Achieving great lengths: Why the mini skirt is a must-have fashion item

Skirts. We can never have too many, but rather interestingly, the varying styles and lengths have significantly defined perceived conceptions of the ‘new women’ and femininity. From the 1920s beaded flapper, flirty 50s circle or late 90s grungy denim, skirts have been just as influential on culture as they have our style. One skirt that shook up modern cultures, along with our desire for the perfect pins, is the mini skirt. Making waves in the 60s, the design freed young women from the historical convention of dressing in the style of their mothers. As British youths began to demand their own identity, a young political entity gained a voice and created a new and distinctive fashion that embodied their own political views – this is why the mini skirt is a must-have fashion item; it signifies a point in time where women were given the choice to dress exactly how they wanted. Championed by creative types such as Mary Quant and Twiggy in the 60s, it became mainstream in the 80s and even office-wear in the 90s. However, if worn wrong, you can cross the line of feminism loving fashionista into dangerous Christina Aguilera ‘Dirty’ territory. So, what’s the best way to wear a mini today? Firstly, with confidence; feeling comfortable in your own skin is the first step to feeling beautiful in your clothing. If you’re a little shy of your legs, try some fun exercise to boost morale and tone your pins. Dancing is a great way to achieve limb-perfection. After all, have you ever seen a dancer with bad legs? Zumba is a high-adrenaline way of sculpting legs Naomi Campbell will be jealous of. Simply find a class near you here, get a decent pair of dance shoes from an expert retailer like Dancemania and get the […]

Highlights from the Jimmy Choo prefall 2014 press day

Tube strikes? Ha, we laugh in the face of tube strikes – nothing, and we really do mean nothing – can stand in  the way of us heading to Jimmy Choo HQ in London’s Victoria and drooling over staring at the brand spanking new prefall 2014 collection. And the Jimmy Choo.08 collection, to use its full and proper name,  really was brand spanking new, as we saw styles we hadn’t really seen from the English brand before – and that’s largely thanks to creative director Sandra Choi’s new vision. “I love feminine silhouettes, and Jimmy Choo has become synonymous with the iconic stiletto which we continue to reinterpret with every collection ,” said creative director Sandra Choi. “I know, from my own busy life, and from speaking to other women, that we also crave the same glamour and attitude in shoes that we can run around in all day, which is why I created the CHOO.08 mood.” Glamorous, feminine shoes with bags of attitude are exactly what we saw before us in the stunning showroom, each piece fiercer and more covetable than the last, if you can believe it. Perfect for the modern woman on the go, the collection keeps up with her fast paced yet ultra glamorous life; flats, trainers (and we do love a good Jimmy Choo trainer!), sandals and the sparkliest heels imaginable, this collection has it all! Flats and sparkles Prints and vivid colours Comfy flats and bold trainers   Wow factor “look at me” shoes and accessories

Steep vs. Cheap: Printed Trousers

Hey spring, we see you! Well, sort of. Whether you’re looking to go all-out, or to curb your spending habit, this week’s options are guaranteed to make you part with that hard-earned cash. Did someone say investment? Yep. 7 fab Fashion Month essentials!

For some people, February is all about Valentine’s Day, but for all the budding fashionistas in the world, the month of Feb is all about fashion. New York Fashion Week, London Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week – all four cities which have their own distinctive and irreplaceable style! So, dressing for Fashion Month – regardless of the city or how much show-watching you’ll actually be doing – has to be done right. You need to get the dressing for the chill and dressing stylishly balance just right. We think we’ve got it sorted with our seven suggestions below; what say you? 1. Ah the great Fashion Week footwear dilemma! Do you go for sky high heels to complement your cute dress and to be the same height as the rest of the ladies and models or do you go for comfort? Nine times out of 10 we would have gone for the former, but since flat shoes are loved by the likes of Alexa Chung and Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, we think we’re going to go for flats this season. Plus just think how warm these boots will be? 2. The bag is probably one of the most important accessories. If you’re a high fashion magazine editor, a celebrity or someone who won’t be working at Fashion Week, by all means go for an adorable little clutch bag that fits a mobile phone and extra lippie – especially if you’re being chauffeured around from show to show. But for the rest of us who have to slum it and walk to shows, a good sized bag to fit everything from iPads to chargers to make-up bags to an extra pair of flats to food (yes we all need to refuel between shows) is absolutely vital! 3. Givenchy studded lace oxfords: Yay or Nay?

With spring slowly creeping upon us, lusting after somewhat impractical shoes is a given. And, this week we’re digging these lush Givenchy studded lace oxfords (£904). Not quite up there with our wear-everyday foot gear just yet, but nevertheless, gorgeous enough to gawk at! Bringing you well and truly out of winter’s dull grip, the striking effect of polished silver studs against angelic white lace and a solid wooden sole gives these Givenchy oxfords immediate buy-me-now appeal, but will you take the plunge? Here’s a little helping hand if you’re stuck on parting with the pounds… Yay Spring-perfect: A great option if you’re looking to update your new season wardrobe by way of statement-making shoes, without committing to a trend. Flats: Well, traipsing around in heels all day isn’t the most foot-friendly of options. Your feet will be utterly grateful for the style and comfort factor rolled into one! Boy-meets-girls: The ever-present androgynous trend shows no sign of waning, and we’re certainly not complaining. These Givenchy oxfords are the perfect mid-way fix for girls who love boyish style. Nay Colour: White. Need we say more? Price: Sitting smug at £904, you’ll have pretty feet, post-purchase. Shame the same can’t be said for your finances… Impractical option: Although they come with a stiff mesh lining to help maintain the shape, lace-enveloped shoes were never a good idea for protecting your feet. Suddenly, puddles and unpredictable downpours will become your worst enemies. Givenchy studded lace oxfords, £904, available at My Theresa.

