Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 24 hours, you’ll probably be aware that the world is going crazy for Madonna’s truly spectacular halftime performance at the NFL Superbowl, but can you blame it? 

In a nutshell, Madonna’s performance – with appearances from Nicki Minaj and MIA – was outstanding on so many levels. Although Her Madgesty performed a highly energetic routine to brand new single Gimme All Your Luvin as well as some old Madonna classics, the thing that grabbed our attention the most was of course her stage wardrobe, most of which came courtesy of Givenchy.

The queen of pop was kitted out in some truly fabulous Haute Couture Givenchy gear, essentially looking like a modern day Cleopatra… with just a little bit more bling and extravagance, if that’s possible.

“Following my collaboration with Madonna on her last tour three years ago, it is a great honour for me to be a part of yet another historical and iconic moment,” Riccardo Tisci said. “People say everything has a limit, but limits do not exist with Madonna. I am so happy that, after being busy in other scenes, she decided to go back on a music stage. Not only to bring us music, but also to make such a statement of performance and fashion.”

This performance will undoubtedly go down in history and in a way, we kind of pity the act that has to follow next year… who do you think will be up to the challenge?

The best of Haute Couture spring/summer 2012
We don’t think it was a coincidence the Oscar nominations were out the same week as Couture Fashion Week. Our favourite shows came courtesy of Versace (Donatella’s first couture outing since January 2004), Chanel (which took place on a makeshift airplane) and Jean Paul Gaultier (who paid tribute to the late Amy Winehouse).

Admittedly, we were in two minds about how seriously to take this girl’s lingerie collection given her past, but upon hearing that Karl Lagerfeld himself lent his support and shot the entire lookbook, we instantly decided to give her a chance. 

She has been described by Kaiser Karl as “very French courtesan, like Liane de Pougy or the Belle Otéro”, but who is she?

Her name is Zahia Dehar, and if that name doesn’t ring any bells, we know the infamous French football scandal will. The now 19-year-old French beauty may have been at the centre of the scandal for being an underage escort, but it looks like she has put all that behind her to create a lingerie collection fit for the elite catwalks of Haute Couture Fashion Week in Paris. Not bad going!

Her designs do leave very little to the imagination though, as demonstrated by the piece above which is modelled by Zahia herself.

We’re really looking forward to seeing the official lookbook images when they emerge, just to see Karl Lagerfeld’s vision for the collection! Are you?

Jean Paul Gaultier has definitely taken his latest couture show in a different direction, with an original yet iconic tribute to late musical legend Amy Winehouse. We have a feeling this is going to be one of those catwalk moments that won’t be forgotten in fashion history.  

There was a nod to each of Amy’s signature outfits on the runway, not to mention her trademark beehive hairdo.

Naturally, music by the late singer echoed in the background as the models paraded up and down the catwalk with gravity defying hair pieces and a fashion accessory that almost always accompanied Ms Winehouse’s looks: a cigarette.

Not only do we love the whole notion behind the show, but the pieces are brilliant in their own right. We love JPG’s take on Amy’s non-Gaultier-ensembles, such as the tight-fitting Fred Perry dress, which he managed to mix up with his own take on the Fred Perry laurel. Genius!

And akin to any Jean Paul Gaultier collection, there was an abundance of corset style tops that you know the likes of Madonna and Lady Gaga will be all over!

Sure the dresses aren’t floor-sweeping and princess-like, but the show as a whole was groundbreaking, and if we’re being honest, is our favourite so far!

A power house like Chanel is inevitably going to be putting on one almighty show, so we weren’t in the least bit surprised with the extravagance of it all. You’d think a show at Paris’s Grand Palais would be grand enough… but not for Karl Lagerfeld.

Some very, very lucky people took to a makeshift airplane at the aforementioned venue, which was complete with Chanel trolley dollies and faux clouds. Well, you didn’t think Uncle Karl was going to do anything by halves, did you?

Akin to the blue sky outside of the airplane windows, the collection featured every single shade of the colour blue that you can imagine, although Karl was overheard saying that his obsession with the colour wasn’t because he was “feeling blue” himself, which is always good to hear.

Although there were no ultra-glam gowns worthy of the big awards ceremony red carpets (which is one thing we definitely expect from a couture collection) we don’t have a bad word to say about any of the pieces. No one can fault Karl Lagerfeld for sticking to classic silhouettes and structures, the way Chanel does best.

HOW is this only Giambattista Valli’s second couture collection? You’d think judging by the sheer intricacy of every single piece on the runway that Giambattista Valli had decades of couture experience under his belt, but as we reported at the end of last year, the Italain designer received couture status after just one collection! 

His models reportedly walked with ease down the catwalk at Paris’s Hotel de Crillon in the beautiful, versatile, and sometimes even instantly wearable pieces. As much as we adore extravagant couture gowns that are more like works of art than clothes, we loved how simple and wearable these designs actually were. We think we see a mini-trend emerging for Couture Fashion Week!

All of the designs were definitely created with the wow-factor in mind, as each and every one made some sort of a bold statement. Although the silhouettes were predominantly feminine and forgiving, most of the pieces came with cinched waists to add some Giambattista Valli-esque definition and structure.

In a word: incredible!

The models walked down the catwalk to the tune of Lana Del Rey’s Video Games in a predominantly monochrome, slightly minimalist collection, which is a far cry from what Christian Dior Haute Couture usually has in store for us. 

Yes, it was different to what we’re used to, but the collection couldn’t really be faulted, so we commend acting creative director Bill Gaytten for his fine efforts. It takes a brave man to step into John Galliano’s shoes, and considering he had the weight of the world (or Dior, at least) on his shoulders, we don’t think he cracked under the pressure. In fact, we think his collections get better and more evolved every season, so he must be doing something right.

“It’s meant to be x-ray Dior, ” Bill Gaytten said after the show. “All the structure of iconic Dior, thanks to lots of fittings, but all of it see-through. I haven’t slept for weeks… it’s been a lot of waking up at 3 am.”

The collection was comprised of sheer fabrics, full skirts and cinched waists and was generally a dramatic but understated display.
