It’s getting towards the end of the year and we’ve been overcome by a sudden sense of contemplativeness. 

While New Year might bring resolutions, diets and silly foil hats, there’s something it also brings that we’re not ashamed to love – yes, best of lists!

Here at MFL we like a yearly round up just much as the next publication, but ours is, like, so much more fun because it involves clothes and celebrities. What’s not to love?

We took a look through the year’s celebrity style hits to sift out the best from the average. So, fasten your seatbelt, kids, here’s our run through of this year’s best dressed…

Alexa Chung in Miu Miu

Looking like a grown up school girl, we loved Alexa Chung’s Miu Miu ensemble at the label’s spring/summer 2012 show in Paris earlier this year – no wonder she scooped the Style Icon Award for a second year running!

Jessica Alba in Dolce & Gabbana

Jessica Alba rarely puts a foot out of place and looks so pretty at a Swarovski party in California. Her lace Dolce & Gabbana dress combined with lashings of gems reminded us why we love Jess so much.

Nicole Richie in Stella McCartney

Kick starting us into the festive mood this year, style queen Nicole Richie wowed us in her Stella McCartney poppy red skirt and sweater combo. Known for her laid-back boho style, she gave us a ladylike look we hadn’t seen from her in a long while.

Selena Gomez in Marchesa

Ladies and Gentlemen, the MFL award for Best Newcomer goes to 19-year-old Selena Gomez. Wearing this angelic Marchesa dress, she somehow looked girly and feminine whilst maintaining an air of sophistication. We predict big things!

Olivia Palermo in Tibi

Queen of accessorising, no best dressed is complete without Olivia Palermo. She’s given us so many hits this year, but her leather Tibi shorts, grey grandad shirt and satin emerald heels are an expert lesson in laid-back luxe.

Miranda Kerr in Michael Kors

Yeah we know, it’s a hard life for Miranda Kerr – she has to travel the world doing that modelling malarkey, is forced to put up this that Orlando Bloom fella and is required to wear designer clothes every day. Poor lamb. Even with all her woes she always manages to get it spot on. We loved her in this pink strapless Michael Kors number.

Beyonce in J. Crew

If you don’t like Beyoncé there is something seriously wrong with you, girlfriend – she’s all kinds of fabulous, and the fact she’s expecting a baby Bey makes us love her even more. Never seen without her mountains of bling and uber-glam gowns on the red carpet, she always looks a treat. This sparkly gold number didn’t disappoint and is signature Beyoncé.

Anne Hathaway in Alexander McQueen

If this was the year of McQueen, Anne Hathaway definitely got the memo; the actress looked slick in this resort 2012 white lace dress.

Florence Welch in Gucci

Looking like an ethereal angel is not easy but Florence Welsh always manages to do it with absolute ease. Wearing this yellow silk chiffon from Gucci on her North American tour she proved she was one of the best dressed ladies in music…

Blake Lively in Dolce & Gabbana

Oh, Blake! Does she ever put a foot wrong? We loved her in this super-sexy black lace and floral bustier dress from Dolce & Gabbana, complete with clashing printed Louboutins.

Zac Posen is clearly getting into the Christmas party/awards season spirit if his pre-fall 2012 collection is anything to go by. Never have we seen one singular collection laden with so many enviable gowns, and we are beaming from ear to ear because of it.

We know that Zac Posen is one of the go-to designers if a fairytale-inspired red carpet worthy dress is what you’re after, and this collection was no exception.

As we keep reminding you, awards season is almost upon us, which is why we are keeping our beady eyes open for potential wow-factor dresses – and we are willing to bet good money that at least one A-lister will don one of these gowns at an awards ceremony next year.

According to Styleite, Zac Posen was apparently inspired by “American couture, Charles James and Cristobal Balenciaga” for this collection – and we can totally see where he is coming from, can’t you?

Not only are we congratulating all the winners of the British Fashion Awards this morning, but we are also raising our metaphorical glasses to the lovely Anne Hathaway, as she and her actor-turned-jewellery designer boyfriend of three years Adam Shulman have confirmed that they are engaged! 

Anne was seen wearing what looked like an engagement ring (adorned with Kwiat Heritage jewels) when she was out and about at the weekend, which sent rumours flying, but her spokesperson has since confirmed it to Us Weekly.

Anne and Adam started dating five months after she broke up with Raffaello Follieri – who pleaded guilty to 14 counts of money laundering, conspiracy and wire fraud – even though she vowed to stay single for a good while longer.

“I am very much in love with him, only Adam totally ruined my plan,” Anne told Marie Claire. “I was really actually looking forward to a little alone time, and then I fell in love like a fool!”

We are already beside ourselves with excitement as we envision her endless wedding dress possibilities. Miss Hathaway is no stranger to an elegant gown or two, as not only has she played the princess on more than one occasion, but she herself is regularly draped in the finest couture on the red carpets.

We know that both skin-tight dresses that complement her svelte figure and multi-layered fairy princess styles suit her frame, so her options really are endless.

Anne Hathaway always manages to work utter sophistication on the red carpet, and with her classic brunette locks and red lips, she seems to nail it every time.

So, when we saw the actress wearing a white tape ribbon embroidered dress from Alexander McQueen‘s resort 2012 collection, teamed with a white jaw skull clutch and hazelnut whipstitch peep toes, also by Alexander McQueen, we knew she’d made one hell of a style statement at the One Day premiere in London last week.

Finishing off with a cluster of pearl and gold bangles to match her clutch, Hathaway proves that there’s little need for overloading the accessories when you’re rocking a McQueen masterpiece. Instead, it’s the small touches – hair swept to one side, a subtle slick of pink lipstick – that make this work.

And, with lace being a big hit for next season, she’s simultaneously on trend to boot.

Our only quip? The dress length is a little tricky to pull off – go the whole way or chop it off just below the knee to avoid looking dumpy.

Super celeb stylist Rachel Zoe has had the honour of dressing some of the most famous names in showbiz – Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan and Mischa Barton are all graduates from her styling school – but not all fair so well on their own without her holy guidance (the less said about Mischa Barton’s dress sense these days the better), and it seems Anne Hathaway isn’t ready to fly from the nest just yet.

Ordinarily a ravishing red carpet darling – remember the eight outfit changes at the Oscars this year? (Zoe’s work) – we were truly disappointed to see her in an purple tasselled Gucci dress paired with big geeky frames better suited to Shoreditch than an LA premiere.

We’re not crazy about the shoes, either, but our biggest complaint has got to be the brassy highlights and the lazy ponytail. Hit the bottle, please Anne… (that’s the dye bottle, guys).

Forget Fifties waves and chic chignons (although they were still in abundance), there was only one hairstyle everyone was talking about at yesterday’s Oscars, and that was the humble pony tail.

Whether scraped back and sky high like Anne Hathaway, sleek like Nicole Kidman or backcombed and bouncy like Reese Witherspoon, the pony tails trotting the red carpet last night were a far cry from the school playground.

The carpet wasn’t the only thing that was red at last night’s Oscars – the stars were too.

Whether in pillar-box pigments like Sandra Bullock and Anne Hathaway, tomato tangs like Jennifer Hudson or minimalist styles like Jennifer Lawrence, statement scarlet was a hot hit on yesterday’s matching coloured-carpet.