Banana Republic collaborates with Marimekko for limited edition capsule collection

We were suitably blown away with the Banana Republic x L’Wren Scot collaboration (mainly because the pieces could have come straight out of a L’Wren Scott lookbook!) but now it looks like Banana Republic has another partnership in the works. Banana Republic has joined forces with Finnish brand Marimekko for a limited edition capsule collection of women’s clothes and accessories, and from what we can see in the pic above, it’s going to be a good’un! “The stunning thing about Marimekko is that everyone has heard of it or has had some history with it because of the beautiful prints,” said Melloney Birkett, a spokesperson for Banana Republic. Key pieces of the collection include classic Banana Republic Hampton pants in a Marimekko inspired black and white polka dot pattern, bold printed zip clutches, polka dot ballet flats, and a dramatic full skirt which, if you cast your minds back to a few weeks ago, we told you was one of the ultimate spring/summer pieces to own. We can expect the collection, priced between $39.40 and $149, to drop in stores worldwide and online from May. What do you think of the first look above? [Fashion Times]

Trend alert: Grunge!

If you paid attention to some of the biggest spring/summer 2014 catwalk shows, then you’ll already know that grunge is making a huge comeback for the new season. Hedi Slimane was all about grunge and rock ‘n’ roll for the Saint Laurent spring/summer 2014 show, and Marc Jacobs also went dark and alternative for his final Louis Vuitton collection. (A great way to bow out, don’t you think?) So, with two of the biggest fashion players championing the trend, we have every reason to get behind it too! We’ve already seen the celebs try their hand at the grunge trend by incorporating certain aspects into their red carpet outfits and as they go about their everyday lives, and now you can get in on the trend too with these very basic items. 1. Our top pick for going grunge is a leather jacket. Nothing says attitude better than a fierce bit of leather draped across your shoulders, and this Christopher Kane jacket is the perfect hue to wear over the rest of your black clothes and accessories. Christopher Kane cracked leather biker jacket, £2,490 £871.50 2. Make your eyes stand out by lining them with the darkest and boldest hue of black eyeliner you can find. Yves Saint Laurent black eyeliner, £24 3. A great thing about the grunge trend is being able to wear flats; black leather boots will not only convey attitude, but you’ll be super warm and comfy in the process too. You can be bad-ass without putting your feet through hell, too! Dune Black leather biker boots, £195 4. The more studs and spikes in your accessories, the better! This clutch bag pretty much has it all, doesn’t it? Pierre Balmain studded clutch, £593.91 £386.04 5. A band tee is the final step to completing your […]

Are Crocs finally getting their fashion moment?

Could Crocs finally be getting their fashion moment? Bear with us… Colorado based company Crocs Inc has probably realised that the plastic colorful shoes aren’t, to put it nicely, the first choice of footwear for fashionistas… but it’s hoping to change all that by producing a classier and more sophisticated range of shoes marketed under designer Stefano Furiani’s name. “Our vision is to set new expectations in product creation using mixed materials in unexpected ways, but inspiring ways,” said Crocs designer Stefano Furiani. “The Furiani line is curatorial footwear – product with clearly defined and coherent contemporary art themes coupled with true innovation and artistic impact.” The new Stefano Furiani Collection will include career pumps, flats, mules and ankle-strap thongs, all of which will come in a variety of different colours, with the Croslite footbeds found in the plastic originals still being a prominent feature. To further distance itself from the existing Crocs collection, the range won’t be sold alongside current products, or even on the same website or store, so the synergy between the two will be almost minimal. We’re willing to give them a chance based on the teaser pics above; will you? [Fashion Times]

Isabel Marant Holden sandals: Yay or Nay?

Spent the holiday season stuck in heels? Are the balls of your feel crying out in again, begging for a break from the four inchers sat in your shoe closet? If so, then cast your eyes on this week’s Yay or Nay shoe, because there’s not a platform or kitten heel in sight! Enter the Holden leather sandals by Isabel Marant. Better known for her sell-out wedge sneakers, Marant has worked her magic in fashion’s newly favoured ‘ugly shoe’ department, and the result? Uber-comfy, quilted leather sandals perfect for your next sunny venture. But, would you dare slip into them? Check out our reasons for saying Yay and Nay to a heel detox (yup, that’s a thing) below: Yay Your podiatrist would be proud: Given the health benefits often associated with wearing heels are few; a heel detox is just what the doctor podiatrist ordered. Comfort never looked so good. Great price: At £280, although not the cheapest in te market, the Holden sandal has decent price point for high-end leather. Carry-through trend: After Phoebe Philo made it OK to shamelessly wear furry Birkenstocks, the surge in ‘ugly shoes’ has been impressive, and is still going strong. Heels? What heels? Nay Not weather-proof: Well, given we’re battling unpredictable weather this side of the pond for most of the year, making a splash in the Holden sandals, or risking frostbite, is the last thing your feet will want. Lazy effort: As much as we love the comfort factor these sandals offer, the casual factor may just go too far. Paired with tailored wool trousers in a glossy editorial, they may look the bomb, but in reality, you risk dirty looks from you boss for wearing these to the office in the name of “fashion.” Permanent pedicures: We can all admit to […]

Alexa Chung’s debut clothing line is launching next year!

