Everyone’s doing it this season. From high street store, Uniqlo, to high-end label, Mulberry. The simple t-shirt in once again fashionable, except this time it isn’t about sporting the names of rock bands across your chest. Instead, it’s about cool, funky designs and patterns that only a true artist could conjure.

Fashion has had a long and turbulant relationship with politics. From Katharine Hamnett’s pioneering t-shirts to Vivienne Westwood’s manifesto, style can be shorthand for personal politics - without all the speeches. Fitting, then, that amidst the excitement of the Presidential Primaries, two designers have stepped in to show their support in the most ancient of all mediums - the printed t-shirt.
As far as staple items go, the quirky t-shirt is always overlooked and overshadowed by simple basics. But we say it is a staple item and shares the same qualities as a best friend, dependable and always knows just what to say to cheer you up. There are SO many quirky and kooky t-shirts around that you’ll never be short of choices. We’ve narrowed down our favourites to 3 of the most interesting and fun.

There’s something quite addictive about purchasing an item which also contributes to some form of global good. Optimistically speaking perhaps that would explain the phenomenon of the “I’m not a plastic bag” (like I said perhaps). Either way I do like the marriage of fashion and consciousness which is why my full support goes to abolishing seal hunting and spreading the word with this cute hoodie, $50 and t-shirt, $22.50 (pictured above).

Making a ‘fashion statement’ has reached new and inspiring heights. I’m not talking about Britney Spears exhibiting her inner feelings and darkest secrets across her chest and on her trucker caps, I’m referring to the new fashion craze where style has taken on a political and charitable front. In the past celebrities such as Sienna Miller and Sharon Osborne have produced personalised t-shirt designs for Dorothy Perkins in support of Breast cancer care, more recently endorsements from the likes of Angelina Jolie and Stella McCartney have heightened eco-awareness and the development of fair-trade organic clothing has boosted public consciousness.
And now high street and online clothing stores like Topshop and ASOS have jumped on the bandwagon with collections of tees with not so subtle political undertones. Vibrant colours and bold prints help to convey statements such as ‘Choose a Smile Not a Missile’, ‘Drop Beats Not Bombs’, £20 and ‘Make Love Not War’. They’re available in as many different colours as there are issues in the world!

Don’t you just hate it when some clever twat decides to spoil the end of a movie with a quick one liner such as “Neo is the One” or “Verbal is Keyser Soze”? Well then you may or may not be too impressed with 20yr old Oliver Moss who’s created the Spoilt t-shirt, $10, filled with spoilers from some of the most loved films.
I’m totally impressed with the originality of the idea and its even more fun trying to decipher which movies are being referenced. The t-shirt’s been a big hit with the guys with all sizes currently out of stock, but there are still some girly tees left!
