The Spring/Summer 2020 Fashion Trends We’ll Be Wearing

Yes, we’ve had an onslaught of storms. Yes, the rainfall seems like it’s never-ending. And yes, it’s bitterly cold…BUT, we’ve spied some daffodils starting to bloom. Which is one of the best telltale signs that spring is on its way. And while Fashion Week is in full swing and providing us with inspiration for autumn/winter 2020, naturally we’re still in the process of planning our wardrobes for spring.  So what can we expect for the new season ahead? Well, we have the usual floral prints to contend with. Obvious, but worth mentioning anyway. And thanks to designers including Balmain, Maison Margiela, and Dries Van Noten, polka dots are going to be everywhere, along with feminine tailoring, embroidery designs, exaggerated collars, bucket hats, and crochet to name a few.  Now, while there are some trends we’ll be steering clear of because let’s face it, we’re not supermodels and can’t pull off everything. Sigh. There are certain trends that we wouldn’t forgive ourselves for not trying. Ahead, we highlight the spring trends we’ll be wearing along with must-have pieces to complete the look.  WAISTCOATS  You’d be forgiven if every time you pictured a waistcoat you immediately thought of Kate Moss circa mid-2000s, in her famous signature shorts and knee-high boots. And while designers such as Anthony Vaccarello did send models down the catwalk in gorgeous tiny waistcoats, thankfully other versions of the waistcoat included a more grown-up, looser style as seen specifically at Armani and Hermes.  We11done wool-blend blazer available at Net-A-Porter  Double-breasted gilet available at Mango NEON 80’s trends always make a comeback every season in some shape or form. This spring/summer it’s back in full force in the way of fluorescent hues.  Vibrant, attention-grabbing, and fun, whether it’s a flirty lime green dress as seen at Valentino or head-to-toe electric […]

Our 10 Best Dressed At The Oscars 2019

And so the night we’ve been waiting for finally arrived. Held at the Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre and without a host, the 91st Academy Awards took place yesterday. Olivia Colman stole our hearts with her acceptance speech. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper nearly brought us to tears with their performance of Shallow, while Bohemian Rhapsody took home the most awards with Black Panther, Roma and Green Book coming a close second. But as always, it was the red carpet dresses that had people talking. Who was wearing what, who looked good in what, and whom should have sacked their stylists on the spot. While we have a few thoughts about the latter, here we’re giving a rundown on which celeb outfits we loved. Hollywood glam at its finest, Amy Adams looked amazing in custom Versace Letitia Wright kept it simple and sophisticated in Dior haute couture Ashley Graham accentuated her show-stopping figure in Zac Posen Constance Wu turned heads in a canary yellow Versace gown Emilia Clarke looked gorgeous in custom Balmain Jennifer Hudson was stunning in an Elie Saab one shouldered dress Jennifer Lopez shone in a metallic turtleneck Tom Ford fitted dress. Up Your Denim Game! How To Buy The Perfect Pair Of Jeans

A great pair of jeans might not be the first item of clothing on your priority list at the moment, as we imagine they fall behind winter coats, chunky knit jumpers, and general festival attire. But, we don’t think you should ever stop looking for that perfect pair. A lot of us ladies avoid certain denim trends for fear of investing in an un-flattering pair which can put us off the idea of on-trend jeans forever. But not today. Today we are here to help with our tip top jean-buying bits of advice. You too can be the girl who throws on a pair of stylish jeans and killer heels for a night out and looks just as good as the woman with the skin tight red dress, or the girl who feels just as casual in a pair of jeans as she does in her pyjama bottoms. Here goes: Length is everything Even if you don’t shop specifically for your waist size and leg length, a lot of popular high street stores sell jeans for petites and tall girls, as well as ladies of an average height, so you’re more likely to find a length that fits you. There’s nothing worse than ankle swingers when you were going for flares! Shop for your body Research your body type as there are certain styles which fit hourglass, pear and apple shapes for example, so knowing which ones to rule out or make a bee-line for will save you lots of time in a busy shop. Try everything on.  Try on every single style of jeans from various different suppliers? That way you will not only know what jeans suit you and your body, but you will be familiar with the sizing of different retailers. Often you may find that you […]

We Spy With Our Little Eye A Spot Of Gothic Glamour…

You’d think as we’re finally well  into spring, celebs would break out the floral prints and bright hues. But nope. Instead, their doing “all black errthang” in the form of gothic glamour. From airport-chic to the red carpet, outfits are tough, sexy and bold. Case in point, Kourtney Kardashian gave us major life at LAX earlier in the week in leather leggings paired with a biker jacket and bandanna choker. Also getting in on the choker action, was Alice Eve at the Criminal premiere in NYC, as she poised perfectly in a black stretch-cady Michael Kors gown, while model Bella Hadid showed off her pins in a figure hugging Versace LBD at the International Center of Photography’s 2016 Infinity Awards. At the MTV Movie Awards lots of our favourite starlets glamorously channelled the trend, namely Kendall Jenner who gave her legs extra mileage in a pair of super hot Dsquared 2 Riri sandals while the effortlessly cool Cara Delevigne took to the red carpet in a sheer cut-out panelled Balmain jumpsuit and Jimmy Choo stilettos. Oh…and let’s not forget our dear Alexa (who’s always ahead of the game). The T.V presenter was the epitome of gothic glamour at this years BRIT Awards in a strapless velvet midi dress teamed with killer heels. Want in on the action? Here’s a selection of glam goth approved pieces…