We have many reasons to look forward to the new year, and one of them is definitely the arrival of style maven and it girl (just don’t call her an it girl to her face) Alexa Chung‘s debut fashion collection. We don’t know exactly what her fashion collection will entail just yet, and it doesn’t sound like she does either… “I need some time to think about it,” she said. “2014 is going to be the first opportunity where I haven’t had a nine-to-five job. I’ve kind of been doing Eyeko, I wrote a book, I did Fuse every day, and various other design gigs and DJing. So this will be the first time to actually sort of sit down and think about it.” We want her to come out with a cracking collection, but we hope she doesn’t take too much time working on it because we can’t wait to see it. We hope to see lots of cute flats, printed knits and dungarees in true Alexa style! [Vogue]

Michelle Dockery talks ageing, stability and karaoke in InStyle UK January

We’re not going to lie, as much as we are looking forward to putting our feet up, arguing over who gets to be the racecar in Monopoly and stuffing our faces with all eight courses of Christmas dinner, the thing we are most excited about this festive season is the Downton Abbey Christmas Special. And speaking of Downton Abbey, Lady Mary, aka Michelle Dockery, has found herself on the cover of InStyle UK’s January issue. Isn’t it good how everything ties together so nicely? Michelle talks to the mag about the ageing process, karaoke, and the stability being on Downton has given her… “It’s a very solid and successful job; it just gives you that sense of security, I guess,” she said. “I mean, I own a flat now. I worked out I moved 16 times from the age of 19, just hopping about from different flats, because I couldn’t always afford to stay. It’s lovely to feel stability.” To see some seriously gorgeous pics like the one above and find out what her ultimate karaoke tracks are (hint: one of them is a real power ballad!) make sure you pick up the January issue of InStyle UK – out now!

Classy Comfort: Stylish Ways to Wear High Waisted Jeans

If you are a woman that keeps up with fashion trends, you know that fashion loves to go retro. These revised retro looks bring a piece of fashion history into the modern fashion world. One such piece of fashion history is the high waist jean design. High waist jeans can be very attractive, providing a unique appeal in comparison to other styles of jeans. The challenge is knowing how to wear these type of jeans. When it comes to low rise jeans, it is obvious that they are meant to provide the opportunity to show off a little midriff. Traditional cut jeans are designed to be versatile. With high waist jeans, you can easily lose the intent of the design. High waist jeans are designed to accent a thin waistline, or in some cases, create the appearance of a thinner waistline. How you wear high waist jeans will determine whether you get all that you can out of them. A simple rule of thumb is not to completely cover the waistline with full length blouses. Multiple Styles The versatility of high waist jeans doesn’t stop at the waist line. According to A Model Recommends, there are numerous styles to choose from. Depending on your particular body style, you can choose form straight cut, boot cut or the ever popular skinny cut. Skinny jeans seem to be the go to style of jeans for most women these days. The truth is they are not the best look for every type of body style. For instance, petite women actually look better in straight cut jeans. Straight cut jeans are actually characterized by falling straight down from the knees to the floor. Although natural rationale might suggest that skinny jeans would be perfect for petite women, the truth is that they make petite […]

Anna Kendrick is Worst Dressed of the Week in Alberta Ferretti

You know that gutting feeling you get, when a show-stopping runway look just doesn’t translate so brilliantly in real life? Yeah, that. And, sadly, we’re suffering from a serious case of it this week. Disappointing us in a runway-to-real-life situation this week is Anna Kendrick, who took to the red carpet for the screening of Drinking Buddies during the 57th BFI London Film Festival, earlier this week, in a spring/summer 2014 Alberta Ferretti skirt and crop top ensemble. Although the floral wash has winter bloom appeal, the runway look was by far our favourite; a slice of midriff was on show, whilst ribbon-tie flats and drop earrings in vibrant orange sealed the sartorial deal. OK, we get it, we know. The model on the runway, what with her endless legs and Amazonian glow, was bound to look impeccable. But on Anna, the look just didn’t sit right. The full-bodied A-line skirt we love, but the crop top fell awkwardly on the waist band, concealing the waist-cinching effect of the skirt. The simple black pumps and matching clutch go well with the bold look, but we’re digging a little more midriff display! Top marks for hair and make-up, though. What do you think? Is our WDOTW a fair decision? [Image: Zimbio]

Clemence Poesy does simple chic on Chanel FROW

A little simplicity can go a long, long way. And Clemence Poesy arriving at the Chanel show during Paris Fashion Week to take her rightful place on the front row is poof of that. The gorgeous French actress looked incredible in a simple pair of rolled up blue jeans, a black top, black flats and a chic Chanel boucle jacket. Just goes to show that investing in a “statement” piece, in this case the Chanel jacket, can transform even the simplest and most casual of outfits into something wow-worthy. She definitely dressed circles around the other frow-ers which says a lot considering the likes of Rita Ora and Katy Perry were also in attendance. Clemence completed her flawless look by wearing her hair in some glamorous tumbling waves, going for subtle make-up and of course, an essential black Chanel bag.

