Five minutes with Isabella Oliver’s Baukjen de Swaan Arons

Founder and Creative Director of Isabella Oliver and the fashion brand Baukjen, Baujken Swaan Arons set up her company in 2003 out of sheer frustration, caused by the lack of stylish maternity wear available on the market. Nearly a decade later, and with a cult celebrity following, Isabella Oliver is bigger than ever and every discerning fashionista’s go-to name for comfortable and stylish pieces. My Fashion Life caught up with Baukjen to talk party season style, fashionable mums and wardrobe staples. Your womenswear brand was called Isabella Oliver 365 before being reintroduced as Baukjen. Tell us what inspired this change in name? Originally, our womenswear collection evolved from the Isabella Oliver maternity line. It grew so much faster than we’d ever imagined and we felt it needed its own space to live and breathe. Separating the brands gives them both the space to grow to their full potential. Name three wardrobe staples you cannot live without. A leather biker jacket is an essential and a modern classic; our Agyness Leather Jacket has jersey inserts so its gives a great fit. I wear it over day looks but also over more dressy evening outfits. Black ankle boots work with everything – leather leggings, jersey dresses, jeans and t-shirts – I’m constantly wearing mine. I love stripes and this season I’m wearing them in jersey. Our caramel and black striped dress is great for quick and easy everyday style. I wear it over leggings, ankle boots and pop the black Maryna Blazer over it and add long necklaces. Isabella Oliver Maternity was set up to provide stylish pieces for expectant mums; what experiences led you to specifically choose this market? When I was pregnant with my first child it was very difficult to find stylish maternity wear that reflected my usual style. […]

Make a statement in lace this winter!

Lace has been one of the biggest trends this year, not only has it dominated the spring catwalks with its bright and bold colours, but it is back with a different twist for winter. This season’s winter lace is more edgy rather than sweet with darker tones giving a sleek and chic look for winter, perfect for any special occasion. At the moment the high street is filled with catwalk inspired dresses to suit the A/W season. Check out this look to get you ready for the winter party season, Phase Eight’s Lace Maxi dress. If you are not keen on going all out with a statement lace dress, lace accessories can work wonders. Adding a lace clutch or scarf will add a little elegance to your look allowing you to transform your outfit from office to evening wear. This trend is perfect for attending a winter wedding with the romantic fabrics or perhaps an elegant alternative to the little party dress. The best way to wear this season’s lace is to vamp it up with dark deep colours and layers. Team the feminine lace with heavy fabrics like leather and velvet to update your look from spring to autumn. The lace trend is certainly taking off and Phase Eight are ones to watch with their wedding guest collection which showcases occasion wear from exquisite lace dresses to simple lace detailing.

London Fashion Week SS13 – Highlights from Day 2

Fashion, much like the city it’s currently creating a next season buzz in, never sleeps, and so it was on to day 2 of London Fashion Week. It was a super-busy day for us, zapping around what felt like the whole of London (in heels, too!), but it was the summer inspo for next season that kept us going. Oh, and tons of caffeine! Here are the show highlights from day 2 of London Fashion Week… Who:Tahir Sultan What: Marrying glamour with a everyday aesthetic, for SS’13, designer Tahir Sultan embellished beautifully fluid suits with studs, as to form a spine down the wearers back. Soft knits embellished with chain detailing; zingy pink and lime particularly caught our eye, paired with soft grey and charcoal hued structured blazers. Much emphasis was given to dressing below the waist, with colour-pop harem pants, Forties-inspired wide-leg trouser, and a show-stopping fringed skirt, paired with a blazer and emerald green heels, added after-hours drama to daytime dressing. Highlight: A black, low-tiered evening gown with feather and beaded fringing detail. To summarise: A collection “dedicated to the secret few who know that nothing is more fashionable than just being yourself” certainly justified the underlying ease and freedom that shone through the glamorous silhouettes. Who: Jeffrey Michael What: The collection titled “From the Water” looked to “a woman emerging from the waves and seafoam at midnight” took a fun-injected approach to the aquatic theme evident in the spring/summer 2012 collections. A colour palette of bubblegum pink, purple and ocean blue came with 3D fish-gill like detailing on dress corsets. Jeffrey Michael’s signature triangle print was fashioned to resemble scales, splashed across cropped halter necks and strapless bodies; a stunning corset embellished entirely with sea shells left us speechless, and flippy pleated skirts completed the look. Highlight: Faux […]

Gorgeous Grecian Goddess – get the look!

