Balmain x H&M: Top Partywear Picks

Last Updated on 9th December 2015 Balmain x H&M will finally be unleashed tomorrow and we think it’s safe to say, it’s the most anticipated collaboration to date. The collection (which has been criticised by some for being a tad pricey), is everything we expected it to be – highly glam and packed with tons of sexy sequinned pieces. Available both online and in-store, it’s imperative that you know exactly what you want. Demand is high, and there won’t be much time to snap up your must-haves. Thankfully the collection lands just in time for the festive season and includes a number of sparkly, statement “wow” pieces. We’re pretty much coveting everything featured in the campaign picture above and then some. Suffice, to say it was tough to narrow down our top picks to just 10, which is why we’ve gone slightly over with our 11 must-buys and to be honest we nearly had 12. But, after much deliberation we decided not to include the pink sequinned gown as worn by Jourdan Dunn in the pic above. So, here goes, here’s our top Balmain x H&M partywear picks! 1. Velvet Tuxedo £119.99, 2. Sequin Embroidered dress £119.99, 3. Beaded velvet dress £349.99, 4. Multistrand cuff £49.99, 5. Draped silk skirt £59.99, 6. Embossed ring £12.99, 7. Beaded leather clutch £99.99, 8. Jacquard-weave silk dress £119.99, 9. Top with braided embroidery £79.99,  10. Sparkly earrings £24.99. 11. Suede bracelet £39.99  Click here to view the full collection.

Balmain to open it’s first London flagship store. #Balmainarmy

Last Updated on 5th November 2014 Balmain fans rejoice. The luxury fashion house is opening it’s first ever London flagship store! Located on South Audley Street, Mayfair, the boutique spans 125-square-meters and is set be classically English. The furniture however, will be inspired by Pierre Balmain’s favourite mid-ccentury French furniture designers André Arbus and Jean Royère. “Obviously,” explains designer of the store architect, Joseph Dirand, “if Pierre Balmain had moved to London, he would have brought the furniture he loved along with him.” It’s been a great year for London fashionistas, with both Victoria Beckham and Balmain setting up home in the heart of London. “Balmain has a particularly strong and loyal clientele in the English capital and we’re very happy to be able to offer them this first London flagship. Just as in our Paris flagship, Joseph Dirand has created the perfect classically elegant backdrop for the modern designs of the house’s Creative Director, Olivier Roustein,” said Emmanuel Diemoz, the company’s CEO. The new flagship store coincides with the relaunch of the brand’s web site Balmain.com.

Paris Fashion Week SS15 highlights from Balmain, Lanvin, Roland Mouret and more!

Last Updated on 26th September 2014 It’s all been hotting up in Paris these past 24 hours, with brand spanking new spring/summer 2015 collections from the likes of Lanvin, Roland Mouret, Nina Ricci and Balmain being the reasons why. Alber Elbaz celebrated Lanvin’s 125th anniversary with an outstanding collection that paid homage to the French fashion House’s history but stayed in tune with the modern woman at the same time too. If anyone can do it, Alber Elbaz can! The Balmain show might just be one of the most star-studded ones we’ve seen so far thanks to its mixture of A-list FROWers and catwalk models. Karlie Kloss, Jourdan Dunn, Rosie Huntington Whiteley, Joan Smalls and Kendall Jenner were just a few of the famous model faces strutting their stuff in Olivier Rousteing’s designs, while the likes of Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner and Kanye West all sat pretty on the front row to take in the new season pieces with an unrestricted view. And speaking of those new season pieces – it was all about the laser cut, check print, summer brights, and skin. Lots of skin was on show thanks to the bralets, sexy short-hemmed dresses, cut-out detailing and low necklines. Roland Mouret’s latest outing was just as sharp and en-vogue as ever; the perfect wardrobe for the professional woman on a tropical getaway. Asymmetric silhouettes, bright colourways, sharp collars – everything we love about Roland Mouret with a chic but relaxed twist. The young celebs will be all over this collection for their red carpet premiere outings, you mark our words. Here are the rest of our Paris Fashion Week highlights: Balmain Roland Mouret Lanvin Nina Ricci

Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing actually loves his work being copied…