Sienna Miller vs. Isla Fisher…Who wore Dolce & Gabbana better?

We challenge you to track down a dress by the Dolce boys that fails to send hearts aflutter! The latest two ladies, one dress situation making us swoon over lashings of signature lace and floral print comes courtesy of red carpet darlings Sienna Miller and Isla Fisher. First up to slip into the pretty-sexy gown was Isla Fisher, who took to the red carpet for the world premiere of The Great Gatsby back in May. Accessorising with a Roger Vivier clutch and her trademark strawberry blonde barnet, swept elegantly to one side; a slick of red on the lips completed Isla’s stunning look. But catching up in the style stakes was Brit lady Sienna Miller, who sported a midi version of the same gown to celebrate The Global Fun at the Aspley House, last month. Carrying a leopard print box clutch, and ditching heels for pointed slingback flats, Sienna’s look was topped of with nude makeup, and her famed mussed up glossy hair, worn casually down. So, whose look is a winner? The gown-cum-dress in question is quite an eye-pleasing creation to stare at all day long, but we’re going to give the style cred to Isla on this one. There’s something sensuous about the longer length, and we love Isla’s overall styling. But Sienna’s flat shoe choice lets the whole dress down, and we all know a sexy Dolce number always needs standout heels to accompany it! Agree with our style verdict? Whose look do you prefer? Tell us your thoughts below. [Images: Zimbio]

Take a fashion forward step with statement shoes!

Shoe lovers everywhere will agree that a pair of statement shoes are the ideal accessory to elevate any outfit from standard to head turning. Whether they’re an eye catching colour or feature intricate detailing or bold prints, shoes have the power to transform. Consider a plain outfit consisting of black cigarette pants and a loose fitting black shirt – add a pair of statement shoes such as leopard print flats, coral courts, embellished wedges or luxurious slippers and you’ll have a great look. For statement shoe inspiration check out a few celebrities whom we think have got it just right…. Laura Whitmore has emerged as a style icon with an edge over the past few years, teaming unusual items together but always carrying it off. Here she’s complemented a white button down shirt and shorts with skyscraper leopard print boots. We love them and the shade looks great with her blonde hair and that cool satchel. Anne Hathaway is quite a classic dresser, most often opting for simple and chic styles, so it’s refreshing to see her add a bit of spice with these gorgeous tangerine courts. They add interest to an otherwise low key outfit, and the combination of pale pink lace with loud shoes looks great. Cameron Diaz is a fan of skin-tight outfits which show off her athletic frame. These interesting tied blue shoes are a great colour on her tanned legs, and clash brilliantly with her red nail varnish and lipstick. Kate Bosworth is a real style chameleon, switching from haute couture chic to Coachella hippy easily. We love this combination of sleek nude dress and eye catching red wedges. The colours blend well and a bit of matching red lipstick ties the whole look together. The ultimate fashion icon, Sarah Jessica Parker never looks the […]

London Fashion Week SS14 Day 5 highlights

London Fashion Week may be over for another season, leaving us dreaming about next summer, but it’s onto Milan and Paris! So, to keep the London style spirit alive a little bit longer, here are our highlights from the final day of fashion fun: Thomas Tait Practicality is never lost on some in the fashion world, and CSM-trained designer Thomas Tait is one who never leaves behind is original vision. Although the colours on the runway for next season have served as palate cleansers, Tait’s angelic whites were too luminous to miss. Clean, fluid dresses, tank tops boxy jackets and were crossed with carefully positioned embellishments in the form of vividly coloured panels and wisps of feathers, but the originality of his hard working aesthetic, those any- weather-tackling, utilitarian jackets was not lost. Tait fans were surely not disappointed. Ong-Oaj Paraim Another one to watch from budding pool of emerging fashion talent this season, we loved Ong-Oaj Pairam’s debut offerings – inspired by Gertie, from Stephen Spielberg’s blockbuster,  E.T. – at Fashion Scout. Vague imprints of yolk-centred flowers were sprayed across billowing maxi dresses, while the flowers came to life in 3D form on a patent white skirt. A patent-sleeved cropped jacket with metallic checker board body was paired with leather shorts in a foamy cappuccino hue, and hair was coiffed to the tune of tea dress swishing, fashion-loving, Fifties housewife. Cinched waists were high on the agenda, with plenty of belting and body contouring dresses to boots, and a broken down Chinese calligraphic-style print in red and blue, neatly ruled out on a sheer collared shirt and high-waisted shorts. A fantastic introduction to his vision and style ability, this ex-Proenza Schouler assistant is sure to stay on our runway radar. Simone Rocha She’s fast climbed the ranks to become one […]

