Now that it’s officially Spring – even though the weather isn’t quite there yet – it’s time to start replenishing our wardrobes with fun pieces that make us smile. This aptly named “Start 2 Melt” dress by Twinkle is adorable and is definitely a piece your girlfriends will fawn over.

The geometric pattern gives the frock a mod vibe, while the striped accents at the hem and sleeves add a slight nautical flair. We love the dainty bows at the cuffs, the interesting colour palette, and the soft A-line shape. This signature fine-knit Twinkle piece would look great with leggings and ankle booties or a pair of wedge sandals. $279 available at Shopbop.com.

Call me crazy, but I just love finding clothes that make me go ‘huh?’ when I see them for the first time on a hanger.

The pieces could have intricate straps that criss-cross, be draped in ways that are tough to figure out, or have interesting design elements that don’t seem to go together at initial glance, but might just work when worn with confidence.

I love the color yellow and I always have, even before it was trendy (although I am not digging the supposed new trend of lemon yellow nailpolish … ick!). Anyway, chances are if you find a top, dress, bag, bracelet or sweater in a bright perky yellow, I will immediately want it. Which is exactly what happened when I saw this Milly Aspirin dot smock dress

Like me, you might be a bit hesitant to give the sheer trend a go this Spring/Summer, (there is always the inherent risk of looking cheap or inappropriate with the wrong material or design). Also, some of us might still be fighting the old connotation that sheer garments are only decoys to cover up less-than-toned arms or other bodily misgivings.

Dress Lust: M by MJ Clover Print Dress

So I was doing some research for something completely different and found this Marc by Marc Jacobs dress on Nordstrom.com from the Spring 2008 line. I was so distracted that I completely forgot what I was originally looking for and had to write this post. Just…just look at this dress!

Its high hemline is a modern take on the 1950s tea-party dress, and the yellow floral print is simply delightful. Normally I’d think the gem detailing and the bow were simply too much, too girly actually, but the slightly daring hemline and the intentionally messy styling of the model’s hair prevents the look from being too saccharine. At $698 I’ll probably have to settle for admiring this dress from afar, but for the moment I am completely under its spell!

With ombre (think refined tie-dye) all over the runways from Baby Phat to Louis Vuitton, this color bleeding technique is sure to be a big trend this Spring. With gradient party frocks. accessories (bags, shoes and hats) and even make-up palettes already hitting the shelves and the pages of our favorite fashion mags, it might just be time to start looking for a new and colourful addition to our wardrobe.

So it’s pretty clear that jewel tones and day glo colors are hot right now. From the runways to the red carpets, we’ve been blinded by the seriously intense hues radiating off of celebs and models alike (hello, Rihanna’s dress at the Grammys).

For us normal folk, it’s sort of scary to venture outside the comforts of our favourite neutrals and into the realm of coloured brights for next season.

Think Red: Jersey Pintucked dress by Vivienne Tam

vivienne_tam_bluefly.jpgWith Valentine’s Day right around the corner, we’ve already started thinking about the royal treatment we’re hoping to get from our special somebody. Long-stem roses…a box of decadent chocolates… perhaps even that necklace we’ve strategically been dropping hints about since Christmas… And if you’re like us, you’ve also started thinking about what to wear.

With the drone of winter carrying on seemingly to no end, the last thing we feel like doing is throwing on our LBD and blending into the gloomy landscape. Even though wearing red on Valentine’s Day seems a little trite, in the right fabric and silhouette, there’s almost nothing more stunning.

Absolutely airy and effortless looking, this colorblock tank dress from Thakoon’s pre-Spring collection makes us want to fast forward to warmer weather! The silk and chiffon frock is a great way to ease into the bright colour trend as the delicate and matte fabrics serve to soften and refine. If you’re feeling daring, wear this look with a pair of classic strappy gladiator sandals, or finish off with a cute pair of black pumps. $750 available at shopbop.com

We love the term “pour-me-into it” party dress as coined by Eric Wilson in his article for the NY Times. It illustrates so well all those dresses we’ve struggled to get into in the changing rooms…unable to accept that possibly we may just need to ask the assistant for a bigger size. It also aptly describes most of Beyonce’s red-carpet outfits and its the perfect term for this beautiful metallic silver dress from Antik Batik. This is just one of those dresses that you know will bring sexy back every time you wear it! £257, £154.20 available at mywardrobe.com