Last Updated on 29th July 2014 Tom Ford and Roberto Cavalli are just two of the many designers who have spoken out about their hatred towards ‘copycats’… but Olivier Rousteing’s opinion couldn’t be more different. The Balmain creative director has said that he actually likes seeing his new season designs copied on the high street, and thinks Zara’s pieces in particular are better than his own work. No, really… “I love seeing a Zara window with my clothes mixed with Céline and Proenza Schouler! I think that’s genius,” he said. “It’s even better than what I do! I love the styling, I love the story… I watch the windows always, and it’s genius what they do today. “I’m really happy that Balmain is copied – when I did my Miami collection and we did the black and white checks, I knew they would be in Zara and H&M. But they did it in a clever way – they mixed a Céline shape with my Balmain print! Well done! I love that”. We are partial to an occasional shopping spree in Zara, so we’re glad that one of our favourite designers actually approves of the pieces. After all, there’s nothing better than getting designer inspired pieces for a fraction of the price! Where do you stand? [Independent]

The six models who replaced Rihanna in the new Balmain ad campaign…

Last Updated on 4th July 2014 It was a wise choice choosing Bajan superstar Rihanna to be the face of the Balmain spring/summer 2014 ad campaign images, but we bet creative-director Olivier Rousteing didn’t think about how hard it was going to be to find someone to replace her for the new season. We don’t know how long he and the Balmain team spent racking their brains for a suitable replacement, but we think they will definitely be pleased with the end results, as they have picked six of the best, most dynamic modelling faces of the moment – Cara Delevingne, Jourdan Dunn, Ysaunny Brito, Issa Lish, Kayla Scot and  Binx Walton. “I could not be more happy with this campaign,” said Olivier Rousteing. “It illustrates my vision of the house. These six different women, from such an incredible mix of backgrounds, are all united to present what a modern French house can be.” The modelswere photographed by the legendary Mario Sorrenti under the art direction of Katie Grand, and really do emulate modern-day Parisian fashion at its finest. Well played, Balmain!

Kim Kardashian parties the night away in Balmain

Last Updated on 23rd May 2014 There’s no doubt about it, France is the place to be this week. While some of the world’s biggest A-listers attended the Cannes Film Festival and, more specifically, the amfAR Cinema Against Aids Gala, Kim Kardashian had something else on her mind last night. The future Mrs Kanye West and some of her closest gal pals were spotted out in Paris last night, partying and making the most of Kim’s last few days as a single lady. And a fabulous night out with the girls wouldn’t be complete without a show-stopping outfit, and that’s exactly what Kim gave us! She stepped out in a glittering Balmain dress, which hugged each and every one of those world-famous curves beautifully and ensured that everyone knew she was the main attraction. Is Kim’s Balmain dress a not-so-subtle hint that she’ll be wearing an Olivier Rousteing original on her big day? Only time will tell – not long ‘til we find out! [Image]

Ellie Goulding vs. Blake Lively…Who wore Balmain better?

The nifty LBD never fails to impress with its versatile ways:  elevating a simple look to award-worthy heights, and being one of the easiest wardrobe staples to take from day to night; you won’t be stuck for options.  And, impressing the hell out of us this week in their respective LBDs are Ellie Goulding and Blake Lively, who both wore the same Balmain number nearly five years apart! Cast your mind back to September 2009, when Blake Lively gave this sequined number its first outing at the HBO post-Emmy Awards party. Playing up its glistening embellishment and exaggerated shoulders to full effect, Blake paired the dress with Jimmy Choo sandals and emerald hued earrings. Slicked back hair, neutral make-up and a healthy glow topped off her look with perfection. Giving the dress its second outing was Ellie Goulding, who struck a red carpet pose at the L.A. premiere of Divergent, back in March. Opting for open hair and natural make-up, the singer showed off the dress’s plunging neckline with aplomb. Matching Christian Louboutin pumps completed Ellie’s relaxed-glam look. So, who scores the hottest LBD wearer award? Both ladies brought their A-game and looked super-hot in their respective looks, but Blake steals the show for us. The dress’s strong silhouette demands a fuss-free approach to styling and Ellie’s long locks unnecessarily conceal the statement shoulder detail. We’re Team Slicked Back, all the way! Whose look wins for you? [Images: Ellie; Blake]

Emma Watson covers Elle US April in Balmain jumpsuit

Last Updated on 14th March 2014 There’s a couple of things we instantly learnt when we saw Emma Watson on the cover of the Elle US April issue. One – denim is back and fiercer than ever. And two – so is Emma Watson! The former Harry Potter star is a long way from Hogwarts on the cover and in her accompanying editorial pictures, shot so expertly by Carter Smith and styled by Joe Zee. We’ve seen Emma grow up before our eyes as wizard-in-training Hermione Granger – a character she will probably be associated with for the rest of her life – and that is something Emma is actually trying to break away from… “There are all these actresses who have emerged in the last year or two, and they get to emerge as this complete human being,” she said. And I’m so jealous! “I remember reading this thing that Elizabeth Taylor wrote. She had her first kiss in character. On a movie set. It really struck me,” she continued. “I don’t know how or why, but I had this sense that if I wasn’t really careful, that could be me. That my first kiss could be in somebody else’s clothes. And my experiences could all belong to someone else.” You can read the rest of Emma’s interview when the mag finally hits newsstands on March 25th. The snippet above will just have to keep you going until then!

