Rodarte inspired by birds

Laura and Kate Mulleavy are inspired by bird-pecked fabric. The Rodarte designers first realised their take on fashion was different to others when they watched 1963 horror movie ‘The Birds’, which sees an American town besieged by the winged creatures. Referring to a scene which involves Tippi Hedren’s character Melanie Daniels attacked by a flock of birds, Kate explained: ‘Everyone in fashion loves Tippi wearing that green suit in ‘The Birds’, but we love the suit after she has been pecked.’

Summer 09 Trend: Jumpsuits

Convenient (step in, zip up, and go!) and inconvenient (best to have a friend for trips to the bathroom) in equal parts, the jumpsuit is back on our fashion radar. Yes, while we once thought that it took a strongly fashion-forward woman to wear a jumpsuit, it’s now clear that it just takes a smart one. With even the most fervent romper-hater reconsidering their stance, why not bring out your bold side this season with the jumpsuit?

Sorry Mrs Beckham, David’s the designer now

I’m starting to think that there may be a little game of ‘anything you can do I can do better’ in the Beckham household. We’ve seen each of them jump on advertising wagon, the reinvent yourself train, the trend bus , ok enough with the transport metaphors. But they do seem to like to copy each other, remember David wearing a skirt? Or how about the Armani underwear adverts? But after

PPQ to collaborate with Adidas

So there we were having a peruse of Grazia Daily and stumbled across a rather dramatic revelation. In an interview with the fashion magazine’s website, PPQ designer Amy Molyneaux chatted about all things fashion week and collaborations. And one such collaboration, that has yet to be officially announced, is a link up with Adidas. PPQ will be creating a girly sportswear collection for AW09. She even gave readers a little heads up on what to expect: “We’re designing pieces like jumper dresses but then styling them against brothel creepers. The Stella McCartney collaboration still excites us, but PPQ would be incredible, it might even be enough to get me exercising. Amy also let slip that she’s doing some top secret fittings with Girl’s Aloud. It’s all very exciting stuff. And it might be just what the doctor ordered, cost effective PPQ garments that actually have a purpose, now that’s value for money.

London Fashion Week: Noir/Bllack Noir AW09

This was ethical fashion’s time to say, “hey, look, we can be super slick, super sexy, and super fashionable to. And they did show the world that ethical fashion doesn’t have to be all boho hippies and jerseys. This was a sexy, vampish collection. Lots of black, navy and hints of gold and copious amounts of leather. Yes this was a collection not to be messed with. An array of leather trousers headed down the catwalk, my favourites being a leather/lycra combo with leather at the front and a jodhpur like lycra at the back and a pair of leather harem trousers that should just not work, but they did, they really did. There was a sportswear-biker influence, nicely draped silks were set against the tough biker style leathers. The majority of leather was seen in the Bllack Noir section of the show, a leather mini dress also was fab. The Noir was a lighter, freer look, although still keeping heavy leather accessories. Duck egg blues brought colour to the show; a mini silk dress with an abstract pattern was wearable and sexy. The antique gold sequined creations were lovely whilst the navy full-length gown with sequin arm detailing was phenomenal. They weren’t cutting edge designs, but I think this was its appeal. It showed the audience, glamour, sex and wearability, which for ethical fashion is the most important thing. It needed to show fashion lovers that sustainable fashion is as cool and chic as the mainstream. And this it did. [Images, Images]

London Fashion Week: Vivienne Westwood Red Label

Even standing in the queue for this show was an event; it was a who’s who of celebsville, from Pamela Anderson to Mischa Barton to Kate Moss to Erin O’Connor and Dita Von Teese, yes they were all there en masse. Oh, and I must add that Dita really is flawless. So, on with the clothes and the curiously long catwalk (the models must have been exhausted). To say I was excited is an understatement but I am very pleased to report that the Grande Dame of fashion did not disappoint.

Designer Alert: Angel Jackson

Despite Launching in 2005, Angel Jackson has really come into its own this year with distinctive designs attracting a considerable amount of attention from the fashion press. You may well recognise their now almost iconic gold plated jaguar belt, famously pictured worn by various members of Girls Aloud. There is however much more to this designer than cinching the teeny weeny waists of Britain’s favourite girl band and Angel Jackson’s collection of bags, belts and clutches are certainly worth a look.

Features: Gap’s new look

With fashion going mainstream over the past few years via stores like H&M and Target, it’s been tough for even an old favourite, like the Gap, to keep pace. Known mainly for being the go-to for American sportswear essentials, like basic jeans, t-shirts, sweaters and oxford button-downs, the Gap has not shifted from its clean cut, preppy aesthetic since I was a kid in Junior High.

