Five minutes with model and designer Lisa Butcher

At just 15-years-old, Lisa Butcher started life out as model. After winning British ELLE’s first modelling competition back in 1987, she was dubbed the ‘Face of the 90s’ by royal photographer Norman Parkinson and went on to star in campaigns for major brands including Ralph Lauren, Yves Saint Laurent and Max Factor. Sticking with the fashion theme, Lisa also presented the first series of hit TV show Britain’s Next Top Model and worked alongside Mica Paris on BBC’s What Not To Wear, following the departure of the (rather terrifying) Trinny and Susannah. And now? Well, it seems the British beauty can add a few more strings to her stylish bow, as she is currently a designer and ambassador for tall-fashion specialist, Long Tall Sally. We caught up with Lisa after the launch of Long Tall Sally’s very first National Stand Tall Week to find out more about her involvement with the brand and to see what advice she could give to tall ladies out there who might struggle when it comes to shopping on the high-street. How did your collaboration with Long Tall Sally come about? Long tall Sally approached me after the second series of What Not To Wear. I had heard of the brand before, but felt the collections could be stronger. As it happened, the Bennett Brothers – who turned around Oasis and Phase Eight amongst other brands – had just bought out the business and wanted to create a totally new image for Long Tall Sally, so I jumped at the chance to work with them as they have such great reputations. I asked if I could have a go at designing, and it proved really successful and has just grown from there. Plus, it’s also loads of fun! As a designer and ambassador for Long […]

ASOS Access All Areas: SS10

Spring has finally sprung – cor we’ve heard that a lot lately, but last week we did notice the sun’s effort to shine– which means the hunt for our summer wardrobe has well and truly begun. So when we received an invite from ASOS to their Access All Areas event, which promised to flaunt the finest spring frippery we ever did see (and give us the chance to try it) we jumped for joy. Literally, though it may have been more of a bounce, we can’t quite remember now. Well, what a stylish soiree it was. With the high summer collection lining the walls, we rummaged through rails of nude chiffons, tribal prints bold and blurred, sequin-embellished dresses, luxe sportswear and maxi dresses, and oohed and ahhed over an assortment of statement accessories and possibly the most fashionable footwear we’ve yet to lay eyes on this season (we’re talking lace-up shoeboots, wooden stack heels, tan suede peeptoes fit for a rodeo queen and all that drool-worthy jazz). Actually, looking back at the over-size woven leather clutches, bucket bags and fab fringed satchels, we’d go as far as saying the accessories stole the show. Anyway back to our story. Have we got to the part about the canapes yet? We ate lots of those, yummy things they were, and we also supped too much champers. But back to business. So as we fought our way to our favourite pieces – a pair of tailored black suede shorts (sadly not in our size), a cropped holepunched soft sweater and a nude contrast-panel chiffon zip-back top alongside a maxidress or two, FYI – we grabbed what we loved (or what fitted) and headed for a photoshoot via a quick-fix makeover from Illamasqua and hairstylist Han (big hair guru). Yes yes yes we know […]

Lipsy SS2010 Press Day

Having already picked out the Lipsy Ruched Mac as one of our Lunchtime buys, I was excited to see what else the high street – and celebrity – favourite had in store for spring/summer 2010, at their press day this Thursday. While chomping on delicious canapes, I was pleasantly surprised at the womenswear on show. I saw said Ruched Mac (which might I add, is even better up close) and was also immediately struck by a mini bandeau dress that looks almost as if it has stepped off from the Alexander McQueen runway. Aside from the stones around the middle… but the less said about that, the better. The Brit designers are the way forward this season it seems, as Christopher Kane’s pale blue and white gingham print also made it onto a light, summery halter dress. Further inspiration came from Dolce and Gabbana’s floral, boudouir theme while spring’s muted tones popped up in Lipsy’s Grecian Goddess section, featuring nude lace and tulle skirts and a light Peter Pilloto-esque printed dress. As well as a Limited Edition collection (which will become available both in selected stores and online) featuring more luxurious fabrics, Lipsy have come up with a small range of slinky jersey vests, something which is completely new for the young, British brand. For the festival months, we can expect a smattering of denim, floral maxi dresses and fringing while the summer season offers bikini brights in tribal prints. Accessories will come in either nude colours, including large, floral headbands to match the flirty romantic theme, or in bright, feather earrings; pink cameo’s and oversized beads, to form a young, holiday-inspired selection. Other notable pieces include high-heeled clogs; a range of black, studded and zipped handbags and some rather lovely, pink strappy sandals. Lipsy’s spring 2010 range is available […]

