Michelle Obama is American Vogue’s April cover star

Anna Wintour always saves the best ‘til last when it comes to releasing the Vogue US issues, and we can definitely see why she made us wait for the April one as it features none other than Michelle Obama on the cover! We guess those rumours were true all along! The First Lady was photographed by Annie Leibovitz in the Red Room of the White House, and is wearing a strikingly stunning blue Reed Krakoff dress on the cover. As well as the gorgeous pictures and candidly open interview, the best thing about this cover star is the fact that she is joined (in both pics and interview) by her hubby, who just so happens to be the President of the United States, Barack Obama! How can any other magazine compete with that?! “Our job is, first and foremost, to make sure our family is whole,” said the First Lady. “You know, we have small kids; they’re growing every day. But I think we were both pretty straightforward when we said, ‘Our number-one priority is making sure that our family is whole.’” Click here to read the rest of this extraordinary interview and see more beautiful pictures.

Kate Upton to get her American Vogue cover debut this June!

Didn’t we tell you that Kate Upton would be getting Anna Wintour’s seal of approval this year? We can’t help but feel that we told you, hence the smug look on our faces right now! Kate Upton got her British Vogue debut earlier this year by fronting the January issue (and what a beautiful image it was!) and it looks like she’ll be covering the Stateside version before the year is out too, as rumour has it she’s bagged the June cover. Pretty impressive, considering this is the same girl who had to reportedly pay $25,000 for her Met Gala ticket last year! The theme for the June issue is reportedly “summer escapes” so we imagine picturesque landscapes, scorching beaches and minimal clothing will all feature prominently in the cover and editorial images. Are you excited to see Kate’s American Vogue debut cover? Do you think it’ll be the first of many or should she stick to Sports Illustrated? [Fashionista] [Image]

Ulyana Sergeenko brings drama to the Dior AW13 front row

We can always count on Ulyana Sergeenko to mix things up on the front row, and the Christian Dior Paris Fashion Week show was no exception. The Russian fashion designer always provides us with some of the most eccentric – but never ill informed – looks, most of which some in the most luxurious and unaffordable forms. Ulyana rocked up to the Dior show wearing the voluminous cobalt blue printed skirt fresh from the most recent Couture runway, and accessorised with a plain black top, and a very dramatic veiled black fascinator. Some might argue that she wouldn’t have seen much with the veil in her face, but then again, fashion royalty such as Miss Anna Wintour and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen seldom attend a front row without their darkest shades covering their eyes… Do you like her front row look or do you think it’s attention-seeking and distracting?

Rooney Mara lands American Vogue’s February cover!

Finally, the American Vogue February 2013 cover has been released, and you’ll never guess who’s on the cover… it’s only Rooney Mara! We feel ashamed to say it, but we momentarily forgot about Rooney Mara, which is strange because this time last year the actress was all over the red carpets having her well-deserved moment in the spotlight during awards season. We’re glad she’s back though, so big thanks to Anna Wintour for putting the wheels in motion, and to David Sims for taking the stunning pictures! As much as we love Rooney and the fact that she is on the fashion Bible front cover once again, we aren’t hugely thrilled with the main image or the fact that her beautiful face has been covered with all that writing. Especially since we also checked out some of the editorial images (see below) and were blown away by how naturally beautiful – and somewhat innocent – she looks. She’s definitely come a long way since the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and the difference between this cover and her previous one for the mag is conclusive proof of that! Click here to see Rooney pose in some gorgeous garments from the likes of Calvin Klein Collection, Helmut Lang, and Alexander Wang, and to check out some sneaky peeks from her interview.