Reviews: Gina Velasco Spring 2008

Gina Velasco describes her Spring 2008 Ready-to-Wear collection “Bolero Breve” as being inspired by the 1920s and the work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. In theory this may seem like a strange converging point, but Velasco managed to pull it off flawlessly. The twenty-nine piece collection was presented on Wednesday to an intimate crowd who seemed to receive the designer’s collection warmly. While the first few looks of the show included sportswear items, it was the series of evening dresses that I was most impressed by. Velasco incorporated embellishments like crochet, embroidery and beading in a very fresh way, without seeming derivative or tacky. A long pale pink silk gown has pink crochet along the chest. A knee length gray sheath features beaded vines twisting up the bodice. A v-necked mini dress has a pink crocheted top and a white chiffon skirt embroidered with blossoms.

Adidas x robotisthefuture EQT B-Ball

We’re loving this version of the Adidas EQT B-balls. With the help of hip hop video production house ROBOT films, Adidas have revamped the EQT B-Ball which now joins other old classics that have been re-designed as part of a new collection entitled REMIX. “It’s similar to a Mixtape DJ blending or a record label having single remixed. We take the adidas Sport Performance models and add a little of this and a little of that, just as DJ’s and producers do, resulting in products that are in trend for the person wanting to rock something different and unique or the collector looking to add another piece to his or hers sneaker museum. We do our best to keep an ear to the street. And we give ‘em what they want,” says Bryon Sheng , co-creator of REMIX. The real wow factor of the remixed version is the 3M fabrication which makes it turn all white in the dark. Yes as usual this is a limited edition and only 500 pairs are being released in the U.S. We’re waiting on Adidas to send us a list of stockists. Stay tuned for more info. Oh I almost forgot, the Adidas x robotisthefuture EQT B-Ball’s retail at $150. ***UPDATE*** List of stockists after the jump

House of Dereon launches to a mixed reaction

So Beyonce’s new line is causing quite a stir, some think its way too expensive while others can’t get enough. Either way, many are talking about the debut of the House of Dereon. Beyonce has released a statement saying, ” the aim is to fuse celebrity power and design artistry into a brand of global importance.” Intending to offer affordable couture, furs, ready-to-wear, denim and casual sportswear, the line is named after her seamstress grandma and according to the bootylicious babe its theme is, taking nothing and turning it into something because that’s what my grandmother did with all kinds of fabrics. She just turned everything into masterpieces, and that’s what my mother does.” Could Beyonce be a bit deranged? Tina’s creations are far from masterpieces, more like god awful! Destiny Child’s style has drastically changed since they were released from wearing the nightmare that was Tina Knowles designs. And they emerged more stylish and glam then ever…. It’s very likely her grandma did create something out of nothing but today, Miss and Mrs Knowles are far from doing they same. With a great deal of start up capital enabling them to invest in better fabrics than most, this really cant be what Beyonce’s referring to as nothing. It’s bad enough she’s joined the whole celebrity cum fashion designer posse who are determined to take over the industry, but trying to justify it, with a lame grandma theme really doesn’t sound too good. The collection isn’t as bad as Tina’s earlier work, but the House of Dereon hasn’t really made or added any creative differences to the industry. Nevertheless sales of the label probably won’t reflect this, and everyone will most likely run out to buy pieces because Miss Knowles supposedly designed it. Jeans are currently available for purchase on […]

The First “Technological Stylist”

There are those such as Vincent Van Gogh, Prince and Coco Chanel who are considered to have been ahead of their times. Switch to today and that could not be said for many, apart from Alexandra Fede. While most fashion designers are still experimenting with the combination of different eras, Alexandra Fede has taken her creativity one step further with the fusion of Science, Technology and Fashion. Resulting in a portfolio filled with remarkable creations such as Anti Violence, a range of garments made with fabric resistant to bullets, knives, razors and more. And the Gold Dress, a dress made of gold cards and kilometres of gold wire as featured in the Guinness Book of records 1999. And while not many of us are walking around in Alexandra Fede it can be safe to say that if she has her way, we will be. The idea of combining science with fashion is extremely innovative, what inspired you to develop this concept? Fashion has always been for me an extremely creative world but I have always had the feeling that something has to change for a better quality of life. In today’s world creativity is not enough. I started researching to give some added value to the wearer. Thanks to the haute couture, which I used as an experimentation lab, I tested new fibres and finishes along with a design and style that would reflect sometimes invisible innovation in the apparel. I had many inspirations coming out from observing the people’s needs and my own. For example: one day I was flying from Rome to Paris for an important meeting and you know what happened on the plane? Due to the turbulence I spilt all my orange juice on my clothes. At that time I felt terrible as I did not […]