Five minutes with model-come-designer Caprice

She’s made her mark as one of Britain’s most prolific lingerie models since her move from California to the UK fourteen years ago. Now, as she enters her second season as designer for the all-new online shopping site Very.co.uk, we took the chance to catch up with Caprice to hear all about her new collection, her inspirations, and her role as designer. This isn’t your first delve into design; can you tell us how you came to your role as designer in the first place? It kind of started with my lingerie at Debenhams and I saw how rich I was getting so I thought, ‘I can do this myself’. So I bought back my license with a quarter of a million pounds to open the doors, and that started four years ago; but of course with designing you’re always working ahead so it probably went on shop floors about three years ago. And we’re doing really well, we don’t have any debt or anything like that so I’m really happy. What is it about the Very brand that appeals to you? I think it’s modern, young, very accessible, and it’s one of my best clients , I have a really loyal customer base through Very. It’s at a great price point, too; is that something you’re conscious of as a designer , making your collections accessible? There are two reasons for that: First is I have to look at my target market and that, for me, is mass market. I wanted to create a product that looks expensive but is very affordable. Especially in the current economic climate; people just aren’t compulsive buying any more, that’s been done. So let’s talk about your new collection , what can we expect? It’s very bright, summery, sexy, feminine; there’s lots of […]

Top 5 Asymmetrical party picks

Top 5 sequin party picks

The festive season just wouldn’t be complete without a sprinkle of sequins now, would it? Last year saw stores decorated with an abundance of the metallic shine that we are so easily drawn to and this winter it seems that little has changed. As long-time sequin lovers, we are certainly not complaining. See below for designers that embraced the sparkle, and our top 5 picks for festive sequin dressing: 3.1 Philip Lim Some of the most memorable pieces from Phillip Lim’s collection were those showered with gold sequins, which makes his fall collection one of MFL’s favourites. Lim’s wearable look teamed sequins with short hemlines and tailored trousers. The perfect take on sexy androgyny. Matthew Williamson Matthew Williamson went down an alternative route, discovering boho bling with his sequinned maxi dress. A surprising success, Williamson managed to apply his colour techniques to the material, creating a gorgeous mix of gold and blue. Whoever knew sequins could go sienna style? Balmain Not for the faint-hearted, Balmain’s teeny tiny dresses have caused quite a stir , or rather, ‘Balmania’ , among fashionistas. Loud and proud (although not to the extent of Ashish’s neon, sequinned, animal print trousers) was the name of the game for Christophe Decarnin this season, with a range of look-at-me body-con pieces ready for that 80s disco. Our Top 5 sequinned party picks: Paul & Joe Twilight sequin jacket £530 available from Net-a-Porter Sequin Houston Bandeau dress £95 available from Net-a-Porter La Petite S***** Draped silk sequin dress £995 available from Net-a-Porter Malene Birger Satin Embellished Clutch £200 available from My-Wardrobe

First look: Kate Moss for Topshop Christmas collection

Getting in the festive spirit when we’re still in October poses a few problems for us, but we’ve seen something that might just help us: Kate Moss for Topshop Christmas collection. And it launches tomorrow. Her previous Christmas collections have left us a little unsure, but this one has definitely got our attention. The collection offers an assortment of luxurious oriental-inspired pieces for day and evening wear that have been designed to make you feel fabulously festive… and a little exotic. Influenced by traditional Chinese and Japanese clothing, the collection fuses the old with the new as silk dresses take on an A/W09 update with gunmetal lurex knitwork and chiffon blouses promise prints of bamboo, lotus flowers and fireworks to reflect the richness of the orient. Basic knitwear is given a glamorous edge with lurex striped shrugs and sequinned knit waistcoats, and Kate brings her laid-back rock ‘n’ roll glamour to key pieces including a sequinned bandeau maxi dress, a strapless mini embellished with black mesh petals and gold beads, an ostrich feather-sleeved shift dress and a one-shouldered long-sleeved oriental sequinned dress – our favourite piece. It all sounds so sumptuous, doesn’t it? But the Christmas collection plays it cool, too, following on from last season with sharp tailoring in the form of pencil skirts and Victoriana jackets. What’s exciting this time, though, is not only the return of Kate’s vintage-inspired silk and chiffon lingerie, which will preview exclusively online but the debut of her luxury nightwear. We’re eyeing up the floral silk pyjamas that come in a matching drawstring bag, perfect Christmas present, anyone? “I love beautiful nightwear, it makes you feel great, said Kate, who recently starred in James Brown’s documentary. I’ve collected millions of vintage slips, nighties, camis and bed jackets. Who doesn’t want fab nightwear for […]

