tesco, Debenhams, Harrods, Paul Smith and Topshop will offer the winner a grant to help their business, but they will also receive year-long mentoring which we think is a money-can’t-buy addition to the prize. Who do you think will follow in the footsteps of Erdem, Christopher Kane, Jonathan Saunders and Nicholas Kirkwood and pick up the prize? Answers below!

Next season’s NEWGEN recipients revealed!

The verdict is in, as the seven lucky designers chosen by the NEWGEN committee for sponsorship – including one very recent addition to the board who goes by the name of Mary Katrantzou – have been revealed. And they are, in no particular order… 1205, Marques’Almeida, Lucas Nascimento, Simone Rocha, Ryan Lo, Claire Barrow and Danielle Romeril. “Everyone who enters NEWGEN knows that this scheme, with all its unique benefits, can set them on the same road as Christopher Kane, Nicholas Kirkwood, Mary Katrantzou or JW Anderson – in other words, to be top names in international fashion,” said Sarah Mower MBE, a spokesperson for the selection committee. “I would like to thank Sir Philip Green for paving this astonishing British path to the top – Topshop’s sponsorship of NEWGEN really is held in awe by many a nation.” Ryan Lo will receive presentation sponsorship, Claire Barrow and Danielle Romeril will receive exhibition sponsorship, and 1205, Marques’Almeida, Lucas Nascimento and Simone Rocha (whose design is pictured above) will receive catwalk support. As a NEWGEN recipient herself, we have every faith that Mary Katrantzou helped the group make an informed decision. Congrats to all the designers – we can’t wait to see what they come up with for the autumn/winter 2014 season! [Vogue]

Who won what at the 2013 British Fashion Awards…

We’ve been talking about them for months, so we think you know by now that the British Fashion Awards took place in London last night. The most stylish and fashionable faces rocked up in their finest attire for the lavish ceremony, and they certainly didn’t disappoint as far as their red carpet attire was concerned. More red carpet style a little later on, but first of all let’s recap who won what… The most coveted award of the evening – British Womenswear Designer of the Year – which was last year won by Stella McCartney went to, drumroll please, Christopher Kane! 2013 is definitely his year, as he also walked away with the Scottish Designer of the Year prize a few months ago. Burberry also did very well last night, as it picked up the award for British Brand of the Year as well as Menswear Designer of the Year, while JW Anderson walked away with the New Establishment Designer award. Nicholas Kirkwood and Erdem won the respective Accessory Designer of the Year  and Red Carpet gongs. It wasn’t just about the designers though; Edie Campbell won Model of the Year, while Harry Styles was crowned British Style Award winner by the public. (Was he the one you voted for?) And of course, as we told you last week, Kate Moss picked up the Special Recognition Award  which was presented to her by her good friend Marc Jacobs. Phew – we think that’s everything. Come back later for a full roundup of the best red carpet style from last night’s event.

Suki Waterhouse covers Elle UK’s January 2014 issue

We predict that 2014 is going to be Suki Waterhouse’s year, and it looks like we aren’t the only ones thinking along those lines as she has been tapped by Elle UK to cover the magazine’s first issue of the year. Coincidence? We think not! The Burberry model and (very lucky) girlfriend of Bradley Cooper can be seen posing in a number of high fashion pieces on the cover and in the editorial, including Christopher Kane, Erdem, Simone Rocha, and of course, Burberry. Suki also talks  to the mag about her boyfriend Bradley Cooper (if he was our boyfriend, we would talk about nothing else!) and what it’s like working with BFFs Cara Delevingne and Georgia May Jagger… ‘We’ve been mates since we were kids so now, when we’re working together, it never feels like I’m on my own,” she said. “That’s such an advantage compared to the girls from abroad who know nobody. That’s why I always try and befriend new girls. Not that they always want me to!” You can read the rest of the interview and see more gorgeous pics in Elle UK’s January issue which hits

The nominations for this year’s British Fashion Awards are announced

The nominees for the British Fashion Awards have just been announced this morning, and we can reveal that Christopher Kane, Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, and Phoebe Philo for Celine will all be battling it out against each other for the most prestigious accolade of the evening: The Womenswear Designer of the Year Award. Victoria Beckham has done pretty well as she has received two nominations, one for Brand of the Year and another for Red Carpet Designer – both of which would be very coveted awards if she walked away with them. She faces competition from Antonio Berardi and Erdem for the Red Carpet award, and Alexander McQueen and Burberry for the Brand of the Year award. Marc Jacobs, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons for Dior will be going head to head to head for the International Designer award, while Cara Delevingne, Edie Campbell and Sam Rollinson are all up for Model of the Year. Yikes – we don’t envy the British Fashion Council for having to choose between them! Click here to check out the full list of nominations. The winners will be announced at the British Fashion Awards held at the  London Coliseum on Monday December 2nd. Who are your frontrunners?

