A Generation Of Engagement Rings

We take for granted that the offering of a diamond engagement ring has always been the standard method for solidifying and declaring an intention to marry. Really, though, the tradition is less than a century old. Diamonds didn’t come into fashion for engagements until around the start of WWII, after an exhaustive marketing campaign by DeBeers and NW Ayer. The burst of popularity kept growing and, over the years, even the style of “the norm” has shifted and changed. Here is a look at the last fifty years of engagement ring trends. 2010s Welcome to the present! In this decade, we are all about the bling. The most popular sellers at Diamonds Forever in San Diego are engagement rings with one large stone surrounded by several smaller stones. Even the band is set with diamonds. If the band is not set with diamonds, it is set with other gems or features ornate etching or carving. The more sparkle, the happier the wearer will be! [Image: https://www.diamondsforeversandiego.com/] 2000s During this decade we were struggling to find ourselves a little bit. We were a nation recovering from a devastating attack, fighting multiple wars and our economy was tanking, big time. Depressing, right? If that weren’t difficult enough for the diamond and engagement industry, 2006 was the year of the Blood Diamond movie with Leonardo DiCaprio which brought tons of attention to how diamonds were mined and sold. The good news is that it forced the industry to make some big changes in the right direction and many companies now embrace ethical mining. Style-wise, the first decade of the new millennium was all about princesses. The princess cut diamond, in particular, was the go-to. The ring itself would contrast the focal stone by featuring smaller, round-cut stones placed strategically around the primary stone […]

As  you would expect it was a lavish affair. How Celebrities Drive Engagement Ring Trends

It’s no secret that celebrities play a strong role in fashion. A specific designer could do very well for themselves if they are lucky enough to drape their design across a celebrity’s body. The same holds true for engagement rings. Remember when Prince William presented Duchess Kate with Princess Diana’s sapphire and diamond ring when they got engaged? Brides-to-be all across the world clamored at the possibility to have a ring just like hers. Who could forget Lady Gaga’s heart-shaped ring, which may very well have increased the sales of diamond engagement rings?  These are just a few examples of rings that caused a commotion and had everyone “oohing” and “aahing”; not to mention scrambling to find a similar piece for the perfect engagement. In 2013, the biggest trend was the cushion cut diamond set in a pave halo setting. This is the exact ring that Ryan Sweeting used to propose to Kaley Cuoco from The Big Bang Theory. Kelly Roland, formerly of Destiny’s Child, also got this exact same cut and setting from her then-boyfriend, manager Tim Witherspoon. This engagement ring combination was highly popular during 2013 because it gave the illusion that the center diamond was bigger than it actually is, thanks to the pave halo. Yet another trend that has taken Hollywood (and the collective masses) by storm is the vintage or antique look. These diamond engagement rings evoke old Hollywood glamour and, in many cases, include various accent stones. Kylie Minogue received one such ring from her boyfriend Joshua Sasse when he proposed back in January 2016. Mary-Kate Olsen is another lucky Hollywood maven who got a vintage-inspired rock from her fiance Olivier Sarkozy. Another antique diamond engagement ring that made all the ladies swoon is the seven-carat stunner that George Clooney used to propose to Amal […]

Can marriage make you happier?

The institution of marriage is alive and well for good reason. According to psychologists, being married can make you happier than having money, kids, or sex. It’s no wonder that couples in love are sending out so many wedding invitations every year. In the United States alone, 2.4 million couples say “I do” annually. A whopping $72 billion is spent on weddings and receptions, although the average cost per couple is $28,385. If you want to save money on your nuptials, you might want to hold your big day in Utah, which is the least expensive state to do so. The most expensive state to tie the knot is New York. If you want to follow the crowd, glitzy Las Vegas tops the list as the most popular wedding location, followed by Hawaii. Parents of brides still pay the majority of wedding costs, although brides and grooms themselves pick up 40% of expenses. The most sought-after season to unite in holy matrimony is summer, especially June, but couples opt for every season of the year. Although winter is the least popular season, couples that do opt for the frigid months often select Christmas as their date. Where did all these couples meet? In the age of Internet access to just about everything, the same holds true for love, as one in six engaged individuals meet online. For more information, check out this interesting infographic that sums up everything.