Five minutes with Olivia Rubin

It’s difficult not to feel overwhelmed after fashion month. All those shows, all those new clothes and all those new designers to choose from. But in London one woman has been quietly forging a name for herself, emerging slowly from under the radar to become a firm favourite with London-based fashion editors and the girls at Vogue. Olivia Rubin is a graduate of the infamous Central St Martins fashion school, the college that gave us Luella Bartley, Hussein Chalayan, Giles Deacon and John Galliano among many, many others. At 27, Rubin has already worked with Jaques Azagury and fellow Brits Alexander McQueen and John Galliano. Her own line hit our radar when she was shortlisted for the semi-final of Fashion Fringe 2007 and 2008 and has gathered a list of fashion savvy celebrity fans that most designers would kill for including Lily Allen and M.I.A. In past collections, Rubin has specialised in creating urban-inspired graphic prints on architectural shapes, which in other hands would be scary but in hers is soft and flattering – girly without the schmaltz. Her oversized brick print has become something of a signature, floating around the body on simple charcoal grey shifts, chiffon dresses and peach maxi dresses (the charcoal brick print shift has been on our wishlist for ages as has her brick embroidery print tunic). We managed to grab five minutes with Rubin to find out more about what drives her…

London Fashion Week SS10: Ashley Isham

So lucky me managed to grab a front row seat at the Ashley Isham show today. The dress designer, who has showed at London Fashion Week nine times, put on a lively show with music from Kasabian and Florence and the Machine. It was clearly a show of two halves , for me, at least; the first was rather vivid, full of bold exotic prints, bright colours and jewels galore, whilst the second half took a gentle turn, and embraced a palette of soft nudes, creams and pale golds , toughened up with hints of black. The dresses may have varied, but the accessories remained the same throughout. Gold sky scraper platforms accompanied each piece, jewellery adorned the hair of almost every model, and gems were a statement fixture on many of his pieces.

Models strutted down the catwalk to pounding music, dimmed lights and a flash of cameras as they made it to the end of the runway. There were numerous trends which continued to repeat themselves not only throughout the designers attending the same Universities but as a theme throughout the schools.

Halston goes digital at Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week kicks off tomorrow and it has been hitting the headlines almost daily for the past few weeks. First designers were pulling out, then they were opting for catwalk shows without catwalks, then Barbie and condoms appeared, and of course New York Fashion Week’s new home was announced. Yes, it is one busy fashion week, and now there’s more news, this time thanks to Halston. We thought Temperley and Betsey Johnson were pairing things back, but it’s nothing compared to the relaunched brand Halston. They’re not having a catwalk, a party, a private view; they’re not even going to have goodie bags! Instead the brand have created a digital music video that is going to be… wait for it… emailed to a select list of fashion types tomorrow. The video will feature Dree Hemingway acting out a modern Halston lover as she flaunts around NYC of course wearing the Autumn/Winter 09 collection, the image above is a snapshot from the film. Talking about this more unusual step, board member Tamara Mellon explained: “Everything is so fast now, and everyone sees the shows on Style.com. By the time it’s in stores, they have seen the next season. We thought this is another way forward. Particularly now, with the economic climate, a lot of people’s budgets will be cut and many won’t be traveling to see the shows, and this is a way to be inclusive. Although the president from Halston, Bonnie Takhar, was quick to add that it had been planned since September and was not because of the credit crunch. Yeah sure, we believe you. The video has been made by trendy production companies Blink Productions and Colonel Blimp, think Lily Allen and Jarvis Cocker. So it should look very ‘on-trend’. But I have been wondering, if […]

