Beyonce succumbs to the celebrity fragrance

Jennifer Lopez, Avril Lavigne, Christina Aguilera, Sarah Jessica Parker, Mariah Carey, Alex Curran. These ladies all have one thing in common, despite the fact that the mention of Alex Curran within this list of high profile celebs seems slightly wrong. Yes, they have all put their names to fragrances of course, and WWD have just revealed that Beyonce will be the next star to release her own scent. The popstar – who often refers to her stage alter ego, Sasha Fierce – teamed up with Coty, the company responsible for the celebrity fragrance launch that started the craze back in 2002: JLo’s Glow. While many assumed that the singer would follow in the footsteps of husband Jay-Z and sign a deal with Parlux Fragrances inc. Beyonce revealed that she didn’t rush into accepting a fragrance company to collaborate with: ‘For me, fragrance reflects a woman’s attitude and unique sense of style… while I love various perfumes, I haven’t found a scent that truly personifies me as a woman. Working with Coty I was able to turn my ideal fragrance into a reality by creating an alluring and sophisticated fragrance; one that’s refelective of my inner power.’ Beyonce’s timing however, is not the best, for NPD group have estimated that the average celebrity fragrance only generated around $2.5 million in 2008. Now, that definitely doesn’t sound like a profit to turn your nose up at but it is worth considering that sales have dropped dramatically since celebrity perfumes first hit the shelves. JLo must have been rubbing her hands in glee when Glow was launched, making $100 million worldwide in its first year! So. Another year, another celebrity fragrance. We love Beyonce, but we’re not sure what to make of this. We think we’ll reserve judgement until we can get a whiff… thoughts? Beyonce’s perfume is set […]

Elizabeth Taylor’s hat order

The Hollywood legend recently placed the order with royal milliner Philip Treacy, after she was impressed with his quick response to her fashion query. Treacy revealed: ‘Her assistant called me up asking for hair pin and I sent her a message back asking if she wanted a hat to go with it. It turns out that she did – she wanted lots of them!’ Taylor asked the hat creator to meet her at a London hotel so he could show off his designs – and while he picked hats for her to wear, the 81-year-old screen star entertained him with songs and cocktails. Treacy explained: ‘We spent two evenings at her suite at The Dorchester hotel fitting them, looking in the mirror. She even sang a song for us and ordered us cocktails. She doesn’t need an excuse to buy that many, she invented celebrity extravagance.’

SJP recreates Diana Vreeland for Harper’s Bazaar

Sarah Jessica Parker is a true woman’s woman. Men don’t get her, women can’t be without her. And in the March issue of Harper’s Bazaar she chats about Vreeland, Gossip Girl and of course Carrie Bradshaw. In a shoot inspired by the late, great editor of Harper’s Bazaar Diana Vreeland, SJP keeps true to her signature style of sleek with a hint of quirky. Shot by Peter Lindbergh, we see SJP in a range of DV poses, wearing at one point an LBD but certainly with no VPL. Ok, enough with the acronyms. Wearing gorgeous pieces from the likes of Salvatore Ferragamo and Yves Saint Laurent, Sarah-Jessica looks every inch the glamorous editor. It is a surprising shoot when compared with the cover, the shoot has a moody flamboyance whereas the cover is eye-catching with springtime pinks. The interview reminds us why we love Sarah-Jessica so much, her positivity and fabulous outlook shines through all of her comments. When asked about how Carrie Bradshaw would handle the recession, she replied: “She would probably end up in a hospital. Perhaps she would go back to her ’80s stuff and start bringing it out again.” Is anyone else thinking that there might be another series in that? ‘Carrie Faces The Crunch’ wouldn’t you just love to see her customizing her Manolo’s and rooting for vintage Chanel? But maybe we should just let SJP rest from the limelight of her alter ego for a while. In response to whether the Sex And The City bus tours affect her everyday life she said: “Ah, yes, I run into it. There are times when it’s totally terrific, and there are times when I’m like, Oh, God, I’d better run in the other direction. Especially when I’m with my son.” Although, probably my favorite part of […]

Celeb Designers: No thanks!