A fashion resurrection…

Since 2010, the fashion-conscious have started adopting a footwear brand once banished to the realm of toddlers and OAPs. But thanks to being stocked by some of the hottest high-street retailers, Clarks, have become a firm fixture on the most stylish lists. Spotted on the feet of celebrities such as Florence Welsh and Robert Pattison, the brand has gained some major fashion points; the Clarks Desert boot has become a style staple for both men and women. Plus, reggae artist Vybz Kartel even wrote a song about his love for the brand, causing a huge sales increase in Jamaica. Launching their Clarks UK lines into shops such as Brantano and Urban Outfitters, more and more retailers are picking-up the brand for winter. However, despite this current ‘cool’ resurgence, Clarks have no makeover or rebranding plans and will stay humble, continuing to make high quality footwear for all and they have since 1825. Recent collections have been doing well, with several lines selling out rather quickly. And it’s the brogues and boots that are particularly eye catching; adding simple details with comfort being central to every shoes construction, Clarks have provided some excellent winter staples that will see you through for years. Made to be worn with cute ankle socks and distressed jeans, the Katelina Bay Ankle Boot is a sleek design in a buttery soft black suede. The 3 ½ inch heel is comfortable enough to ensure you can get out and about during the day in comfort, and add some desired height and glamour for an evening out. Looking far more expensive than the £60 price tag, the boots are a classic, well-constructed design right down to the subtle dark metal side zip detail, all too often made tacky and garish by other brands. Steep vs. Cheap: Jacquard trousers

Thinking of ditching the done-too-many-times before dress for a night out, and slipping into something a little different? Let this week’s steep vs. cheap guide tempt you into doing just that. A tailored trouser is the ideal investment for office or play, and, depending on the style and fabric, its styling potential is big. This week, we’ve fallen just a little bit in love with the new season’s most in demand colour: ice cream pink. And worked over with a lustrous jacquard finish – we’re sold! Coming in at the slightly pricey end this week is J.Crew’s Collection capri trouser in gilded jacquard, at £211. Already suckers for Jenna Lyons’ boy-meets-polished-girl style, this primly cut trouser has strengthened our obsession with the brand! Worn with a denim shirt and flats for downtime cool, or dressed up with a slinky black cami and heels, this trouser is guaranteed to become your most prized purchase of the year. But if you’re craving all that shimmery goodness and don’t want to take out a loan with the ‘rents, then look to Glamourous.com, where you can pick up an equally gorgeous pair of similar trews for a fraction of the price. Parting with £39 sounds a lot sweeter than £211, right? So which one will it be? The pocket-breaking or penny-saving pant?

Moschino Cheap and Chic printed skirt: Yay or Nay?

OK, so the season has been about the statement sweatshirt or bold tee, but we’re shaking things up a bit. Moving your eyes from the sweat to the skirt, we’ve picked out quite the eye-opener for this week’s Yay or Nay. Enter the Moschino Cheap and Chic pink and black wool-blend felt skirt (£230). Yep, quite the mouthful, and pretty heavy on the eyes, too! The painterly logo print makes for a bold look against the bubblegum pink background (so new season), and we think it’s the perfect piece for pepping up a simple party outfit. Ensure to keep the rest of your outfit neutral, as the skirt works best paired with a simple tee, heels and a clutch night. Or, inject some fun into a day look by pairing with a black turtleneck sweater and flats. But wait! Before whipping out the plastic and submitting your bank balance to another (regular) ‘cleanse’, check out how we’re going about rationalising the purchase of this kooky little number, below. Yay New season colour: Pink is the hottest story of AW13, and this skirt is a great way to dip into the trend. Price: Neatly priced at £230, it won’t necessarily leave you in a state of financial ruin, and still leave spare change for that cheeky (extra) pair of heels you’ve been eyeing up! Easy party investment: Making life easier when heading for night in the town, this zero-effort skirt won’t need much else. Its bold existence is quite enough, so keep the rest of your look muted.  Nay Loud print: As much as it’s a good thing when looking to turn heads with your brazen approach to skirt shopping, if you sense this trippy thigh-skimmer landing in the one-wear-then despair pile, thanks to its megaphonic logo print, forget it. Dry […]

Crushing on Olivia Palermo’s casual chic NYC style

If we looked as chic and expertly styled as Olivia Palermo when we were just going about our day to day business, we would be very happy bunnies indeed. Olivia looked nothing short of fabulous when minding her own business on the streets of New York the other day. The bronzed American goddess exuded sartorial confidence in her casual but oh-so-chic ensemble which comprised of some pink shorts, a very on-trend denim shirt cinched in with a fun belt, and comfortable colourful flats. And of course an essential pair of dark sunglasses to keep out the sun and nosey paps. But those just aren’t any old pair of black sunnies, oh no. Olivia was wearing none other than Westward \\ Leaning ‘Children Of California’ sunglasses with reclaimed Californian Redwood. And for every pair of Westward \\ Leaning sunglasses that are sold, $10 will be donated to educational programs related to the specific style purchased. The proceeds for Olivia’s ‘Children Of California’ style sunnies go to Teach for America in San Francisco. So, should you choose to snap them up for yourself, you’ll not only have one more thing in common with the style maven that is Miss Olivia Palermo, but you’ll be contributing to a truly worthwhile cause too. Win, win!

Down to a T: 5 statement t-shirts and 3 distressed jeans you need right now!