Paris Fashion Week AW14 highlights from Lanvin, Balmain, Balenciaga & more

Last Updated on 28th February 2014 The celebs were out in force for the third day of Paris Fashion Week – and we don’t just mean on the front rows! Some of the most in-demand supermodels walked the runway for some of the biggest fashion designers in the world. Here are our highlights from the latest goings on at Paris Fashion Week: LANVIN AW14 Rihanna joined Emma Roberts and other such famous faces to witness the Lanvin autumn/winter 2014 collection first-hand; we’re not jealous at all, honest! Alber Elbaz presented a versatile yet somewhat experimental collection this time around – we believe his exact words were Experimental, Extravagant and Extreme – ensuring that fur and ruffles played a huge part in his light and fluffy new season range. Asymmetric silhouettes and Chanel inspired tweed also made an appearance. The silk dresses were a refreshingly new yet reassuringly familiar addition to the collection, adding the signature Lanvin elegance to the proceedings. Red carpet faves, for sure! NINA RICCI AW14 Jessica Alba watched the Nina Ricci autumn/winter 2014 collection from her comfy seat in the front row, which has got us pretty excited as we imagine what new-season pieces she will be wearing over the next few months as she goes about her daily business or rocks up on a red carpet. Sparkling, shimmering eveningwear was the highlight of the collection, with the designer not being shy of an embellishment or two. Or six. Wool skirt suits, chic jackets, cosy cashmere jumpers, and much more! BALMAIN AW14 Although there were a lot of big faces on the Balmain front row – did we mention Rihanna was one of the schlebs sitting pretty on the FROW? – some of the world’s biggest and hottest models of the moment walked the show too. Rihanna shows her support for Balmain at Paris Fashion Week

Last Updated on 28th February 2014 Rihanna is officially in the city of love for Paris Fashion Week, and the new face of Balmain made sure she supported Olivier Rousteing by attending the autumn/winter 2014 show in a fierce pre-fall 2014 ensemble. She chose a typically Ri Ri look that came in an army inspired shade of khaki, and made sure she flashed some of her perfect pins at the same time too. This look oozed sexy sophistication in a way that only Rihanna knows how! And it looks like she has been taking hair styling tips from her good pal Katy Perry. KP rocked the Cleopatra hairdo at the BRIT Awards last week, and now Rihanna has taken it upon herself to try out the daring air trend too. We definitely think she pulled it off – we’ll have a tough time telling you who we think rocked it better though. Let’s call it a tie and leave it at that! [Image]

Kelly Rowland vs. Kate Bosworth…Who wore Balmain better?

Last Updated on 7th January 2014 Two ladies. One blingin’ dress. You know the drill. This week’s fash-off comes courtesy of leggy lovely, Kelly Rowland and Hollywood darling Kate Bosworth. Both ladies were spotted in the same Balmain Fall 2013 dress, albeit with very different style results. Although a top, thanks to the oversize fit, Kate was the first one to turn this embellished showstopper into a dress, at the 2013 Met Gala. Unlike the runway look, Kate went with bare legs, a gold belt to cinch the waist and simple black pumps. A small black clutch and strong eyeliner completed the look nicely. But catching up with Kate in the style stakes was X Factor judge Kelly Rowland, who styled the same dress differently for an appearance on season three of the American show, last year. Pairing the top-cum-dress with nothing other than white Tom Ford pumps and her voluminous locks, Kelly rocked a killer pose, as she posted the outfit on Instagram. But, seeing as it’s a fash-off, there can only be one winner, so we’re going to slip the first style crown of 2014 onto Kate’s head! There isn’t much that Kelly can’t 100 per cent rock, but we love Kate’s accessories, and feel the belt does wonders to frame her petite shape. Definitely a striking, and memorable look from 2013! Whose look wins for you? [Images: Kelly; Kate]