The bikini fashion evolution: From coverage to exposure

The bikini has been around for centuries, evolving quickly to become what we know today. We have gone from the most conservative no show styles to the ones that have left nothing to the imagination. We should appreciate the swimsuit styles over the years and let me tell you I fully support all the changes that were made. Early 1900´s FULL COVERAGE: when the railroad was introduced people began to visit ocean side places. Women´s fashion was these long dresses that were very uncomfortable to enjoy and play at the beach. They were called “bathing gowns” with weights sewed to them, so they will not rise in the water thinking this way they could retain their modesty, but quickly we engaged in a new era… 1930´s LIBERTY: Fashion made history in this year by exposing a little bit of skin and liberating women from long skirts and sleeves. Freedom! Let’s remember that synchronized swimming was very popular so these new designs allow them to flatter more their bodies and techniques. The V back was invented and some started wearing the first bikinis. 1960´s CHANGE: Fashion started changing rather quickly with the introduction of bikinis and low cut bathing suit bottoms. Designers started focusing on taste for the younger market. They were very influenced by the music scene so metallic and printed materials were the revolution. With the impact of the upcoming culture beachwear became less conservative to keep up with the future trends that were impacting society at this point. 1990´s REVOLUTION: The decade of the “thong” bikini started resulting from the sex revolution in the 70´s. Bikini tops were just like bras at this point. Having a tan was the most popular thing in this decade, so the less the better at the beach. Tankinis were introduced by designers […]

Are Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney married or not?

Lady Gaga often confuses us with her outfit choices, but now she’s also confused us in terms of her relationship status too. We know that Mother Monster and her long-term boyfriend Chicago Fire actor Taylor Kinney are pretty private about their personal lives (and fair play to them!) but rumours are rife that the couple have had a private “commitment ceremony”. And not many people are sure what that means… Does this mean that the couple are engaged or even married? Although Lady Gaga doesn’t have what us traditional folk would describe as an engagement ring, a ring has found itself on Taylor’s ring finger, which makes people believe that she and Taylor are now a little more than just boyfriend and girlfriend… “They don’t have time to plan a wedding, so they decided they would have a small gathering to show the people they love most how committed they are to one another,” a ‘source’ close to the couple reportedly told The Daily Star. “It was just for her family and a few close art and designer friends.” Interesting. That’s all the info we’re going to get for the time being. We think Lady Gaga will let us and the rest of her Little Monsters know the deal when the time is right. Congratulations on your, er, commitment guys! [Refinery 29]

Five of the Most Lavish Celebrity Weddings

No one does weddings like celebrities; spectacular, wildly extravagant nuptials are not uncommon when movie stars and other famous brides and grooms tie the knot. We can try to replicate the same grandeur with all the diamond rings and fancy things we want. However, there are a few celebrity weddings that truly stand-out from the rest of the pack. 1. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were married in a sunset ceremony in July of 2000 on a Malibu, California estate. Guests included Courtney Cox, David Schwimmer, Salma Hayek, and Cameron Diaz. The theme of the event was a “Zen garden” and included 50,000 flowers plus candles in the reception tent. A gospel choir and four bands performed, and guests were served lobster and champagne at the reception. A Fireworks display topped off the evening. 2. Donald Trump and Melania Knauss No list of most lavish anything would be complete without real mogul Donald Trump’s name somewhere on it. He wed model Melania Knauss in Palm Beach, Florida in January 2005 and the reception was held at Trump’s stunning Mar-a- Largo Club. The bride wore a 50 pound Christian Dior wedding gown that featured 1,500 beaded crystals, and a 13 foot train. Some of the guests included Barbara Walters, Katie Couric, Rudy Giuliana, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Simon Cowell, Regis Philbin, and Kelly Ripa. The ballroom of Mar-a-Largo was made to look like Versailles for the reception and was decorated with 10,000 flowers. 3. Tiger Woods and Elin Nordgren A grand wedding is no guarantee of marital bliss, but Tiger Woods and Elin Nordgren certainly got married life off to a royal start. They married in 2004 at the exclusive Sandy Lane Resort on the Caribbean island of Barbados. Woods rented out the entire resort in an […]

