Lunchtime buy: Topshop baseball bomber jacket

Work the Americana trend this spring with this baseball bomber jacket from Topshop. Seen on many catwalks from Alexander Wang to Ralph Lauren, the Americana trend is one of our faves and we can’t think of a better way to emulate that all-American, classic look, than with a varsity-style jacket like this one. If you weren’t quick enough to nab the H! by Henry Holland version in denim that we scouted out last year, then this nude number is the next best thing for an instantly stylish, laid-back look. £40 / $80 from Topshop.

Five minutes with model and designer Lisa Butcher

At just 15-years-old, Lisa Butcher started life out as model. After winning British ELLE’s first modelling competition back in 1987, she was dubbed the ‘Face of the 90s’ by royal photographer Norman Parkinson and went on to star in campaigns for major brands including Ralph Lauren, Yves Saint Laurent and Max Factor. Sticking with the fashion theme, Lisa also presented the first series of hit TV show Britain’s Next Top Model and worked alongside Mica Paris on BBC’s What Not To Wear, following the departure of the (rather terrifying) Trinny and Susannah. And now? Well, it seems the British beauty can add a few more strings to her stylish bow, as she is currently a designer and ambassador for tall-fashion specialist, Long Tall Sally. We caught up with Lisa after the launch of Long Tall Sally’s very first National Stand Tall Week to find out more about her involvement with the brand and to see what advice she could give to tall ladies out there who might struggle when it comes to shopping on the high-street. How did your collaboration with Long Tall Sally come about? Long tall Sally approached me after the second series of What Not To Wear. I had heard of the brand before, but felt the collections could be stronger. As it happened, the Bennett Brothers – who turned around Oasis and Phase Eight amongst other brands – had just bought out the business and wanted to create a totally new image for Long Tall Sally, so I jumped at the chance to work with them as they have such great reputations. I asked if I could have a go at designing, and it proved really successful and has just grown from there. Plus, it’s also loads of fun! As a designer and ambassador for Long […]

Lunchtime buy: Siwy Camilla Loveless shorts

Comfortable and practical, denim shorts are a wardrobe staple come the summer and it looks like we’re set to see more of them this season. D&G and Ralph Lauren were among those flaunting short hemlines in light-wash denim on the spring 2010 catwalks, while Hermes went for a darker option, teaming with a cape jacket and strappy sandals. We love the look of this casual, distressed pair from New York label, Siwy. A brand with quite the celebrity following (including the likes of Ashley Tisdale, Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Nicole Ritchie), Siwy offers a range of fashion-forward denim designs that focus on high-quality detail and fit. Perfect for that just-chucked-on look, these ‘Camilla Loveless’ shorts not only look the part but also aim to flatter the figure; the padded motifs featured on both back pockets are said to lift and shape your behind. Bonus! £150 from Harvey Nichols.

MFL’s top 20 must-haves for spring

The (admittedly few) sunny days we’ve had this week have really got us looking forward to warmer months and since we’ve already given our current wardrobe a good old spring clean, we like to think that we deserve a bit of seasonal indulgence. In an early attempt to create our spring wish list, we’ve compiled some of our favourite pieces for the coming season. If we’re honest, there were a lot more than 20 but we’ve managed to narrow down our options to some key items. What are your thoughts? Let us know the items you’re after this spring! Camilla Skovgaard mules For those that aren’t too keen on the idea of clogs for spring, why not invest in a pair of mules. This pair come courtesy of one of our favourite shoe designers of the moment. £280 from Net-a-Porter. AG Adriano Goldschmied boyfriend jeans You can never go wrong with a pair of boyfriend jeans. Team these with flats or heels and if you’re feeling extra daring, add a denim shirt for Chloe’s take on spring. $225 from Shopbop. Topshop bralet Underwear as outerwear is big news this season. Have a little fun with the trend by mixing bold prints with this daring bralet from Topshop. £20 from Topshop. Mulberry Alexa Ah, the Mulberry Alexa. Lunchtime buy: Stolen Girlfriends Club Old News Shirt

Hot on the heels of designers like Alexander Wang, Ralph Lauren and D&G, is Stolen Girlfriends Club who have created an American-inspired range that is now being sold on ASOS. The collection is a casual mix of logo t-shirts, jersey sweaters and body-con dresses with paneled detailing of mesh and sequins. The piece that we’re after? This take on the denim shirt, which is set to be a wardrobe favourite again this spring. Forget the power shoulder for now, The Old News Shirt draws attention to the area in a laid back, cowboy-esque style. Take a brave tip from Chloe and Louis Vuitton by wearing against denim jeans, or tuck into a body-con mini-skirt. £175 from ASOS.

Five minutes with model-come-designer Caprice

She’s made her mark as one of Britain’s most prolific lingerie models since her move from California to the UK fourteen years ago. Now, as she enters her second season as designer for the all-new online shopping site Very.co.uk, we took the chance to catch up with Caprice to hear all about her new collection, her inspirations, and her role as designer. This isn’t your first delve into design; can you tell us how you came to your role as designer in the first place? It kind of started with my lingerie at Debenhams and I saw how rich I was getting so I thought, ‘I can do this myself’. So I bought back my license with a quarter of a million pounds to open the doors, and that started four years ago; but of course with designing you’re always working ahead so it probably went on shop floors about three years ago. And we’re doing really well, we don’t have any debt or anything like that so I’m really happy. What is it about the Very brand that appeals to you? I think it’s modern, young, very accessible, and it’s one of my best clients , I have a really loyal customer base through Very. It’s at a great price point, too; is that something you’re conscious of as a designer , making your collections accessible? There are two reasons for that: First is I have to look at my target market and that, for me, is mass market. I wanted to create a product that looks expensive but is very affordable. Especially in the current economic climate; people just aren’t compulsive buying any more, that’s been done. So let’s talk about your new collection , what can we expect? It’s very bright, summery, sexy, feminine; there’s lots of […]