Gwen Stefani sparkles in YSL for American Vogue’s January issue

Gwen Stefani actually lives on our coffee table these days. Not literally of course (we haven’t overdone it on the mulled wine just yet) as we are in fact talking about het fashion glossy take-over. The No Doubt singer, yummy mummy and fierce fashionista h sas had Anna Wintour’s approval as she is the cover star for American Vogue’s highly anticipated January issue. Talk about saving the best til last! The blonde rock chick was photographed by Vogue-fave Annie Leibovitz, and is wearing a stunning Saint Laurent Paris (to use its proper name) bolero that we, being the magpies that we are, can’t seem to take our eyes off. Among the gorgeous pictures in the editorial is a great interview where Gwen talks about her family, her relationship with hubby Gavin Rossdale and her solo career. The issue is out on December 25th – if you feel like taking a post Christmas turkey dinner stroll to your local shop, make sure the mag is among your purchases because you won’t want to miss the fashion Bible’s first issue of the new year.

Will the power of fashion’s tastemakers sway you politically?

Their translation of trends influences what we fill our wardrobes with, we take their word for it when designer gets a little difficult to decipher (Prada’s S/S’13 collection, anyone?), and we strive to somehow recreate their thoroughly individual styles for want of feeling part of the fash pack – basically, fashion’s tastemakers rule the roost. But what of the recent involvement of fashion in the dark and twisted world of politics? Does the power these tastemakers possess transcend to the White House, or the polling stations being lined by several million Americans today? The First Lady’s super-scrutinised, often lauded wardrobe; Ann Romney’s take on pink being a point of contention between the political and style rivals (some would agree with the latter), and who can forget Anna Wintour’s mammoth, star-studded Pro-bama fundraising efforts. Beyoncé even donned those ‘Obama’ hoop earrings again, and Katy Perry’s nailed the campaigning efforts with those nails, set to sway many in the direction of politico-inspired nail art, and possibly an indirect way of saying: You keep Obama, you keep America looking pretty. (We’re not swayed, we promise. We can’t even vote!) So, we put this to you, our loyal and currently-facing-political-crunch-time US readers: With a neck-and-neck start to bagging the most powerful political position in the world, has your decision today been influenced at all by the tastemakers to whom you aspire? Non-US readers can (hypothetically) join in too. Honest answers only and we’ll let you know once the votes are in.

Kate Upton is now a Vogue cover girl!

You better believe it Kate Upton critics… the 20-year-old former Sports Illustrated model has just scored her first ever Vogue cover. It didn’t take long for her to cement her fashionista status and get Vogue’s seal of approval, did it? First Carine Roitfeld’s CR Fashion Book and now Vogue – what next, we wonder? Having said that, Vogue Italia doesn’t actually reflect every single issue of the fashion Bible. After all, Kim Kardashian has fronted the Italian version of the mag, despite Anna Wintour vowing to never choose Kim or any of the Kardashian “klan” (sorry!) to front the US edition. Still, Vogue is still Vogue at the end of the day and we think Kate looks incredible. There’s something very old pin-up girl/Cindy Crawford back in the day about it, don’t you think? Plus, we haven’t seen a model fill a bra quite like Kate on the front of a fashion glossy for quite some time, so nice going!

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen honoured at WSJ Innovator of the Year

Huge congratulations to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen this morning, as the twins were honoured at the WSJ Innovator of the Year Awards which were held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York last night. The 26-year-old child stars turned fashion designers picked up the Innovator of the Year prize in the ‘Fashion’ category for having “an eye for nearly monastic classicism that’s redefining American luxury”. The award was presented to them by film producer Jane Rosenthal. The event was also attended by a host of other fashionable presences, including Anna Wintour who presented the ‘Design’ award to the multi-talented Patrick Kinmonth. We’re glad the Olsen twins stayed true to their signature – albeit sometimes questionable – personal sartorial styles too, as they wore dark, loose-fitting garments teamed with bags from their award-winning The Row clothing line. Very worthy winners if you ask us!

First look: Watch Sarah Jessica Parker in Glee!

