English National Ballet is turning 60, and to celebrate its birthday milestone, must-read mag Marie Claire and renowned British designer Kinder Aggugini have collaborated to create a modern and magical take on three famous ballet costumes.

Making their debut in the magazine’s January issue (out now), Kinder’s designed three bespoke outfits for a trio of iconic female ballet characters: The Nutcracker‘s Sugar Plum Fairy, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, where tutus are looped with mohair and adorned with ribbons, and wisps of over-dyed chiffon are layered over floral embellishments and studded with crystals to create a modern fashion makeover.

And Aggugini, who’s worked for some of the most theatrical brands in fashion, varying from Vivienne Westwood to Versace, was the perfect choice for Marie Claire’s fashion forward collaboration.

“It was a dream come true,” said the young designer. “To have creative carte blanche was so exciting. I wanted to create something fresh for the dancer’s costumes in these traditional roles, getting away from the traditional.”

Victoria’s Secret is one of the most highly-anticipated catwalk shows in the industry, but would you recognise the name behind the high-octane costumes that compliment the lingerie? Probably not. High time, we think, to get acquainted with Georgia Hardinge.

The British designer teamed up with the luxury lingerie label to create three show-stopping couture costumes for its latest show last month – and though many before her have remained anonymous, Hardinge has earned herself a coveted ‘One to Watch’ title in the US from the collaboration.

And it’s her love of gothic architecture, her moulding technique and her unique understanding of art as fashion – “the highest approach of art awareness is through fashion,” she says – that allow her to create such intricately detailed pieces.

Take the camouflage cut-out winged body piece, the vintage floral poplin two piece or the geometrically encrusted Swarovski cage that made their debut strewn across the bodies of Angels at this year’s Victoria’s Secret show as a prime example.

For a girl who showcased her first full runway collection just three months ago, it’s not bad going. We suggest you keep your eye on this one.

The English National Ballet shall be performing in Chanel in a performance to celebrate dance company and founder of The English National Ballet, Ballet Russes. Karl Lagerfeld has specially designed a number of pieces for the performance including a tutu with wings for a rendition of The Dying Swan. And true to Chanel, Lagerfeld has created one costume, which is embellished with Coco's favourite flower camellias.

Has anyone watched The Duchess yet? Along with Brideshead revisited, The Duchess is one period drama that has us excited for one reason and one reason only, the costumes. The footage above gives a little insight into the planning behind the hair/makeup and Hayley Atwell – who plays Bess Foster – talks about the corsets which we can only imagine must have been a nightmare. Also Keira Knightley lets us into her secret agony with one wig in particular. Sadly costume designer for the movie Michael O’Connor isn’t featured, but the Telegraph has an interview with the man himself who put in a hell of a lot of research to get the wardrobe just right.