How to plan a glamorous fashion party

You may have missed out on London, Paris and Milan Fashion Weeks this season, leaving you to pine for glitz, glamour and gorgeous make-up. Not by registering for nest season’s shows but by living out your fashion fantasy for real. Host your own fabulous fashion party to rival the big four and put your most fashionable foot forward. Having all these staff around will leave you free to swan about as the Anna Wintour of the evening too; great for networking. Need catering staff? Try a professional agency who will match their staff to suit your event. Send out VIP passes Like all the biggest events, you’ll need to create a little hype around your fashion party. With your invitations, send out VIP passes to ‘(Insert your name here) Fashion Week’. The intrigue will be killing your guests: What does my VIP pass get me? What IS this new fashion event? Reflecting on London Fashion Week…(Spring/Summer 2014)

The hub of all excitable activity, and displaying a manner of dressing that even those residing across the Atlantic strongly envy (yes, those polished NYC queens), London is a melting pot of acceptance and crazy, annotated flower diagrams in the name of Christopher Kane. But given the shows are essentially work affairs, where buyers behind affluent retail names come to place hefty orders, and editors come to coo at what they’ll be instructing Testino to shoot in seven or so months’ time, was fashion week on point? Did the runway looks deliver and meet expectation? Here’s what we thought: Translatability Tom Ford’s show during London Fashion Week had us, for the first time, sitting up and thinking about how a shattered crystal dress arranged in a mosaic-like effect was ever going to appear on the red carpet. Or, would we see It mademoiselle Alexa Chung rocking a teardrop cut-out dress from Christopher Kane’s spring 2014 collection at some high profile shindig? Some of the clothes worked – like Emilio de la Morena’s relaxed-but-city-slick separates and even Topshop Unique’s impressive line-up of printed spaghetti strap dresses and curved, cropped shirts – when it came to mentally visualising them on ‘real’ people in the ‘real’ world, but the goth cyber chick at Mark Fast made it hard to maintain that focus. Out of touch? In a rather interesting piece rounding up the shows in London, Cathy Horyn made a very valuable point: “As I went around London, to places and streets filled with ordinary people, I had the sense, more than ever, that fashion here was taking place in vacuum. Do they care about Christopher Kane’s naïve drapes and twisted flower dresses? If the public doesn’t appear to be even remotely listening, whom are we talking to?” With street style running the gamut at […]

Emma Watson talks The Green Carpet Challenge in Net a Porter’s The Edit

Not just a pretty face, that Emma Watson. We guess we kind of knew that when she got accepted to study at Brown University in America, but now her latest project, the green carpet challenge, has definitely proven it. The green carpet challenge is the brainchild of Livia Firth, an initiative that supports ethical and beautiful fashion which the likes of Victoria Beckham, Roland Mouret, Christopher Kane, Erdem and Burberry have all got behind. “I would love to wear garments that are ethically sourced, but there aren’t enough options for me to be able to do that realistically,” Emma told The Edit. “It just seemed like the project was something I had to do, something I’d been waiting for.” And since it was the Emmys last night (more on that later) we also thought it was appropriate to hear how Emma herself prepares for the red carpet… “Getting ready for an event can feel like a lot of pressure,” she began. “You have to consider, ‘Will people see up my skirt? If a flash goes off, can you see through this?’ So I’ll do a test sitting, a test standing… It’s nerve-wracking. People really scrutinize. “On the red carpet, I’m usually in so much discomfort – my shoes are uncomfortable, I can’t breathe in the dress. I don’t compromise like that in my everyday style.” You’d never guess that Emma, or the rest of the stars, are uncomfortable in their red carpet clothes, would you? You can see the rest of the ‘green’ clothes Emma is modelling in the new issue of Net a Porter’s The Edit.

London Fashion Week SS14 Day 4 highlights

Osman Taking a more summer appropriate (natch) approach for spring/summer 14, the vivid pinks and limes of last year were watered down to pretty pastels, with flashes of dainty embellishment. Skirts were sometimes gauzy, cut asymmetrically to produce a floaty effect that made the fabric appear like it slid away from the body. Voluminous coats, surprisingly, are a key piece for next season, given their not so climate appropriate use in summer (well, it is Britain after all), and a three-quarter sleeved candy pink number worn over black trousers won us over. Not so much a winner: the skirt-over-trousers look – it’s far too don’t-wanna-go-there Nineties for us! Erdem Always a show season biggie, Erdem’s tougher stance on the runway was welcomed with opened arms. After enticing us with zingy neons, expertly combined with fragile lace for spring/summer 2013, this time around, he took us on a monochrome adventure. Still working his famed ladylike wearability into this high impact collection, Mr. Moraliaglu gave us sheer skirts sat pretty atop couture-level sweatshirts; a come hither black lace gown was made more wearable over a crisp white shirt, and neat collar and pocket details brought a somewhat masculine edge to his work. Shoes remain major, however – a far cry from the kind of dainty strap sandal you’d wear with an Erdem number: think rebelliously chunky platform soles made interesting with splashes of bold print. Tom Ford High octane as always, Tom Ford’s show was, possibly, the hottest ticket of the fashion month schedule this side of the Atlantic, making the hearts of several editors beat faster than they do on deadline day. A lesson in indulgence it was, as Mr. Tom Ford set about presenting the most luxurious of oversized leathers in burnt caramel; a sexed-up, thigh skimming dress dripping in […]

2 Ways to wear the denim jacket

We all know the perennially cool status of the humble jean, and how every single denim piece in our wardrobe is worn to within an inch of its indigo existence. From the denim shirt to those go-to skinnies and that can’t-dress-without-it short; these are all cult classics we couldn’t possibly imagine donating to the nearest charity shop. But there are a few denim guises that may have, what you call, slipped the net, and one that particularly comes to mind is the denim jacket. An afterthought for many denim lovers, the infectious double denim trend has pushed aside this ideal summer cover-up (with the denim shirt taking to the throne), and we’ve since seen it make a come back in a more novel light (see: J Brand for Christopher Kane, and more recently, Mary Katrantzou x Current Elliot). So, to revive its rightful status as a summer wardrobe staple, we’re celebrating the easy cover-up in its most desirable form: the J Brand 403 Destructed Jacket. And it’s not so difficult to style either. In fact here are two easy and super-stylish ways you can wear the denim jacket from day to night. Just add a slouchy black tee to both looks, and you’re good to go! am look: Punctuate an off-duty look with a dose of denim, by pairing the 403 Destructed Jacket with bold skinnies, and statement boots. A gold watch will finish the look nicely. pm look: Add a dash of dancefloor-appropriate glamour, by teaming the 403 Destructed Jacket with a printed mini and metallic heels. Just add a boxy cross-body bag for carrying essentials. J Brand 403 destructed denim jacket, £233.57, available at J Brand.