[noskim] If watching the Olympic sports wasn’t really your kind of thing then we hope you took inspiration from the heritage of the games. As you’ll probably know the Olympics has its roots in Ancient Greece, a time synonymous with goddesses dressed in flowing garments, tunics and gladiator sandals – sounds a bit like the trends of today, no? So, if you found that you just couldn’t get into Olympic table tennis don’t despair. We’re still holding on to the spirit of Olympic fever by channelling Grecian fashion and you can get it too. Read on to get gorgeously Grecian with tips from plus size clothing retailer Curvissa. Clothes Ok. So, a sheet wrapped around your torso with a few ivy leaves pinned on probably isn’t going to cut it if you want to look ultra sexy (unless, of course it’s fancy dress, and then by all means – old sheets and ripped ivy are the way forward!). Instead, you can quite easily find Grecian style evening dresses on the high street. Opt for floaty white dresses with clinched in waists and wrap over effects to really get that Grecian look. For Grecian straps think one shouldered or cap sleeved. Add some gold bangles or a gold waist belt to really capture that goddess vibe. It doesn’t always have to be about white though. Grecian style dresses have been a big hit this summer and you can find a great selection of Greek goddess style maxi dresses – for alternative colours think black, emerald or turquoise. Make up The Grecian look is all about the dramatic eyes. Apply a light gold eye shadow on your eye lid and use a dark brown matte in the crease of your eye for a contouring effect. Then lightly mix together so that the […]

Eva Longoria perfects the off-duty look with Coach

We’re in an off-duty admiration mood this afternoon – and who better to look to for style inspiration than Eva Longoria, hm? The stunning Latina always manages to look just as effortlessly cool and gorgeous when she’s walking around town minding her own business as she does when she’s dressed up to the nines at a super-glam red carpet function. Us, jealous? Well, maybe a tad, but can you blame us? Eva strolled through Los Angeles in a monochrome printed maxi dress which she accessorised with flat sandals (the perfect choice for a casual walk) and a matching hat to protect her gorgeous brunette mane from the sun. The stand-out piece was of course the bright red Coach Legacy Leather duffle, which just goes to show how powerful those all-important statement pieces can be. Steal Eva’s style by investing in this bright beauty, or any other bold coloured piece of arm (or shoulder) candy that takes your fancy!

How to Wear: D&G Boucle Chain Trim Jacket

We bet, across the nation today it’s all maxi dresses, summer prints and toe-revealing sandals ago go! Yes, the barometer has reached new heights and so has our summer wardrobe enthusiasm, with as much flesh as is climatically appropriate on show, and the money spent on keeping our wardrobe SS12 fresh put to good use! But, this is Britain and like Lauren Goodger’s tan levels, the weather can take a turn for the worst without warning. So, to banish those dreaded summer evening chills, we’ve decided to pick out a life saving wardrobe addition for this week’s How to Wear. High on our summer chill prevention list is the luxe knitted D&G Boucle Chain Trim Jacket. Serving as the perfect warm weather cover up, we love the delicious sugary pink colour and contrast trim with chain embellishment. When the temperature is on the up, the last thing fashionistas want to do is lug around a heavy ‘in case’ jacket to tackle weather blips. The D&G Boucle jacket is the perfect midway between practicality and style, and ticks all the major trends this season: ladylike, embellishment and fizzy pastel shades. Here are three easy ways to style it. D&G Boucle Chain Trim Jacket, £550,  Harrods shown throughout; MOTO Organic Blue Baxter Jean,£40, Topshop (wear slightly rolled up);  KG Kurt Keiger Dora Backless Courts, £140, Kurt Geiger; Stella McCartney Iconic Cotton T-shirt, £65, The OUTNET Jacket as above; Textured Lantern Skirt, £35, Topshop, Preen ALDO Rise Exclusive Giffee Printed Heeled Sandals, £135, ASOS Jacket as above; Acne Sweety Printed Dress, £300, My Theresa; KG Kurt Geiger Syble Mini Bag, £120, Kurt Geiger D&G Boucle Chain Trim Jacket, £550, available at Harrods