Selena Gomez to launch collection

Move over Miley Cyrus, there’s a new tween in fashion town; Disney star Selena Gomez is launching her own line. Best known for her lead role on the Disney Channel’s ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’, the 17-year-old has been busy designing her own eco-friendly fashion collection, Dream Out Loud by Selena Gomez, set to launch for A/W10. “Growing up in Texas, I was sort of close-minded and kind of a tomboy, but as I’ve travelled, I found such a love of clothes, said the young beauty, who, like Miley, looks far older than her age. “It’s really always been a dream of mine to have a line. Created with a team of industry experts, including Tony Melillo, former Generra designer and creator of his eponymous menswear label, and Sandra Campos, business brains behind Polo Ralph Lauren, Gomez’ line is “pretty, feminine and bohemian, which is reflective of her own style. “She has such a good sense of what she likes and what she doesn’t like, Melillo, creative director for the Dream Out Loud by Selena Gomez line, told WWD. “It was surprising as I’ve never worked with someone so young, and never really expected her to be so smart. She has a desire to be involved, and nothing is sent out there without her approval. Planning to launch a full sportswear collection for A/W10, the line is made up of Boho dresses, floral printed tops, jeans, skirts, jackets and accessories including scarves and hats. It probably won’t be our sort of thing, but it looks as though Gomez could take the tween fashion world by storm.

New Yorkers for Children hosted it’s 10th annual gala on Tuesday to raise money for the important New York City based charity, and the city’s elite arrived in force. As well as raising much-needed awareness, the gala raised over $300,000 for the charity, which supports New York City kids in foster care through establishing tutoring programs, scholarships and networking opportunities. Among the celebrity attendees was model Jessica White, who strutted her stuff down the red carpet in support of the charity. Evening’s festivities included the premiere of Director Tony Gilroy’s short film, which featured testimonies from eight children currently in foster care. This is not the only charity Jessica associates herself with, either. The 25-year-old , who has lead campaigns for Chloe and Gap as well as appearing on the catwalk for Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs and Tommy Hilfiger , recently started her own foundation, Angel Wings, which provides services to women and children who have fallen victim to domestic abuse. We’ve got to hand it to the girl, she’s a great model, but an even better ambassador.

Oscar de la Renta blasts Michelle Obama’s style choices

You can never please everyone. I thought Michelle Obama’s style choices were perfect. She understands the occasion and dresses to suit, whilst still looking stylish and elegant. She has created her own look, in a Jackie O vein, she looks timeless yet fashionable. I’ve also enjoyed watching her loyalty to designers such as Thakoon and Jason Wu. But some people are not so happy with her choices. One in particular is Oscar de la Renta: “American fashion right now is struggling. I think I understand what [Obama and her advisors] are doing, but I don’t think that is the right message at the particular point… I don’t object to the fact that Mrs Obama is wearing J. Crew to whatever because the diversity of America is what makes this country great. But there are a lot of great designers out there. I think it’s wrong to go in one direction only.

His most recent participation in Mercedes-Benz Spring 2004 Fashion Week has secured his place as the next big thing. Have a taste of Dres….. You’ve worked for some very prestigious names such as Ralph Lauren and Hussein Chalayan how does working on your own label compare to working for someone else? Working for Ralph Lauren and Hussein Chalayan was a great educational experience. I learned so much. However, these are established names in fashion. I am not. I was hoping that after my Spring 2004 show I would become the next Proenza Schouler. Not the case. I always think that each of my collections has the potential to launch me into stardom. However, the reality is starting a fashion business is one of the hardest things to do. Competition makes our jobs so difficult. Each day my job requires extreme focus, risks, determination, and endurance. For the first time, I am putting my fate in the hands of others. Most of the time everything works out, but sometimes it doesn’t. Regardless, it is my name and money on the line. All responsibility lies on my shoulders. This has been the hardest thing I have had to do. What keeps me going is knowing that I am following my […]

Best of 2011: Kate Middleton’s year in style

Whether you love her or loathe her (and we don’t believe you if you do the latter), 2011 owes itself solely to one woman: Kate Middleton. Though her style remains distinctly average in our book (string us up and hang us for treason), there’s no denying the effect the Duchess of Cambridge has had on the world. And, since everything she wears sells out in seconds, the fashion brands she favours have got a lot to thank her for. Like everyone else, we’re kind of intrigued with her influence, so we’ve trawled through Kate’s best looks from this year to see her rise from pauper (ha!) to Princess in pictures, which has lead us to the following conclusions: 1) she’s a mega-fan of the high street, 2) she only wears a handful of designers and regurgitates them as necessary, 3) June was a particularly good month. Without further ado, here’s her year in style… January: Reiss Kate wears a Reiss ‘Nanette’ dress for her official engagement photos shot by Mario Testino, and the hysteria begins. April: Alexander McQueen Just another white dress. We’re kidding! Kate gets married in a jaw-dropping Alexander McQueen dress designed by Sarah Burton and the world stops in its tracks. April: Zara The new Duchess of Cambridge steps out the day after her wedding in another high street dress, this time from Zara. The world applauds her for remaining the peoples’ Princess despite being an official royal. May: Reiss Kate meets Michelle Obama for the first time; everyone gets excited about the pair’s fashion politics. Kate opts for another Reiss dress, nude in colour with a boxy neckline and panelled waistband. June: Jenny Packham Her first charity gala since getting married and Kate opts for a glistening champagne-pink gown by Jenny Packham, which skims the floor […]