Georgia May Jagger looks relaxed in Balmain for British Vogue’s February issue

Last Updated on 6th January 2014 Want to know how to do relaxed chic in the most effortless and stylish way possible? Look no further than Georgia May Jagger on the British Vogue February cover for inspiration, as we think she’s nailed it! Then again, posing for Patrick Demarchelier’s super-flattering camera lens in a Balmain denim onesie from the spring/summer 2014 collection is always going to give you a head start, but we definitely don’t think her model/rock and roll genes and modelling background hurt either. It looks like we have lots to look forward to in the issue judging by all the eye-catching headlines on the front cover – not long to wait either as the British Vogue February issue hits newsstands on January 9th. We’ll be getting our copy; will you?

Rosie Huntington Whiteley wows in plunging Balmain mini

Last Updated on 19th December 2013 Although Rihanna was announced as the brand new face of Balmain a matter of days ago (click here to check out the spring/summer 2014 ad campaign images in case you’ve been living under a rock all week and haven’t seen them yet!), we can’t help but think Rosie Huntington Whiteley would make a good spokesperson for the French brand too, especially if the pic above is anything to go by. The stunning British model wore a sexy, plunging black and white long sleeved mini dress from the spring/summer 2012 collection (seems like ages ago we saw that collection debut on the runway, doesn’t it?) while attending The AEM Association Children of the World for Rwanda in Paris earlier this week. Although we weren’t in attendance, we would bet good money that she turned heads wherever she went! She teamed her dress with some edgy black boots and a freshly blow-dried voluminous hairdo, not to mention some feline-esque eyes that Alexa Chung would no doubt be very proud (or maybe even jealous) of. Sex goddess, much? [Image]

First look: Rihanna for Balmain

Last Updated on 17th December 2013 Well, this is an unexpectedly wonderful surprise… Rihanna is the brand new face of Balmain! The Bajan songstress was shot for the spring/summer 2014 ad campaign by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin in New York, with creative direction from Atelier Franck Durand and styling by Ri Ri’s personal stylist Mel Ottenberg. Doesn’t she look incredible in the two images above? The collection looks like it was made for her, which might not be the hardest thing to believe… “In front of the camera, she makes you feel like she is the only girl in the world,” said creative director Oliver Rousteing. “When the woman that inspires you wears your creations, your vision feels complete.” Aw, we never had the creative director of Balmain down as a huge Rihanna fan, but then again, who isn’t in love with Rihanna on and off the stage? We can expect to see the ad campaign images drop in the January issues of our favourite fashion glossies, so keep your eyes peeled! [WWD]

Balmain embellished T-shirt: Yay or Nay?

Last Updated on 19th October 2013 After the priced-induced furore J.Crew caused with its overpriced and over- embellished t-shirt for autumn/winter 2013, earlier this year, sceptics started to fish out basics with unjustified prices to slate like they were going out of fashion (pardon the pun). So when we landed on this week’s Yay or Nay option, we couldn’t help but think of the above mentioned top troubles, except, this time round we were dealing with a high fashion heavyweight, Balmain. Yes, you know the brand with ballsy price tags and a whole lotta intricately embellished, hard-to-lift dresses and jackets? Making us gawk at its fine existence, and mentally battle out the possibilities of adding it to our wardrobes, is the Balmain embellished cotton-jersey T-shirt (£1,165). An all black affair, the slightly oversized t-shirt is decorated with sequins, crystals and strips of metallic faux patent-leather. Eyes already popping out? Read on to see this show-off tee’s basket-dropping credentials…  Yay Great alternative to an evening dress: Please your inner tomboy by slipping this t-shirt over leather leggings, and accessorising with killer heels and a clutch. What LBD? Classic colour: Black is always going to be ‘in’, regardless of how much colour and print Diane von Furstenberg throws at us every season! Timeless and chic, this t-shirt is guaranteed to go with almost anything in your wardrobe. Day-to-night investment: For work, pair with a blazer, smart pants and suede pumps. For after-work cocktails leading to the dance floor, ditch the blazer and swap the pumps for show-stopping sandals. Nay Price: A hefty price is certain for all Balmain pieces, so were not particularly shocked by the rather expected £1,165 price tag this t-shirt comes with. Although, were not too sure bank accounts are designed to absorb such financial shock… Faux leather trim: Hmpfh! Paying a grand […]