Well, it seems as though every young celeb and their mother has decided to design their own line. At this point I wouldn’t be surprised to wake up tomorrow and find out that George Clooney was actually launching a menswear line in conjunction with Brooks Brothers. In any event, below is a list of celebs I sincerely hope, no, I plead with, not to design anything!

Celebrity Labels: Enough is Enough

Actress SARAH JESSICA PARKER has launched a crusade to cover up young America with her new cheap-chic clothing line Bitten. The former Sex + The City star’s new Steve + Barry line of affordable womenswear features only conservative attire – because the actress is tired of seeing young girls baring almost all…….”There’s not going to be any inappropriate midriff showing, regardless of your age. I really don’t care for it. I feel like, as a culture, we have seen enough damage done by it. It’s provocative in a way that I just don’t feel comfortable with.” Erm o.k… this revelation comes after Sarah Jessica Parker enjoyed a high level of success from a show which was far from conservative. I’ve gnerally tried to stay away from the SJP for Steve and Barry’s relationship and try to avoid posting too often about the other celebrity lines which keep cropping up mainly because I have no interest in them. I believe what is actually damaging for us as a culture are all of these damn celebrity collections! Designers for the high street I can somewhat understand, we’re buying into the design which is good enough for me and as much as I sometimes have my reservations about some of the partnerships, I fully accept the argument for them and I’m willing to accept that my qualms are based on unreasonable emotion. But celebrities for the high street and celebrity labels in general, need to be stopped. I’m all for affordable fashion, my wardrobe would be empty without it, but what I find distasteful is the mass hysteria that surrounds the idea that a collection of clothes is only as worthy as the celebrity attached to it. I pity the next generation who soon enough will only associate and make their fashion choices […]

I know that I’m in it – I have a nice part in it, I’m told. If it happens, we should film it in the early fall I think.

Alexa Chung and Tavi Gevinson sing their support for Obama

With the day of the US presidential elections edging closer and closer, it looks like Barack Obama needs all the help he can get if he is to defeat opponent Mitt Romney who plans to axe funding for Planned Parenthood if he is elected. A host of A-listers from the likes of Beyonce and Jessica Alba have been keen to show their support for current President Barack Obama, but that’s not where it ends. Even Alexa Chung has jumped on the bandwagon, and has joined Tavi Gevinson, Tennessee Thomas and more ladies in lip-synching Lesley Gore’s 1964 hit You Don’t Own Me in a bid to encourage women to vote against Mitt Romney. The video was spearheaded by Sarah Sophie Flicker, the leader of cabaret act The Citizens Band. “In a year that has seen the greatest backlash against women’s rights in recent history, now is the time not only to vote, but to send a mandate,” Sarah told Examiner. “I’m struck by the fact that we are teetering dangerously close to a situation where my daughter won’t have the same rights I’ve enjoyed my entire life and that scares the heck out of me. Women constituted 60 per cent of the last election’s voters. We can win this thing. We just have to agitate, motivate, and get out the darn vote!” You heard her, American readers!

Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic Sex and the City tutu only cost $5, nearly didn’t get used

Carrie Bradshaw may have an enviable designer wardrobe, but it turns out that she didn’t always have such expensive taste. It’s been revealed that the iconic tutu from the opening credits of Sex and the City (and inarguably the most famous piece of clothing from the show and two movies combined) was actually a $5 bargain find. And according to costume creator Patricia Field, it very nearly didn’t get used as producer Darren Star wasn’t too keen on it. “I was in a showroom and there was a bucket on the floor, for like, $5 each or something, and I pull out this tulle skirt, and I’m like, ‘I don’t know, let’s just take this. We’ll see,’” said Patricia. “So when I showed it to Sarah Jessica, she loved it. And I said, ‘Okay, so we’ll put it with a little T-shirt,’ and she loved it. She felt it.  And then we had to convince Darren. He didn’t get it. I don’t blame him – it’s not his thing. And we were coming to him with something strange, in his mind. So we had to convince him.’” Obviously the ladies’ powers of persuasion worked a treat – and we are eternally grateful. Let this be a lesson to all you bargain bucket snobs: you never know what gems you might find in there so roll up your sleeves and get stuck in! [Daily Mail] [Image]
