Kate designs for Topshop

H&M and Target have made it their mission to team up with as many top designers of the moment and bring to us cheap yet chic fashion, but Topshop has gone one better and if the rumours are correct will be hiring Kate Moss for £1 million to design her very own range.

Due to hit the shops early next year, it’s a sure bet the line will be a success. H&M must be kicking themselves for not backing Kate during her cocaine shame, otherwise who knows, it could have been them. [Mirror.co.uk]

Topshop on your mobile

Every company around is searching for a way to incorporate mobile phones into their business and Topshop is no exception. The store has managed to find a way to further their influence in the youth market by launching a mobile phone style advice service.

In conjunction with Skywire, the service will be an extension of their in-store style advice service and will allow customers to use their mobile phones to interact with Topshop’s style advisors. Shoppers will be able to book appointments, receive advice, receive picture messages of recommended clothing and reserve items.

Managing director of Skywire, Alex Judd, Skywire said of the venture,

“This is a fantastic use of mobile to enhance the unique service that Topshop offers.

With the ability to actually see the clothes that the style advisers are recommending while out of the store, it is a great use of technology.”

:: London Scotland Yard has confirmed that British Police will be investigating newspaper reports that Kate Moss has taken cocaine. However they will require more evidence than just newspaper photos.

:: Anna Wintour will have more than just Heather Mills to deal with, after Vogue Editor Andre Leon Talley declared to an open mouthed Oprah that “Miss Anna, dont like fat people“. The National Association to Advance Fat acceptance will be meeting to discuss what type of action should be taken against Conde Nast.

:: The Topshop Unique label is already available in New York and now a Topshop flagship store could be coming to a city near you. Owner of the store Philip Green is searching for sites in New York and possibly Paris as part of a brand building strategy.

:: Sean “Diddy” Combs has officially apologised to model Tyson Beckford after the model hit him with a lawsuit in August 05 for using his image after his contract had expired. Diddy declared his respect for Tyson and ensured he would straighten everything out.

No stopping Topshop

Topshop adored by many, will be on the catwalk at London Fashion week this September. The high street store will be showing its top of the range line “Unique”. According to it’s Brand director Jane Shepherdson, this move was made in order to silence their critics who claim Topshop is only good for ripping of the catwalks quickly. Unique will also be stocked in New York boutique Opening Ceremony who have dedicated a complete floor to the label. The boutique celebrated the arrival of Unique in style with a shopping soiree attended by Editors of Teen Vogue and W magazine and various other fashionistas. Topshop has come a long way and its path has been a successful one. Recognising “new talent” as the best method of turning the brand around, they have managed to help emerging designers as well as redefine Topshop.

“Topshop is becoming a bigger and bigger name internationally. Americans in the fashion world and beyond tell me that when someone travels to London, they are always asked, ‘Can you bring something back from Topshop?’ The thing about Topshop is that it is very spontaneous. They see something happening, they respond to it. The fashion system has changed dramatically in the past five years and Topshop has been at the forefront of that. Nobody can pretend, and nobody even aspires to dress entirely in designer clothes any more. The way people shop is to mix and match all kinds of prices and styles, and that is very much prevalent in London.” - Sarah Mower, contributing editor, American Vogue and style.com

Graduate Fashion Week, Strong Striking, but does it need a wow factor?

Battersea Park became a haven of budding new talent on the verge of venturing forth into the ‘Real Fashion World’. Four days of graduate shows, showcasing the labour of four years of hard work. With 19 colleges showing some 25 collections each, there was a lot to see, and unfortunately a lot to be missed.

All in all the week was a success; I am sure to the joy of this year’s new sponsors River Island. Having taken the title from Topshop many in the tent hinted towards the fact that it was better to have River Island because not only did they put up actual money but were more involved in the whole process. River Island does not hold a ‘designer’ section like Topshop does, however many suggested this was not really what customers care about anymore.

The main concern of Graduate Fashion Week and for the graduates themselves is where does it take them? Where can they go? Although GFW received a nice press turnout it was still relatively thin on the ground, not to mention the sheer cost colleges have to outlay for these shows. Do students really go on, or do they get stuck in limbo? According to various colleges including Northumbria and London College of Fashion some 80% do make it into employment so there is hope.

Why haven’t we heard of the next Galliano, McQueen or McCartney? Well mainly because designers go in as execs in already established houses such as Calvin Klein Louis Vuitton etc.

Was there a next “someone” in this GFW? Well no not really, there was however a definite leaning towards commercial appeal, which will undoubtedly benefit with placements, but we are back to the age old dilemma - can fashion be fashion if it’s commercial, or is real fashion about grand ideas? There was definitely no lack of superior cuts and imagination. Innovative ideas in knitwear and menswear were present throughout. Sadly however there was a distinct lack of Avant Garde, which can be seen to show lack of imagination.

The beauty of Topshop

I was going to prepare an article about the beauty of Topshop, but this piece of writing says it all for me. It doesn’t however spell out some of the cons of the ever popular shop. So I will…

1. You are guaranteed that at a party, barbeque or drink up every girl will be wearing “Topshop” and there is an 80% chance someone will be wearing the same jeans as you too.

2. You can no longer lie when a stranger or a friend asks “where you bought those great earrings from?”…chances are you will be caught out (I have been!!!)

3. Topshop now have the best shoes, so not only will all females have the same clothes but the same footwear too!!

4. In a club ur’e boyfriend might try and surprise you from behind and to your dismay grope the girl with the same outfit as you!!

In order to avoid any of this occuring to you try to mix and match ur Topshop with some of the following:

Zara

Miss Selfridge

H&M

Mango