Rate or Slate: Reese Witherspoon vs. Whitney Port vs. Miley Cyrus

This week’s Rate or Slate is another tough feat! We’ve got three A-list beauties, all of whom in their own rights are definite trend-setters. This week’s ladies on the style line are Reese Witherspoon in Erdem at the This Means War Brazil press conference; Whitney Port in All Saints at the Didier Drogba Foundation Charity Ball in London and Miley Cyrus at the LA premiere for The Hunger Games in Emilio Pucci. Only the discerning eye of our outfit dissecting Style Jury can really decide the fashion fate of these starlets. It’s over to the jury…. My Fashion Life Fashion News Ed says: Reese Witherspoon: ‘Reese doesn’t need a bright, summery outfit to add sunshine to her look, but this dress certainly helps. Love herCaliforniagirl look –plus she is WORKING that fringed ‘do!’ WhitneyPort: ‘I’m in two minds about this look; the Grecian look works well with the honey tones of Whitney’s hair and complexion (plus, the jewellery is spot on) but there’s something about it that’s a tad frumpy. Cheryl Cole did Greek chic perfectly a few weeks ago so, comparatively speaking, I’ve seen better but I don’t hate it.’ Miley Cyrus: ‘I raved about Miley’s Emilio Pucci ensemble yesterday, and completely stand by every positive word. She’s establishing herself as quite the little fashionista, and I’m excited to see what she does next. Absolute fave!’ You say: ‘Miley looks amazing!!!X’ – @EllaVS ‘Miley is on top’ – @nohanooon Verdict: Rate to the power of two! Miley and Reese are the undisputed favourites, and translated their fabulous sense of style perfectly with the Emilio Pucci and Erdem looks, respectively. Although Miley’s midriff flaunting could have turned into a fashion fiasco, she pulled it off (must be those taut abs) and we love her for it! Reese’s floral tribute was […]

Runway to Bedroom Mirror: Aquatic Affection

Create your own underwater odyssey with this season’s oceanic obsessions. Thanks to certain designers championing all things sea life, spring summer 2012 offered super-desirable, and highly wearable underwater inspired creations. Think Ariel Mermaid metallic, bright Nemo references and even the deep sea ice coolness of Jaws, as designers including Mary Katrantzou, Chanel and Versace introduced us to the fashion above sea-level. The conch shell clutch and fish gill-like qualities at Chanel had us dizzy, while Mary Katrantzou’s pixelated fish swimming across taffeta cocktail dresses made us want to dive into the delectable digi-prints. Stella McCartney’s ocean wave-edged printed jackets and slip dresses made us want to unashamedly surf on our aquatic high. How to wear the gilet and our top 5 picks

We’re going to let you into a secret: there’s an extra-wow way we’ll be keeping warm this winter, and it starts with a gilet. Bodywarmer, sleeveless jacket, call it what you will: but this season gilets are hot, and they’re guaranteed to keep you snug – and seriously stylish – when the temperature drops. Adding super-luxe texture to any look, this season’s gilets are all about feel-me fabrics – faux fur, shearling or suede (the shaggier the better, we say) – to create depth and interest, but styling them can be tricky. Get it right, you’ll look like one chic chick; get it wrong, you’ll look like the local cat lady. The trick? Keeping the rest of your silhouette simple and streamlined. A long-sleeved top and second-skin trousers (bonus points for leather) will look effortlessly cool teamed with a contrasting centre-piece, while layering a frizzy faux fur gilet over a fitted maxi dress and cuban heels will create an inspired boho edge. We’ve picked out our favourite five gilets to help you on your way to warm this season – see below for our top picks. Isabel Marant Linka curly lambskin gilet, £2,870, available at Matches. Roland Mouret Sorcar vest, £1,485 £595, available at mytheresa. Fischer fur section gilet, £1,350, available at Harrods. Premium sheepskin gilet, £185, available at Topshop. Vince shearling drape gilet, £1,188, available at my-wardrobe.