Paris Fashion Week SS14 highlights from Balmain, Lanvin, Nina Ricci & more

Last Updated on 7th October 2013 There was a lot of action in Paris yesterday, as spring/summer 2014 collections from Balmain, Lanvin, Nina Ricci, Balenciaga and Paco Rabanne hit the catwalks. Rosie Huntington Whiteley lent a helping hand to Balmain, as she closed the show in a beautiful sheer number which undoubtedly got all the red blooded males in the audience very excited. There was a lot less razzmatazz in the new-season collection; a conscious decision made by Olivier Rousteing who said that he wanted to see what the stereotypical Balmain girl (who loves her some eveningwear and partywear) looked like at 9 in the morning. A great concept – and one that we would definitely get on board with. Balmain for breakfast sounds like a great idea to us! Alber Elbaz made it all about the shine factor over at Lanvin, as models came out in shiny, mirrored garments – some of whom did so while carrying what looked like bin bags. Bin day has never been more glamorous! Reflection was also a very prominent theme on the Balenciaga catwalk, as models strutted up and down the runway with mirrors surrounding them – capturing their each and every move from a variety of angles. There was no chance of missing one of Alexander Wang’s creations with the mirrors there! The Balenciaga girl is a tad more sporty, active and casual this season. Zoe Saldana bold in Balmain for Star Trek Into Darkness premiere

Last Updated on 1st May 2013 Apart from finally getting to watch the actual film, the thing we’ve been looking forward to the most about the Star Trek Into Darkness release is Zoe Saldana’s red carpet appearances for the respective premieres and photocalls. The stunning actress seldom fails to impress us with her killer bod and wow factor outfits, and the Berlin movie premiere was no different as she donned a rich, bold Balmain number from the pre-fall 2013 collection which inevitably turned heads as she arrived. It’s a bit of a busy outfit in terms of print and colour, but we definitely think she pulled it off with her sleek, swept back hair, minimal make-up (save for some essential dark liner and shadow around the eyes) and lack of accessories. And her perfect pins seem to go on for days, nay weeks, which is always a plus in anyone’s books! Do you like Zoe’s outfit or is there too much going on for you?

Paris Fashion Week AW13 highlights from Balenciaga, Balmain, Lanvin, H&M and more

Last Updated on 1st March 2013 Another day in Paris and another host of top designers debuting their autumn/winter 2013 collections on the French catwalks. There have been quite a few first these past 24 hours too, in the form of H&M’s first runway show in eight years, as well as Alexander Wang’s highly anticipated debut collection for Balenciaga. Mr Wang proved that he was indeed the right man for the coveted job, juxtaposing and balancing the creations more commonly found in his eponymous label with those of Balenciaga quite flawlessly. The high street has been more prominent this Fashion Month than ever before (Rihanna for River Island, Whistles, Topshop Unique to name just a few) and we’re hoping that H&M will see how successful the show has been and continue to present its collections in Paris. We’d prefer London, but we won’t be too fussy as we’re just glad it’s getting a Fashion Month outing at all! There was plenty of sparkle, as well as some big shoulders, bold lines, vivid colours and exaggerated structured  silhouettes at Balmain – one of our PFW highlights every season – while Mugler opted for a much softer and subtler approach to drama than usual. As always, Alber Elbaz presented a chic and clean collection for Lanvin, while Gareth Pugh took the term “haunting” to new depths. Take a look at the highlights below: H&M Balmain  Mugler Lanvin Gareth Pugh

Miranda Kerr blows us away in Balmain

Last Updated on 9th November 2012 Shame on you if you thought the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show catwalk was the last time the Angels were going to get glammed up for a while. The models continued to unleash everyone’s inner green-eyed monsters as they hit up the pink carpet for the well-deserved after party! While all of the Victoria’s Secret Angels looked just as phenomenal as they did on the runway, the one who stood out the most was Miranda Kerr. The yummy mummy made our jaws drop when she arrived on the carpet in a stunning figure-hugging and dangerously plunging black silk dress from the Balmain spring/summer 2013 collection. The shoulder pads and her mesh Jimmy Choo shoes and studded clutch bag added to the overall sexiness of the look – as did her brunette tumbling waves, golden, bronzed pins… we could go on for weeks. Which incidentally is exactly what we would say about aforementioned pins… A stunning woman deserving of those Victoria’s Secret Angel wings!