We have an exciting midweek treat for you this Wednesday morning. Forget the horrible, unpredictable, impossible-to-dress-for weather, sit back, relax and watch a cheeky clip of the wonderful Sarah Jessica Parker in Glee!  True to our word a few months ago, SJP will be appearing in several episodes of the hit Fox show as Isabelle, the editor of vogue.com. And as we told you before, her wardrobe has been selected by editor extraordinaire Anna Wintour, so bear that in mind as you’re watching intently. We thought this role might be Carrie Bradshaw all over again, but we have a feeling that Isabelle is going to bring something new to the table. Watch the clip below where SJP/Isabelle meets Kurt for the first time and the pair discuss fashion and food poisoning. Enjoy! http://youtu.be/ngbLG_e7ZmQ

Beyonce and Sarah Jessica Parker design clothes to support Obama

It’s nearly election time in the good old US of A (November 6th, fyi) and it looks like President Obama has got even more celebs on side as part of Anna Wintour’s Runway to Win campaign! Famous faces such as Beyonce and Sarah Jessica Parker have taken it upon themselves to help design pro-Obama clothes and accessories to ensure that the President stays in the White House once again. Beyonce and her mother Tina Knowles have designed some pro Obama baby onesies under their popular House of Deréon label (too cute!) while Sarah Jessica Parker teamed up with Tracy L Cox from Faster Than Paris to design a “Viva Obama” T-shirt. Ricky Martin also got in on the action by designing a tee that reads “Unidos”. Click here to check out all of the pieces, which also include contributions from Diane von Furstenberg, Rachel Zoe, Prabal Gurung and Tory Burch. London Fashion Week SS13: Day 4

Twitter was blowing up today, and that could only mean one thing: the Burberry show! There were celebrities left right and centre who attended to watch Christopher Bailey present his spring/summer 2013 offering at Kensington Gardens, and among those sitting pretty on the front row were Dita von Teese (star struck!) Olympic gold medalist Victoria Pendleton, Andy Murray, Tali Lennox, Anna Wintour, Laura Bailey and even the loveable Harry Styles among many others. Below is our recap of the Burberry Prorsum show, and some highlights from some of the other shows we attended on the fourth day of London Fashion Week. Enjoy! Who: Burberry Prorsum What: Colour crazy! A bold collection with a rich and extensive colour palette, with lots of fabric experimenting too! Sexy, sultry and sassy definitely sprang to mind when we first clapped eyes on the collection, and according to reports, that’s exactly what the main man himself said he was going for. Mission accomplished, Sir! Highlight: Seeing the extent of the brightness of the collection when the models paraded down the runway during the finale. We thought the music was pretty special too! To summarise: An opulent, colourful, diverse collection which is set to have celebs – and us ordinary folk – foaming at the mouth.   Who: Antonio Berardi What: Geometric, bold, intricate, structured, defined silhouettes; this year’s Antonio Berardi girl definitely has the attitude and isn’t afraid to show it! Despite the fact that there were many sporty, less glam pieces on the runway (we’re talking about the racer-back pieces in particular) the sequin offerings more than made up for it. We adore the versatility, and Antonio’s more relaxed take on the peplum was genius! Highlight: The pink sequin dress! To summarise:  Embellished and glittering garments mixed with geometric and structured ones for an overall […]

Autumn wedding guest outfit picks for the petite lady!

[noskim] Everyone loves a good summer wedding. But let’s face it, summer weddings in England are very few and far between, which is why happy couples continue to plan their big day in the autumn/winter season… at least you know what you’re getting weatherwise and won’t be kidding yourselves. So with that in mind, we’ve been seeking out some wedding-appropriate outfits should any of our friends decide to do a Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds and tie the knot any time soon. If like me you’re slightly vertically challenged and are lacking in height, Precis is one of the best ports of call for finding gorgeous petite clothing. We can’t all have Kate Moss legs (sniff)! Here’s a few of my current faves on the website: Autumn Bloom Shift Dress I utterly adore this Autumn Bloom Shift Dress. It has two of the new season’s hottest colours – purple and orange – and has a gorgeous waist defining belt too. I’d pair it with some super-high orange platforms if I’m feeling bold or nude ones if I want the dress to do all the talking and a simple nude/grey shawl to complement the colours. Spot Print Jersey Dress If it’s a fellow-Greek wedding I’ll be attending, I know I’m going to be doing a lot (and I really do mean a lot) of eating, so I’m going to want a dress that lets me do that without restriction. This Spot Print Jersey Dress with its Diane von Furstenberg wrap-style detailing is perfect – and the busy design is wonderfully distracting! I’d definitely wear this with some Anna Dello Russo style bright and chunky accessories! Navy Satin Dress There’s something very Kate Middleton about this dress which is probably why I was instantly drawn to it!  This is a great piece […]

