Top 50 Fashion Designers In The World

Ever wondered who the top 50 fashion designers in the world are? Well, wonder no more. We’ve put together a list most famous fashion designers from around the globe. From past icons to current trailblazers who are setting the trends right now, here’s a comprehensive deep dive into the best fashion designers without whom the fashion industry just wouldn’t be the same. 1. Coco Chanel If there’s one iconic fashion designer who’s influenced the industry more than any other, it’s definitely Coco Chanel. She brought something new to the table, freeing women from the restrictions of frills and corsets, instead offering up simple, comfortable styles. And today, more than 50 years after her passing, her influence is still felt. Coco Chanel’s early life wasn’t an easy one, marked by tragedy and hardship. Her mother passed away when she was young, and she and her siblings had to be raised at an orphanage. Despite everything, Chanel was determined to make a name for herself in the world. Her designs stood out from the crowd, effortless and refined. She transformed fabrics that were traditionally associated with men’s clothing, like tweed and jersey, into chic, comfy pieces for women. The late designer will always be remembered for her creation of the little black dress, which is still a wardrobe staple for many. Chanel also branched out into the fragrance industry, launching her famous Chanel No. 5 perfume in 1921. She was a trendsetter in more ways than one, using groundbreaking marketing techniques to promote her work. And even now, you can spot her signature CC logo anywhere. 2. Giorgio Armani Giorgio Armani is a name that screams luxury and style, and this Italian designer has been a prominent figure in fashion since the 70s. 10 Icons Who Redefined Style & Fashion Over The Past Decade

Fashion is often described as a cycle: every generation draws on aesthetic inspiration from past generations. Cowboy boots are in again, but not as they were in the 80s and not how they will be in the 2040s. But there are always icons that completely turn the fashion world on its head. 10 Fashion Icons That Redefined Fashion in the 2020s A fashion icon is someone who creates a cultural conversation and captures our imaginations for years to come.  Here are 10 icons that fit that description now and, likely, in the future. 1. Lil Nas X Rap and Hip Hop artists have long been at the forefront of fashion but are rarely praised for it. You can’t ignore Lil Nas X’s fashion moments. His pink cowboy Versace look at the Grammy Awards was stunning, but the confidence he brings with his outfits cements his icon status. 2. Britney Spears The princess of pop and fashion icon Britney Spears continues to inspire modern trends to this day. With Gen Z bringing back the Y2K trend, we’re starting to see Spears-inspired outfits and accessories, like denim on denim, low-rise jeans, matching workout wear, and pigtails again. 3. Rihanna Rihanna is a trendsetter in her own right for popularizing baggy jeans and crop tops, but her power as an icon goes well beyond that. Her Met Gala outfits are a sight to behold, especially the golden ensemble made by Guo Pei, which took 50,000 hours, or two years, to make. 4. Harry Styles Harry Styles broke the internet and the gender binary when he wore the Harris Reed dress in Vogue magazine. Styles is often seen wearing a mix of masculine and feminine silhouettes, including Victorian-era blouses with slacks and Peter Pan collars with pearl necklaces. 5. Victoria Beckham It would be […]

Ropes and Ropes of Pearls: How Our Grandmas’ Jewelry is Our New Obsession

You have probably heard a dozen times that pearls are making a huge comeback. Thrown in a corner of shade and oblivion for a few years by diamonds and statement bling, pearls waited patiently to return in the spotlight and regain their former glory. If you ask some specialists, pearls never went out of fashion, not even for a second. However, they were left aside as ceremonial jewelry for weddings and sweet sixteen celebrations – demure staples of femininity but too quiet to shine as bright as modern accessories. But everything changed in 2014 and since then, pearls are the new diamonds in town, proving once again that Coco Chanel was a visionary and a woman way ahead of her times. The famous designer once said that women needed “ropes and ropes of pearls” and her words were repeated throughout history. But are we still living the Jackie O. times, or are we wearing pearls in big, bold designs to match our contemporary jewelry frenzy? Taking a look back, we can clearly see that pearls overcame their “demure” reputation and turned into veritable statement pieces all women are dying to wear. How Did Pearls Become So Popular? The answer to this question can be easily found on runways and last years’ fashion shows. As per usual, Chanel set the tone, the music and the scene for one of the boldest and most original comebacks in history. Chanel’s spring 2014 fashion show brought larger pearls in chunky, massive and high-end contemporary designs and the world followed. Soon, Karl Lagerfeld displayed massive pearls as well on the catwalk. Oscar de la Renta placed the pearls on booties, while Simone Rocha adorned everything with pearls, including knee socks. A year later, Honor and Lanvin sent a cascade of pearls on their runways during […]