5 of our favourite key Autumn 2014 trends

If the end of another summer is leaving you blue, then take a look at the upcoming fashion trends for autumn 2014 and pick yourself up with some seasonal retail therapy. Oversized Scarves: No autumn/winter wardrobe is complete without a scarf and this year, it’s all about oversized wraps and wearable blankets. Bright and bold patterns in woollen knits and lightweight, romantic silks graced the catwalks of Burberry Prorsum, Vivienne Westwood and Issa this year. But if you’re looking for something a little more sedate that’s suitable for day-to-day wear then Winser London offer two elegant, oversized yet manageable scarves that are perfect for softening the structured lines of a trouser suit – another of this season’s key trends – or layering up over dresses and casual weekend clothes. 1960’s Throwback: Every year the world’s leading designers pay homage to a bygone era and this season, those classic asymmetric shapes, bold prints and short hemlines of the 1960’s were favoured in the Valentino, Gucci and Luis Vuitton collections. To give your wardrobe a classic nod to the 1960’s, pair cropped trousers, denims or an A-line skirt with a polo-neck jumper. Once again, Winser London have got this trend spot on with a selection of polo-necks in five warm, autumnal colours that flatter any skin tone and which are ideal for professional or cosy, casual wear. Embroidery and Embellishment If you’re looking for a show-stopping dress for an event this autumn, then delicate materials in rich tones that are beautifully embellished or embroidered are where it’s at. Oscar de la Renta, Alberta Ferretti, Valentino and Roberto Cavalli all included sensational, sheer and embroidered gowns in their autumn 2014 catwalk collections. Although many high-street retailers will be adopting this trend, Winser London have applied beautiful embroidery to a delicately tailored dress for […]

Naomi Campbell and Keira Knightley among Interview’s September cover stars!

We thought we had seen all of this year’s coveted September issues when Anna Wintour finally debuted the highly anticipated American Vogue cover earlier this week, but it looks like we forgot one. The Interview September issue – and it’s a good’un! Named The Photographer’s Issue, Interview’s September offering asked six leading photographers to choose anyone they wanted to pose for their own individual cover; and the results are pretty incredible! Patrick Demarchelier picked the ever-photogenic English rose that is Keira Knightley, who can be seen posing in a stunning Donna Karan ensemble with minimal make-up and the quite-hard-to-pull-off wet look hairstyle. Keira managed it though – that goes without saying but the proof is in the pic above! Photography’s dynamic duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott chose one of the most powerful supermodels in the world for their cover… a Balmain-clad Naomi Campbell! Well played, guys! Other cover stars include Nicole Kidman, who was shot by Steven Klein, and American actress and model Amber Valletta, who was photographed by Craig McDean. Peter Lindbergh chose to shoot French actress Lea Seydoux for his cover, and last but not least, Ukrainian Canadian model Daria Werbowy’s cover was shot by Mikael Jansson. So much talent in one magazine! Don’t forget to get your copy to see more pics, interviews and fabulous fashion features.

MTV Movie Awards 2014: The best dressed!

Music and movie stars alike gathered in the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles last night, ready to take in the 2014 MTV Movie Awards action! The red carpet was a real mixed bag in terms of choice of outfits, as it was filled with both fun and fashionable pieces making for real versatility. Rihanna went sexy in a white Ulyana Sergeenko Couture number with a dangerously thigh high split (and she wasn’t afraid to show the crowd, either!) as did Rita Ora, who went the other way and wore a black Barbara Casasola dress with a provocative, plunging front. Going cute but high fashion were Lupita Nyong’o and Victoria Justice, who looked gorgeous in their respective Chanel and Atelier Versace dresses, while Nicki Minaj kept things surprisingly minimal and effortless in a black Alexander McQueen dress. Jourdan Dunn vs. Anna Dello Russo…Who wore Moschino better?

This week’s dress-off has pulled in two major fashion players, both of whom know how to leave their well-dressed imprints on our style-saturated minds. Upping the glam factor during Fashion Month, as per usual, was Anna Dello Russo – the high priestess of unabashed, high end fashion that says nothing of a tamed approach to dressing in the morning. Sporting autumn/winter ‘14’s biggest parody of fast fashion – the ‘Over 20 Billion Served’ McDonald’s sweatshirt, masterminded by Jeremy Scott at Moschino – during Milan Fashion Week, ADR gave us (and the flurry of street style photogs) pure, unadulterated viewing pleasure. Wearing it as a dress, she accessorised with a matching quilted bag, featuring the symbolic Golden Arches; a woollen scarf and lace-up booties. The matching phone cover certifies this look as Dello Russo down to a T. But, putting a slightly more pared back spin on this brash runway number was Brit babe Jourdan Dunn, who opted to take a much more NYC approach with her styling. Tempering the loudness of the sweat with all-black staples; a leather mini skirt, shearling coat, trusty tote and Balenciaga cut-out boots completed the look. Perfect. So, who deserves to be crowned the sartorial queen in this war of wonderful wares? Given there’s a world of difference between the styles of these two fashion queens; we’re sticking with our slick style guns on this and awarding Jourdan the accolade. Anna’s power dressing prowess never fails to excite, but Jourdan’s effortless ease makes her look a lot more wearable. You go, girl. [Images: Jourdan; Anna]