First look: Topshop spring/summer 2012

It’s a strange concept that, when upping the heating by a few degrees and being stalked by dull skies, we should be thinking about spring, but alas, fashion is nothing if not far-out at times. And so it was that yesterday we were transported to far sunnier climes when we popped into Topshop’s press day to see what’s in store next season – and as the high street store presented its first stand-alone presentation (without the rest of the Arcadia group), temps were soaring to say the least. Split into four sections – festival, metallic luxe, tropical and scuba – you can expect to be wearing the following next season: candyfloss colours with ombre effects, cropped pastel knits, delicate lace dresses (often in acid shades), slathers of metallic silver, tropical prints and scuba details. Highlights include a cream chiffon maxi dress decorated with pink embroidery, a nude patent biker jacket that screams tough Upper East girl, ombre shades on silk trousers and a lightweight blazer, a shiny silver leather mac fit for a flight to the moon, an Eighties-bright tropical print blouse and an Erdem-esque floral printed silk top. Shoes, both heels and sandals, get the silver touch too, but the most impressive piece, perhaps, was Mary Katrantzou’s limited edition dress. As close to the designer’s mainline as it could possibly get, her signature prints and structured shapes have been translated across a 14 piece capsule collection set to hit stores next February. So far a colourful contrast print puff-ball dress is the only glimpse we’ve been given, but you can take our word that it’s likely to become Topshop’s most successful designer collaboration to date. We’re only allowed to share five images of Topshop’s new collection, so, naturally, we’ve tried to pack as many pieces into those pictures as […]

London Fashion Week SS12: Warehouse design winner

This is a guest post by Maria Pierides, one of our fabulous competition winners. She’s been hitting the tents at Somerset House as a guest fashion reporter for My Fashion Life to cover as many of London’s spring shows as she can make – find out how she got on when we armed her with a bag full of tickets and sent her packing… Who: Warehouse design competition winner Shivani Chavda What: The winner of the Warehouse design competition showcased her collection at the BFC show space at Somerset House. We saw an explosive, vibrant and exotic collection predominantly filled with billowing maxi dresses made from floaty, flowing fabrics. Fierce and fabulous! Highlights: Sometimes with technicolour, designers run the risk of making their garments look like they’ve collided with a rainbow but Chavda’s designs were anything but. Each colour was strategically placed sparingly; we loved the way she pulled it off. Lowlights: We wish more models had been hired to parade around the show space in Chavda’s gorgeous designs, because the rail they were hanging on in the back didn’t do them justice. Overall: We saw Shivani Chavda casually walking around the show space in Somerset House before the exhibition started and made a mental note to keep an eye on her and ask who she was wearing because we loved her dress. Little did we know that we’d stolen a few moments with the designer herself and she was showcasing one of her very own creations (top left). Emily Smeaton, the photography competition winner, was on hand to capture Chavda’s designs in the best way – she made each and every splash of colour almost jump off the page (or canvas, as it were) and the exhibition left a lasting impression on us.

After all, we reckon it’s pretty hot stateside right now. We love Gwyneth’s bohemian- inspired get up. But what do you guys think of her look at home? [poll id=”181″]

Beachwear for your body shape: Rectangle body shape

So we’ve covered the Apple body shape. Now for the rectangle. For the leaner ladies sporting a ‘surfboard’ physique, save for bosoms and the illusion of a derrière; welcome to the rectangle shaped world. Yours is the figure most women want, albeit you crave J-Lo-esque curves to avoid looking uncannily like the latest Royal family addition. Rectangle shapes are by far the least difficult for beach dressing. Your lean, muscular build and longer legs look fantastic in racy bikinis and sexy swimsuits. You do, however, have  a less defined waist, but with the right pieces a perfect silhouette can be created which accentuates your naturally athletic or ‘boyish’ shape to give the illusion of a more curvaceous frame. The key with rectangle body shapes is to define the waist to give the illusion of a fuller top and bottom half. Create emphasis on the bust and hips by opting for bikins in bolder prints; add ruffles for volume and taper at the waist to create a more defined silhouette. Take your pick from our curve creating top pieces to hit the beach in… Marc by Marc Jacobs ruffle bandeau bikini, £170 £109, available at mytheresa.com   Zimmerman Titanium copycat silk playsuit, £189 £94, available at my-wardrobe.com Zimmerman Sapphire copycat ruched corset one piece, £234 £140, available at my-wardrobe.com   Tibi paisley ruffle maxi dress, £540, £270, available at my-wardrobe.com                      Zimmerman Ebony rose print triangle bikini, £149 £74, available at my-wardrobe.com