Spotlight on Narciso Rodriguez…

Who is Narciso Rodriguez? In a nutshell, he’s an American designer whose shows we always get excited for during New York Fashion Week, as he never fails to deliver exciting, transitional and all-round inspiring pieces season after season. He has a pretty impressive celebrity following too, and counts Jessica Alba as one of his biggest A-list fans (alongside the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker ad even First Lady Michelle Obama), who does a fantastic job of showing the world how the pieces should be work with the utmost style and wow factor. Granted she would look good in almost anything, but that shouldn’t take anything away from the intricate nature of a Narciso Rodriguez design. Basically what we’re trying to say is that your wardrobe could do a lot worse than being filled with Narciso Rodriguez; your bank account, on the other hand, not so much. Or so it/you thought. There’s a gargantuan sale of Narciso Rodriguez items on Avenue 32 at the moment, where some of the hottest pieces we have been lusting after all year have been slashed in price, making them super duper affordable. Kim Kardashian’s Vogue cover on track to be top-seller!

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s American Vogue April cover was probably one of the most controversial in the magazine’s recent history. But we guess the saying “there’s no such thing as bad press” is very true on this occasion, as Kimye’s Marmite cover is well on route to becoming one of the fashion Bible’s most popular issues in years! Take that, haters! It’s being reported that the Vogue US April 2014 issue is due to sell between 300,000 and 400,000 copies, which would put it right up there with the magazine’s top-selling issues such as Beyonce’s March 2013 cover which sold about 355,000 copies, and Michelle Obama’s the very next month which sold just under 300,000. Love them or hate them, we can’t seem to get enough of them. The proof is in the Vogue pudding! [Page Six]

“Following a trend does feel quite oppressive” – Erdem Moralioglu

With Couture Fashion Week hitting Paris later this month, the autumn/winter 2014 collections making their runway debut next month and the current spring/summer 2014 a campaigns still doing the rounds, we will totally forgive you if you’re a bit overwhelmed with trends. But don’t worry too much, because Erdem Moralioglu doesn’t think they’re as important as they used to be! “It’s impossible to escape the idea that there are certain movements in a season – the same as there are with architecture and art – though I think the idea of simply following a trend does feel quite oppressive,” he said. “I’ve been obsessed with the way women looked since I was very young and was always either making dresses for my sister’s dolls or drawing them,” he continued. “I thought, ‘Can this obsession of mine become a job? Is it something you do?’ Eventually I discovered it was.” Erdem has dressed everyone from Alexa Chung to First Lady Michelle Obama, and certainly knows a thing or two about making women look and feel good, so we’re all too happy to listen to what he has to say. Not only is the proof in the aesthetic of his designs, but he also has a shiny Red Carpet accolade that he picked up at the 2013 British Fashion Awards at the end of last year. Do you agree with him re trends? It’ll certainly make updating our wardrobes easier and cheaper if we weren’t so influenced by the current trends, right? Let us know your thoughts! [Fashion Times]