Rihanna is Worst Dressed of the Week in Prada

After fashion killin’ it (‘scuse the pun) on the Balmain and Chanel front row, Rihanna took a, well, turn for the worse at the Miu Miu autumn/winter 2014 show earlier this week. Debuting a car crash of a look from the Prada autumn/winter 2014 collection, the far-from-bashful Barbadian paired this rather outré chill-blocker with a deep-cut, chevron-print sweater and thigh-high black stockings. As always, RiRi wasn’t short of an award-winning repertoire of accessories, pairing the look with black sunglasses, a statement ear cuff, purple neck scarf and a deep red lip. Black ankle-strap sandals and a healthy dose of the Take Care singer’s famed air-of-don’t-care rounded of yet another naturally eccentric front row look. But even a round-up of fitting accoutrements couldn’t save this look; there’s just too much going on here – even by Rihanna’s standards! So far this season, what have you made of Rihanna’s frenzied show appearances? Given her star is far from small, and top designers dress her all the time, is her attendance, or rather, lack of punctuality, at shows too much of a distraction? Has to be said, though: fashion month wouldn’t be half as much fun without the Only Girl In The World who’d dare to flash an ample amount of boobage, strategically covered with a fur snood. Trend alert: Grunge!

If you paid attention to some of the biggest spring/summer 2014 catwalk shows, then you’ll already know that grunge is making a huge comeback for the new season. Hedi Slimane was all about grunge and rock ‘n’ roll for the Saint Laurent spring/summer 2014 show, and Marc Jacobs also went dark and alternative for his final Louis Vuitton collection. (A great way to bow out, don’t you think?) So, with two of the biggest fashion players championing the trend, we have every reason to get behind it too! We’ve already seen the celebs try their hand at the grunge trend by incorporating certain aspects into their red carpet outfits and as they go about their everyday lives, and now you can get in on the trend too with these very basic items. 1. Our top pick for going grunge is a leather jacket. Nothing says attitude better than a fierce bit of leather draped across your shoulders, and this Christopher Kane jacket is the perfect hue to wear over the rest of your black clothes and accessories. Christopher Kane cracked leather biker jacket, £2,490 £871.50 2. Make your eyes stand out by lining them with the darkest and boldest hue of black eyeliner you can find. Yves Saint Laurent black eyeliner, £24 3. A great thing about the grunge trend is being able to wear flats; black leather boots will not only convey attitude, but you’ll be super warm and comfy in the process too. You can be bad-ass without putting your feet through hell, too! Dune Black leather biker boots, £195 4. The more studs and spikes in your accessories, the better! This clutch bag pretty much has it all, doesn’t it? Pierre Balmain studded clutch, £593.91 £386.04 5. A band tee is the final step to completing your […]

Jay Z’s Barneys collaboration raises over $1 million for charity

It looks like Jay Z made the right decision by sticking with his Barneys collaboration, despite the earlier controversy, as he raised over $1 million for his charity, the Shawn Carter Foundation. The range, rather aptly entitled BNY SCC (although it’s a bit of a mouthful to say!) saw Beyonce’s hubby collaborate with some of the hottest names in the fashion industry including Balmain and Lanvin, where he put his stamp on some pricey clothes and accessories. Pieces included a python-brimmed $875 leather sports cap, an NYC NYC logo t-shirt retailing for a more humble $70, and a $2,950 tuxedo jacket co-created with Lanvin. Both Jay Z and Barneys pledged that 100% of the collaboration’s profits and 10% of all Barney’s sales would go to the Shawn Carter Foundation, a charity which will help students in need pay for their university education. With stats like that, are you glad Jay Z stuck it out or do you think he should have pulled out of the collaboration as soon as the racial controversy started? [Telegraph]

“I’ll be the most hated man in fashion” – Alexander Wang’s first thoughts on the Balenciaga job

Alexander Wang’s appointment at Balenciaga has gone down a storm; he even got the Karl Lagerfeld seal of approval, which is proof enough that the fashion world has welcomed him into Nicolas Ghesquière’s role with open arms. However, the New York based designer has revealed that he very nearly turned it down (in fact he said “no” the very first time François-Henri Pinault asked him!) for fear of backlash from the fashion world. Perish the thought! “My first reaction to was no,” Alexander Wang said. “I told him that I was so preoccupied with what I am doing with my own brand in New York, and I’ll be the most hated man in fashion!” “I felt that fear was driving my decision-making, so I wrote down a list of pros and cons and asked myself, ‘What am I afraid of? The perception of failure? The perception of what people might think?’ I knew that what I wanted completely outweighed all of that.” We bet he’s glad he took the job now! Click here to check out his debut collection for Balenciaga. We can’t imagine a Balenciaga without him now, can you? [Vogue]

