London Fashion Week AW11: Vivienne Westwood Red Label

Who: Vivienne Westwood Red Label What: AW11 Red Label collection, filled to the brim with Vivienne’s signature colourful quirky style. Thoughts: After an agonising wait, it was time to catch a first hand glimpse into one of the Britain’s most extravagant runway shows. We have to admit, we truly adore Vivienne Westwood, so when the time came to take our place inside the Royal Court of Justice at London’s Strand, our hearts were beating a little frantically with excitement. And what a show it was – wacky, crazy, colourful and eccentric are just a few adjectives that spring to mind. The collection was undeniably stunning, with oversized spray-painted hair, gold leaf face paint, statement plush red crown hats (some of which were made out of hair) and multicoloured oversized circus shawls. Makeup was clown-inspired, tailored black velvet suits were sharp and, naturally, her trademark check and tartan strip was out in full force, making way for a truly out of this world show – and one we’d gladly relive. Our highlight was catching a sneaky glimpse of one of Westwood’s Red Nose Day Shakespeare T-shirts peering through a grey shirt and blue-orange tartan two-piece, as well as seeing British model Daisy Lowe strutting her stuff down the runway – nice touch, Viv.

British Fashion Awards 2010: what they wore

The fashionistas were out in full force last night as London’s Savoy Hotel and Theatre played host to this year’s British Fashion Awards – and boy did the stars dress to impress. So sit back, relax, and enjoy our pick of the crème de la crème of last night’s best dressed. First up is Naomi Campbell who wore a stunning full length black sheer gown, complete with matching faux fur shrug – all courtesy of close friend Alexander McQueen; an honouring tribute to the late fashion designer who died in February this year. Following in the British fashion footsteps was young Hollywood starlet Emma Roberts in a fun and flirty Julien McDonald party frock – the youthful black and blue glitzy design proved an utterly perfect choice for the little star. Picking up the British Style Award on the night was the ever fashionable Alexa Chung, wearing an SS11 pastel pink Chanel frock with ostrich feather trim – Ms. Chung certainly proved her style credentials were worthy of recognition. Top models were also undoubtedly dressed to perfection, with Lara Stone in Calvin Klein, Claudia Schiffer in Mary Katrantzou and the gorgeous Daisy Lowe in a gothic Elie Saab number – it just goes to show Britain certainly knows how to create some serious sartorial statements. Last but not least, and possibly our favourite of them all, is the beautiful Victoria Beckham wearing one of her own designs to last night’s fashion Oscars – the first of which she’s been nominated for. The highly-praised fashion designer has come a long way since her former Spice Girl days, wouldn’t you agree? So well done ladies, here’s to an super stylish 2010 – all we can say now is roll on next year.

Down the Rabbit Hole for the Tom Binns collection

We’d already been given a sneak preview of the Tom Binns collaboration with Disney Couture jewellery, so when we were invited to a private view of the new Alice in Wonderland film and the accompanying jewellery collection we couldn’t decide which we were more excited to see. When we weren’t mingling with other guests, including LFW favourite Erdem and boutique owner Brix Smith Start, we managed to get a good look at the jewellery on show. The range is made up of two collections, the first being a high-end limited edition collection, and the second for Disney’s popular jewellery line. The second is made up of about 35 pieces that range from trinket filled charm bracelets to quirky rings and necklaces inspired by all of our favourite Wonderland characters. Especially covetable is an oversized gold keyhole necklace with cut-out detailing that hangs on the end of a long chain, which Daisy Lowe wore to last week’s London premiere of the film. But perhaps the most stunning pieces are from to the limited edition signature collection, which comprises 6 pieces based on the significant characters in the story. My personal favourite is a necklace inspired by the Red Queen , a real showpiece that is made up of hundreds of tiny red resin hearts joined together. As for the much-awaited film, our expectations weren’t disappointed either, as Tim Burton’s adaptation was a real treat. The gothic costumes and impressive mix of animation and reality made for a really visually indulgent film. In true Burton style, the characters were tinged with a sinister darkness and watching it in 3D really felt like we’d taken that trip down the rabbit hole too. Both collections are available now at Selfridges and some of the Tom Binns for Disney couture is available from ASOS.com, accessories […]

Alexandra Shulman battles against size zero

At last! Alexandra Shulman, editor of British Vogue and, therefore, one of the most important individuals in the fashion world, has said what we’ve all been thinking. Yes, Shulman has spoken out against the ‘jutting bones and no breasts or hips look’ that designers have been increasingly pushing down the catwalks since the advent of the waif in the 90s. In a letter to a variety of fashion designers and houses – including Karl Lagerfeld, John Galliano, Prada, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent and Balenciaga – Shulman said that Vogue was being supplied with minuscule sample garments which forced them to hire tiny models which the magazine then had to airbrush to look larger and appeal to readers.

