The 2012 Independent Spirit Awards: The best dressed

Oscars, they may not be, but that doesn’t mean the outfits worn on the red carpet were any less exciting. In fact, a few of the looks worn at the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards were far better received at MFL HQ than some of those from yesterday’s Academy Awards. Is it because the attendees are so desperate to get it right on the Oscars red carpet that they hold back or play it safe?

Glow in the dark denim: do you dare?

Denim can never be praised enough. It’s fashion’s most loved staple, with an evergreen presence and the advantage of being the only item of clothing which looks increasingly beautiful with each wear. Being fashion’s chameleon means a constant overhaul for this beloved fabric; be it sequins and safety pins á la Balmain or a high-waisted and flared Seventies affair as copiously witnessed last season. But having seen the well-behaved and sexed-up guises of denim, nothing quite matched the reaction evoked in us by the outlandish invention from cult denim label Naked & Famous. Hailing from Toronto, Naked & Famous specialise in ‘rare and raw Japanese denim’, and if the Far East is anything to go by for introducing innovative techniques and trailblazing trends, Naked & Famous have excelled. The Canadian label, you see, brings us glow in the dark jeans. Injecting a bit of Christopher Kane’s Princess Margaret on acid into the emblem of contemporary dressing is a brave feat. Although we’re not rushing to sideline our J Brand favourites just yet, the concept of seeing somebody – all hips gyrating to Swedish House Mafia – in a club, donning a pair of these fluorescent fancies dipped in glow in the dark resin coating is most definitely a novel concept. The catch? They’re only available for men at the moment, but if this season’s androgynous trend is anything to go by, you can definitely justify stealing them from your guy. And for the art enthusiasts among us who wish to invest in a timeless piece, a few wears into the Naked & Famous creation and you’ll begin to notice wear patterns as the coating fades in certain areas, leaving you the proud artist and owner of a custom pair. Convinced yet?

AW 11 Trend Recap: Romanticised Fetish & Subtle Androgyny

Fetish If bold hues and saturated prints sent your pulses racing during spring/summer 2011, brace yourself and prepare to be doused in the sexier side of fashion. Fetishism’s were a seductively tantalising visual for autumn/winter 2011, as we saw designers so skilfully display the romanticised side of this extreme ‘sport’ into their collections. Sweet nothings were whispered at Christopher Kane, Dior and Louis Vuitton with delicate sheer inserts contrasted against stark black, whilst a lacier affair delighted at Lanvin and Antonio Berardi. But this bondage inspired look wouldn’t be complete without a touch of slick black PVC and leather as seen at Etro and Ralph Lauren. If innuendo were a dress, this would be it. Androgyny They may be impossible to live with, but the boys are being generous this season and letting us borrow from their wardrobes. Nothing brought a more mastered masculine touch than autumn/winter 2011’s softly-softly take on sharp tailoring. Injected with sexy, feminine accents in the form of sparkly trousers at Michael Kors and plunging necklines at Balmain and Chanel, tuxedos were the template. Totally transformed, with embellished lapels at Dolce & Gabbana; cropped tux jackets at The Row; rounded tailcoats at Moschino and a prevalently monochrome palette; this really is the best of both worlds.