Cindy Crawford stuns in Victoria Beckham for Net a Porter’s The Edit

Who’s that covering the latest Net a Porter The Edit issue? Why it’s none other than 47-year-old (yes, 47!) supreme, sexy supermodel Cindy Crawford – and we couldn’t think of a better person to feature on the front of The Body Issue either. The gorgeous super is looking pretty flawless on the cover in a figure-hugging black Victoria Beckham dress, and is also rocking some equally sexy black dresses from the likes of Balmain and Emilio Pucci (among others) in the stunning editorial. Cindy’s interviews are always a good read, and her latest one for The Edit is no exception as she relives tales from her past modelling days and dishes out advice to young hopefuls. “I am very professional, so I think that got me far,” she said. “It’s kind of underrated in the fashion world to be on time, for example. Sometimes I would be annoyed that certain models – we shall not name names – could show up five hours late to a shoot and there was no consequence. “I thought, ‘I am going to take advantage of this moment, do my own thing’. I think some of the young girls saw me as someone who used the business back, not just getting eaten up by it. It’s like women’s rights or everything else – you break the glass ceiling a little each time.” Wise words! So what are Cindy’s goals now that she has achieved so much professionally? “My goal in life is not to be happy all the time,” she confessed. “It’s asking a lot. How would you even know you were happy if you were always happy? I just want to be present so I can experience whatever emotion is there. Sometimes it’s joy, sometimes it’s not joy and I’m fine with that. I […]

Billboard Music Awards 2013: The best dressed!

You didn’t think Cannes was the only place the well-dressed celebs flocked to over the weekend, did you? The red carpet (well, technically blue) was rolled out for the 2013 Billboard Music Awards which took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and the famous attendees certainly showcased their style credentials as they arrived in their finery for the event. Some of our favourite ladies to steal the sartorial show included Miley Cyrus in a gorgeous Balmain jumpsuit, Selena Gomez (who continued to show the world that she has outgrown her Disney Channel princess status by wearing a sexy Atelier Versace gown), her BFF Taylor Swift (who showcased her enviable stems in a piercing blue Zuhair Murad sparkly mini dress) and Jennifer Lopez (who showed the newbies how it’s really done in plunging gold Zuhair Murad). Chloe Moretz also wowed the crowd in a Fendi spring/summer 2013 dress and poker straight, sleek locks, while Kelly Rowland lent some support to designer Rami Al Ali by stepping out in a fabulous couture gown. Take a look at some of our favourite looks from the 2013 Billboard Music Awards below and tell us who gets your best-dressed vote… Miley Cyrus in Balmain Taylor Swift in Zuhair Murad Selena Gomez in Atelier Versace Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad Chloe Moretz in Fendi Emmy Rossum in Zuhair Murad Kelly Rowland in Rami Al Ali Couture Hayden Panettiere in Halston Heritage Ke$ha in Givenchy Shania Twain in Pavoni by Mikael D [poll id=”399″]

Zoe Saldana is InStyle UK’s June cover girl

This is exactly what we like to see for a fashion glossy June cover – thank you InStyle UK! Zoe Saldana has indeed been chosen to front the June issue of InStyle UK, as photographed by Damon Heath, and can be seen rocking designer pieces from the likes of Dior, Prada and Louis Vuitton on the respective cover and editorial images. The Star Trek Into Darkness actress looks pretty sensational in the pics, but she opened up to the mag about Hollywood’s obsession with eternal youth, which we thought was one of the highlights of her interview… “Women are reminded of their age all the time and it’s usually by a fricking fat, big-bellied old man with a comb-over and you look at him and you’re like, ‘really? Give me a break. You just have more money and more power in this situation than I do, but not in my life.’ “I’m tired of watching these 50-year-old actors with these 23-year-old actresses and they’re soulmates in the movie. What? In real life a 23-year-old would look at a 50-year-old and go, ‘Are you kidding me?!’” Wow, you tell ‘em, girl! We’ll definitely be picking up the June issue of InStyle to what other fierce things Zoe comes out with! [Sassi Sam]

2013 Met Gala dresses available to buy the very next day?!

Moda Operandi is famed for providing us with hot-off-the-runway pieces months before they land in any other store, but it’s now going one step further by vowing to make this year’s Met Gala outfits available to buy the very next day. Can we get a woop woop? So how is all of this going to be possible? Well it might have something to do with the fact that the 2013 Met Gala is sponsored by Moda Operandi, as well as the fact that the schlebs have been planning their outfits for the big night months in advance. Hopefully no Anne Hathaway style last-minute changes will happen to throw a spanner in the works! “Events like the Met Gala offer some of the most spectacular fashion moments because they inspire experimentation,” said Moda Operandi co-founder Lauren Santo Domingo.”We are thrilled to be able to provide women with access to the fashions from one the world’s most thrilling red carpet events.” We already know that dresses from the likes of Balmain, Anthony Vacarello, Rodarte, Nina Ricci and Wes Gordon will all be up for grabs; now all we have to find out is which famous face will be stepping onto the red carpet in the aforementioned designers. Let the guessing game commence… [Huffington Post]

Where was Hedi headed?

Well, what a week it’s been at Paris Fashion Week, and, although Wang’s debut at Balenciaga was rolling off the tip of everyone’s tongue, it was Hedi Silmane’s second collection since taking the helm at Yves Saint Laurent that got fashion gossip stirring. So, what did you make of Slimane’s second design offering for the Parisian fashion powerhouse? Shunning the legendary French chic the brand has built its identity upon, Slimane went down the route he knows best: grunge, and unapologetically Californicated at that. Critics haven’t been too kind either, slamming the autumn/winter collection shown in Paris on Monday for straying too far from what has come to be expected of the iconic brand. But all wasn’t lost to negative review. Courtney Love tweeted her affection for the collection, dubbing it ‘rich ladies buying what we used to wear’. But that shouldn’t come as surprise  given Love’s naturally grungy aesthetic, along with front rowers Alison Mosshart and Sky Ferreira, who similarly didn’t have much to complain about. Notably, Jess Cartner-Morley of The Guardian described the appearance of grunge on Parisian runway space, where sophistication reigns supreme and straying from the highbrow approach to dressing is by no means considered the norm, as ‘an abstract concept’. This asks the question, then, whether Hedi’s departure from the accepted ways of the Parisian fashion set was a deliberate act to assert his arrival at the house. But he could’ve done that in his debut collection, right? Unsurprisingly, assertion has been a key theme this season; Simons asserted his famed sensitivity at Dior, Wang, by injecting the wearability at Balenciaga, and, of course now, Hedi. I can’t help but mention here, that Tom Ford’s excitably eclectic autumn/winter ’13 collection had that two-finger attitude witnessed at Saint Laurent, or, as I like to call it, the […]

The Brit Awards 2013: The best dressed!

