Alas! the winner of Project Runway was crowned last night. The collections that the final three designers showcased at Bryant Park were the strongest out of all of the seasons of the show thus far.
Jillian, Rami and Christian all put together amazing presentations that showed off their incredible talent and their genuine passion and dedication. It was extremely moving to see the raw emotions surrounding the last challenge (Christian being unusually nervous and insecure was absolutely priceless).

I totally thought that last night’s episode of Project Runway would be the finale and that the season would be a wrap. Of course, the producers decided to milk it, so we won’t get to see the runway shows and the crowning of the winner until next week (should have figured).
Last night, our friend, Tim Gunn, paid visits to all of the designers in their hometowns…which meant NYC for everyone but Rami, whose business is based out of LA. I felt like the visits weren’t nearly as touchy feely and personal as with past seasons. With Christian, Tim literally walked into a closet-sized room where the designer worked and slept, gave his constructive comments on the collection and then left. No tears, no hugs, no nothing…

I can’t believe how quickly this season of Project Runway has gone by. With this week’s episode, the final contestants were chosen to make their debut at Bryant Park for Fashion Week.
The challenge was to find a piece of art from the MET and to create an original garment inspired from it. It was annoying to see Rami immediately lunge towards a statue of Aphrodite because you just knew he was going to succumb to creating another draped Grecian gown.
Although his lavender dress was really pretty and wearable, seeing another draped garment had absolutely no “wow” factor and put him near the bottom.

I will admit that when I was a kid, I used to watch the WWF all the time with my older brothers (I was a big Hulk Hogan fan). I never really got into watching women’s wrestling though because cheering on huge, as in built like a super hero, ladies wearing glittery spandex pulling out each others hair was not really my cup of tea.
So when this weeks Project Runway challenge was to create a look for one of the Divas of Wrestling to wear in the ring, I was partly appalled, but also partly intrigued. After all, what could Nina Garcia and Michael Kors possibly have to say about faux patent leather spandex?

Ricky, aka Mr. Sensitive, is probably still crying over his first win this season. I couldn’t help but be happy that the underdog - who had seemed to perpetually grace the chopping block – finally stepped up to showcase his talent.
The form-fitting dress he created was an edgy, yet refined, take on denim and looked as though it was painted on his model, hitting every right curve.
Although Ricky was able to muster up some magic this week, his hit-or-miss track record makes it tough to have any confidence that he’ll make it much farther.
As for the rest of the contestants, nearly all of them received warm responses from the judges (even garnering smiles from sometime ice queen, Nina Garcia!).

This week’s show was definitely my favourite so far. Throughout this season, we’ve seen a lot of pretty dresses and immaculate pieces, but we haven’t witnessed anyone push the envelope (a la Santino Rice from a couple seasons ago). The challenge itself, creating an avant-garde look and a related, prêt-a-porter second look, called for designers to step outside their threshold of comfort and utility and put together fantastical and artistic pieces that could be translated to more commercial looks.

I couldn’t help but laugh when I heard about this week’s challenge for a couple of reasons:
A. It brought back memories from my senior prom (wearing stilettos for the first time, having overly coiffed hair and way too much make-up on) and
B. the Catholic school, St. John Vianney, where they found this week’s models, is located in the small, fairly affluent, central Jersey town that I grew up in (luckily, I went to public school).
As the girls asked for plunging necklines, short hemlines and below-the-waist backs, I grimaced and thought that Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton had successfully made their mark on young, impressionable, teenage girls everywhere.

After 2 long weeks of Project Runway repeats –marathon style – we finally got a new ep to give us somethin’ “sweet” to talk about in the new year! Instead of going to Mood for supplies, the contestants were ushered to the Time Square Hershey’s store where they grabbed Twizzlers, Hershey bars, Peanut Butter Cups and anything else they could get their hands on as materials for the next challenge. As I was watching, I couldn’t help but think that if I were a contestant, I would’ve probably gotten sidetracked and strategically stocked up for my pre-emptive chocolate binge instead of potential materials for a dress.

This week’s show was all about the unexpected. The challenge itself was interesting! Each designer had to revamp old garments for everyday women who’d lost a lot of weight. A great task, considering it’s easier to make clothes look good on a walking mannequin….but when you have an average woman with curves on your hands, a more thoughtful approach is required.
In what was a shocking twist to yesterday’s episode, Jack removed himself from the competition due to health issues and ex contestant Chris March (who was kicked off last week) was given a second chance. An ill-judged decision in my opinion and after seeing Chris’s ridiculous ensemble – think Superman meets Olive Oyl – it was also an undeserving one!

Last night’s episode of Project Runway was my favourite so far this season. It was cool to see what the designers could do with trends that we like to pretend never happened - like neon, dancewear, shoulder pads, overalls, poodle skirts, etc. As the designers grouped into teams of 3, I put my money on Kitt, Christian and Jack, who had to combine zoot suit (which I had never heard of, but I think is like those MC Hammer get-ups), fringe and pleather into a cohesive collection.
It was a bit shocking to see some of the personalities rear their ugly heads. I thought Ricky would break down into a sobbing mess when Victorya – who wins the closet tyrant award - nastily chewed him out over his design and leadership skills. As much as I like his personality, Ricky needs to step it up next week and send out a garment that impresses the judges, otherwise he’ll be the next to go.