Little Pixie Geldof lands the cover of Vogue Italia

This is a surprising turn for the fashion bible. Vogue Italia is generally considered to be the most elegant of all the major Vogue titles, boasting great stylists and forward thinking shoots. It therefore comes as a bit of a shock to see Pixie Geldof draped on the front cover. She is of course the least hateful of the Geldof’s and does have a great sense of style. But the front cover of Vogue is generally reserved for only the cream of the fashion crop, so it does seem a little strange and dare I say unjust? Pixie was shot by Steven Meisel for Vogue Italia and appears alongside best friend, co-model and celebrity offspring

Interviews: Celebrity Stylist, Zoe Lem

In the world of fashion, Zoe Lem does it all. Whether it’s styling the stars for the red carpet and participants on the UK version of “What Not to Wear, or flying off to the Middle East to work with the English language version of the Al-Jazeera news network, she’s been there, done that, and with a certain je ne sais quoi. Lem trained as a designer before deciding to focus on styling, and now her work can be seen on A-list celebs, magazine covers, music videos, and a myriad of other places. So, the favourite question to ask stylists and designers: who would you consider to be your biggest influences? That really is a difficult one to give a one word answer, I am very inspired by vintage clothing and the 20’s through to 50’s there was such beautiful style. If it’s who rather than what, then there is no one person. But my mother was really so into clothing growing up, even now her favorite shop is Topshop and she has a very funky style. I was brought up on charity shops, markets and finding great bargains in unusual places, a long while before it was cool to go for second hand chic!

How To Incorporate French Bistro Design Into Your Kitchen

If you’re currently seeking new ideas for your kitchen, look no further than the timeless bistro kitchen. It’s stylish, cozy and above all inviting. With a center island, bar stools, open shelving and cookware on display, it’s the perfect design if you fancy yourself as a Gordon Ramsay wannabee and love the idea of having family and friends gather in the kitchen while you whip up a gourmet meal. Best of all, you don’t have to install a new kitchen, buy radiators, invest in expensive furniture or break the bank to obtain your dream kitchen. We’re pleased to tell you that the bistro design can be achieved on a budget. By adding just a few essential touches, you too can give your kitchen that quaint, French restaurant feel. Display Cookware Visible pots and pans and open shelving are one of the main characteristics of a bistro style kitchen. Opt for both wall and ceiling mounted racks and for added authenticity invest in copper or steels cookware. Strategically place your favourite flowers and cookbooks on the shelves for extra character. Flooring  While there is no set tile pattern distinctive to the bistro kitchen, black and white flooring oozes French charm. If you’re not too keen on the traditional black and white checked floors, enhance your kitchen with either hexagonal or penny tiling complemented against a backdrop of plain white wall tiles. Lighting Contemporary soft pendant lighting sets the mood perfectly. Low hanging lights above a center island are ideal and if you’re feeling adventurous, experiment with the lighting. Contrast larger hanging lights with smaller pendant lighting and contrast coloured and metal lamp shades for extra personality. Chalkboards A bistro style kitchen would not be complete without a chalkboard. Scribble the “dinner of the day” for all the family to see or use it […]

Taylor Swift signs Diet Coke sponsorship deal

We loved what Jean Paul Gaultier has done with Diet Coke since becoming temporary creative director of the drink, but it looks like he’s handed over the reigns to the young Taylor Swift. The country singing sensation isn’t designing bottles a’ la JPG though, and will instead be fronting the ad campaigns for the drink for the foreseeable future. Do you think she is a good sponsor? “I wanted to share some news with you, because we’re finally making it official with one of the great loves of my life…Diet Coke,” she wrote on her Twitter page. “I’ve said for years that Diet Coke just ‘gets me’ and my lifestyle,” she added in a statement. I’m so excited about our new partnership.” Good luck to Taylor – the fizzy drink sponsorship biz is quite a lucrative one to fingers crossed she doesn’t do a Britney and mess it up. Let’s not forget that she has competition from the one and only Beyonce who has signed a deal with rival brand Pepsi. May the best singer/drink win… [Daily Mail]