Kate Hudson shines in yellow Versace

Kate Hudson could easily release a book on pretty pregnant style.  From the marathon of stylish outfits she’s worn recently, it’d undoubtedly be a best seller amongst mums-to-be. And at the world premiere of her new movie Something Borrowed Ms. Hudson pulled out all the stops. Wearing a stunning soft canary yellow maxi dress from Versace’s latest collection she managed to look chic and comfortable, demonstrating, once again, that being in your third trimester needn’t mean your style should suffer. The cut and colour are perfect for her growing bump, but we’re also loving the bright blue cocktail ring and cute clutch she accessorised with – and the brand new $300,000 engagement ring from fiancee Matt Belamy on the other hand isn’t bad either. Yep, all’s good in Ms Hudson’s hood. [poll id=”103″]

Caterina Gatta’s Italian quirk has got us wanting autumn now

After graduating in Science of Fashion and Costume at La Sapienza University in Rome, Italian fashion designer Caterina Gatta has come a long way since her studying days. In 2008 the 27-year-old designer set up her own Caterina Gatta trademark project and later showed her first stand-alone collection at Soho House in New York in May 2009 – and ever since, she’s pronounced her unique stance on style to the fashion world. Her love for all things vintage inspired Caterina to create clothes made entirely from recycled designer fabrics – Gianni Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Fausto Sarli, Pierre Cardin, Lancetti, Irene Galitzine, Givenchy, Valentino, André Laug, Ungaro, Scherrer and Clara Centinaro to name a few. Her passion for futurism, traditional textiles, bold colours, unusual fabrics and intricate patterns has lead this young designer to create typically creative Italian clothes people the world over will gladly welcome into their wardrobes – and we’re already compiling our autumn wish-list. With vibrant, playful prints across Sixties minis, damask patterns on structured full-hip dresses and rich, decadent colour splashes on sheer, fluid floor-length gowns, Gatta’s signature gathering and draping is used to full effect in one of the most diverse collections we’ve seen next season – though we’d happily wear it all now. If you fancy ultra-cool silk maxi dresses, cashmere brocades, Yves Saint Laurent cut blouses or a Valentino printed fence dress for fall, we suggest checking out Caterina Gatta at FadMashion.com. Vanessa Hudgens is a Seventies siren in animal print

If Zac Efron had broken up with us, we’d probably be a snivelling mess surviving on wine and snot. Vanessa Hudgens is a trooper, though. Not only has she been hitting the town in LA a lot since their split, she’s been doing it in style. Spotted in West Hollywood last week, the High School Musical star dined at trendy restaurant BOA to celebrate pal and fellow actress Brittany Snow’s 25th birthday, and showing absolutely no sign of a broken heart, she worked the boho chic style she’s become famed for in a leopard print maxi dress. She looked relaxed with her dark locks loosely tied-up and by accessorising with stacks of gold jewellery – we’re totally digging that arm band – and peep-toe platforms, she added a disco glam vibe to the look. Kudos to Vanessa, who’s just inspired our entire summer wardrobe…Zac who? [poll id=”55″]

Milan Fashion Week AW11: Just Cavalli and Giorgio Armani

One iconic designer to bring Milan Fashion Week to an end yesterday was Roberto Cavalli and his Just Cavalli womenswear collection for autumn/winter 2011. Reminiscent of glamorous hippies in tiered chiffon dresses with cherry print detailing, ruffled necklines and flowing capped sleeves, Cavalli painted a picture of perfect feminine innocence for next season. Sheepskin-trimmed denim jackets and shaggy mammoth fur shawls gave way to a strong Mongolian theme, while A-line denim skirts and high-waisted flared jeans made for a distinct Seventies vibe. But fear not, Cavalli didn’t forget his beloved leopard print and that signature flare could be seen on long flowing maxi dresses come the end of the show – phew! Last but not least on yesterday’s runway was Giorgio Armani and his latest collection of classic autumn silhouettes – with an alluring feminine aura. With cropped ankle trousers making a profound statement for the Armani woman this winter alongside Perspex heels, jewelled stilettos, feathered jackets, quilted three-quarter length coats, glittering princess dresses, scalloped tops, tunic dresses and even a playful T-shirt dress that celebrated a Fifties icon. A predominantly black colour scheme took hold of the collection, while splashes of powder pink and orange hues here and there gave a hint of colour, making way for a very delicate autumn wardrobe indeed.