Anya Hindmarch’s Valorie Gold Glitter Clutch: Glittery gorgeousness

Enter the Anya Hindmarch Valorie Gold Glitter Clutch and try not to drop whatever you may be holding (especially if it’s your child). This stylish clutch is now signature for the designer Anya Hindmarch, and it is easy to understand why. It is exceptionally understated in its timeless form and style, yet classically appealing with its Hollywood metallic glamour and glitz. Yet I can’t help feeling torn over it and its accompanying price tag. Once again it’s that battle between head and heart. My head says: So, £225 may seem like a small amount to pay (in comparison to many designer clutches) for an iconic piece of signature Hindmarch, and our love of gold is very unlikely to sway in the future, but I just can’t help thinking that you might be able to find something equally as stunning on the high-street. Now don’t get me wrong, to receive this as a present would be immensely pleasing, but to purchase it out of my own money, when £200 more could buy something that would actually fit my day-to-day life in it and I could use it every day, could seem slightly rash. My heart says: This accessory would be the perfect accompaniment to any evening outfit. When I think about pieces from Balmain, Stella McCartney, and Alexander McQueen even, I can see that this clutch would work with anything and everything from my wardrobe and anything and everything on my imaginary fashion wish-list. And it’s just so GLITTERY and girly. It’s every girls dream, literally. It’s possibly even the Cinderella of clutches. ‘Where’s my credit card… (hunting around in bag)…no one shall stop me…I SHALL purchase this clutch. £225 is literally a bargain!’ Conclusion: So, is it an investment? I think it just might be. Anya Hindmarch’s Valorie Gold Glitter […]

An open letter to Kristen Stewart, re: jeans at premier

Ok, Kristen, we know that you like being effortlessly cool, we know you’re the star of Twilight, you’ve bagged Robert Pattinson and you prefer to keep it low key, but here’s our gripe: that doesn’t mean you can wear a T-shirt and jeans to a premier. Sure, the red carpet may not have always been your friend, but you pulled Balmain off not so long ago, so what’s the deal? Thing is, anywhere else we’d have loved your look – slouchy tee nonchalantly tucked into cropped skinnies? Great. Satin heels and blow dry for a touch of luxe? Love it! But you’re at a film premiere, and we don’t get to go to those things, so at least give us some glam to look at. We don’t expect a smile, but a flash of leg wouldn’t have gone amiss. What do you think of Kristen’s causal look? Would you dare to wear jeans on the red carpet? [poll id=”147″]

Beyonce’s busting out the designer labels in Paris

If you didn’t know Paris was the style capital of the world, you could have made a darn good guess after Beyonce’s visit last week. On a brief break in the City of Light with hubby Jay-Z, the couple made more than their fair share of rare public appearances doing regular things like eating and shopping, but they mixed it with some irregular stuff that only the rich can do like wear a different designer outfit every day from collections that aren’t even available yet and pose for upcoming issues of fashion glossies (she’s wearing Gucci for Harper’s Bazaar above, FYI). Good old Bey, when she’s back, she sure as hell lets you know it. See below for five of the fab outfits she showcased on her trip, and tell us which is your favourite look in the poll below. Isabel Marant AW10 We already raved about Beyonce’s printed silk dress from Isabel Marant’s AW10 collection, which she expertly paired with McQueen fishbone platforms and a black crocodile Balmain bag, but it’s well worth a second mention here. Roland Mouret Next outing, next outfit, this time a black dungaree romper by Roland Mouret teamed with artfully messy hair and a pair of strappy platforms for a chic stroll along the streets. Marc Jacobs AW11 Taking a decidedly lady-like direction, Bey opted for a green and red polka dot dress from Marc Jacobs’ AW11 collection to celebrate Easter, this time swapping statement footwear for a pair of classic Louboutin pumps and her trusty Balmain bag. Isabel Marant AW11 Another look from Isabel Marant, this time a dusty pink leather jacket from the French label’s AW11 collection that she teamed with casual cargo shorts and those Daffodil Louboutins for a sleek everyday look (save the 6.5 inch heels). Balmain Probably our least […]