Style Awards: 10 best dressed of 2013

The Oscars, the Grammys, and more red carpet premieres than you can shake a stick at – 2013 definitely gave us some stylish highs and lows. However we’re focusing on the former as opposed to the latter as we were always taught that “if you haven’t got anything nice to say, don’t say it at all”, and that’s what we’re sticking to. For this post, anyway! We’ve trawled through the style archives to find our ultimate best-dressed stars of 2013, and we’ve finally settled on a top 10. Yes, there were sleepless nights,  arguments, and copious amounts of coffee consumption, but we’re satisfied with our verdict. Let us know if you agree with us, and whether you think we’ve left anyone out. Or given someone a spot they don’t deserve! Jennifer Lawrence in Dior at the Oscars. The belle of the ball, the ultimate Princess living every little girl’s sartorial dream! Angelina Jolie in Saint Laurent at World War Z premiere. Angelina was all-smiles on the red carpet, and we can’t help but smile when looking at this stunning image of her! Taylor Swift in Reem Acra at Winter Whites charity gala. The perfect regal ensemble to wear to sing karaoke with Prince William and Jon Bon Jovi! Cate Blanchett in Alexander McQueen at Blue Jasmine premiere. Cate really wowed on her Blue Jasmine promo tour, but this monochrome creation was our utter favourite. Simply magical! Sandra Bullock in J Mendel at the Venice Film Festival. The ladies in red! Sandra was sexy, smouldering, sharp… and did we already say sexy? Michelle Obama in Jason Wu at the Inauguration Ball. Michelle Obama made Jason Wu’s day year life by once again choosing him to design her gown for the historical event! Rihanna in Azzedine Alaia at the Grammy Awards. Red […]

Best celebrity guests on Sesame Street

As First Lady of the United States, it’s safe to say Michelle Obama has some impressive predecessors to live up to. From Dolly Madison to Eleanor Roosevelt and of course, Jackie Kennedy, there’s always pressure on the President’s wife to carve out her own niche in history. Michelle’s done a fantastic job so far of winning people over to causes close to her heart, including childhood obesity and military families – helped by her impeccable taste in smart ladies jackets and fitted dresses. However, all that pales in comparison to the shoes Mrs Obama has just stepped into – celebrity guest on Sesame Street. Blending pre-school entertainment with intelligent pop culture comedy for mums and dads, the series has been running for an amazing 44 years, in which time it has welcomed the great and good from all walks of life. Here are some previous stars who set the bar particularly high. Natalie Portman, 2003 Natalie Portman threw herself into this 2003 guest spot with adorable gusto, joining Elmo for a performance of the inexplicably bizarre ‘The Princess And The Elephant’. Initially typecast as ‘the Princess,’ she jumps into an elephant costume in what might be an attempt at steering little girls away from their pretty-in-pink Disney obsession, but could also just have been a chance to practise her trumpeting. Johnny Cash, 1973 If anyone was going to win over perennially anti-social bin-dweller Oscar the Grouch, it would be Arkansas’s professionally glum country music star Johnny Cash, singing the story of ‘Nasty Dan’. The ‘Man In Black’ notably wasn’t for his 1973 appearance on the show – although his famous stage attire was worn in honour of ‘the poor and beaten down/living in the hungry, hopeless side of town,’ poverty doesn’t exist in the Sesame Street utopia, so he went […]

Ladylike style: Prim and proper, or just plain boring? (We can’t decide)

We want a twee twinset, live for Celine’s floaty, knee-length skirts, and can’t say no to a good old British afternoon tea: are we really turning into FLOTUS/K. Middy clones, with our sensible slingbacks and a penchant for co-ordinated accessories? OK, let’s blame Zara (and Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton for attributing ‘fetch (yes, fetch) status to low-heeled pointy slingbacks our mothers would probably like to steal borrow. But what about the appropriate dressing bit?  Kate Middleton (naturally) champions it; Michelle Obama has pretty much nailed the haute housewife look, occasionally throwing an awe-inspiring Jason Wu number into the mix. And, now, even Kim Kardashian is doing a personal rendition of conservative, FROW-worthy looks for everyday, thanks to beau Kanye’s influence squeezing every last bandage dress out of her wardrobe. But, it’s interesting to figure out whether this realigning of wardrobe affairs to rival our mothers’ is due to the above-mentioned tastemakers constantly being forced before our eyes. If it weren’t for the hundredth mention of Kate’s coat-dress or the First Lady’s hemline sparking a new wave of anti-thigh skimming-anything trendsetters, would we care so much for a demure dress? Bringing us back to reality with his sharp comments on the First Lady’s attire, a few months back, Simon Doonan put it bluntly: “She dresses appropriately. I don’t think of her as being chic.” It holds true, that we dress in accordance with our roles and duties, and, often relay messages about our identity through the daily sartorial choices we make. But can the chic-factor immediately be dropped when an influential position is at the forefront? Doonan’s comments also sparked the following question in our minds: If appropriate dressing can’t be chic, then is the housewife trend a redundant fad? There was a time (pre –Kate Middleton), when sensible dresses, simple pumps […]