6 celebrity style icons worthy of their own clothing label

There is a long list of contemporary stylish ladies who are equally as eye catching as the Hepburn’s, Kelly’s and Monroe’s of yesteryear. These ladies have an ‘until death do us part’ kinda relationship with fashion, and their extensive wardrobes, impeccable taste and dedication to looking stylish knows no bounds. So to celebrate the women at the fore of fashionable happenings and their enviable sense of style, we’ve decided to chart our top 6 style icons… Rihanna We think RiRi’s sartorial reputation precedes her. Yes, she has a penchant for expletive-laden footwear (cue: X Factor performance in those trainers), wearing clothes emblazoned with illegal substances and often pushes the limits of fashion to an unimaginable edge, but she never fails to carry off her eccentric wardrobe. High Street, high fashion our outrageously high heels worn with leather shorts; she really is the only girl in the world who can execute it with perfection! Fave 2012 fashion moment: In Givenchy Haute Couture at the 2012 BRIT Awards, Olivia Palermo Gracing front row at headline-hitting fashion shows; girlfriend to a HOT model and the owner of a wardrobe over spilling with sartorial perfection, Olivia Palermo is a no-brainer on our Style Icons list! The flawless beauty, who fronts the cover of the Instyle UK October issue, revealed she likes ‘walking out of the house feeling fully pulled together.’ Something she sure has down to a t! The queen of nonchalant off-duty dressing (she even makes dog walking look stylish!), Olivia is often spotted in impeccable style staples, including a well cut jacket, a statement (not ‘It’) bag and wow-inducing heels. Olivia’s timeless style is easy to translate, and appeals to a wider population – a large chunk of which definitely likes to look fashionably ‘pulled together’. Fave 2012 fashion moment: Rocking the peplum trend […]

Robert Pattinson is gorgeous in Gucci at Cosmopolis premiere

Anna Wintour has totally inspired us. We read what she had to say about breaking the rules on her first Vogue cover, so we decided to break some rules too… by turning our attention to a man’s style for a change. Not just any man mind… the ultra-dreamy British heartthrob that is Mr Robert Pattinson. Drool! We have to hand it to R-Pattz, who got all suited and booted in a stunning blue-grey Gucci piece and braved the red carpet for the New York premiere of Cosmopolis, as it was his first public appearance since all that Kristen Stewart cheating hoopla. We don’t like to comment on people’s personal lives (honest, we don’t…) but we think heartbreak actually agrees with him. R-Pattz and his beautifully chiseled face have never looked more gorgeous! Is it because his sudden availability and vulnerability makes him even more attractive? Let us know your thoughts! We’re here for hugs if you need us Robert!

Lady Gaga’s Vogue US September cover is finally here!

Thank you, Anna Wintour! Lady Gaga’s American Vogue September cover has without a doubt been the most highly anticipated September cover this year, and we’re breathing a huge sigh of relief as we confirm that it’s definitely been worth the wait. Gaga was photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott and styled by Grace Coddington, and is wearing a show-stopping purple Marc Jacobs dress from the autumn/winter 2012 collection. She teamed her cover look with a hair-raising barnet and natural make-up; gorgeous! Is this what you were expecting? We’ve learnt to not really predict things where Lady Gaga is concerned, hence why we didn’t spend a long time speculating, but we’re definitely not disappointed with what we see before us. Let’s hope the editorial pictures are just as stunning! Gaga really was the perfect choice for this issue; not only was her March issue last year a best-seller, but the singer always has something going on in her professional life to warrant fronting a cover. Plus she has one of the biggest fan bases known to man! American Vogue’s September issue is out on August 14th. Will you be buying it?