What to wear this Valentine’s Day

After the January slump, there’s always that sense of relief when February finally arrives. ‘Hurrah, January is over!’ we cheer, as we get back into the swing of work and start counting down the days to the ever-looming Fashion Week. And then we remember that February is the month of Valentine’s Day. Whether we’re loved-up or not, February 14th seems to send the nation into frenzy. We go into panic mode about what exactly we should do to mark the occasion, what gifts we should buy and ,of course , what on earth we should be wearing. The supposed most romantic night of the year, suddenly , and bizarrely – becomes one of the more stressful holidays… For those that choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day (or actively rebel against it for that matter), we have come up with a few outfit suggestions to make preparations for the nation’s ‘date night’ that little bit easier. We’ve selected some of our favourite items as inspiration for your own Valentine’s outfit. Having picked out clothes suitable for a daytime date, a romantic evening or a night out with the girls, we think we’ve got all areas covered… The Lunch Date Outfit One: It is probably most difficult to think of the perfect outfit for the daytime date. Will you be going out for a posh lunch? Meeting for a couple of drinks? Taking part in a fun and spontaneous outdoor activity? Either way, it’s still cold out there, so we think smart layering is the way forward. Skinny jeans are always a winner in our book, so why not update the look for spring with these platform clogs from KG by Kurt Geiger. Team with an oversized cardigan, like this kimono from Bess and a neutral scarf from Therapy for a casual, yet […]

Top 5 sequin party picks

The festive season just wouldn’t be complete without a sprinkle of sequins now, would it? Last year saw stores decorated with an abundance of the metallic shine that we are so easily drawn to and this winter it seems that little has changed. As long-time sequin lovers, we are certainly not complaining. See below for designers that embraced the sparkle, and our top 5 picks for festive sequin dressing: 3.1 Philip Lim Some of the most memorable pieces from Phillip Lim’s collection were those showered with gold sequins, which makes his fall collection one of MFL’s favourites. Lim’s wearable look teamed sequins with short hemlines and tailored trousers. The perfect take on sexy androgyny. Matthew Williamson Matthew Williamson went down an alternative route, discovering boho bling with his sequinned maxi dress. A surprising success, Williamson managed to apply his colour techniques to the material, creating a gorgeous mix of gold and blue. Whoever knew sequins could go sienna style? Balmain Not for the faint-hearted, Balmain’s teeny tiny dresses have caused quite a stir , or rather, ‘Balmania’ , among fashionistas. Loud and proud (although not to the extent of Ashish’s neon, sequinned, animal print trousers) was the name of the game for Christophe Decarnin this season, with a range of look-at-me body-con pieces ready for that 80s disco. Like the rest of the world, I too was shocked and sad to hear the news about the sudden death of Michael Jackson yesterday. Michael was just as much an icon for the fashion industry as he was for music. If there’s anything we can learn from the King of Pop when it comes to personal style, it is to “be yourself”. From his elaborate stage costumes to his eccentric day to day outfits, there’s no denying that Jacko had fun with fashion. Here are some of his trademark looks that we’ve come to know and love him for:

Is Aquascutum due a re-invention?

In times of uncertainty, people traditionally look to the familiar for comfort. It’s almost a primal urge – one that is with us from childhood where we choose our favourite blanket/teddy bear right through to adulthood with carbohydrates and trashy predictable TV and romcoms. But comfort and fashion are not often bedfellows. In fact, if anything, the collective uncertainty brought about by the recession has pushed our tastes to the extreme. Extreme shoes with platform heels that verge on bondage wear; skirts with padded hips and huge shoulder pads to create an almost cartoon-like silhouette; expensive denim distressed and faded to within an inch of its life and treggings, a ridiculously named item of clothing tat will forever polarise opinion.

Michael Jackson, Givenchy, and Stardust: The King of Pop Turns Androgynous

My present thinking wouldn’t regard Michael Jackson as much of a fashion-forward chap. These days, I’m more concerned with the King of Pop melting under the sweltering sun of Dubai as his Botox infused visage struggles to hold itself together. However, judging by Jackson’s recent head-to-toe Givenchy womenswear getup, it seems like the King of Pop is back to his good ol’ “Beat It” best! Based on recent sightings, it’s no secret that Jackson is trying to relive his trendsetter days. After being seen cavorting about in a svelte Balmain t-shirt from the label’s AW09 womenswear collection, recent snapshots show Jackson in a piece for piece rendition of an AW07 stardust-inspired Givenchy look that Gemma Ward wore. Interestingly, closer observation of Jackson’s lapel in comparison to Ward’s shows adjustments were made to tone down the femininity of the initial jacket.