Jason Wu collaborates with Lancôme

Oh boy, we love a good designer/beauty collaboration, and we predict the Jason Wu and Lancôme one that has just been announced will be the cream of the crop! “In so many ways, Lancôme shares a lot of the same DNA as my brand — it’s feminine and there’s something quite classic about it that never gets old,” Michelle Obama’s fave designer said. “I think make-up is one of the closest parts to fashion – it goes hand in hand in almost every single case. When you have great hair and make-up, it brings out the clothes even more. This is one of my favourite collaborations I’ve ever done.” The 15-piece limited edition make-up range will launch in September during New York Fashion Week, and will feature three eye shadow palettes, red lipstick, mascara and nail polish. Basically everything a girl needs to look and feel fabulous. We can’t wait for this to hit the shelves! [WWD] [Image]

Kerry Washington tops Vanity Fair’s Best Dressed 2013 list

Congratulations to Kerry Washington, as the stunning actress has just been given the coveted top spot in Vanity Fair’s prestigious Best Dressed 2013 list. Do you guys agree with the magazine’s choice? Predictably, Kate Middleton and Victoria Beckham also made the list, coming third and sixth respectively. Other ladies who inevitably made the list are Gisele, Beyonce, Dita von Teese and Charlize Theron, who secured the seventh, 11th, 27th and 34th spots. The blogosphere has expressed its disappointment that Michelle Obama didn’t make the list, and we definitely feel the same way as the First Lady has been on fire this year as far as her sartorial choices are concerned. The red hot Jason Wu dress that she wore to the Inauguration Ball alone was best-dressed worthy, don’t you think? We’re also pretty miffed that the likes of Alexa Chung, Olivia Palermo, Jessica Alba, Blake Lively and Miranda Kerr were omitted given their enviable styles. Click here to check out the full list and let us know who else you think should have been included.

Jason Wu in at Hugo Boss

Mass collaborator (and Michelle Obama fave) Jason Wu has taken on another project, and it’s quit a big’un… Jason Wu has been appointed the new creative director of Hugo Boss’s Boss womenswear label, meaning he will be in charge of both ready-to-wear and accessories. A big responsibility but we reckon he’s up to it! “I have long been a fan of Hugo Boss’ vast tradition and lineage in extraordinary tailoring,” he said. “With the state-of-the-art facilities that are unique to the Hugo Boss design labs, I plan to develop a strong, feminine womenswear collection that reciprocates the brand’s authority in menswear.” Sounds promising. We can expect to see Jason Wu’s first offering for Hugo Boss during New York Fashion Week in February. We wonder how he will combine masculine influences in the womenswear… [Vogue]

Prabal Gurung redesigns All Nippon Airways uniforms

Dame Vivienne Westwood isn’t the only designer to recently create an airline’s uniforms, oh no. While V-West may have given the Virgin Atlantic crew’s uniforms a make-over, Singapore-born Prabal Gurung will be lending his creative talents to All Nippon Airways to help it celebrate its 60th anniversary in style. “The new uniform will pay homage to the history of the airline while incorporating a fresh and modern perspective,” the designer said, also adding that it was an “honour” to be selected for the task. The uniforms will be worn by around 10,000 members of staff, so we hope he isn’t feeling the pressure. Then again, once you’ve dressed A-list actresses such as Anne Hathaway and  Kate Hudson, as well as First Lady Michelle Obama and even our very own Duchess of Cambridge, anything else should be a breeze, right? We can expect to see the uniforms unveiled in late 2014. [Telegraph]

Beyonce, Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Middleton among Time’s 100 Most Influential

