Universal Model Management

by Michele Obi on July 18, 2005

“Universal Model Management is a company that cares, we do not over promise and under deliver, we simply provide what you want, when you want it, at the agreed price.”

It’s hard enough being a model let alone running a modeling agency, yet Suzannah Harvey, Director of Universal Model Management took the leap from model to entrepreneur and hasn’t looked back since. As the company enters its third year, Suzannah lets us into the highs and lows of the industry and what makes a model……

How and when did Universal Model Management Ltd begin?

Beginning of 2003, I got offered a fantastic opportunity to manage a huge motorsport contract, namely the BTCC Grid Girls. This basically gave me the boot up the butt to start my own business.

Can you tell us a bit about Universal and what differentiates it from other modelling agencies?

My agency is only as good as the models that work for me, and they do work exceptionally hard. I believe they go that extra mile for me as I know most of them personally having modelled myself for the last 10 years. At Universal, we aim to set the standards by which other agencies are judged. In doing this we ensure exceptional support throughout the entire experience, both to the model and client alike.

Our new website system has proved a wise investment, opening up doors to international brands. It offers a full online booking facility where clients can monitor their assignment from inception to completion.

CORRUPTION IN FASHION

by Michele Obi on August 5, 2003

Looks like modelling agencies are now under the spotlight with regards to price fixing. Its no surprise to me that the modelling industry is thought of as corrupt. To start with you can only really make it to the level of Naomi Campbell if you are with the top agencies….Elite, Ford, Select and Next model management. (Select is not under investigation but is also one of the best) Till now I thought it was because they only have the most beautiful on their books, but it turns out they are being accused of blocking new businesses.

Models allege that agents conspire to fix fees and block new businesses that attempt to break the cartel. Although the probe is at an early stage, it could result in criminal charges and prison sentences if the claims are verified.

Its a shame really. I know most people look at modelling as a shallow industry but when looked at in the professional light it really is an art and a great communication method for the designer to their audience.
