Project Runway Season 4: Finale, Part 1

I totally thought that last night’s episode of Project Runway would be the finale and that the season would be a wrap. Of course, the producers decided to milk it, so we won’t get to see the runway shows and the crowning of the winner until next week (should have figured).

Last night, our friend, Tim Gunn, paid visits to all of the designers in their hometowns…which meant NYC for everyone but Rami, whose business is based out of LA. I felt like the visits weren’t nearly as touchy feely and personal as with past seasons. With Christian, Tim literally walked into a closet-sized room where the designer worked and slept, gave his constructive comments on the collection and then left. No tears, no hugs, no nothing…

LFW AW08 Favourite Shows: Aganovich & Deryck Walker

The most common question asked while waiting for shows to start has got to be, “So…which has been your favourite show so far?” Now that all the chaos is over and I’ve had a chance to reflect on the week that was London Fashion Week, I must admit I have two favourites – Aganovich and Deryck Walker (although it could well have been three as word is that Avsh Lom Gur’s collection was amazing!). Others that came close - Peter Jensen, Jaeger London, Felder Felder and Armand Basi.

Project Runway Season 4: Episode 11

I can’t believe how quickly this season of Project Runway has gone by. With this week’s episode, the final contestants were chosen to make their debut at Bryant Park for Fashion Week.

The challenge was to find a piece of art from the MET and to create an original garment inspired from it. It was annoying to see Rami immediately lunge towards a statue of Aphrodite because you just knew he was going to succumb to creating another draped Grecian gown.

Although his lavender dress was really pretty and wearable, seeing another draped garment had absolutely no “wow” factor and put him near the bottom.

NY Fashion Week AW08: Gen Art presents Camilla Staerk

My last stop before calling it a wrap at Fashion Week was the Gen Art show featuring Camilla Staerk. For the first time, Gen Art showcased the work of only one designer instead of their typical three, displaying their resolute confidence in the new talent.

The collection was titled ‘Bride of the Black Moon’ and appropriately many pieces were done completely in black leather and lace. The models wore heavy eyeliner, bowler hats and what looked like men’s patent-leather oxford shoes, creating an austere and masculine air to the presentation.

willow_aw08.jpgThe Willow by Kit Willow presentation was one of the last shows to be held in Bryant Park for Fashion Week AW08 (and my last show in the tents) so I did my best to take it all in. It’s been an exciting week!

The Sydney-based designer created a beautiful collection of elegantly tailored separates and dresses for the young and modern woman. Fitted jackets, girly dresses and wide-leg pants defined her collection, but it was the absolutely hot thigh-high lace up boots featured with almost every look that had me hooked.

Montreal-based stylist turned designer, Rad Hourani showcased his AW08 presentation at Bumble and Bumble on Friday. A completely untrained designer with no formal schooling, Rad’s first collection which showed in Paris last year, helped to quickly win him acclaim among his peers, and his style has already been compared to other famed designers like Helmut Lang.

Already a rising star in Canada, Arthur Mendonca presented his AW 08 collection yesterday in hopes of making a stronger name for himself in the States as well. Although his chosen venue was a trek from Bryant Park (which probably deterred many a high-heel clad woman from attending), I was lucky enough to find an empty cab to make it to the show (and spotted songstress Nelly Furtado in the front row).

NY Fashion Week AW08: Naeem Khan

Naeem Khan showcased an absolutely stunning 26 piece collection this morning. Everyone in the tent, including front rower, Eva Longoria Parker, was “ooh-ing and “ah-ing” and pointing at the gorgeous pieces they wanted to steal off the runway. I even caught a hint of a smile and twinkle in the eye from Elle director, Nina Garcia.