Mulberry profits drop 50%, what it plans to do about it

We’ve known for a while now that Mulberry isn’t doing as well as it once was as far as profits were concerned, but we didn’t know how bad it was until now. Profits have reportedly dropped a staggering 50%, but fans of the British label shouldn’t fear because it has a plan: it’s going to make its bags even more affordable. And that can only be a good thing, right? “We really didn’t focus at all on the £500-£800 price range which is really very critical in the market” executive chairman Godfrey Davis said. “A lot of our very loyal customers got quite cheesed-off and so we’ve listened to our customers, first of all, and also I’ve been very engaged in the last 12 weeks in retuning our collections and the way they’re balanced.” We told a few weeks ago how much we loved Mulberry’s brand new bag, the much more affordable Tessie, and we’re pleased to report that the public have loved it too as 500 units have already been sold in the UK alone. “It’s our best-selling bag bar one – it’s in the top two or three best-sellers, and it hasn’t really had all the marketing and all those things behind it,” Godfrey Davis added. Although prices of current bags won’t be slashed any time soon – bad news for fans of the ever-popular Alexa – we have a feeling that a lot more bags in the Tessie price range will be available in the near future. Mulberry is expected to hold a presentation during London Fashion Week this September, so watch this space! [Telegraph]

Miranda Kerr is the new face of Wonderbra!

We’re used to seeing Miranda Kerr posing in her underwear thanks to all her years at Victoria’s Secret, but now the Aussie supermodel is getting her kit off for a whole new brand; and that brand is none other than Wonderbra! Although her pics – and the underwear itself – are a lot less provocative than we are used to seeing from Miranda, there’s no denying that she looks as gorgeous as ever. We know she doesn’t need any tricks to look good in lingerie, but it’s nice to know that we have a better chance of looking like Miranda thanks to the wonderful Wonderbra technology. And Wonderbra isn’t the only big project Miranda is working on now that she has parted ways with Victoria’s Secret. She has since become the new face of Swarovski, H&M, Reebok, and is even recording an Elvis Presley cover. Yep, she’s busier than ever and as big Miranda fans, we couldn’t be happier about it!

Did Leighton Meester and Adam Brody secretly get married?

Did former Gossip Girl Leighton Meester and former The OC star Adam Brody secretly get married? If we are to believe the reports that have been doing the rounds over the past 24 hours, the answer is a big fat yes! The wedding band on Adam’s finger pretty much gave that away… Adam and Leighton reportedly only got engaged around three months ago, but we think they might just be one of the cutest couples in Hollywood – they’re both incredibly good looking and hail from two of our favourite shows from back in the (sort of) day. And who doesn’t love a whirlwind romance? We’re all for celebs having their privacy, but we do have a burning question that we really want answered. Who did Leighton Meester wear down the aisle? We predict that she went for a Vera Wang gown, seeing as she was once the face of the Vera Wang Lovestruck fragrance (and what a beautiful face she was!) but then she may have done a Keira Knightley and gone for something understated instead… what do you think? We hope someone spills the beans soon or better still, issues an official photograph, because we think the former Blair Waldorf would make a gorgeous bride!

Olivia Palermo wraps up in Zadig & Voltaire in NYC

We saw the celebs practically sweating on the red carpets of Los Angeles these past few weeks, but the same can’t be said for all of our famous American friends. Olivia Palermo is currently in the Big Apple, where the weather isn’t exactly bikini top and short shorts appropriate; and that’s putting it lightly. Olivia is living, breathing proof that you can still look cool, trendy and totally jaw droopingly fabulous when you’re all wrapped up in your comfiest and cosiest clothes too. We’d give anything to swap lives and wardrobes with Olivia Palermo… The newly engaged fashionista showcased all her aforemetioned fashion credentials by wrapping up in a cute Zadig & Voltaire turtleneck sweater, which she accessorised with J Brand skinny jeans, a Philosophy top, a sleeveless overcoat and some fierce Giorgio Armani booties. Oh and a very covetable Chloé bag, obviously. She definitely teaches us a thing or two about dressing for the cold; her winter look is perfection! [Image]