Five minutes with Style Passport’s Sarah Walter

Catering to our style and beauty needs for staycations, spa breaks and beach holidays and a whole lot more, by cherry picking products from ‘high/low’ fashion and beauty brands, Style Passport is the go-to destination for stylish holiday essentials. My Fashion Life caught up with the lady behind it all, Sarah Walter, who after starting a placement at British Vogue the same day Anna Wintour started at the magazine, and holding senior positions at Marie Claire, and Harpers, decided to set up Style Passport out of a ‘lifelong dream.’ Meet the woman who’s done it all… How did the idea to set up a specific platform like Style Passport come about? Style Passport is the culmination of my careers in magazines and then retail, combined with my huge passion for travel and adventure. Name three holiday spots you regularly visit and why. Our Cottage in the Brecon Beacons in Wales as often as I can to walk, garden and spend quality time with my family and friends. Baros in the Maldives which is the most perfect tiny island I have ever visited, with the best fish life I have ever seen, and New York. A friend said her only regret in life is she cannot visit New York for the first time again, I agree. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would that be? I’m getting keener and keener on California, the lifestyle is very appealing all that delicious food and wine and the drives…… Three things I never travel (abroad) without are… My iPhone for music, maps and note taking, a huge pair of sunglasses (currently loving Linda Farrow giant pink shades) to feel glamorous, protect me from the sun and to disguise jet lagged eyes. And finally a scarf which can be a wrap, towel, skirt, head wrap and […]

Couture Fashion Week: Christian Dior autumn/winter 2012

Never has a catwalk collection been more anticipated than the Christian Dior Haute Couture autumn/winter 2012 one that took place in Paris yesterday. The first collection shown by John Galliano’s successor was inevitably always going to be, but we don’t think Raf Simons let the nerves get the better of him. The new Creative Director presented a clean, fresh and downright beautiful Haute Couture collection that combined the true essence of the Christian Dior brand with the flare of femininity, romanticism, and contemporary edginess that he brought to Jil Sander. We bet Raf Simons was really feeling the pressure though, as the hottest names in fashion turned up to witness his first show. Donatella Versace, Marc Jacobs, Anna Wintour and Anna Dello Russo were all on the front row watching with very beady eyes! What do you think of Raf Simons’ first duties for Christian Dior?

Kim Kardashian finally gets her “Vogue” cover!

A slap on the face for a certain editrix who slapped a Met Ball ban on the woman with over 15 million ‘twitters’, or maybe a symbol of a star status well cemented, Kim Kardashian on the July/August issue of L’Uomo Vogue is well and truly surprising. Surprising because the most powerful woman at the helm of the Vogue collection (collectively, say Anna Wintour) has made her intentions clear about letting the reality star-cum-enormous attention amassing Armenian grace the cover of the US version of the publication. Surprising because the Kardashian clan has really had to fight in order to etch their name alongside Hollywood’s elite on wall of fame: they aren’t ‘famous’ for anything, but being famous. Yet here she is, bearing an uncanny, yet strikingly beautiful resemblance to her mother, better known as momager Kris Jenner, on the cover of another Condé Nast edition, and metaphorically raising a two fingered salute to those who deny her the bonafide star status she longs for. The black and white cover image shows Kim Kardashian in a situation she’s comfortably accustomed to – being hounded by the paparazzi, but looking particularly composed and oh-this-is–my life about it. Shot by Francesco Carrozzini, son of Vogue Italia’s ed-in-chief, Franca Sozzani, the shoot took place in LA’s Chinatown, accompanied by a rather aptly titled editorial “Just Unconventional.” Donning a wig, oversized shades and an upturned collar jacket that helps complete her Kris Jenner look, Kim has, what we call in the modern age of accomplishment, made it. As I type, Kim is at the zenith of her ‘public’ career, and in a position many – even those super-critical of her- would agreeably want to be. Current ‘measures’ of success and outreach, otherwise known as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are testament to this Kardashian’s infectiousness, […]