There’s nothing quite like a good British award ceremony to warm us up for the prestigious Oscars that are taking place this Sunday! (Write it in your diaries and stock up on the coffee and popcorn – it’s going to be a long night and we want you to spend it with us!) Anyway last night wasn’t about the Oscars, it was about the one and only Brit Awards which made us very proud to hail from this fine nation! Musicians, actresses and generally all sorts of hot and glamorous stars from across the globe turned up to London’s O2 Arena for the 2013 Brit Awards, and predictably there were quite a few sartorial red carpet choices that set tongues wagging and pulses racing. Always a MFL favourite, Taylor Swift stunned the crowd in a jaw-dropping sexy black Elie Saab number, while Bond Girl Berenice Marlohe had a license to thrill in a wow-worthy gold Donna Karan Atelier dress. It’s a good job Jessie J wasn’t at the Grammy Awards, because the ultra-revealing Versace dress she chose would have violated every inch of the conservative dress code. Nice to see her making the most of her long, raven looks before she goes for the chop in aid of Red Nose Day. Good for you, Jess! Also representing British talent was model Jourdan Dunn in a sexy mini Balmain dress, and Paloma Faith who sparkled in Dolce and Gabbana. Always one for giving us an attention-grabbing outfit is our Paloma, and boy do we love her for it! Take a look at the list of our best-dressed gals from the evening. Who gets your vote? 10 of the best trends of 2012

We can’t believe 2012 is drawing to a close so fast, and with festive prep in full blast, we’ve taken out a little time to help you reflect on the trends that defined the runways of 2012. From ornate embellishment to luxe leather; gym gear gone glam to shirtless collars – 2012 brought several lasting pieces and styles to our wardrobes. To refresh your memory, as next season creeps upon the ever-moving world of fashion, here’s to a trip down trend memory lane to refresh your fashion mindset, and cleanse the mental palate to make way for next season’s stunning wares. Sports luxe: Olympic fever gripped the globe this year, and with so much fitness apparel, fine abs and Tom Daley in full view, designers couldn’t help but take gym gear up a few chic notches; off the treadmill and straight onto the runway(with a few modifications, obvs). Embellishment: The SS’12 shows marked the beginning of our obsession with festooning everything from cardis to clutches and slippers to socks. Even for a/w’12, Lanvin and Balmain delivered heavy smatterings of crystals and beading to their fashionable wares, whilst Christopher Kane’s embellished clutches and jeans became summer staples. We approved. Collars: Dismantling the shirt, a firm wardrobe staple, left us with a collar and free reign to do anything to it! What started out as a pretty and prim game of peek-a-boo atop cosy knits Alexa (yes, she) wore with dresses and shirts underneath became a full-blown global phenomenon. Encrusted with stones; crisp white; metallic; printed or Peter Pan versions, the collar did pretty well at pushing the statement necklace of its pedestal. Candy shades: Probably the biggest summer trend to slip into our wardrobes, pastel shades were everywhere! We blame the house of Louis Vuitton for getting us unhealthily hooked on shades of […]

Style Awards: Top 10 best dressed celebs of 2012

It’s safe to say, 2012 has been a positively chaotic year on many accounts: stealthy fashion musical chairs; the news of a 2013 royal tot, surprise (read: secret) weddings and a fair amount of heartbreak ensued. But one thing far more exciting than all of these juicy prospects combined is the FASHION we witnessed. From Miranda Kerr’s uber-stylish taxi-to-hotel hop, all endless, perfectly bronzed legs and the hottest off-duty ensembles imaginable, to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s ravishing red carpet looks, not forgetting some equally hot lingerie! Diane Kruger left us in a state of fash-induced hyperventilation, thanks to that Christian Dior couture gown whilst Emma Stone really established herself as the unturned stone (excuse the sorrowful pun) of fashion: she.looked.HOT. From Tom Ford to Trapstar, Rihanna has us on trend-led tenterhooks with every outfit she stepped out in, and Alexa, well, she’s just too stylish to even discuss, right? It was the probably the hardest thing we had to do – alongside trying to remember to use Saint Laurent instead of Yves Saint Laurent, and digesting news of R-Patz and  K-Stew’s brief split whilst admiring her red carpet looks – but choosing our 10 best dressed celebs of 2012 was a limiting task. After much thought, picking and choosing, editing and loudly conversing (read: arguing) over frills, hems and necklines, we’ve whittled it down to our Top 10. Here’s to 2012’s best dressed ladies…. Taylor Swift Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Rihanna Miranda Kerr Kristen Stewart Emma Stone Diane Kruger Blake Lively Anne Hathaway Alexa Chung Who was your best dressed of 2012?