Hussein Chalayan named Vionnet’s demi-couture designer

2014 has already got off to a great start for a lot of people; Olivia Palermo got engaged, Kaley Cuoco got married, and now Hussein Chalayan has an epic new job as Vionnet’s demi-couture designer. Congrats! “I’m extremely happy about this collaboration because I think that Hussein is a supertalented, forward-thinking designer,” said Vionnet creative director Goga Ashkenazi. “He is a true artist, very conceptual; he thinks out of the box and has a strong architectural approach. He represents what Madeleine Vionnet represented in her era.” High praise indeed; we can definitely see where Goga was coming from if Hussein Chalayan’s work at his eponymous label – which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year – is anything to go by. We’re excited to see what the new collection brings; it’ll be unveiled on January 21st during Couture Fashion Week in Paris so keep your eyes peeled! [WWD]

Kim Kardashian defends her 10% eBay charity donations

She’s probably one of the richest celebrity women in the world – especially now she is engaged to Kanye West – but Kim Kardashian doesn’t have a reputation of being the most charitable celeb. The reality TV star has come under fire several times for donating just 10% of the profit she makes from selling her clothes on eBay to charities… and now she has finally put pen to paper to try and set the record straight. Or finger to keyboard, more like. “I do eBay auctions monthly and change the charity or church from time to time. I give 10% of all my earnings to charities, not just these eBay auctions. This month it’s for the people of the Philippines, last month was Life Change Community Church,”she wrote on her website.  In regards to these eBay auctions, when the eBay numbers get broken down, the auction management agency that posts for me gets a percentage for all of their hard work, then eBay listing fees, end of auction fees, eBay Store fees, Paypal fees, etc., all add up to about half of the sale. Then I give 10% to a charity. Truth is how the # is broken down, is neither here nor there. The people of the Philippines need all of our help, no matter how big or small. Over the last 5+ years, I have listed thousands of items on eBay Giving Works for various causes. I will continue to do what is in my heart and am happy to know many others have enjoyed purchasing from me, as they too are giving with me. Giving comes from the heart. We all need to be reminded of this as we celebrate the holiday season this year. Well that certainly does break things down! Do you see where Kim is […]

Scarlett Johansson rocks red Dolce and Gabbana for Marie Claire UK December

Oh hello Scarlett Johansson! The seductive 28-year-old actress has been selected as the Marie Claire UK December cover star, and although it’s a reprint from an earlier American version of the mag, ScarJo’s is no less attention-grabbing. We definitely think it’ll shift its fair share of copies! Scarlett opens up to the mag about love, getting engaged to her French advertising executive fiancé Romain Dauriac, and how she feels about the pornographic nature of her new Martin Scorsese directed film, Don Jon.  “If I found out that my boyfriend was watching that much porn I would be totally flabbergasted, for sure. It would be very confusing,” she began telling the mag. “I’m sure I should have some well-developed view on its effect on society, the ethics behind it and how it affects the kind of relationships between men and women and how it objectifies women. But I don’t really think about it.” You can find out what else Scarlett said in the December issue of Marie Claire UK, which hits newsstands from today!

“She was the easiest model we’ve had,” Carine Roitfeld on photographing Kim Kardashian

We think Carine Roitfeld singing your praises is one of the best slightly belated birthday presents ever, so we bet Kim Kardashian would have been pretty chuffed yesterday if she just so happened to be reading Time Out magazine. Carine Roitfeld talked to the mag about the latest issue of her CR Fashion Book, and we loved what she had to say about one of our fave reality stars. Or since she is now officially engaged, should we say the future Mrs Kanye West? For those of you who think Kim doesn’t do much, Carine sets the record straight about her talents… “First of all she’s beautiful – and in fashion, that is a talent you know,” Carine began. “She was also a very sweet person, a hard worker. You don’t see her in parties drinking loads of alcohol. She’s controversial, but so was Marilyn Monroe and I always like controversial people. I hope the issue will be a good souvenir for her and her baby. “She was brave because with Karl Lagerfeld shooting, we always finish very late – we finished at 2am in the morning, and she was very pregnant. She had one guy for hair, one guy for make-up – no extensions or lashes – and for her it must have been like being naked, and she accepted everything. I don’t think normally she would wear those sort of clothes – I’ve never seen her in a Comme des Garcons jumpsuit or a basketball jacket, but she said yes to everything. She was the easiest model we’ve had. And when we put a mask on her face, she didn’t say anything.’ Aww – you can’t get bigger praise than that, surely? The third issue of the CR Fashion Book is out now should you wish to see […]

What to Look for in an Engagement Ring?