London Fashion Week AW11: Peter Pilotto

Who: Peter Pillotto What: Twisting and draping, tough tailoring and graphic prints. Thoughts: A tougher and sharper take on their sporty looks from last season, Christopher De Vos and Peter Pilotto unveiled a new angle for their autumn/winter 2011 collection. In a striking pallette of black, white, red, yellow and blue, the floor-length dresses and sleek seperates had a harder edge.  The duo provided an elegant mix of the clever twisting and draping they’ve become known for on maxi dresses, which were then sharply opposed by the tough tailoring and military coats that came on top. With most of the hems hitting the floor, the collection showed these anti-mini lengths have certainly got some staying power, but peep-hole gaps and splits add an exciting element, whilst the chain print checks and stark colour pallette tied all the looks together. Making a wool cardigan seem like a fresh, original piece takes some doing, but Peter Pilotto pulled it off with these punky wearable designs – refinement and evolution.

London Fashion Week AW11: Issa

Who: Issa London What: All things animalistic and tangarine separates. Thoughts: Undeniably well crafted, Issa’s autumn/winter collection is decidedly Seventies-inspired. With stunning peacock print maxi dresses and others with a retro coloured chain print, daring splashes of vivid colour – aqua and tangerine, in particular, appearing on fluid floor-length dresses and a princess coat – made a striking statement on the runway. Signature draping, pencil skirts, leather gloves and even a Robin Hood-inspired cap with a structured feather-shaped adornment that became a dominant accessory throughout the collection added a chic and utterly feminine edge. Capturing the true spirit of season-appropriate Seventies glam – helped by guest appearances from Yasmin Le Bon in a curve-hugging silk pencil skirt and Andrea Dellal in a statement tomato dress – we’re particularly fond of the warm cranberry and leafy green colour palette and bold Brazilian brights Daniella Helayel’s offering for autumn. Though it’s not among our favourites, it’s a strong collection from Issa nonetheless – but we know what you’re all wondering, and no, she didn’t turn up. [Images]

London Fashion Week AW11: Holly Fulton

Who: Holly Fulton What: A geometric delight in tropical brights topped off with a trimming of black fur. Thoughts: Holly Fulton’s autumn/winter 2011 runway show at Somerset House this morning was, unsurprisingly, a lot more colourful than the monochromatic collections we’ve been seeing so far this season – so much so, in fact, it could’ve passed for a spring line. Packed to the brim with the likes of Daphne Guinness, Samantha Cameron and Hilary Alexander, the BFC Show Space played host to a truly fantastic show with neon yellow geo-tastic shift dresses, black and white futuristic prints and fluffy pom pom skirts that bounced to the beat of the music. Silk Japanese-inspired maxi dresses had vivid digital prints, textured wool shifts have nude patent leather trimmings – some with sharp gold studs for added edge or decadent mohair skirts – whilst azure separates, splashes of yellow and leather accents match the Sixties-inspired PVC mini frocks, making one heck of a tropic-packed treat for autumn. In store for SS11: Browns

Browns’ new-season press day allowed us a little sneak peek into its new collections for spring/summer 2011, and boy were the pieces something to get excited about – especially the collaboration of Club Monaco and their new line for the one-stop fashion shop. If the rails were anything to go by, leopard print appears to be sticking around for yet another season – we’re beginning to think it’s never going to go away, not that we want it to, of course – this time worked across delicate dresses, lightweight jackets and accessories. We couldn’t think of a more appropriate garment for summer than a long, floaty maxi dress – we’re getting excited already – and Browns has styles a-plenty from chiffons to silks and jerseys. The obvious white lace and ruffle chiffon garments are set to grace the shelves at Browns- the breezier the better, in our opinion – but what we are surprised about is the fact that shearling is staying put for spring. Granted, the sheepskin only appears on a selection of handbags, but there’s just something about that wooly material that shouts winter comfort, non? Nevertheless, we look forward to seeing how the tough texture will work with feminine fabrics next season, and if we’re proved wrong, we shall admit defeat.

