Despite only being at the London premiere of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel last night to support her husband Ol Parker, who wrote the screenplay of the film, it’s safe to say that Thandie Newton pretty much stole the show on the red carpet. 

Thanks to Beyonce and Jay-Z’s little baby girl Blue Ivy Carter, the colour’s popularity has undoubtedly sky-rocketed. But, whatever the gorgeous Thandie Newton’s reason for opting to wear this electric blue one-shouldered Stella McCartney Resort 2012 dress was, it was definitely a great choice.

Thandie has excelled at the ‘understated elegance’ look for as long as we can remember, often managing to outshine celebs in the brightest and most extravagant of frocks with the simplest of looks, but she’s proved that she can also rock the red carpet in a bold, daring number too. She’s certainly no wallflower, that’s for sure.

Ms Newton teamed her attention-grabbing dress with some nude pumps, a chic up-do and cute earrings, letting the dress – and of course, her beauty – do all the talking. What a pro!

Rooney Mara attended the 27th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival at the weekend, wearing an attention-grabbing structured green dress from the Louis Vuitton pre-fall 2012 collection. And we couldn’t be happier to see the Oscar-nominated actress step out of her red carpet comfort zone!

What we love the most about this look is how well the colour complements her porcelain skin and offsets her jet black hair. Green isn’t the easiest of colours to pull off, but judging by the shade, the dress could have easily been made just for Rooney. As cute as they are though, we don’t think the Giambattista Valli black strappy sandals were the best choice, but we’ll let it slide.

At the end of the day, we applaud – well, practically bow down to – Rooney Mara for this full-on colour explosion… akin to her transformation for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, her Louis Vuitton look only confirms that this lady definitely doesn’t do things by halves.

Without sounding too enthusiastic, we think this is quite possibly the best Keira Knightley red carpet look in existence. Ever. 

Keira Knightley, one of our all-time favourite English roses, attended the London premiere of her latest film A Dangerous Method in a jaw-dropping deep red gown made especially for her by the fashion gods at Burberry.

Although she was there to promote her film, we don’t think anyone around the red carpet area would have been able to focus on anything other than her radiance. Keira accessorised her custom-made Burberry Prorsum gown with a black bow belt (although we’re not sure if it is actually part of the dress…  it works so well with it, hence the uncertainty), a quilted black clutch, bold eye make-up and a retro up-do.

Although the gown is floor-sweeping and is draped loosely on Keira’s small frame, the peep-hole detailing and a very daring, plunging back gives it just the right amount of sex factor. This is the stuff sophisticated awards season looks are made of!

While nude was the unofficial colour of the Globes, we think black was definitely a contender for the title at the 18^th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles last night, as Angelina Jolie, Amber Heard, Emma Stone and Stacy Keibler were amongst the stars who rocked the colour on the red carpet.

Hollywood royalty Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie looked cosier than ever on the red carpet, and even though goddess Angelina reverted to her floor-length black gown ways, she was still one of the best-dressed, stand-out celebs for us in her pleated Jenny Packham dress, seemingly quashing those rumours that she is pregnant!

Lea Michele once again went for a pale grey number (well, if it ain’t broke… ) and although we loved everything about her thigh-split Versace dress, we hope that she will opt for more colour on her next red carpet outing.

We think Kaley Cuoco’s Romona Keveza dress is the Sarah Michelle Gellar Monique Lhuillier dress of the SAGAs, in the way that it is a difficult to wear, attention-grabbing dress which we personally love, but understand not everyone will feel the same way.

Emily Blunt, Sofia Vergara and Michelle Williams were three actresses who provided some much-needed bold colour to the awards, courtesy of their respective green Oscar de la Renta, pink Marchesa and red Valentino dresses.

As always, narrowing down our favourites for a ‘Top Ten’ best dressed list is difficult, but we have tried our best, so here goes:

Last night, as we were flicking through our brand new, shiny copy of Elle Collections while the National Television Awards were casually minding their own business in the background, there was a moment we had to put everything on hold and edge closer to the TV for a closer inspection.

That moment, was when X Factor judge and N-Dubz singer Tulisa Contostavlos came on stage to present an award in a shocking pink feathered Suzie Turner tutu dress that we felt was a slight nod to Carrie Bradshaw, our favourite Sex and the City New York columnist.

Carrie’s iconic tutu dress was a little more understated to say the least, but do you guys think Tulisa emulated Miss Bradshaw well or do you think the outlandish outfit made her look more like a bridesmaid from My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding?

Even the TOWIE lot toned it down for the night and arrived in relatively muted floor-length dresses in nude (THE colour of the current awards season) so it’s safe to say Tulisa wanted to stand out from the crowd – a goal which she achieved with ease.

Nude really is turning out to be the unofficial colour of the season! The colour (or lack thereof) was very prominent at this month’s awards ceremonies, and it looks like the celebs and their stylists still can’t get enough of it. 

If there was any hope of nude disappearing to make room for some splashes of colour, that hope may have just been dashed thanks to Kate Beckinsale’s appearance at the Underworld Awakening premiere in LA. If it’s possible to look this gorgeous in nude, why would the celebs of Tinsel Town try anything else?

Akin to another British Kate, i.e. one of Jenny Packham’s royal fans, Ms Beckinsale looked every inch the princess in one of the designer’s dresses from the spring/summer 2012 collection.

We love every part of this look, from the natural make-up and glossy, flowing, wavy locks to the matching chunky gold bracelets – this is what flawlessness looks like!

Next to the Oscars, the Golden Globes are our favourite of the awards ceremonies, which is why we never fail to stay awake for the red carpet arrivals. We don’t want this to sound like an acceptance speech, but we want to thank everyone who kept us company on Twitter and shared their opinions with us in the middle of the night – we love your dedication to fashion! 

This year, we waited with baited breath for Michelle Williams, Rooney Mara and Emma Stone to turn up, and although they all looked beautiful, (put it this way, we wouldn’t put them on a worst dressed list) they didn’t make it on our ‘Top 10’ – simply because we expected something a little more wow-worthy. If Emma Stone had turned up in her green Jason Wu dress from the Critics Choice Awards, she’d be a firm frontrunner for best dressed!

Hollywood royalty Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie on the other hand stole the show, as did Sarah Michelle Gellar, Zooey Deschanel, Claire Danes and Charlize Theron, who all greatly satisfied our fashion taste buds. (You can find them all in our ‘Top 10′ below!)

We think we were most surprised by Ringer (and Buffy, natch) star Sarah Michelle Gellar, as we don’t always get to see her at these events, although we wish she’d show her face more. With a teeny-tiny frame like Sarah’s, it would be easy for her to get lost in the Monique Lhuillier dress her two-year-old reportedly helped her pick (aww!), but she owned it and made it onto our ‘Top 10′ list with ease.