Emma Stone covers American Vogue’s July issue in Nina Ricci

As we excitedly and emotionally tweeted last night, American Vogue‘s July cover star is one other than the gorgeous, newly blonde Emma Stone! We literally let out a huge squeal when we set eyes upon the cover yesterday. Emma is the epitome of the all American beauty, and the Nina Ricci autumn/winter 2012 ensemble she is wearing combined with the pastel colours of the cover complement her locks and skin beautifully. And don’t even get us started on her flawless face – definitely something all the airbrushing in the world wouldn’t be able to achieve. This is hands down our favorite American Vogue cover this year… and that’s a powerful statement because Anna Wintour has churned out some blinders this year already! If you weren’t excited about seeing Emma and real life boyfriend Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spiderman before, we have a feeling you might be now. Let’s hope the editorial is just as wow-some as the cover; kudos Mario Testino!

Bright young things, those Olsen twins

Quietly, patiently, and super-stylishly, the world’s most famous twins took home the most coveted award in the fashion industry. That’s right. The doe-eyed, visually alike, stylistic pole opposites, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen walked away with the Womenswear Designer of the Year award for their luxury label, The Row, at the CFDA awards earlier this week, beating fashion behemoths the likes of Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler to the prestigious accolade. They are the very 25-year-old twins, who first stepped into the limelight on the ABC sitcom Full House as babies. With a life that started with baby steps into Hollywood, and an inevitable future of acting, fame and stardom (albeit not such a fashion-centric one back then) awaiting them, the Olsen’s finally chose fashion as the industry that would define them. Their fashionable inclinations were obvious from an early age, thanks to the corny on-screen outfits the girls profess to choosing themselves, right through to their late teens, when they began to develop a more refined-alternative dress sense. In an interview with ELLE magazine, the twins discussed their affinity for modest dressing – something that clearly sets them apart from the thigh-skimming frock fraternity we’re accustomed to. This association with an alternative style has led the twins to become one of the most successful fashion duos out there today. Proud creators of luxury fashion label, The Row (the one that brought us that $39,000 backpack), the creations of which they’re seen in at countless, high profile events (as at this year’s CFDA’s); a more affordable line by the name of Elizabeth and James, alongside Olsenboye (available only in the U.S.) and StyleMint; a site that offers the experience of a personal, virtual stylist, to get you looking Olsen-ready. The win for the Olsen’s at the CFDA’S on Monday night reminded […]

Has Kanye turned Kim into a demure goddess?

“Where have they gone?” I euphemistically and, rather rhetorically, ask myself every time I lay eyes on a post-‘Kimye’ Kim Kardashian. As the world became aware of the blossoming love between the blatant romance-deniers, I’ve become aware of Kim’s increasingly demure and understated wardrobe. A monochrome palette (similar to her beau’s); sleek cuts; ladylike peplums; below-the-knee dresses; sensible fashion choices at Cannes; copious amounts of uber-expensive-looking leather and cleavage concealing necklines have all made the rounds; and I’ve decided that I actually quite like the stylistically ‘born again’ Kim. Regularly seen in barely breathable, bust-enhancing, waist-reducing Hervé Léger bandage numbers, post divorce; Kim’s comeback as the Rapper’s Girlfriend hasn’t entirely been put down to personal effort. This is not to say I disliked Kim’s previous barely-there style, but I wonder if claims that dating Kanye West has improved her wardrobe actually hold any truth. Well, to figure that out, let’s begin with Kanye’s personal approach to style, his fashionable affiliations and, of course, his venture into fashion. Partial to a blazer, slouchy leather pants and eye-hurting sneakers, Kanye’s love of Givenchy, a blossoming friendship with creative director of said fashion house, Riccardo Tisci, and an eponymous fashion label with a rather dismal debut at Paris Fashion Week two seasons ago prove his fashionable inclinations. Given that, Kanye rather famously attended last month’s Met Ball sans Kim – a warning of sorts from the God of fashion, Anna Wintour, and the fact that Kim’s less-than-credible celebrity status – described in W magazine as the ‘fine art of playing herself – (a perfectly money-spinning method, may I add); does Kanye feel inclined to help bump up his beau’s credibility through influencing her style? Does he feel she’ll be taken ‘seriously’ by the inner circles of super-stardom if there’s more monochrome than major-boobage on […]