It’s that time of the year again – the time when the Time 100 Most Influential People in the World list is announced, and once again we reckon the folks who compiled the list got it spot on. Beyonce, Girls creator Lena Dunham, Michelle Obama and Kate Middleton all gained rightful spots on the Icons list, with each lady receiving an appraisal from their peers. “The future Queen is dignified, dutiful and unflappable, with a modest reluctance to steal the spotlight from her husband, Prince William,” Sally Bedell Smith, author of Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch, wrote about the Duchess of Cambridge. “Her elegant wardrobe has enormous popular appeal that has boosted the British fashion industry.” We’re thrilled to see Jennifer Lawrence on the Artists list, also joined by the likes of Christina Aguilera and Jenna Lyons. “Sure, this girl can act, but, man, this girl can also just be,” Jodie Foster wrote about Oscar-winning Jennifer Lawrence. “And that’s precisely what’s earned he such a strong fan base. “Her good-humoured, ballsy, free-spirited alter ego with the husky voice and a propensity for junk food … Jen, the spritely tomboy from Kentucky — that Jen’s got it together. A hoot. A gem. A gem with a killer stare.” Click here to check out who gained spots in all the categories, which include Titans, Pioneers, Leaders, Icons and Artists.

Best of 2011: Kate Middleton’s year in style

Whether you love her or loathe her (and we don’t believe you if you do the latter), 2011 owes itself solely to one woman: Kate Middleton. Though her style remains distinctly average in our book (string us up and hang us for treason), there’s no denying the effect the Duchess of Cambridge has had on the world. And, since everything she wears sells out in seconds, the fashion brands she favours have got a lot to thank her for. Like everyone else, we’re kind of intrigued with her influence, so we’ve trawled through Kate’s best looks from this year to see her rise from pauper (ha!) to Princess in pictures, which has lead us to the following conclusions: 1) she’s a mega-fan of the high street, 2) she only wears a handful of designers and regurgitates them as necessary, 3) June was a particularly good month. Without further ado, here’s her year in style… January: Reiss Kate wears a Reiss ‘Nanette’ dress for her official engagement photos shot by Mario Testino, and the hysteria begins. April: Alexander McQueen Just another white dress. We’re kidding! Kate gets married in a jaw-dropping Alexander McQueen dress designed by Sarah Burton and the world stops in its tracks. April: Zara The new Duchess of Cambridge steps out the day after her wedding in another high street dress, this time from Zara. The world applauds her for remaining the peoples’ Princess despite being an official royal. May: Reiss Kate meets Michelle Obama for the first time; everyone gets excited about the pair’s fashion politics. Kate opts for another Reiss dress, nude in colour with a boxy neckline and panelled waistband. June: Jenny Packham Her first charity gala since getting married and Kate opts for a glistening champagne-pink gown by Jenny Packham, which skims the floor […]

In memory of McQueen: one year on

It’s hard to believe today marks a year since Alexander McQueen’s tragic death. Fashion’s been mourning the loss of the late, great designer ever since he passed away on February 11th 2010 – and even though Sarah Burton’s continuing Lee’s legacy through his eponymous label, there’s still a gaping hole left in the industry. A genius of our generation, McQueen’s avant garde and often daring designs pushed boundaries, challenged traditions and transcended fashion into a spectacular art form. From his debut Central Saint Martins postgraduate collection in 1992 to his final collection, shown at a private presentation in Paris without him in 2010, the British enfant terrible, as he was often referred, expanded our understanding of fashion towards a conceptual commentary on contemporary culture. And so, on the first anniversary of his death – and as the fashion world commemorates the official Alexander McQueen day on Twitter – we’re paying tribute to the incredible designer, celebrating his unrivalled work, and spotlighting the celebs who’ve worn it. Sarah Jessica Parker Sarah Jessica Parker in a tartan McQueen dress at 2006’s Costume Institute Gala; wearing a McQueen tuxedo jacket to the designer’s memorial at St Paul’s Cathedral in September 2010; and wearing a floor-length floral gown two months before to the 2010 CFDA Awards. Daphne Guinness Muse to McQueen Daphne Guinness wears sea-inspired dress and those infamous 12-inch Armadillo shoes from Alexander’s SS10 collection to Nars’ 15×15 project in November 2009. Naomi Campbell Naomi Campbell models a McQueen dress from his SS10 collection at her charity Fashion For Relief catwalk show in February 2010; just days later, she wears another dress from the same collection to the 2010 Elle Style Awards; and in December last year, wearing a McQueen dress by Sarah Burton to the British Fashion Awards 2010. The Create by Jason Wu digital camera