The American Music Awards 2012: The best dressed

The EMAs may have just been and gone, but it was time for another celebration of all things musical last night, as the 40th Annual American Music Awards took place at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. As predicted, the red carpet was full of beautifully-dressed stars not just from the music biz but from all walks of celebrity life. As well as the big musicians such as Gwen Stefani and Taylor Swift, the red carpet was also graced by the likes of top supermodel Heidi Klum and George Clooney’s gorgeous (and very lucky) girlfriend Stacy Keibler, amongst others. Although there was no dress code and obvious theme, the attendees kept things young, fun and flirty, with a definite nod to the upcoming festive season given all the sparkle! It was all quite understated, chic and beautiful, as even the likes of Nicki Minaj and Christina Aguilera swapped their loud, eccentric outfits for more conventional ones – and as a result, looked gorgeous in their respective gowns. (Yes, we know Nicki’s dress is a very bright yellow and doesn’t fit everyone’s definition of the word “understated”, but we definitely think she toned it down since she didn’t arrive towing her very own Pope…) Here’s a list of our best-dressed celebs from the event. Vote for your fave in the poll below! Carrie Underwood in Abed Mahfouz Taylor Swift in Zuhair Murad Gwen Stefani in Balmain Ginnifer Goodwin in Oscar de la Renta Heidi Klum in Alexandre Vauthier Kelly Rowland in Naeem Khan Stacy Keibler in Collette Dinnigan Christina Aguilera in Pamella Roland Carly Rae Jepsen in Gomez Gracia  Nicki Minaj in Monique Lhuillier [poll id=”379″]

Is the ‘copycat’ style of Zara turning us into impulse buyers?

We’re all partial to a pit stop at High Street favourite, Zara, where the most price-concerned of trend scavengers hunters can satiate their thirst for a leather peplum on the cheap. Yes, we’re all guilty of it, but who can blame us? Chanel’s LBJ will set you back £1,500 or so; its high street version at Zara, a mere £60. A Valentino’s studded leather tote means shelling £1,695 on a dead animal, but Zara will have you parting with £89.99 and leave your conscience partly intact. If these price drops are frighteningly exciting, in a twisted sort of way, then imagine how smug the Spanish brand’s famously camera shy overlord, Amancio Ortega Gaona, the world’s 3rd richest man must be with his hypnotising concoction of well presented trend-led pieces at fractional prices, and fast. And so was born ‘fast fashion’: a term greatly reviled by the fashion elite. A recent article in The New York Times Magazine highlighted some very interesting points about the aggressive and somewhat ‘dark’ expansion of the High Street brand, which is part of holding company Inditex, home to brands such as Massimo Dutti, Pull & Bear and Berskha. Don’t get me wrong, I find myself lulled into a false sense of Wangish security every time I walk past the store and spot a runway-fresh inspired piece, but said article raised a rather important question in my mind: is Zara’s rapid, 3-week trend response timeframe turning us into fad-guzzling impulse buyers? Zara’s price points are moderately low, and the aesthetic shockingly (and impressively) high end, but what the High Street trend-zilla, as I like to call it, is doing is making the fashion process far less painful, by taking the seasonal wait out of the equation and giving its customers free reign of the drawing board, creating up what […]

Paris Fashion Week SS13 highlights – Part 2

Time for the likes of Lanvin, Balmain, Rick Owens, Nina Ricci and Roland Mouret to have their turn on the Paris Fashion Week spring/summer 2013 catwalks now. Some designers stuck to what they know while others went for quite a big image overhaul. We think we’ve reached that stage where we can recognise a Balmain dress when we see one, and it looks like that’s still the case with this season too. Akin to those Herve Leger bandage dresses, the Balmain dress has become an instantly recognisable celeb wardrobe staple, and we actually look forward to seeing the slightly revamp on it season after season. It’s not a case of asking which celeb will be wearing the dresses but rather which ones won’t!; and we can totally see current-girl-crush Gwen Stefani in those harlequin print jumpsuits, can’t you? Nina Ricci gave us signature, classic romanticism with a bit of a gothic twist this season… and it looks like that good old Fifty Shades of Grey influence is apparent in yet another collection as out came the dominatrix-inspired bondage pieces! We always look forward to a Rick Owens collection, and this one was no different. Described by the designer himself as “a little bit hallucinogenic”, the spring/summer 2013 outing featured shiny, intense and almost godlike pieces, with lots of structure and definition to boot. Mad props to the hair department, too! And then there was Lanvin; Alber Elbaz went for a slight change in direction for this season, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. We just don’t think the man can put a foot wrong, as he presented yet another flawless collection comprised of loud, statement pieces with a relatively more subtle and refined angle than previous outings. We love the purple dress Karlie Kloss is rocking, but do we […]

How to rock the baroque trend on a budget!

