Polls: Beyonce’s Grammy Look

Why is Beyonce always hit or miss with her red carpet looks? She seems to inevitably show up in the sparkliest and tightest, over-the-top gowns she can get her hands on. Her look for the Grammys last night fit that gaudy mold to a tee. The glue-on glittery blue chiffon explosion made me cringe a little and had me wondering when she’s going to start wearing more classic couture, instead of costumey getups off stage.

With years of experience at award shows and a design label (a la House of Dereon) under her belt, isn’t about time that she figured out that bigger isn’t always better? At least her amazing performance with the legendary Tina Turner more than made up for her poor performance on the red carpet.

So the deal is this….menswear fashion week is underway and on Saturday it was the much anticipated Versace presentation. Beyoncé and Jay-Z along with pal Kelly Rowland made an appearance as special guests and of course were escorted to their front row seats. Also seated in the front row was Tommy Fazio, the men’s fashion director at Bergdorf Goodman. Without a seat was Beyoncé’s bodyguard who was forced to stand…shock, horror!

Beyoncé’s style

“I am very conscious of how I look and my image and how I am with people. I have a team and we’ve been working together since I was 15, so every show, every earring, every shade of eye shadow is all something that comes from me and my team.

I’m very much a perfectionist, and even before I was a pop star, or celebrity or whatever you want to call whatever I am, I was always that way. Always!” - Beyoncé talks to Elle

Tina won’t be questioned…

An unprepared Tina Knowles completely folded under questioning at a recent Macy’s press conference, to promote the launch of House of Dereon’s boutique in the store.

When asked by US consumer reporter for WBBM-TV Dorothy Tucker about the manufacturing problems with the product sizes, Tina Knowles abruptly cut her off and demanded that her question be cut out….

Tucker to Tina:

“They’re beautiful [clothes],” she started, “but the next question — I don’t quite understand it, and maybe you guys can explain it for me — your clothes are sold in about a dozen stores in the Chicago area. We did get a phone call from a couple of those stores who said they had to send the production back, that there was a poor fit, the tops weren’t …”

Tina to Tucker:

“Why would you, wait, wait, wait, we’re going to cut that off. Why would you do that? You’re here to interview us about the clothes, in a positive light.”

To say that Beyoncé looked extremely uncomfortable is an understatement…..

House of Dereon launches to a mixed reaction

So Beyonce’s new line is causing quite a stir, some think its way too expensive while others can’t get enough. Either way, many are talking about the debut of the House of Dereon.

Beyonce has released a statement saying,

” the aim is to fuse celebrity power and design artistry into a brand of global importance.”

Intending to offer affordable couture, furs, ready-to-wear, denim and casual sportswear, the line is named after her seamstress grandma and according to the bootylicious babe its theme is,

taking nothing and turning it into something because that’s what my grandmother did with all kinds of fabrics. She just turned everything into masterpieces, and that’s what my mother does.”

Could Beyonce be a bit deranged? Tina’s creations are far from masterpieces, more like god awful! Destiny Child’s style has drastically changed since they were released from wearing the nightmare that was Tina Knowles designs.

And they emerged more stylish and glam then ever….

It’s very likely her grandma did create something out of nothing but today, Miss and Mrs Knowles are far from doing they same. With a great deal of start up capital enabling them to invest in better fabrics than most, this really cant be what Beyonce’s referring to as nothing.

It’s bad enough she’s joined the whole celebrity cum fashion designer posse who are determined to take over the industry, but trying to justify it, with a lame grandma theme really doesn’t sound too good.

The collection isn’t as bad as Tina’s earlier work, but the House of Dereon hasn’t really made or added any creative differences to the industry. Nevertheless sales of the label probably won’t reflect this, and everyone will most likely run out to buy pieces because Miss Knowles supposedly designed it. Jeans are currently available for purchase on the site and are selling for approx. $100 each.

Fashion Rocked

Celebrations for New York Fashion week kicked off with Cond Nast’s Fashion Rocks at Radio City Music Hall. Recognising the relationship between fashion and music, and bringing together some of the biggest stars of both sectors, Fashion Rocks really rocked. None of the stars held back with their outfits.

Beyonce and Gwen Stefani didnt miss the promotional opportunity and used the event to model their lines. Destiny’s child attended the concert wearing designs from Beyonce’s and her mothers label “House of Dereon”, while Gwen wore a dress from her label L.A.M.B. Alicia Keys looked stunning in a beautiful tangerine dress by Max Azria.

Billy Idol, Duran Duran, David Bowie and Nelly were just a few of the names who performed on the night. Tim McGraw opened the evening with a performance of “My Old Friend” as a tribute to the victims in New Orleans, Louisana.

Although the concert was a success, the after party didnt get much praise and was slammed as being tasteless.
