One of a Kind: Old Meets New!

by Danielle Eccleston on June 19, 2008

vintagefendi_180608.jpgAfter surveying several new boutiques, it appears that the vintage/contemporary divide is now a love affair. Store owners, like those of Vancouver’s Mintage (www.mintagevintage.com), have realized that the best way to ride out the recession is to benefit from consumers’ innate love of fashion from the past and the present. The layout of Mintage divides old and new right down the middle, showcasing the fashion progression from the last 75 years and encouraging consumers to mix and match eras to create unique styles.

Vintage Shopping With Fashion Critic Holly Brubach

by Michele Obi on June 3, 2008

Vintage shopping can be a pleasurable experience, especially when you stumble upon that special one of a kind piece. However, before spending your hard earned money on that all important investment its advisable to arm yourself with knowledge. For valuable advice, it doesn’t get better than vintage expert, and Creative Consultant for YOOX, Holly Brubach. Holly has served as Style Editor at The New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker and was also Director of the Prada Sport and Home. She is currently a contributing editor for Vanity Fair and acted as a curator to select each piece in the Yoox.com Dior Vintage Sale which goes live on June 4th. Here, Holly shares her tips on shopping for vintage…

1. When wearing vintage today, the first rule of thumb is: not head-to-toe.  It’s important to mix vintage with contemporary, to integrate the old with the new in a way that doesn’t call too much attention to the vintage item(s), just as an antique chair can become part of a modern room.  Concentrate on the whole effect and not on a single piece.  Many people treat vintage too formally, maybe because it’s “precious.”  But one great way to make it seem completely timely is to pair it with jeans.

Can you keep a secret?

by Angie Omata on December 13, 2007

vintage_secret.jpg…Neither can we. With all our favourite celebs hitting the red carpet and streets in vintage duds, we can’t help but wonder where they’re digging up all of these fabulous finds. Now we have a way of finding our own diamonds in the rough, minus the headache of sifting through the clothing racks, with the help of a brilliant new site, Vintage Secret.

Vintage Secret was founded by two fashionistas based out of London who scour exotic locales from Paris to Japan to find ‘new vintage’ garments that are rare, still in great condition and in sync with current trends.

We have a new addiction, trawling through Topshop’s archives of vintage treasures. There are gems from Givenchy, Dior, Lanvin and more. The collections are limited to say the least and items are selling out quicker than you can click “buy now” but there are still some great pieces that have yet to be snapped up. Here are our picks.

1. Biba sequinned Waistcoat, £220

Granny Chic

by Michele Obi on July 2, 2007

To commemorate being in the game for 45 years, the extremely polished Valentino spoke to The Times and once again expressed his distaste at any form of scruffiness especially by some English girls,

“putting together dresses from pieces that come from Portobello and who knows where else. Young girls, they think it’s fashionable, but if those dresses are worn by a lady of 50 or so, then, sorry, she looks like a grandmother.”

While I’m inclined to agree with him on some level – they may not be English but I too don’t understand the Olsen’s consistent need to look like a pair of old Grannies - I have to disagree with his disregard for pieces that one’s Grandma could wear. Take this Sheer Iris Dress, $49 from The Urban Collection for example. I have a very similar Vintage dress which I wore to an event a couple of months ago and I have to say I received ALOT of compliments all night. So I say Valentino is wrong sometimes it is fashionable to wear something which can also be “worn by a lady of 50 or so”, if worn correctly that is….