Much like wondering at Proenza without Schouler, at Felder without, well, Felder and at Dolce without Gabbana, we can’t imagine a better pairing than the ultimate wardrobe essentials: jeans and a t-shirt. Although this heavenly mix may be your go-to kit for casual dressing, don’t underestimate the power of a statement t-shirt paired with trusty denim. The recent tee-volution (as we like to call it) has seen these afterthought pieces being afforded a new and improved status, thanks to upgrades in the form of sparkly embellishments, luxe fabrics and to-die-for textures and fits. Gone are the days of bland, silhouette-hugging, v-neck t-shirts, making way for print-emblazoned, sequin soaked and more louche forms. But how to up the glam ante with such elementary pieces, you ask? We’ve picked five fabulous statement t-shirts above that’ll get hearts racing and heads turning, but not before being paired with the perfect pair of distressed jeans. Go pretty in a silk floral tee from Topshop, or make waves in Markus Lupfer’s embellished number, and inject the fun back into dressing down. When it comes to denim, distressed jeans work to the best effect, and we’re digging the super slim, relaxed and boyfriend cuts of these Paige Denim, Mango and Warehouse beauties, respectively. Slip into comfy flats and accessorise with a roomy tote for day, or stack up high in a pair of vertiginous sandals and add a clutch for laid-back evening look. 1. Known for crafting heels with an eclectically cool charm, Sophia Webster is a name hot on every fashion editor’s lips. Zesty colours and outré detail combined to create lust-worthy heels; Webster has perfected the art of making us want to incorporate bold shoes into our everyday wardrobes. Tempting us to adorn our feet with a splash of cleverly crafted leopard print this week is the Blake leopard sandal by Nicholas Kirkwood’s former protégée. A mix of intricately cut patent leather and mesh, the ankle tie detail and open back style add a glamorously sexy touch. But before letting your inclination for all things animal print take over and trick you into clicking these beauties home, how about playing the rational fash-girl game (is that even possible?) and contemplate the yays and nays for snapping up the Blake leopard sandals below? Yay Neutral colours: The pale-yellow spots, mesh outer and black patent-leather make for a flattering colour palette, so these heels wouldn’t go amiss with most of your wardrobe. Win win! Day-to-night heels: With enough dance floor appeal to take you straight to the party from your desk, you’re in luck (particularly if your work in fashion) because the Blake sandals will work wonders with an all-black look. Ankle tie trend: Tapping in to the ankle tie trend quite nicely; if you want to channel the allure of Alaïa with a dash of fun, the Blake sandals will bring the A game – especially when it comes to fashion week! Nay Price: At £530, the Blake sandals do fall into the mildly extortionate category, so don’t forget the five-outfit rule! Fiddly ankle tie: Although this is a yay, too, we’re not sure how many times it would be possible to slip in and out of the Blake sandals without landing in […]

Going to Ibiza for your hols? Here are 5 picks for your suitcase

Off to Ibiza this summer? The excitement might make you a teeny bit forgetful (we know we forget important things when we’re a little bit giddy) so we’ve compiled a list of Ibiza essentials for you to check off as you pack. As well as your obvious items, i.e. passport, sun cream, sun hat, camera, beach towel etc, here are five items we definitely don’t think you should board the plane without: 1. – Bright clothes aren’t always advised for the gloomy London weather (and standing out isn’t always desired when you’re minding you own business on the tube), but the rules totally change when it comes to your holiday! Go colour crazy in this maxi! Misumi multicoloured maxi dress, £19.99 2. – We know you’ve been waiting for months and months to slip into a new bikini, so we have a feeling it will be one of the first things you pack. We love this studded beauty from Topshop – it’ll make you stand out on a crowded beach, and also offset your tan beautifully. Topshop lime studded triangle bikini, £28. 3. – As much as we love a good pair of heels, we think summer holidays should be about giving your feet a rest along with the rest of your body, so taking a good pair of flats with you is vital. Luckily you don’t need to compromise on glamour with these gorgeous embellished sandals from Dorothy Perkins – talk about Greek goddess! Dorothy Perkins nude heavy embellished sandals, Was £35, Now £22 4. – Don’t be tempted to buy cheap knock-off sunglasses for your holidays for fear of breaking or losing them – protecting your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays should be a priority regardless of the price. The fact that these designer sunnies are chic and […]

Five lust-worthy pieces from Ark.co.uk

We were looking for a bright coloured pair of flats on Ark this morning, and one click turned to another and before we knew it we had a whole wishlist on our hands. Dangerous stuff, this online shopping business. Luckily the prices on Ark.co.uk are far from dangerous, so we don’t feel as bad for getting tempted by the wonderful products on offer. And don’t think it’s just us girls that can do a whole lot of shopping on www.ark.co.uk; the boys can have a field day on the website too as there are tons of brands that will tempt them to part with their credit cards. There’s men’s Superdry, Religion Clothing, Pretty Green by Liam Gallagher and Fred Perry among others, so make sure you send the bf a cheeky link for him to peruse on his lunch hour. You never know, you might get a present out of it as a thank you gesture. Here are five items that we are currently lusting after; can you blame us? 1. Hearts & Bows Black Janks Playsuit – Forget the LBD, it’s all about the LBP, the little black playsuit. This is both the ‘safe’ black option, and the daring option all rolled into one. Winner! 2. Ark Black Wispy False Eye Lashes – When eyeliner and mascara just isn’t enough, look no further than a pair of false eyelashes; these falsies as cheap as they are attention-grabbing. Stock up – you never know when you’ll need an instant injection of glamour! 3. Ark Pink Orla Leather Look Foil Skater Skirt – Loved the Carrie Bradshaw tutu skirt? Sarah Jessica Parker launching SJP shoe collection