“Moderation is a fatal thing. Nothing succeeds like excess.” said Oscar Wilde, and it seems designers took their cue from the legend when setting the agenda for autumn/winter 2012. Collections steeped in fashion history harking back to the 17th century baroque period made for gilded-edges and ornate detailing to make their way onto our lust lists. Think thick gold embroidery, large chandelier earrings that seem almost too heavy to wear; ornate head pieces, frilled edges and a Milanese sensibility when putting these together (think what would Dello Russo do?). Tapestry-inspired accessories made headlines for fall, thanks to the scene-stealing Dolce boys, whilst brocade floral suits took over at Marni and Faberge egg-style embroidery found its way onto velvet pants at Balmain. You’d be forgiven for thinking that such (great) excess must come with an excessive price tag. Well, yes, that is permanently the case with Balmain’s sell-a-limb-for wares (£20,300 for a metal and crystal embroidered wool top, anyone?), but baroque can be rocked on a budget, too. Check out our top baroque picks and boldly rock the budget Balmain to your heart’s content! Rare Sequin Peplum Dress (pictured above), £80 available at Rare Fashion

6 celebrity style icons worthy of their own clothing label

There is a long list of contemporary stylish ladies who are equally as eye catching as the Hepburn’s, Kelly’s and Monroe’s of yesteryear. These ladies have an ‘until death do us part’ kinda relationship with fashion, and their extensive wardrobes, impeccable taste and dedication to looking stylish knows no bounds. So to celebrate the women at the fore of fashionable happenings and their enviable sense of style, we’ve decided to chart our top 6 style icons… Rihanna We think RiRi’s sartorial reputation precedes her. Yes, she has a penchant for expletive-laden footwear (cue: X Factor performance in those trainers), wearing clothes emblazoned with illegal substances and often pushes the limits of fashion to an unimaginable edge, but she never fails to carry off her eccentric wardrobe. High Street, high fashion our outrageously high heels worn with leather shorts; she really is the only girl in the world who can execute it with perfection! Fave 2012 fashion moment: In Givenchy Haute Couture at the 2012 BRIT Awards, Olivia Palermo Gracing front row at headline-hitting fashion shows; girlfriend to a HOT model and the owner of a wardrobe over spilling with sartorial perfection, Olivia Palermo is a no-brainer on our Style Icons list! The flawless beauty, who fronts the cover of the Instyle UK October issue, revealed she likes ‘walking out of the house feeling fully pulled together.’ Something she sure has down to a t! The queen of nonchalant off-duty dressing (she even makes dog walking look stylish!), Olivia is often spotted in impeccable style staples, including a well cut jacket, a statement (not ‘It’) bag and wow-inducing heels. Olivia’s timeless style is easy to translate, and appeals to a wider population – a large chunk of which definitely likes to look fashionably ‘pulled together’. Barneys teams up with Disney for its festive “Electric Holiday” campaign

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again… we love it when Disney meets fashion! Not only do we have a London Fashion Week full of Minnie Mouse outfits to look forward to next month, but across the pond, Barneys is getting its Disney on too! Barneys has officially teamed up with The Walt Disney Company for the store’s highly anticipated Christmas campaign – last year it had Lady Gaga, remember? – entitled “Electric Holiday”, and will be unveiled on November 14th at the Madison Avenue flagship store. A short film consisting of some of the most iconic Disney characters walking the runway in some of the hottest designer pieces will be displayed in the windows. “When we got to the moment when all Disney characters walk on the runway, there was a discussion,” said Barneys New York creative director Dennis Freedman. “The standard Minnie Mouse will not look so good in a Lanvin dress. There was a real moment of silence, because these characters don’t change. I said, ‘If we’re going to make this work, we have to have a 5-foot-11 Minnie,’ and they agreed. When you see Goofy, Minnie and Mickey, they are runway models.” Wow. Talk about excited! What do you think of Minnie Mouse in Lanvin, Daisy Duck in Dolce and Gabbana and Goofy in Balmain? [WWD]

Five minutes with Julien Macdonald

To coincide with our exclusive preview of the Debenhams Life Made Fabulous TV commercial that we showed you earlier today, we thought it might be a nice idea to grab five cheeky minutes with one of the main stars of the campaign… the one and only Mr Julien Macdonald. Julien chatted to us about why he got involved with the Life Made Fabulous campaign, as well as his own personal style, what trends he thinks we should be all over for the autumn/winter season, and even what to look forward to in the current and very addictive series of Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model.  This is the third time you’ve been involved in the Debenhams Life Made Fabulous campaign, but what made you want to do it initially? I think that everybody has a dream of how designers are and it’s very rare that the public actually gets to see them in their working environment so it just brings back the message about the whole velocity and why I work with Debenhams. See, fashion can be fabulous and fashion can be affordable to everybody and it doesn’t matter who you are and where you come from. It proves to everybody that you’re behind the product, and you do design the clothes and you are there and you are involved with the brand. So each designer selected a hero piece to showcase in the advert and you chose a gorgeous little lace dress from the Star by Julien Macdonald range… what made you pick that over the others? Well I wanted to pick one of the pieces which I felt depicted the Star by Julien Macdonald woman and it’s a dress I can see all my fans wearing, so I just wanted one that empowered women and made women look […]