Known for his luxurious and youthful designs, Jason Wu is one of the hottest names in fashion. Having dressed Michelle Obama for her cover in vogue as well as the all-important Inaugural Ball, Wu has recently been launched into style stardom. However, not content with being the go-to designer for America’s first lady, Wu has drawn his attention to other areas of design: this time involving technology. The relationship between fashion and technology is becoming increasingly apparent. We continue to witness the introduction of mobile applications from fashion houses and retailers; are bombarded with a huge choice of stylish accessories for all our gadgets and progressively see fashion insiders understanding and using social networking as a means of communication with today’s online culture. Wu however, has taken the idea of fashion and technology to another level by designing a gadget himself, in collaboration with General Imaging. Ladies and gents, I introduce to you the new digital camera: Create by Jason Wu. Launched as a way of merging style and simplicity within the world of compact digital cameras, the Create by Jason Wu is a sophisticated and advanced model that boasts a sleek aesthetic as well as an easy-to-navigate menu. Fully-integrated with a retractable USB and in-built software that makes charging and transferring photos to your computer fuss-free, this wires/memory card/battery-free compact has truly been created with the user in mind. Of equal importance to the camera’s technological abilities is, of course, how it looks. Wu has captured the elegance of his collections by incorporating different textures – including a luxurious leather front panel – and has succeeded in creating a timelessly chic yet simple-to-use gadget for fashionistas on-the-go. The Create by Jason Wu digital camera is set to hit shelves at the end of this month and will be available […]

Fashion gets political

Perhaps it’s the Michelle Obama effect, perhaps it is a fabulously well-played campaign or maybe it is a love of fashion, that has pushed the Prime Minister’s wife Sarah Brown to stand up for UK fashion. The PM’s wife paid a visit to our fabulous London Fashion Week; she even had time to stop off at Stephen Jones’ very exclusive party. Where she mingled with the likes of Erin O’Connor, the man himself and everyone from Giles Deacon to Anna Piaggi. But when she wasn’t parting the night away she was on her very own fashion campaign. She has called on the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, and the Royal Family to help LFW. It isn’t as widely acknowledged as Milan, Paris and New York, and tends to be overlooked. She is asking our leaders; to help us fashionistas put our home on the fashion map once and for all. Speaking about her commitment to the BFC during its 25th Birthday, Sarah explained: “The Mayor, the Palace-we should all work together to keep London Fashion Week as big and bright as we can. It’s in all our interests. She really is doing her best to get involved, not only attending the party, but also trekking around the exhibition, and watching the Vivienne Westwood show. It’s a positive step forward for British fashion. [Image, Source]

The must have item: Aretha Franklin’s hat

You might have thought Michelle Obama was the belle of the ball, or that Rhianna and Beyonce stole the show in their delicious gowns, or even that it was the little Obama’s looking cute as buttons that the public would want to copy. But oh no, it would seem the woman to cause the most hype was Aretha Franklin. The iconic singer performed at the Inauguration ceremony wearing an outfit of tonal greys and pearl earrings. But it was her statement hat that has been causing quite a fashion stir. The felt cloche hat with a large bow encrusted with Swarovski crystals has led to a massive demand for copies. The hat was made by Luke Song, who custom-made the design especially for Aretha. Based in Detroit, Song has been making hats for Aretha for the last 20 years. But since the ceremony, Song has received floods of requests for the same hat. Unfortunately the hat was solely made for Aretha, however Song has decided to create an alternate hat with ribbon detailing. This version costs $179 (£129). Customers have apparently been snapping up the consumer friendly version. Who can really resist a crystal encrusted bow? [images]