Sarah Jessica Parker will be making alter ego Carrie Bradshaw green with envy, as it’s being reported that she will be designing a shoe collection entitled SJP. Short, simple, and to the point! This is ruddy fantastic news, but what took her so long, eh? SJP will be collaborating with George Malkemus, the CEO of Manolo Blahnik, and the collection will feature flats and heels ranging from £130 to £190, and handbags around the £450 mark. Not too steep – we like it! “In a silly way, I think it’s what people have expected of me most because of Carrie Bradshaw,” Sarah said. “We’re putting new colours together that people don’t typically do, just beautiful combinations that you wish existed in your closet. “And in terms of bags, thinking about that period of the Seventies into the Eighties, what those women were carrying, taking away the bells and the whistles and hardware and really making it about the bag.” We can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeve. The collection will be available exclusively at Nordstrom from next year. Excited? [E! Online]

Look Good for Less This Summer

Jetting off abroad is expensive in itself, but for many women what is packed into your suitcase is definitely as important as the destination and accommodation choices you make. With so much money being spent on your flights, food and excursions, ensuring you look as great as possible for as little cost as possible is the main aim for many. Creating a capsule wardrobe is one way of lowering the price of your suitcase style. Maxi dresses are ideal for this. Thrown over your swimwear during the day as a cover up they are easy to wear and casually cool for the midday heats, yet they can be effortlessly turned into a stunning evening wear for getaway glam. Pick up some great value maxi dresses at George from ASDA, and while you’re there take a look at their accessories selection. Bangles, necklaces and drop earrings are a quick and effective way of injecting that evening feel into your outfit, while jewel adorned flats add a touch of sparkle to your style for after sundown. The catwalks have been kind to us this season, with SS13 trends focussing on brights and whites. Try not to combine the two. White shades should be worn in blocks – ideal for keeping the heat at bay while you’re away. Thankfully, key items can be picked up at quite a good price too. Choose basic white skirts and shorts, and team these with vest tops and camis for on trend, cost efficient outfits. As with maxi dresses the ‘iridescent’ key trend is also easy to transform from day to night. While these materials often speak for themselves during the day, and create quite a classy but bold image, adding sealife shades to your outfit for the evening will pack some punch into your look. Opt […]

Steep vs. Cheap: Floral ‘n’ Stripe Vest

You’ve done luxe tees, statement sweaters and gathered enough silk shirts to officially be labelled a hoarder, so we think its time to move onto the next summer-appropriate option. A simple tank top is a wardrobe essential; louche for an off-duty ensemble, or embellished for an evening affair, but finding the balance between over-casual and over-dressy can be tough. So, to put to rest this wardrobe woe, we’ve searched high and low for the perfect tank top at either end of the price spectrum that easily works two different summer trends without being overpowering. First up, at the steep end is the Mother of Pearl Rhondos printed silk and cotton-jersey tank. Perfect for injecting fun into a relaxed look, the tank has a plain cotton-jersey back for those frightened by an all-over print, and is a stylish companion for a weekend spent lazing in a sun-splashed park. But cashing in at £135, it’s not the cheapest addition to your off-duty collection. Budge over budget blasters, and let us introduce a more modestly priced alternative. The satin trim flash floral vest from high street style saviour Oasis is an equally impressive ode to its high end counterpart, and at £16, won’t break the bank. We’re wearing ours with boyfriend jeans and comfy summer flats. Care to splash the cash, or will you be fashionably frugal? Steep: Mother of Pearl Rhondos printed silk and cotton-jersey tank, £135, available at Net-a-Porter Cheap: Satin trim flash floral vest, £16, available at Oasis

7 neon pieces worth being noticed in

Splashed and splices of neon were one of the biggest colour stories to come out of spring/summer 2013. From Erdem’s angelic lace dresses, updated with shots of zingy floral embroidery in neon orange and pink to Simone Rocha’s blinding neon daisies and delectably charged green and blue at Rag & Bone; it was the certified colourway of the new season, and one we’re not shying away from. Although fashion has a habit of repeating embarrassing mistakes from a bygone era, albeit in a slightly more modern, tasteful way, our top neon picks to be noticed don’t include any 80s disco references, or stomach-turning Day-Glo lycra workout gear. From sweeping dresses to look-at-me accessories and shoes so beautifully bright, you’ll need to get out the Ray Bans (in a good way, of course), shop our top seven neon picks below. Sophie Hulme Geometric Shorts, £278, My Wardrobe: The perfect preppy piece for pairing with a crisp shirt and flats.  Neon Animal Print Tunic Dress, £38, Topshop: This dress is guaranteed to become a festival favourite for all discerning fashionistas! Well, instead of carrying an extra change of clothes, the easiest way to get into work-free mode past 5pm is to slip into one statement piece for the day, which you can easily formalise for work, and take straight to the bar afterwards. OK, so we’re not talking about turning up to work ready for a night out, but a casual skirt thrown into the sartorial mix will prove a game changer come Friday evening. Check out our pick of five super-stylish spring skirts all under £20 (that’s more dosh for drinks), that’ll instantly transport you from behind the Mac to sitting in front of a margarita in no time! £16.23, Vero Moda: The wrap effect and bow detail give this skirt an informal edge, whilst the muted purple tone keeps it office appropriate.  Team with a tucked in, cream silk blouse and pumps for work. Post-office, team with a statement clutch and shoe boots. £9.99, Missguided: Checker board prints are a huge trend favourite for spring/summer 2013, and we can’t find a more cost effective way to invest! Festival Fashion for Summer Fun!

