Shoewars: Steve Madden vs Balenciaga

Imitation is the highest form of flattery, but I have to admit I’m confused as to why anyone would want to copy this Balenciaga sandal. Nevertheless, Steve Madden has with his “Bukled” Bright Multi peep-toe pump.

The Balenciaga version was slightly more tolerable as the lines of the shoe are more refined and delicate, but it still looks like something the Pink Power Ranger would wear for a night out on the town.

If the catwalks for Spring 08 are any indication, owning a pair of “statement shoes” will be the biggest fashion essential for the upcoming months. With sky-high heels that are more art than functional and with practicality completely gone out the window, designers have taken footwear to unchartered territory incorporating incredible levels of creativity and in some cases, bizarreness.

It’s slowly getting warmer outside and with that, we’re getting a step closer to stowing away our favourite knee high boots that were so hot for A/W in favour of something more suitable for Spring.

If it seems like ombre and snakeskin are everywhere lately … it’s because they are. Unlike other trends du jour that are kind of ridiculous (like toting bags around big enough to fit both Olsens inside), these trends are chic.

Ombre is a great way to add subtle visual interest to an otherwise blah outfit, while snakeskin strikes the perfect balance between fashionista and socialista.

Steep Vs. Cheap: Canvas Wedge Sandals

Platform wedge sandals are staples in my wardrobe. Being very petite, I love to crank myself up with 3-5” heels on a daily basis and am rarely found in flats. I will admit, however, that as I get older, it gets harder to trek around the city in sky-highs around the clock. Aching feet and caught heels in subway grates seem to get less justifiable over time.

If you’re looking to bust out your jellies after years of hibernation in the back of your closet, now’s your opportunity to dust them off…

I won’t lie and say that I never owned them, because I remember begging my mom for a pair of sparkly, cotton candy pink jellies when I was in grade school (and boy did I love them). But, as an adult, I find it a little odd to see reincarnations of these confectionary rubber shoes back on the market.

Last weekend during the only snowstorm of the year, my trusty Converse trainers broke. I was wondering why my toes were feeling damp, when I looked down and saw a crack the size of the Grand Canyon spreading southwards down the sole of my shoe.

I always hate when my shoes break, because they become like a close friend, trusty and steadfast. Now I need to get looking for another pair in time for my trip to Paris next week, but where do I look? And what style do I choose?

Brogues: Fancy Footwork

brogues_asos.jpgI don’t know about you, but a whole season later and I am still in love with brogues. Flat patent brogues, shoe-boot brogues, brogues with heels, and the list continues. So, you can imagine my excitement when I found out that not only were brogues still de rigueur for the summer, but they had also been tweaked to allow for that all-important Spring/Summer vibe.

The weird and wonderful peep-toe brogue. Number one on my list of must haves for the upcoming sunny season (along with gladiator sandals of course).