British Fashion Council NEWGEN SS14 recipients revealed

The British Fashion Council has just announced the nine recipients of the coveted Newgen sponsorship for the upcoming spring/summer 2014 season of London Fashion Week. We’re definitely looking forward to seeing what they have up their sleeves for the new season. J. Emma Watson is fresh-faced and fab for her fourth Teen Vogue cover

Teen Vogue can’t seem to get enough of Emma Watson, as her August 2013 cover is the fourth time she has posed for the magazine. We think we see the appeal! Emma was shot by Boo George, and is looking fresh faced and fabulous on the cover and throughout the editorial. The 23-year-old Bling Ring actress (and former Harry Potter actress, but that goes without saying, right?) is wearing an enviable selection of clothes in her shoot, including Isabel Marant houndstooth skinny jeans, a Saint Laurent coat, and a bold 3.1 Phillip Lim top. Well that’s the wardrobe that was selected for her, but what about her personal style choices? Where does she like to shop herself? “I shop at Aritzia and Topshop, and I also love A.P.C. and 3.1 Phillip Lim,” she told the mag. “Chanel is amazing, and I wore a really beautiful black Dior dress recently that I thought was really cool. And I love Christopher Kane, Peter Pilotto…I’m always keeping an eye out for people who are new or up-and-coming.” We definitely don’t have the funds to fill our wardrobe with Chanel, but it’s nice to know she loves the British High Street too! Emma’s Teen Vogue issue is out July 2nd. Get it before it’s gone! [Fashion Gone Rogue]

The Top 10 Summer Sandals Edit

Slipping into summer sandals marks the beginning of taking pedicured (baby) steps into the sunnier climes – or so we like to hope! And just like we’ve shed the knits, winter coats and layer upon layer of casual t-shirts, it’s high time we did the same in the shoe department. Summer sandals took several guises on the spring/summer 2013 catwalks; from mid-heels to super-embellished, metallics to lovely lace-ups, and we couldn’t be more excited to start the somewhat ritualistic pairing of shoes and summer outfits! It all depends on the look and comfort level you’re going for. Often, summer sandals are associated with gladiator-like, flat styles, but don’t limit yourself to heel-less options. Our top picks aren’t necessarily sandals you want to strut around in, but more of beach-to-bar style. We’ve done the handiwork of rounding up 10 of the best summer sandals, now its your turn to start the outfit imagining! Marc by Marc Jacobs sandal, £300, Shoescribe: This tri-block colour, mid-heel sandal is perfect for pairing with a floaty dress for a late-night summer soiree. Isabel Marant Elvis sandal, £370, Matches: This summer is set to be summer’s biggest hit. Wear with denim cut-off shorts and a louche tee for a relaxed summer look. Matilda woven sandal, £30, Topshop: Nothing says summer quite like a woven piece, and these pretty, feminine sandals hit the spot! Faster studded flat sandal, £25, Asos: These flat sandals have a Christopher Kane-esque feel to them, and we’re not complaining! Comfort and style rolled into one. Primrose leopard animal print multi strap sandal, £25, Stylistpick: If you’re stuck on colours for summer, this sandals mixes up print and pastels to perfection. Pair with a floaty maxi dress for beach-to-bar style. Christian Louboutin Druide sandal, £595, Net-a-Porter: These mid-heel sandals scream WOW! Then again, anything […]

Conde Nast College: A school only for the rich, or everyone?

Aristotle once said, “The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet”, and that’s the kind of heavy philosophical note we’re starting on. Drummed into us from a tender age is the idea that an education is the way to a better, easier, richer, and somewhat happier life. An educational tale filled with impressive qualifications and peppered with shining references is probably the ideal meal ticket for many, but the current educational climate has left many a student’s pocket in permanent drought, and their minds in permanent frustration. So, when we came across a Q&A with Susie Forbes, head of the controversial and recently opened CondéNastCollege of Fashion & Design, we couldn’t help but ponder over some of the claims made, not to mention the extortion that is the course fees. Earlier when we reported of its inception, CondéNastCollege of Fashion & Design was just a dream in development. Glossy magazines and annual subscriptions are the story of every aspiring fashion personality, but getting educated by Vogue is on another level, maybe of epic, tick-your-bucket-list proportions. In the Q&A, Forbes revealed the initial course offering, Vogue Fashion Certificate, is fully subscribed, and with the October intake for the Vogue Fashion Foundation Diploma set to further bump up figures. But it’s not the implementation of the chic college, or the collective of stellar staff and speakers that’s left us dumbstruck, but the cost of obtaining these non-standard qualifications. Both courses on offer at CondéNastCollege of Fashion & Design are not ‘recognised’ qualifications and seek to give students only a glimpse into a world they may one day want to inhabit. But at a cost of £6,600.00, excluding VAT and £19,560.00, excluding VAT respectively, this could prove a very costly insight. Although scholarships are available (three a year, to be precise), […]

Are they fur real?