[noskim] How wonderful to have made a decision to become engaged and commit to another person, Congratulations! Now comes the hard part…finding the perfect symbol of everlasting love. Well not to worry, we’re here to help..here’s our tips on what to look for in the perfect engagement ring: There are tons of different styles of diamond rings to choose from, so lets discuss a few of the more popular options. A. SOLITAIRE. A solitaire diamond is usually round, but it also can be cut into shapes that are not as common. For example: a “cushion” is square with the corners rounded for the “princess” is also square but with pointed corners, instead of rounded. A “marquise” is oval shaped with the top and bottom pointed. A “pearl” is similar to a marquise expect that the bottom and top are slightly rounded. Perhaps a heart shaped solitaire will be the perfect symbol of love. B. A SOLITAIRE with ACCENTS offers something extra and unique. On both sides of the main, centre solitaire would be smaller stones. These accents can be the same cut as the main solitaire or can be totally different in shape and colour. C. The THREE STONE version of an engagement ring can be of any size and shape. It is the symbolism behind this style of ring that is of greater importance, it can be interpreted as the past, present and future or it can have a religious meaning with God being an intricate part of the two of you. The 4 C’s in reference to diamonds stands for: Colour, Cut, Clarity and Carat. COLOUR Ideally, diamonds should be clear with no colour. There is an alpha scale on which diamond colours are graded. Unlike school grades, a “D” is the highest and most desirable grade. An […]

Poppy Delevingne keeps out the Scotland chill in Chanel

If only we were gorgeous famous models and could don not one but two pieces of Chanel at the next event we attended… The newly engaged Poppy Delevingne wrapped up warm for the ‘Chanel: Metiers d’Art Pre-Fall 2013’ fashion show in Scotland last night, wearing a full-length double-breasted  blue coat from the fashion House’s autumn/winter 2012 collection. It pretty much looks like it was made for her, giving her a beautiful shape and complementing the warm golden tones of her skin and hair perfectly. We love the addition of the brown furry hat too – something so attention-grabbing could pull focus from the main attraction (which in this case is the coat, natch) but not in Poppy’s case: everything worked together seamlessly and she looked the picture of perfection! Poppy’s boots added just the right amount of effortless androgyny to the look, and the quilted Chanel handbag just gave the ensemble that final finishing  “wow” touch. Flawless – we can all take tips from Poppy for our winter dressing.  [Image]

Channel the celebs and accessorise your eyes with coloured contact lenses!

Accessorising doesn’t end with a sexy pair of shoes or some delicious arm candy, oh no. Changing the colour of your eyes is all the rage in celebville right now, and not just for Halloween! We’ve seen the celebs regularly sport different coloured eyes in the fashion glossies, but coloured contact lenses are the best way to go about it without someone some post-production Photoshopping. Some famous faces love their coloured contacts so much that their natural eye colours might surprise you! Did you know that the newly-engaged Jennifer Aniston actually has brown eyes, but swears by her blue contact lenses to complement her blonde hair and bronzed skin tone? Drew Barrymore disguises her naturally blue eyes with a sultry set of brown contact lenses, which we reckon makes the rest of her gorgeous features stand out even more.  Penelope Cruz looks stunning regardless of what she wears on her body, face, feet and eyes, but we can definitely see why she prefers her green contact lenses; juxtaposed with her gorgeous Mediterranean features, she stands out even more than usual! So, when you’re planning your outfit for your next big party, don’t forget your eyes! If you’re going somewhere kitsch and quirky, don a pair of oversized glasses – geek chic has never been hotter. Miley Cyrus wears Christian Dior for Marie Claire US September

Another one of our highly anticipated September covers has been released from the fashion glossy vault this morning – Miley Cyrus for Marie Claire US! We didn’t think anything was going to top her effortlessly glamorous cover for the same mag last March, but we think this may have just done it. Miley has grown up a lot in these past twelve months – she is engaged to be married to the beautiful Liam Hemsworth, after all! – and the cover shot definitely reflects that. We think the stylist’s decision to put her in Christian Dior (the same piece Mila Kunis wore for Elle UK last month) was a genius way to showcase her maturity and evolvement in the fashion world. Do you love this cover as much as we do? We finally got our hands on some of the editorial pics, and as predicted, they are just as jaw-dropping as the stunning cover. Miley’s a million miles away from Hannah Montana now!