As Britain shifts into the spring months, the summer festival season is nearly upon us! Whether you are a regular attendee of Shambala, Sonisphere, Download, V, Reading and other festivals around the UK, you will probably remember the big mud fields last year. We are all keeping our fingers crossed in 2013 for glorious sunshine. However, you should better be prepared for the unpredictable British weather – just in case – whilst staying on trend with these festival fashion ideas… 90’s revival Great news, 90’s fashion is back! This welcome trend not only allows you to revel in nostalgia but this fashion decade was also practical with warm and durable pieces, which are now perfect for a week or weekend of camping! Key pieces include warming checked shirts, dungarees, and cargo trousers. This versatile trend also allows you to express your grungier side with leather jackets, oversized sunglasses, denim and baggy jumpers or go more feminine with crop tops and miniskirts. A good leather jacket will become a valuable investment which will last for years and will also come in handy at any time of the year. You can pick up a lot of grunge pieces with added tassels which was a big spring/summer catwalk trend this year. Floral Try this fun trend from head to toe as seen on the catwalks and celebs this year with long flowing dresses for sunny, lazy afternoons in camp. Alternatively, a short summer dress will keep you cool whilst still being functional and quick to put on in the morning. Layer a floral dress with long sleeved tops and jumpers for cooler evenings. Alternatively, why not wear jazzy floral wellies or boots for fashionable yet durable footwear? Team a floral look with lots of scarves and Contemporary Jewellery as seen at Kenzo and […]

One jacket, three ways!

The Little Jacket, be it in any form, is an essential part of a stylish wardrobe. Whether you’re a stickler for Chanel’s costly tweed version, or prefer a cost-effective high street hit that’ll see you through a trend without massively spending, the jacket brings great versatility. The right cut and fit are vital, and as it effectively pulls the outfit together, an ill-fitting jacket will mean an unflattering silhouette. We love the Etioloa jacket from By Malene Birger, because it introduces more than one trend into your wardrobe: chic Breton stripes to appeal to your inner Parisian, and tuxedo-style lapels making it the perfect option for an evening look. At a not-so-princely £279, the Etioloa jacket is an investment worth making for its trend-transcending qualities, and the fact that you’ll repeatedly visit this item in your wardrobe. Whether your style preference is dressed up or down, check out three ways to style the Etioloa jacket for any occasion, below. OFF-DUTY Clashing prints doesn’t have to mean excluding the classic Breton stripe. Go ahead and clash to your heart’s content with this cute stripe top, and welcome spring by giving jeans a miss and slipping into a casual mini skirt! A pop of metallic red makes these flats perfect for running errands ever so stylishly. PARTY Forget matchy-matchy evening looks, and incorporate three colours into your evening look with ease. We love a colour pop dress and shoulder bag combination, and nothing will make a statement quite like these embroidered satin pumps. Even Mrs. Beckham is a big fan! WORK Worn with a soft blouse and tailored-to-perfection trousers, the Etioloa jacket slides easily into office-appropriate territory. Have some fun with colour, though, and step out in bright heels for an instant lift. By Malene Birger Etioloa Cotton Stripe Jacket, £279, available at My-Wardrobe.

Beachwear and swimwear Three cheers for the one-piece – it’s back and it suits just about any figure. The bandeau is also big this summer and is great for smaller-busted women. Choose a swimsuit in a block colour, floral or tropical print, then fling on a floaty, sheer kaftan with an embellished neckline for a spot of glamour and tuck your beach belongings into a trendy tote. Statement dress The maxi dress is here to stay, which is good news as no holiday wardrobe is complete without one. Elegant and versatile, a simple maxi dress is ideal for everything from beachside lounging and daytime outings, to sunset strolls and cocktail quaffing. Sweeping fabrics, bold colours and floral prints scream femininity and style. Sundress A cotton sundress is a must for any summer holiday and is sure to have you looking and feeling cool. 5 lust-worthy pieces from John Lewis

It’s Friday, which means we have the whole weekend to tour our local high street and shop ‘til we drop – wahoo! However, as it’s Mother’s Day on Sunday (yes this Sunday – don’t forget!), you might want to spend your weekend doing something more productive – or even something leisurely with Mum – which leaves hardly any time for window shopping. Not to worry though, as the good old internet has stepped in once again and saved the day! Akin to the actual store, we can get lost on the John Lewis website for hours on end, as there are pages and pages of covetable items from clothes to shoes and in particular a great selection of Mischa Barton bags! We’ve comprised a list of five of our must-have pieces for the upcoming spring/summer 2013 season. Take a look at our selection: Lauren by Ralph Lauren Shawl Collar Cardigan, Capri Navy/White We know the spring/summer season is fast approaching, but we shouldn’t lose sight of where we are on the globe… no cropped tops and cut-off shorts on a daily basis for us here in the UK. You can still totally wear your prettiest skater dress to upcoming events, but make sure you team it with a cute cardi to keep out the chill and add some colour, texture and pattern to the outfit. This striped beauty is a particular fave! Hobbs Florrie Suede Bow Ballerina Pumps , Navy/white Wave goodbye to winter boots and say hello to pretty pumps. You can still wear your trusty black jeans, leggings and skirts this season, but mix things up with some navy and white shoes to break the black. Plus the bow is too adorable for words! These beauties also come in the nude/white colour combo, but they’re not recommended for those […]