Etam heats up thanks to Natalia Vodianova

How many of you ever shopped in Tammy Girl? It was the place we all headed to as young teenagers to end up looking like rejects from Blossom, or the long lost cousin of a Spice Girl. Yes Tammy Girl was for a time a British Institution, and Etam was its’ big sister. Etam, is nothing to write home about, it was a fashion shop, not cutting edge, not terrible. It eventually fell into difficulties and was bought by our favourite fashion tycoon Natalia Vodianova has become the face of the Etam. In a star studded catwalk show at the glamorous Ritz in Paris, Natalia’s line ingeniously titled Natalia pour Etam, was witnessed in all it’s glory by the likes of Eva Herzigova and Charlotte Casiraghi. The collection includes swimwear, lingerie and nightwear and is reasonably priced with top end being around $80. The line will launch in store from April and a further collection is expected later. The collection is wearable and stylish, with a gorgeous beach maxi dress and silk pyjamas stealing the limelight. It is still quite bizarre to see Etam connected with such high glamour. But one thing I do wonder, when are the celebrity fashion links ups going to end? When will designers take back the reigns under their own names? I’m finding the constant

NY Fashion Week: Nothing New but Wearable

However I do crave exciting, fresh new takes, but so far I feel slightly let down by what I’ve seen from certain designers. Collections from Jason Wu, Vena Cava, Charlotte Ronson and Erin Fetherston were pretty, cute, wearable (which is always good) but dare I say boring? It appears that there is a fear to experiment and a preference to submit to the powers that be, by producing collections certain to make it in the so called important magazines. Charlotte Ronson (see image above) gave us a commercial, girly, feminine collection with a healthy mix of shorts, dresses and slim fitted trousers.

Empowerment Through Style: The Intersection Of Fashion And Breast Augmentation

In the realm of fashion, style is more than just about keeping up with trends or adhering to societal norms. It’s a powerful tool for self-expression, confidence building, and personal empowerment. This is especially true for women who’ve undergone breast augmentation, a procedure that can significantly impact, in a positive light, their body image and self-esteem. Read on to learn more about fashion, breast augmentation, how those two are related, and much more.  Fashion As A Form of Self-Expression Fashion provides women with an avenue to showcase their unique personalities, preferences, and cultural backgrounds. Through the careful selection of clothing, accessories, hairstyles, and many more, women can curate an outward appearance that reflects their inner selves. This ability to express oneself authentically fosters a sense of empowerment and individuality. Breast Augmentation And One’s Perception of Self And Body Image For many women, breast augmentation serves as a means to enhance their physical appearance and achieve a desired body image. A licensed and board-certified cosmetic surgeon can help individuals by performing a two hour-long procedure that enhances breast shape and projection.  The procedure can address concerns related to breast size, shape, and symmetry, leading to increased satisfaction with one’s physical form. This newfound confidence can positively impact various aspects of life, including personal relationships, career aspirations, and overall well-being. Experts believe that there’s a psychological impact on individuals that undergo breast augmentation procedure. There are studies that are published on respectable medical journals that’ve shown that women who undergo the procedure often experience increased levels of confidence, self-esteem, and body satisfaction. Furthermore, breast augmentation procedure is considered a form of gender-affirming care individuals like transgender people find very helpful and lifesaving.  The Intersection Of Fashion And Breast Augmentation The combination of fashion and breast augmentation creates a synergistic effect that amplifies […]

Immediately get rid of anything that: Be sure to check jacket pockets, purses, and bags for items like lone gloves or hats and reunite any sets. Check underwear and sock drawers and discard any with holes, tears, or elastic that has lost its stretch. Categorize and Organize Your Closet Next, thoroughly go through everything that remains in your wardrobe and thoughtfully organize your closet by clothing category – shirts, pants, dresses, sweaters, jackets, etc. Hanging or shelving […]

This complete guide covers everything you need to know to purchase, cook with, and reap the numerous wellness advantages of high-quality extra virgin olive oil. What Exactly is EVOO (Extra-Virgin Olive Oil)? EVOO stands for “extra virgin olive oil.” It’s the highest quality and purest grade of olive oil you can buy. According to Cynthia Kimball, chef and author of The Complete Mediterranean Cookbook, “The ‘extra virgin’ label means you’re getting the freshest, purest olive oil for peak nutrition and taste. It’s the only cooking oil I keep in my kitchen.” Is EVOO the same as regular olive oil EVOO differs from regular olive oil in that it comes from the first olive pressing only. In contrast, regular olive oil may contain a blend of refined and virgin olive oils.