Now that we’ve witnessed the future of fashion in the present, that is to say, jumped six months ahead to peek into next season, we’ve deduced, deliberated and pondered over how the designs houses painted their autumn/winter canvasses. Was it a hot metallic mess? Did tartan tantalise? Yes, both of these trends were prominent in the autumn/winter 2013-14 collections, but another not so welcome trend also dominated, from the Parisian to the Milanese runways: fur. The real stuff. The stuff that riles PETA and animal lovers alike. Although we’re not firing up a pro/anti fur dialogue here, what surprised us was the number of design houses that resorted to an unabashed display of the luxury animal skin; dipped in fluoro-bright shades, wrapped artfully around shoulders and even enveloping bags in the hide of a furry mammal. No. Not an ideal accessory. Were you, too, taken aback by the abundance of fur on the autumn/winter runways this fashion month? Given that wrongdoing in the often cruel and inhumane world of fur trade is so rife and openly published across various media platforms, does the sight of a Christopher Kane fox fur biker, or a fur-inspired Fendi mohawk hairpiece feel inspirational for the spin they put on the traditionally luxury fabric, or does the ostentatious display of manipulated fur make you come over a little queasy? Unsurprisingly, it was the major fashion houses – Fendi, Chanel and Tom Ford- that gave us a worrying amount of fur to contend with. And with major fashion personalities, editors and select celebrities wearing and supporting sales of real fur, it’s sadly a trend that won’t die easy. But it doesn’t just stop at fur. Snake, crocodile and pony skin and leather was splashed across the runways for next season, giving rise to the return of […]

London Fashion Week AW13: Highlights from Day 4

It;s nearing the end of yet another eventful and outstanding season at London Fashion Week, and we couldn’t be more excited about the offerings for next season! But as the saying goes, the best is usually saved till last, and so it was onto day 4 of the fash week schedule. Big shot fashion names were on the schedule for day 4, including Tom Ford (gush!), Erdem and Christopher Kane, and we couldn’t be more pleased with what these geniuses put before our eyes for next season! From Burberry to Peter Pilotto, packed with the most exciting names in fashion and the most anticipated shows in the Fashion Month calendar, here are all the highlights you need from day 4 of London Fashion Week: Burberry With Tom Odell serenading show attendees at the catwalk entrance, this show was only set to be on thing: the greatest. Every season, Burberry is the most buzzed about show, attracting a stellar frow (Rita Ora, Tinine Tempah and Kate Beckinsale were all in attendance). And for autumn/winter 2013-14, the fashion crowd was left just a positively dumbstruck.  Last season’s fizzy metallics turned glossy and grown up this season, as honeyed caramel trench coats and translucent pencil skirts mixed with skilfully subdued leopard print; a cute heart print on a collared shirt and dress broke the rules, whilst the emphasis on luxe animal prints accented with hard details made this collection a whole lot of fun. Christopher Kane Colour-pop belted buckles; fur-wrapped shoulders and a heavy dose of Kane’s charm made for an eye-pleasing collection. For autumn/winter 2013-14, Christopher Kane – with his PPR gold star badge pinned proudly to his chest – brought us camo print in its most desirable form, and ensured pleated minis and centre-slit skirts tugged at our heart strings. Packed with Kane’s signature bare midriffs; we were also treated to […]

Channel next seasons trends as soon as they hit the catwalk!

[noskim] Today marks the start of London Fashion Week (LFW), where designers and fashionistas will descend into London for the next 4 days to see the looks and trends that contemporary designer brands have in store for Autumn/Winter 2013. LFW is the second in the series of ‘Big Four’ fashion weeks, which closely follows New York Fashion Week (NYFW) and is a prelude to the Paris and Milan Fashion Weeks. This year some of the biggest names in UK fashion will be showcasing their work, including Mulberry, Vivienne Westwood, Burberry and Christopher Kane; there will also be some of the heavy hitters from across the pond showcasing their work, such as Tom Ford and L’Wren Scott. The big four fashion shows also offer an opportunity to catch a glimpse to see what the big name celebrities will be sporting in the upcoming months; you are bound to see an array of well-heeled celebrities, buyers, and fashion journalists taking their place on the front rows as they admire the Autumn/Winter 13 showcases direct from the showroom. Based on what we saw at NYFW, we can expect a plethora of stripes, embellishment, and lace incorporated into the latest AW13 collections. However, you needn’t be one of the well-heeled celebrities in order to keep abreast of what is happening at the LFW shows; more and more fashion labels are beginning to make their runway shows much more accessible to consumers. Many big name fashion labels have started to stream or digitally broadcast their shows online, which allows consumers to keep up with fashion-related developments. Burberry have gone one step further by allowing particularly enthusiastic customers to purchase garments as soon as they have been shown on the catwalk. Similarly, this year, UK fashion giant Topshop have teamed up with Google + to broadcast […]

David Koma, Holly Fulton and Michael van der Ham win BFC Fashion Forward sponsorship

Big congratulations to designers David Koma, Holly Fulton and Michael van der Ham this morning, as it’s just been announced that they have received the coveted BFC Fashion Forward sponsorship for this year. “David, Holly and Michael are three very worthy recipients of the 2013 Fashion Forward scheme,” said BFC chief executive Caroline Rush. “We have seen them grow through the NEWGEN scheme and are pleased to see their businesses progress to the next level of Fashion Forward sponsorship. We look forward to seeing their collections at London Fashion Week in February.” Previous recipients of the Fashion Forward sponsorship include Henry Holland, Christopher Kane and Mary Katrantzou, so we understandably expect great things from these rising talents. We can’t wait to see what they have lined up for us during London Fashion Week next month. [Image]