It originally cost £119, was then reduced to just £35 (!!) but is now understandably sold out. The Kate effect – need we say more? She accessorised with a cute woven belt and Pied a Terre espadrilles, which she took off while playing tennis so she could get well and truly stuck in to the game. Gwen Stefani donates her Galliano wedding dress to the V&A museum

Many magazine issues across the board are bound to feature, in one way or another, the genius work of John Galliano in the coming months. But as Elle embraces Gwen Stefani as its cover girl for April, it may have just pipped the others to the post. In an exclusive interview with the British magazine, pop singer-turned-fashion-designer Gwen Stefani talks candidly to old friend and Garbage front-girl Shirley Manson about her world and all things fashion – and, more importantly, handing over her Galliano wedding dress to the V&A museum. A snippet from the interview below: SM: “What have you worn over the years that you’ve thought, ‘F***, I looked good!’ GS: My wedding dress. SM: That wedding dress was insane! [John Galliano] is one of the greatest living designers. GS: Oh, for sure. When I got engaged and someone told me that John said he would make my dress, I was like really? I said I wanted it to be over the top, but not traditional – I wanted it to be everything. But how do you tell this genius over the phone? He was, like, OK, and sent me these drawings of this unbelievable, perfect dress. It’s going into the V&A now. I didn’t wanna send it because I was scared it would get ruined. But it’s a work of art, it needed to be seen.” It seems one way or another John Galliano’s design legend is destined to live on, alongside his notorious work. Catch the full interview in the April issue of ELLE magazine, on sale today (Wednesday 9th March).

Natalie Portman in Vionnet

From one baby bump to the next, actress Natalie Portman is just one of the many celebrities to jump on the blooming band wagon as of late, but whilst attending the Palm Springs Film Festival in California on Saturday, the young mum-to-be proved she’s the one to watch in the maternity style stakes. Unlike Victoria, Natalie’s expecting her first child in just a few months giving her a head start in the battle of the baby bumps, and boy did she make the most of it. Dressed to impress on the night and looking positively radiant, the Black Swan actress wore a Vionnet ruffled hemline frock from the label’s SS11 collection, complete with a white chiffon upper half and gold stud collar and cuff detailing – and the loose cut streamlined her tiny bump to perfection. Picking up the Desert Palm Achievement Actress Award at the event and tipped for many more for her role in Black Swan, newly engaged Ms. Portman certainly has a lot to smile about these days – and we, for one, can’t wait to go ballerina crazy when the film’s released over here next week.

Louis Vuitton AW10: curves ahead

Young waif-like models may have reigned supreme in recent seasons, but Louis Vuitton are embracing curves for A/W10 , and the French fashion house hired a handful of voluptuous supers to prove it. Elle Macpherson, Laetitia Casta and newly-engaged Lara Stone were among the models to hit the runway showcasing their curves in Marc Jacobs’ sexy autumn offerings, which included corsets and halter-neck dresses for the womanly woman. Designers are always saying they’re going to do a collection for women, but then every girl on the runway is under twenty, claimed Marc, who may or may not have presented one of the most wearable collections yet. I wanted a variety of ages and sizes. We set out to cast gorgeous women, women who feel happy to put their make-up on, get dressed up, get all their accessories, he told the Telegraph, adding, it’s a bit old-fashioned, I know, but I think it’s nice for a change. And change for next season, if Marc’s latest offering for Louis Vuitton is anything to go by, comes in the form of mid-calf length skirts, as he single-handedly brings back the midi-skirt. Take note from Elle Macpherson, who led the finale in a mid-calf rose corset dress with a draped train, if you need convincing. [Images]