What we really thought of Kanye West’s first fashion collection

I must admit that, perhaps unlike others, when I first heard Kanye West was launching a womenswear line, I was rather excited. Not excited in the way that Miu Miu’s glitter boots send me into total sartorial meltdown, or in the same way that the fashion world is waiting to hear who’s replacing Galliano, but in a way that I’m utterly intrigued and entertained by the idea that a jumped-up hip hop star who likes floor-length fur coats and excessive bling could make a go of it in another competitive creative industry. Of course I had my doubts – one only has to look at Lindsay Lohan’s disastrous streak at Emanuel Ungaro to see that celebrity lines are ill-fated – but I also had hopes of having another Victoria Beckham surprise that sent the industry spinning on the very tables it turns on. And so it was that Kanye West presented his first fashion collection at Paris Fashion Week on Saturday. He chose Lycée Henri IV, the prestigious public secondary school in the capital’s Latin quarter, to debut his designs, and invited an impressive list of no more than 100 guests who would sit on two single rows either side of the runway. For all Kanye’s egotistical ways, it was a humble beginning to his career in fashion, and had his collection lived up to the calibre of its high-profile audience – Anna Wintour, Carine Roitfeld, Alexander Wang, Ciara and the Olsen twins all sat front row – this could have been quite the fashion moment. Unfortunately, Kanye’s collection was everything it shouldn’t have been, but it wasn’t without effort. The hip-hop star – a regular fashion front-rower and fan, let’s not forget – seeked advice from London designer Louise Goldin after his attempt to enrole at Central Saint Martins […]

London Fashion Week SS12: Topshop Unique

Who: Topshop Unique What: Ancient Eygpt, via the street style of the urban Nineties ghetto. Highlights: Gold everything, from prints to embellishment and leaf-capped hair. Lowlights: It’s a hard collection to pull off for your average fashion fan. Overall: Ancient Egypt and the urban Ninties hip hop scene aren’t two historical eras on the timeline we’d expect to come together, but where Topshop Unique is concerned, it’s really best not to have any expectations at all. Actually, you’d be surprised just how well oversized sporty streetwear and abstract hieroglyphic prints work. Jersey cropped joggers and sweaters are exaggerated and relaxed, and as street as we’ve come to expect from Unique, but they’re splashed with brash graffiti-like hieroglyphic prints. The occasional full-skirted dress or flared skirt gave way to a more refined edge, but the underlying street signs didn’t wane as ghetto gold motifs of coiled snakes and scareb beetles reflecting the opulence of Ancient Egypt appeared on everything from slouchy separates to tube dresses and a pretty pink pleated skirt. Gold was the order of the day, it seems, covering everything from foil bustiers to hotpants and models’ hair. Monochrome was also prevalent, particularly effective in an enlarged Elizabeth Taylor Cleopatra print, as were jewel tones in turquoise and watermelon. Glamorous and ghetto-fabulous, Unique’s spring 2012 collection is a contemporary pharoah party, with the likes of Anna Wintour, Naomi Campbell and Olivia Palermo filling the dancefloor.