10 of the best trends of 2012

We can’t believe 2012 is drawing to a close so fast, and with festive prep in full blast, we’ve taken out a little time to help you reflect on the trends that defined the runways of 2012. From ornate embellishment to luxe leather; gym gear gone glam to shirtless collars – 2012 brought several lasting pieces and styles to our wardrobes. To refresh your memory, as next season creeps upon the ever-moving world of fashion, here’s to a trip down trend memory lane to refresh your fashion mindset, and cleanse the mental palate to make way for next season’s stunning wares. Sports luxe: Olympic fever gripped the globe this year, and with so much fitness apparel, fine abs and Tom Daley in full view, designers couldn’t help but take gym gear up a few chic notches; off the treadmill and straight onto the runway(with a few modifications, obvs). Embellishment: The SS’12 shows marked the beginning of our obsession with festooning everything from cardis to clutches and slippers to socks. Even for a/w’12, Lanvin and Balmain delivered heavy smatterings of crystals and beading to their fashionable wares, whilst Christopher Kane’s embellished clutches and jeans became summer staples. We approved. Collars: Dismantling the shirt, a firm wardrobe staple, left us with a collar and free reign to do anything to it! What started out as a pretty and prim game of peek-a-boo atop cosy knits Alexa (yes, she) wore with dresses and shirts underneath became a full-blown global phenomenon. Encrusted with stones; crisp white; metallic; printed or Peter Pan versions, the collar did pretty well at pushing the statement necklace of its pedestal. Candy shades: Probably the biggest summer trend to slip into our wardrobes, pastel shades were everywhere! We blame the house of Louis Vuitton for getting us unhealthily hooked on shades of […]

Fashion musical chairs: The Wang-Balenciaga brouhaha

Describing himself as “determined, hard working and energetic” in an interview with Asia Tatler, Alexander Wang should’ve added “pro at creating a buzz (iness)” to that list. And determination twinned with the entire fash packs energy is what it has taken to understand the rapidly evolving game of fashion house musical chairs that has played out this year. Dior became the new home of Raf Simons. Jil was back at Sander. Hedi skinny trouser hopped to Yves Saint Laurent. Stefano Pilati adopted a new baby called Ermenegildo Zegna, and, the most hyped about creative transfer at the tail end of 2012: Alexander Wang filling Nicolas Ghesquière’s rather large shoes. The Chinese-American designer is the darling of New York Fashion Week, and has perfected his art of not just designing, but entrepreneur-ing (there, we invented a whole new word) in a competitive, and, often repetitive industry. Much like DJ Sliink’s ‘Putcha Ya Back Into It’, the soundtrack to his SS’13 runway show, Wang has also been putting in back breaking effort to land the top job at one of Europe’s most revered fashion houses. Taking over from Ghesquière’s 15-year tenure at the fashion house that balances history with modernity to perfection, both 28-year old Wang’s age and design aesthetic have been flung into the not-so-positive limelight. The design house shuffle will see Wang take over as creative director at Balenciaga, but continue to design for his eponymous, privately-controlled label that has amassed approximately $60 million in sales. Let’s not forget that this long-haired, super-successful man is only 28 and presented his first ready-to-wear collection to the blinded-by-the-commercial-fog eyes of New York’s fashion scene in 2007. Wang is an astute businessman and a fantastic designer, doing what he does very well. He didn’t appear on the scene professing a new design legacy or with […]

A very blonde Kylie Minogue for Elle UK January 2013

2013 is getting off to a very good start indeed, as joining Lea Michele and Sienna Miller as January magazine cover stars is the legendary Kylie Minogue. The pint-sized Aussie was photographed by Cuneyt Akeroglu and is sporting a very blonde hair colour for the cover of Elle UK’s January, prompting us to ask: have we spotted a new trend for the new year already? 2012 was all about the dip dye jobs, so could 2013 be bringing back the peroxide blonde look? Watch this space! The rest of the magazine cover is just as pure, simple and clean, as the singer  is sporting a gorgeous white dress from Christopher Kane’s spring/summer 2013 collection. Just wow! The only thing that is causing a few eyebrows to be raised at MFL HQ is the location of Kylie’s second leg… is this the first Photoshop of the new year or is the singer just sitting rather awkwardly? Answers on a postcard! Ps: if you’re a subscriber, you have a stunning black and white close-up of Ms Minogue’s face to look forward to. You won’t be disappointed!

Alexander Wang in at Balenciaga?