Florence Welch in YSL

Looking as stunning as ever, Florence Welch stayed true to her stylish tendencies by wearing head-to-toe YSL at the 2010 Q Awards on Monday – the British singer certainly turned up the fashion heat at Grosvenor House, as well as winning two awards for her band. Ditching her trademark floral maxi dress, the bohemian beauty opted for a more gothic-inspired look for the event in a black and white tulle skirt, which flattered her pale pins perfectly, giving a cool contrast of colour. The sheer ruffle-collared blouse gave a youthful look to the outfit, too, allowing a sneakily sexy lace corset to show through – a subtle alternative to spring’s underwear as outerwear trend. We have to admit that we do have a slight tendency to go weak at the knees when it comes to ginger-haired pale women – they just look so striking, non? So it’s really no wonder we’re extremely fond of Florence Welch, especially in all-out YSL.

London Fashion Week SS11: Kinder Aggugini

A travel book called ‘Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa’ inspired Kinder Aggugini’s collection. With the animal tusk framed catwalk set up and a soundtrack that screamed Out of Africa. The first model strutted down the catwalk. Following a safari theme the first look out was a double-buckled kilt and white blouse that opened to reveal a thick tribal black neckpiece. It then continued onto Linen trousers and jackets with raw edges and shirt dresses with patch pockets. As the show went on keeping to the Africa theme the designs reached a more tribal feel with lots of silk draped dresses and bright vibrant prints. With nipped in waists and cowl necklines some dresses had been cut to look as if they had literally been knotted together giving it all a very elegant element. It then got a bit into evening wear with black dresses containing lots of fringing with hints of animal print here and there. But our favourite was the stunning floaty maxi dresses. With splits in the middle, at the front, showing lots of leg and revealing brightly patterned lining’s that clashed beautifully with the original tie-dye print. Accessories followed the African theme – including oversized leather hoop earrings, graphic belts, stacked choker necklaces and chunky metal bangles. The eye turning headpieces (made by Stephen Jones) were the highlight of the show. The hats in the show were made from used cardboard boxes and newspaper giving the collection a quirky touch. To summarise, the great mix of eras and culture made the collection totally chic!

London Fashion Week SS11: Twenty8Twelve

Sienna and Savannah Miller took their label Twenty8Twelve back to its roots for Spring/Summer 2011. That would be 2007 then ladies..right? Apparently not. According to the show press release, Twenty8Twelve is actually rooted in 1950’s Americana and it’s romantic spirit of travel- as captured in the Jack Kerouac novel ‘On The Road.’ There was indeed something quite fanciful about the girls seen on the London catwalk. Denim skater shirts and ruffled high neck blouses formed a Western basis for our travelling bohemian (incidentally, all the models were Sienna identikits) where cotton and crochet underlays swirled below. Prints were supposed to be eclectic, with maxi dresses having an Aztec vibe, and scattered through the collection as if sourced from global trips ad hoc. The eclectic mix of looks worked- but perhaps not as the clear concept Miller and Miller intended. McCartney-esque loose knit shifts and high waisted culottes were more urban basics than ethnic warrior, but the collection appeared all the better for it. A lime lace shift dress was gorgeous to see (if a little unexpected), and some of the scalloped micro shorts and waistcoat dresses were well constructed. Sienna and sis are definitely experimenting with more techniques these days- as fringing, ruffles and asymmetry all perked up simple body con dresses and button through shirts. Colours were wholly muted, with khaki, denim blues and dusty creams mixed in with white and the odd burst of lemon. Twenty8Twelve scored London footwear label Gina as an official Spring/Summer partner, and the glitter bow heels and sandals were exactly the fun flippant pairing the girls wanted. As we sat watching a media scrum erupt over Pixie Geldof on the front row (she got even more attention than Jude!), and thinking about the cupcakes we spied by the door, we had no idea […]