Top Womenswear Trends for Autumn 2012

The fashion catwalk shows previewing autumn 2012 collections, from Milan and Paris to New York, all signalled certain key trends in womenswear that are likely to make their way to the high street for the coming season. Jackets Its all about androdgeny next season. Womenswear inspired by traditional menswear was arguably the defining trend of the catwalk shows for autumn 2012. From 1920s-style dandy-esque smoking jackets and tuxedos to the more masculine straight lines of the 1970s, retro menswear was the evident theme in collections from everyone from Gucci, Emilio Pucci and Miu Miu to Victor & Rolf, Max Mara and Isable Marant. Such jackets are often combined with countryside-chic fabrics such as plaid and tartans. Check out some of the best high street examples of women’s jackets we found from Crew Clothing, and River Island. Gothic One of the key trends to emerge for Autumn 2012 from the catwalks was gothic fashion. Mining the darker seams of fairytales and gothic romance fiction, capes, riding boots and ruffled blousons combined with tuxedo-esque jackets were highly visible. Leading the way was Frida Giannini’s collection for Gucci, where the theme stretched from day to evening wear. All-black outfits are an option, although teaming them with a brown belt or white shirt can make a pleasing contrast. Oriental Embroidered dragons and flowers adorned short-cut jackets and full-length dresses in Dries Van Noten’s catwalk collection, while Issa took inspiration from the Orient for wraparound robes and tight-fitting dresses. Oriental prints will be a feature of the high street this autumn, while more intricate embroidered designs will be all over the high-end stores. Ripped Denim Daisy Dukes with ripped edges and visible pocket linings have been the key trend in summer shorts this year. The theme of distressed denim has been taken over into the […]

Where we went on FNO: the high street

This is a guest post by Lois Mills, one of our (frankly brilliant) competition winners. Last night we sent her on a special mission to sift out the sweetest soirees taking place on the high street at Fashion’s Night Out – and not one to turn down a challenge, she triumphed in her task. Here, Lois shares her experiences on her very first Fashion’s Night Out… The night everyone has been talking about has arrived: Vogue’s Fashion’s Night Out. You know that you can only expect greatness when three of the best words in the dictionary are used all in the same title (and in case you’re having a little difficulty choosing which three words I mean, let’s just say I’m not a fan of the ‘out’doors!). Having caught a little of what happened at last year’s events, and having spoken to Daisy (the other competition winner) about what to wear, I was giving my outfit choice some serious consideration. In the end I went for a very Seventiess vibe, with high-waist purple velvet trousers, a green vintage vest and a studded black belt; topped off with a retro pair of glasses and a black wedge-and-sock combo for my feet! On the train, I was busily taking advantage of the VFNO app; discovering what was going on in every store whilst viciously scribbling them down, trying to be strategic and rank them in order of importance and closeness to one another. A few minutes later, and my list was longer than Oxford Street itself – tonight was going to be hectic! For me, the night began in John Lewis – there were three fashion shows running over the course of the evening, and Mischa Barton was present at one of them. Fingers crossed. I was at the first show, and […]

Listen up all you fashion lovers, it’s that time of year when award ceremonies are in full swing and Hangbag.com needs your casting votes to get their online Fashion Awards for 2011 underway. And so do we. The fashion forward site is searching for the best British and international fashion blogs and online retailers – and you could be one of them! Simply vote for yourself in the appropriate category and get as many of your friends, family members and frenemies to do the same – the more you get, the better chance you have of winning. But, of course, you can also vote for your other favourite brands or blogs (ahem!), and we’d love to receive your vote for Best British Blog. Just remember nominations close at midnight on March 25th, where the 50 entries with the most votes will be passed on to a panel of judges, who will then draw up an eagerly anticipated shortlist in April. So to get your votes well and truly underway, simply click here and cast your confirmation.

Editor’s diary: what I’m wearing day 1

Afternoon, folks! So the first day of London Fashion Week is in full swing, as if my aching feet don’t know it. Here’s what I’m wearing today – a Sixties shift dress from ASOS, nude opaques, cork platforms from Office and my trusty Barbour jacket. Oh, and I’m also showing off my new Daisy Jewellery Chakra bracelet for the first time – apparently it’ll let creativity flow through me. And, of course, I’ve got a spare pair of flats in my bag (London’s cobbles are nothing if not tiresome and treacherous). Popped backstage at Maria Grachvogel this morning before watching her amazing salon show (more on that later) and have just been backstage at Sass & Bide to film some hair and makeup vids. Must dash, Felder Felder’s next, followed by Bora Aksu and PPQ later. Stay tuned for the first round of reviews… Follow us on Twitter for on-the-go updates.