Despite all the early rumours about Christopher Kane landing the Balenciaga job, Alexander Wang’s name has now been thrown into the equation too. And according to New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn, it looks pretty likely that he could take Nicolas Ghesquière’s place as Creative Director of the brand. “In the continuing Balenciaga drama, Alexander Wang appears to be the leading candidate to succeed the star designer Nicolas Ghesquière, and an announcement of his appointment could be made as early as next week, a Paris source with knowledge of the discussions said on Wednesday night,” she wrote on the New York Times fashion blog, On The Runway. We know we should take all fashion rumours with a pinch of salt, but let’s not forget that it was Cathy Horyn who broke the news about Raf Simons heading to Dior back in April… What do we think? Do we think she is telling the truth, and more importantly do we think Alexander Wang would be a good replacement? There are only two days left until Nicolas Ghesquière officially leaves Balenciaga, so a decision needs to be made pretty quickly either way! [Telegraph]

Who won what at the 2012 British Fashion Awards…

Back in September, we revealed all the nominations for the prestigious 2012 British Fashion Awards, and now it’s time to find out which designers, models and fashion personalities walked away with accolades at last night’s event. The main prize was of course the coveted Designer of the Year award, with Stella McCartney, Mary Katrantzou and Christopher Kane battling it out against each other. Despite the blatant stiff competition, it was Stella McCartney who walked away with the prize, so a massive congratulations for all her achievements this year – and overall! Although we can’t argue the fact that both Mary Katrantzou and Christopher Kane have had tremendous years – probably the best in their careers so far – our money was on Stella from the start; we think the Olympics sealed the deal for her! And if the most coveted award of the night wasn’t enough for Ms McCartney, she also walked away with the Designer Brand of the Year gong! As you may have worked out, we are quite fond of 20-year-old Cara Delevingne, which is why we couldn’t be happier to learn that she was crowned Best Model. Another My Fashion Life favourite is Alexa Chung, who was the well-deserved recipient of the British Style award! Congrats, ladies! We also need to congratulate the wonderful Erdem Moralioglu for winning the New Establishment award, and Roksanda Illincic for picking up the Red Carpet award. JW Anderson and Jonathan Saunders also deserve a round of applause for walking away with the respective Emerging Talent (ready-to-wear) and Emerging Talent (mensweaer) awards. As we told you a few weeks ago, Manolo Blahnik was awarded with the Outstanding Achievement accolade, while Harold Tillman CBE, picked up a Special Recognition prize. Phew! 2012 has been an incredible year for British fashion; a huge congratulations […]

Runway to Real Life: Get these catwalk looks for less

Want more fash for your cash? As cringe-inducing as this one-liner may sound, the thought of bagging a designer look for less sure excites the hell out of us. And you, too! Autumn/winter 2012 brought with it many a covetable catwalk look; all blissfully beautiful but painfully pricey. But instead of sitting around racking our brains about how to possibly fund another expensive-looking season, we decided to search high and low to bring you our favourite looks from this season’s runways at a fraction of their price! Prada will always remain the trend trailblazer every fashion season, and this season was no exception. Her geometric printed suits and uber-desirable embellished platform Mary Janes had the fash pack at hello, so it’s only natural for those whom aren’t blessed with a fashion fund of Wintour proportions to want Miuccia’s looks for less. Here’s how to rock that suit without breaking the bank… Co-ord Premium Geo Tweed Jacket and Trousers, £345, available at Topshop; Ladea Mary Jane Pumps, £210.26, available at shopbop; French Connection Lurex Waisted Belt, £16, available at Asos; Michelle Black Doctors Style Bag, £28, available at Boohoo. Military influence swept through the world of fashion like a trusty British shower for A/W’12, and Altuzarra, amongst other top designers, put out the most desirable coats paying homage to this trend. A pea coat with military-inspired details has been at the top of our lust list since February, and here’s how you can bag one without depleting your entire fashion fund. Mango Wool Mix Peacoat, £114.99, available at John Lewis; Marrakesh Black Velvet Mid Rise Kick Flare Jean, £174, available at My Wardrobe; Gambit Metallic Detail Courts, £55, available at Topshop. Does a fashion season ever go by without Christopher Kane sending our hearts aflutter? A firm favourite with fashion editors; the likes of Kane […]

Stella McCartney gets three nominations for the 2012 British Fashion Awards

The nominees for this year’s British Fashion Awards were announced at The Savoy last night, with Stella McCartney finding herself up for three gongs! “2012 has been a momentous year and seen a nationwide celebration of British talent,” said Harold Tillman, chairman of the British Fashion Council. “The British Fashion Awards recognise and celebrate the exceptional individuals and brands who’ve defined out fashion industry over the past year and we’re incredibly proud to announce these nominees who represent a cross section of British fashion talent.” Stella is up for the coveted ‘Designer of the Year’ award (makes sense, seeing as she kitted Team GB out for the Olympic and Paralympic Games), but joining her in the category are Mary Katrantzou and Christopher Kane, who have also had an epic year in fashion. Going to be a tough one to call if you ask us; who’s your money on? Alexander McQueen, Mulberry and Burberry join Stella McCartney in the ‘Designer Brand of the Year’ category, while JW Anderson, Michael van der Ham and Simone Rocha are battling it out against each other for the ‘Emerging Talent Award for Ready-To-Wear’. Click here to check out the full list of nominees, and to remind yourselves who walked away with the prizes last year. Don’t forget, the British Fashion Awards take place on November 27th, so check back here to find out who the all-important winners were.