The Ultimate Trouser Edit

Trousers are in. So says fall 2012, and so say we – or so says our Ultimate Trouser Edit! The fall runways brought us the humble trouser in many guises: metallic, lamé, printed, wide-leg, cropped, tailored, cigarette…the list is endless. From ugly-pretty print combinations worked into form fitting trouser suits at Prada to leg swallowing wide-leg versions at Proenza Schouler, and the decorative trouser knew no bounds, thanks to the super-sexy, embellished cropped trouser bought to us courtesy of Balmain. However you decide to edit your fall wardrobe, ensure your new season collection includes the trouser and don’t just opt for one type of cut or colour. Like the runways, experiment with print and invest in various textures and embroidered versions to take your trouser out of the office and into cool territory. Even though we do love our minis and maxis we will definitely be clocking up a healthy-looking trouser wardrobe to ensure fall is a fabulous (and chill-free) one. ‘The Fun Print Trouser’: Polka Dot Silk & Wool Trousers by Sonia By Sonia Rykiel, £275 ‘The Chic Crop’: Black Queen Gaberdine Stretch Slim Cropped Trousers by Joseph, £175 ‘The Metallic Trouser’: Cortensa Shimmering Surface Gold Lame Trousers by By Malene Birger, £225 ‘The Lace Capri’: Lace Capri Trousers by Moschino Cheap & Chic, £350 ‘The Skinny Tuxedo Trouser’: Black Skinny Tuxedo Trousers by Tibi, £191 ‘The Bright Trouser’: Orange Kong Cropped Trousers by Joseph, £177 ‘The Printed Cigarette Pant’: Leopard Woven Cigarette Pant by 3.1 Phillip Lim, £156 ‘The Luxe Wide-leg Trouser’: Silk Georgette Relaxed Pleat Front Trouser by Raoul, £244

Rihanna is white hot and “uncensored” for Harper’s Bazaar August

We’re used to seeing the racier side of Rihanna these days, so it was a very welcome change to see her looking angelic and innocent on the cover of the Harper’s Bazaar US August issue. The Barbadian singer is posing in some of the sleekest new season pieces in the editorial too, from the likes of Emporio Armani (naturally), Balmain, Alexander Wang and Tom Ford. This definitely has to be one of our favourite Rihanna magazine photoshoots we’ve seen in years. We love her glowing bronzed skin, raven locks and barely there make-up; we think photographer Camilla Akrans, stylist Mel Ottenberg and make-up artist Mylam Morales worked seamlessly together to really capture Ri-Ri’s innocence. We’re also very intrigued by the “Rihanna uncensored” headline… we thought Rihanna was already as uncensored as they come, so really looking forward to finding out more. [Images]

Rate or Slate Jessica Brown-Findlay, Ciara and Paris Hilton’s style efforts?

This week’s Rate or Slate takes us to the red, or rather blue carpet at the Prometheus film premiere in London, and leads us to the red carpet fashion parade at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards held in LA, last week. Jessica Brown-Findlay made a blue carpet appearance in an edgy Peter Pilotto peter number, complete with what we like to call ‘sensible’ heels and clutch. Ciara opted for a racy, red Balmain mini (very mini!) and sexy sky-high courts, but her glossy, tousled mane is the real winner here! Socialite Paris Hilton, too, turned up to the MTV Music Awards in a metallic, sequined mini, splashed with crystal embellishment at the neck and hemline. A spiked clutch and black patent pumps completed her look. It’s over to the Style Jury to dissect… Fashion News Ed says: Jessica Brown-Findlay: ‘This is my favourite dress, but don’t think it’s hugely flattering on Jessica which is a shame. The styling is perfect though.’ Ciara: ‘I think someone needs to give Ciara a refresher course on the whole “boobs or legs but never both” rule as she seems to have forgotten. I’d have preferred a slightly lower hemline, but the MTV Movie Awards is one of the few places you can get away with the slightly more daring numbers.’ Paris Hilton: This is very Paris! Nothing new or groundbreaking… she’s a pretty blonde girl wearing a pretty black dress at a star-studded event. It’s neither here nor there but I love the contrast of the dress against her skin and hair.’ You say: ‘Ciara – low cut or hight cut, not both’ – @AsTimeGoesBy via Twitter (On Jessica) ‘Great dress, but makes her look like a wide load.’ (On Ciara) ‘Great hair, but low neckline & high hem too slutty.’ (On Paris) ‘Hot!’ […]

Monday Musings: The things rattling our fashion brains on the hardest day of the week

Pierre Balmain can make you look like Emanuelle Alt (YES!) They keep telling us we can resemble the lithe, nonchalant French Vogue editrix if we snap up some Pierre Balmain pieces, from the subtly priced second line for Balmain. Basically, YES! We do want to look like the chicest French woman in the world, who hardly tries but still manages to look a bajillion dollars! Think soft tees, ultra-structured blazers and black skinnies in luxe leather or denim. The only was is Alt. Watch the Pierre Balmain Fall/Winter 2012-13 video here. Marni at H&M extortion We’re still recovering from the beauty of the Marni at H&M collaboration. The collection of exquisite brocades, sequins, sparkle and statement jewellery launched on March 8, and was a far more civil and orderly affair than its predecessors. A wristband system ensured shoppers weren’t crushed to within an inch of their lives (the norm for some fashion lovers) but before we knew it, pieces we’re advertising on eBay for triple the retail price. Vogue.co.uk reported that around 700 pieces have already been listed on eBay from all over the country, selling at majorly hefty prices to what they were bought for. Defies the idea of an affordable collaboration, we think, and if we wanted to pay big bucks we’d head straight to Marni, not via H&M. Naughty eBay sellers. Nothing like a heat wave to bring out the sorbet shades! We bet you all spent the weekend revelling in whatever sunshine was peeking though the clouds. It was truly a godsend for the fashion conscious, as it meant we could whip out our sorbet shades that have been sitting so patiently in our wardrobes since we bought them! Long live Jonathan Saunders’ pop pastels and the iridescent floral lusciousness of a Christopher Kane skirt. More […]
