The Design of the Year awards wouldn’t feel right without Kate Middleton’s Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen wedding dress making an appearance on the nominations list would they? 

While we’d usually be pretty confident that Sarah Burton would walk away with the award without a shadow of a doubt (as the wedding dress could easily win a Design of the Century award if such a category existed), this time we’re not so sure.

Sarah Burton has some fierce competition for the accolade, with the majority of the nominees in the ‘fashion’ category being worthy winners in their own right. Some of the other creations nominated include the record-breaking Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty exhibit at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Vivienne Westwood’s autumn/winter 2011 Ethical Fashion Africa collection, among many (equally incredible!) others.

We do not want to be in the room when the decision is being made… where on earth would you even start?

The winners will be announced on April 24th at an awards ceremony held at the Design Museum . Good luck to everyone !

Sigh – where to start narrowing down our favourite shoegasms? We could have easily done a lucky dip and picked five pairs out from one of those metaphorical hats and we’d still have five lush, lust-worthy pieces of foot candy.

The unique but iconic design or the sheer versatility of them? We’d happily pay £615 for a pair of shoes that can give both quirky yet deliciously feminine edges to a look.

After creating the wedding dress of the century for a certain Kate Middleton, Sarah Burton has designed yet another dress that has got everyone talking – this time, a dress made out of broken plates! 

A video was made to coincide with the opening of a brand new Alexander McQueen boutique in Beijing, and Sarah Burton can be heard talking about one of the most memorable pieces from the autumn/winter 2011 runway.

“We hand-painted 10 different plates,” she said. “Then we sort of dissected them as if it was broken, so we did a pattern like it was broken. Then we engineered the image onto a bodice. Then we handcut all the porcelain pieces out from the mould we had. Then we made each of those pieces again individually and numbered them. It was like a jigsaw puzzle.”

Sounds rather complicated, but we think you’ll agree the end result is worth it. Plus, it confirms what we already knew: Sarah Burton is an utter genius and is the perfect designer to enable Alexander McQueen’s legacy to live on.

The red carpet is all about the glamorous dress – but sometimes it’s nice to see something a little different, and the suit jacket is the perfect alternative.

As Mr Yves Saint Laurent, king of Le Smoking, would tell you, it can be a veritable winner in the style stakes if done correctly.

Sandra Bullock showed us the power of tuxedo in this Alexander McQueen spring/summer 2012 jacket and trouser combo. She was in New York last week to promote her new film Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and chose to wear this daring look on the red carpet.

We love the belt detailing on the jacket and the way it hugs Sandra’s waist. The slinky satin material also gave it an evening touch and prevented it from looking too ‘career woman’.

She accessorised with huge sparkly rings and a gorgeous silver clutch bag while her glossy straight hair and smoky eye completed her look with a certain je ne sais quoi.

It was a busy day for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge yesterday as not only did they dine with the royal family for a pre-Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace, but they then attended The Sun Military Awards at London’s Imperial War Museum.

Although a whole host of glamorous guests were in attendance, we have no doubt that all eyes would have been on Kate Middleton and her floor-length strapless velvet Alexander McQueen dress.

The accessorising was, in our opinion, unflawed – there was plenty of sparkle on show without it being jewellery overload. Even though Kate could have chosen to add a splash of colour to her outfit in terms of clutch bag or shoes, we think her decision to go for black accessories was rather brilliant, as it only showcased her gorgeous bling just that little bit more. And when you have glistening pink jewels around your neck, you’d be a fool to not show them off!

Based on everything we have seen this year we think it’s pretty safe to say that Alexander McQueen + Kate Middleton = ultimate winning formula.

Yes, this is the second magazine cover featuring Lady Gaga in just as many days but, as is the Gaga mantra, she always mixes it up. 

Yesterday we brought you the singer’s two Elle UK newsstand covers, where she looked a little more natural than perhaps we are used to, but looked stunning nonetheless. The natural theme seems to be a recurring one as far as Gaga January covers are concerned, as the war paint has come off for Vanity Fair’s photoshoot.

Styled by Nicola Formichetti under the fashion direction of Jessica Diehl and shot by the sometimes controversial photographer to the stars Annie Leibovitz, Lady Gaga is seen posing completely nude in one picture, while she wraps herself in pink fur with a ballerina-style up-do and barely there (by Gaga standards) make up in another. Lady Gaga is once again doing her bit for Alexander McQueen, posing in another fabulous creation fresh from the spring/summer 2012 catwalk.