Emma Stone gets futuristic for Interview, talks hair colours and heartbreak

Actress-of-the-moment Emma Stone is a long way away from the usual girl-next-door we normally associate her with, as she poses for a very futuristic photoshoot for Interview.  As well as donning some gorgeous outfits from the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin, Versace, Christopher Kane and Haider Ackermann (among others) for Mikael Jansson’s camera, Emma opens up to the mag about more personal matters. “I was crawling on the floor,” she told the magazine about going through a break-up. “I remember throwing up … within the hour. I remember being on the floor … I have never felt anything quite like that. It was so visceral. It’s like someone has killed you and you have to live through it and watch it happen … It was awful.” Aww, can we hug her? We know she has her The Amazing Spider-Man hottie boyfriend Andrew Garfield now, but still… On a slightly less depressing note, she also speaks out about her hair colour, which is apparently always a hot topic of discussion. “I had to dye it red for Superbad,” she said. “They didn’t let me go back to blonde until Spider-Man.  “Now I’m back to my roots. But I get a lot of questions about hair colour. People are very into talking about hair. Why do you think that is? Is it because I’m a girl?” We can’t say for sure Emma; but we’d wager it might have something to do with the fact that you look gorgeous no matter what, and people want to get some tips from you?  Just a hunch! Mary Katrantzou partners with Vodafone

We’ve been fans of Mary Queen of Prints Katrantzou from the get go, so we couldn’t be happier to learn that we’ll be seeing a lot more of her during these next two seasons of London Fashion Week. The designer has teamed up with Vodafone to let fans (that would be us!) into her world by offering exclusive access to the collections and even the chance to meet her. (What would you even say to Mary Katrantzou if you got a moment alone with her? We think we’d lead with her thinking behind that literal pencil skirt… genius!) “I am excited to be working with Vodafone, as a brand they have really cemented their credibility and support within the fashion industry over the past few seasons,” she said. “Their innovation elements really appeal to me and it felt a natural fit to join forces. I’m really looking forward to be able to widen the fashion net to their customers and bring them to the front line of fashion week.” The collaboration won’t be hugely dissimilar to the Richard Nicoll and Christopher Kane ones… so if it’s even half as successful, we’re going to be in for a real treat! 5 investment-worthy pieces to ease you into Fall

Struggling to step into autumn style? Fear not, we’re here to help! We’ve picked out 5 key pieces that’ll help you ease into Fall 2012 without the pressure of committing to a frighteningly experimental wardrobe! Mannish coats and jackets were all the rage on the autumn/winter 2012 runways, with YSL, Proenza Schouler and Christopher Kane giving us a taste of what to be seen in come September. Berry hues were a major hit in line with autumn’s moody attitude, while printed trousers are well and truly here to stay, thanks to the psychedelic versions we witnessed at Prada. Purple is the SS’12-sorbet-Louis-Vuitton-lemon of Fall 2012, and set to be splashed across every possible item of clothing this season; covet the colour in a pair of ultra-feminine, easy-to-wear courts. And finally, the finishing touch is an uber-desirable bag, naturally. But we’re not talking ‘It’ bag material here. For Fall handbags have undergone a chic-over: stripped down to the essential parts, with a minimal but polished feel. The Pashli satchel is the perfect accessory addition to any discerning fashionistas wardrobe. Black Origami Collar Melton Wool Coat by Vivienne Westwood, £578 Clem Sweater by DAGMAR, £134 Cream And Black Dani Printed Trousers by By Malene Birger, £101 Anette High Pointed Court Shoe by Diane Von Furstenberg, £215 Petrol Green Pashli Satchel by 3.1 Phillip Lim, £830

Stella McCartney launches Central Saint Martins sponsorship program

We all know that Central Saint Martins is THE college to get into if you’re an aspiring fashion designer (after all, past students include Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Christopher Kane and of course, Stella McCartney) but we also know that not everyone can afford the privilege of attending. Therefore, Stella McCartney has announced that she will be funding a new scholarship program which aims to financially help MA Fashion students at the prestigious college. “To get into a college like this so hard for so many talented young people,” Stella said. “For that reason, I am setting up this scholarship and I encourage other fortunate fashion houses to do the same.” We think this is a brilliant idea! What a perfect way for all the successful designers to give back! Stella will be offering £25,000 worth of funding every year, with the first of the scholarships being awarded this October! There are a few conditions though… in keeping with the designer’s morals, the students must agree to not use any fur, leather or other animal products. Sounds fair, right? [Vogue]

Tuesday Shoesday: Hats off to Flats!

As we welcome with open arms the long-awaited intervention of the glorious sun into grey British weather, the other highly anticipated intervention is a fashionable one; a fashionable and  comfortable one in fact. Let us introduce the new season shoe-crush: the Comfort Sandal. You may frown upon this concept at first, thinking they fall into Scholl territory, but, one glance at the spring/summer 2012 catwalks and you’ll realise that even the designers were crushing on the heelless shoe. Championed at Christopher Kane in the form of pool sandals, and dearly accepted by the fashion clique, we knew straight off flats were the new high. Metallic soles with black leather straps and Perspex upper detailing showed up at 3.1 Phillip Lim, whilst Alexander Wang put out the lugged rubber sole, perforated lambskin Karlie sandal we instantly fell head over flats in love with (pun intended). Although leaning towards the season’s prominent sporty trend, Kane paired his with pretty florals and glistening brocade minis and 3.1 Phillip Lim thought nothing of the Comfort Sandal looking equally desirable with Easter egg pastels. It’s no longer a crime to omit heels from your outfit, especially when the alternative looks this good! Channel the trend with our hot-to-trot Comfort Sandal picks and give your over-worked, over-heeled feet a well-deserved summer break! 1. Pastiche Metallic Sandals, £70, available at Topshop 2. 3.1 Phillip Lim Mirrored Metallic Sandals, £335, available at My Theresa 3. Ann Demeulemeester women’s Camoscio Skeletal Sandals, £600, available at LN-CC 4. Senso Indiana Patent Strapped Sandals, £125, available at ASOS 5. Monday Musings: The things rattling our fashion brains on the hardest day of the week

Pierre Balmain can make you look like Emanuelle Alt (YES!) They keep telling us we can resemble the lithe, nonchalant French Vogue editrix if we snap up some Pierre Balmain pieces, from the subtly priced second line for Balmain. Basically, YES! We do want to look like the chicest French woman in the world, who hardly tries but still manages to look a bajillion dollars! Think soft tees, ultra-structured blazers and black skinnies in luxe leather or denim. The only was is Alt. Watch the Pierre Balmain Fall/Winter 2012-13 video here. Marni at H&M extortion We’re still recovering from the beauty of the Marni at H&M collaboration. The collection of exquisite brocades, sequins, sparkle and statement jewellery launched on March 8, and was a far more civil and orderly affair than its predecessors. A wristband system ensured shoppers weren’t crushed to within an inch of their lives (the norm for some fashion lovers) but before we knew it, pieces we’re advertising on eBay for triple the retail price. Vogue.co.uk reported that around 700 pieces have already been listed on eBay from all over the country, selling at majorly hefty prices to what they were bought for. Defies the idea of an affordable collaboration, we think, and if we wanted to pay big bucks we’d head straight to Marni, not via H&M. Naughty eBay sellers. Nothing like a heat wave to bring out the sorbet shades! We bet you all spent the weekend revelling in whatever sunshine was peeking though the clouds. It was truly a godsend for the fashion conscious, as it meant we could whip out our sorbet shades that have been sitting so patiently in our wardrobes since we bought them! Long live Jonathan Saunders’ pop pastels and the iridescent floral lusciousness of a Christopher Kane skirt. More […]

The 2012 Independent Spirit Awards: The best dressed

Oscars, they may not be, but that doesn’t mean the outfits worn on the red carpet were any less exciting. In fact, a few of the looks worn at the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards were far better received at MFL HQ than some of those from yesterday’s Academy Awards. Is it because the attendees are so desperate to get it right on the Oscars red carpet that they hold back or play it safe?

Monday Musings: The things rattling our fashion brains on the hardest day of the week

This early fashion week morning at My Fashion Life HQ, Starbucks and fashion week invite holder in tow – before we dash out to today’s shows – we’re mulling over…. Doing it Lana style – Mulberry’s ‘Del Rey’ Bag A handbag named in your honour is today’s trademark of ultimate fame. You’ve bagged it (pardon the pun) if Emma Hill wants to name one of her world famous creations after you, and Lana, you’re just that. Needless to say, Alexa may be feeling a slight budge off her Mulberry throne, as the ‘Del Rey’ is the first celeb-dedicated bag post-Alexa Satchel. The ever loyal Lana sat front row at the brand’s autumn winter 2012 show, namesake bag in tow. Let’s see where this Mulberry collaboration takes Ms. Del Rey…. Brits Style The Brits are being held tomorrow and are even more exciting because it is during Fashion Week! Rihanna’s impromptu appearance at Stella McCartney’s autumn winter show gave us a taste of things to come, and we hope it isn’t just the outfit choices that surprise us at this year’s Brits. Tipped to win big is mega-voiced, bouffant-wielding, Adele and scruffy singing sensation Ed Sheeran. But being fashion people, it’s the outfits we’re really concerned with, and we can’t wait to see what Jessie J puts together this time! Remainder of London Fashion Week We can’t believe day 4 of London Fashion Week is upon us, and feel as though today all the MAJOR shows are happening all at once! The designers at the forefront ofLondon’s unique fashion aesthetic – Erdem, Christopher Kane, Peter Pilotto and Michael Van Der Ham – are taking centre stage today, and, although we’re still spellbound from their spring summer 2012 shows, we can’t wait for next season! A concoction ofLondon’s eclectic talent all in […]

Our Top 3 to Watch at London Fashion Week!

Here at MFL we are super excited about the prospect of London Fashion Week and can’t wait to see what the crème de la crème of British design has in store for us. However, we have to admit, it can be a bit of a minefield deciding who we should be focusing on. After all, there are around 100 designers showing this year! That being said, there are three shows in particular we shall not be missing. They are the designers we get most excited about; the most talked about, the most exciting and the most creative. Here are our top three ones to watch… BURBERRY PRORSUM It pretty much goes without saying, but the bi-annual Burberry Prorsum shows have become major events in the national style calendar. It is a brand which makes us proud to be British and captures the imagination of the whole world. We can’t wait to see what Christopher Bailey has in store this time round. Of course, we can’t go without mentioning the amazing Tweetwalk happening again for the second time. Ingeniously, now Burberry’s twitter followers can view the collection even before it heads out on the runway! CHRISTOPHER KANE The genius that is Christopher Kane never fails to get us lusting after his new collections. Even now, seasons later, we are still yearning for his 2011 Resort Collection galaxy print dresses. And don’t even get us started on those A/W 10 floral embroidered leather jackets. Sigh. Iconic pieces in their own right, his collections never fail to cause a stir. As one of the most unique talents in British fashion, Christopher Kane’s show definitely can’t be missed. VIVIENNE WESTWOOD As the matriarch of British fashion, Vivienne Westwood’s shows are always a lesson in how it’s done. Her collections are a feast for the eyes and the […]

Tuesday Shoesday: This week’s lust-worthy foot fancies

Even though everyday should be a ‘Shoesday’, we’ve decided to aptly use the most rhyming day of the week, and voila! No, that isn’t the real reason! It’s the day after the most depressing day of the week, and a little shoe therapy wouldn’t go amiss, along with 7-10 cakes, wine by the litre and a 10-week holiday.