Kim Kardashian vs. Fergie in Balmain

Last Updated on 19th October 2013 Is it a dress or a tuxedo jacket?  Well, that’s not really important here because we’re concerning ourselves with which style maven wore it better! Welcome to this week’s fash off between two fashionable ladies who know how to command the camera in whatever they wear. Black Eyed Peas’ Fergie and Cali queen Kim Kardashian stepped out in the same Balmain stretch tuxedo dress a day apart, and as expected, both put their own spin on it! Fergie made an outing in the Balmain number first, as she was papped arriving at a New York Fashion Week event thrown by Case-Mate. Teaming her tux dress with pointed black pumps and a black cami top worn underneath, Fergie sported her trademark glossy curls and a slick of serious red on her nails. After taking on board rapper beau Kanye’s advice we’ve seen Kim sporting many a sombre ensemble. And this outing in a sharp tux dress is no exception, considering she was on a date night with Mr. West! Kim wore the tuxedo dress with Gianvito Rossi ankle strap sandals, and opted for a risqué look by pinning the lapels high up and going sans cami underneath. We absolutely love the slick silhouette and power shoulders, and although usually expensive, we just can’t resist a sharp Balmain number that’s as hot on the bod as it is on the money! Both Fergie and Kim look exceptional in such a simple yet statement making outfit, and we love that it was styled in a fuss free way, but there can only be one fash off champion… Fash off champion: Kim, although we do love your (courtesy-of-Kanye) wardrobe-over, this one goes to Fergie! Classy and super-stylish all rolled into one, we love how Fergie makes this androgynous piece […]

Alessandra Ambrosio slips on her Balmain armory…

Struggling for something to wear for the office Christmas party? How about this plunging metallic embroidered number from Balmain? Yeah ok, it might look completely overboard on ordinary civilians but you have to admit, on supermodels like Alessandra Ambrosio, it does look rather spectacular. Alessandra blew everyone in the room away when she turned up at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show viewing party in California wearing this darling and extravagant dress. Signature Balmain, it was structured, highly detailed and had those wonderful metallic touches. We love the armory-feel to the dress and its ultra fashion-forwardness. Totally decadent and undoubtedly expensive but, as one of the world’s highest paid supermodels, we are sure this dress was just pocket money for Alessandra. She chose to pair it with a pair of nude Jimmy Choo platform heels and a neat little brown leather clutch bag from Valentino. It’s a tough life for these supermodels, huh? [poll id=”248″]

RTW Wanderer: Balmain leather Motorcross pants

Last Updated on 10th June 2016 So autumn’s fetish trend is upon us, and these delicious skinny leather Motocross pants from Balmain will fit in perfectly. What I love about these trousers is their ability to channel Balmain’s edgy-luxe aesthetic so effortlessly. Without being try-hard or OTT, just pull them on alongside that black oversized slouchy tee, a heavy wool jumper and accompanying pencil heels to work that glam-rock appeal. There is one minor – nay, major – hitch, however: the price tag. Now, I’d be willing to invest £300 in something so delightfully luxe as these, but when you times this by 10 (yes, really) I’d fail miserably and have to say a very definite and precise “no”. Shame, because I REALLY WANT THEM (apparently shouting isn’t going to change anything, though).   Balmain Leather Skinny Motorcross Pants, £3000, available at Net-a-Porter.

Who will replace Christophe Decarnin at Balmain?

Last Updated on 19th October 2013 This season is going to be remembered not for trends or style icons, but as the season of the great creative reshuffle. First Galliano was fired from Dior under the shadow of scandal, spelling rumours of a major swap-around in the luxury French fashion houses, and just yesterday it was announced that another of the greats has jumped ship as Christophe Decarnin parted ways with Balmain. The French designer, who joined the label in 2005, is widely credited as the strength behind Balmain, lifting both prices and designs to new heights, and inspiring Balmania among celebs and the fashion world with his fierce designs. Although his departure hasn’t attracted the same sense of shock as Galliano’s, rumours are rife as to what has prompted the split. Most sources suggest the designer’s recent absence from his AW11 show, blamed on exhaustion, was actually masking a deeper emotional health crisis. But it’s also possible that his leaving has a lot to do with creative differences between Decarnin and Balmain CEO Alain Hivelin (how many ripped tees and power leather can one really wear?), or that the designer’s enthusiasm was lost after unofficial Balmain ambassador and supportive friend Emmanuelle Alt left the brand to take the helm at Vogue Paris. Either way, there’s opening at Balmain for one of the biggest feats in fashion, and the question on everyone’s lips is who’s going to get it. We’ve highlighted the favourite front-runners for the job (and yes, the same names rumoured for Dior are cropping up here, too) – see below for the candidates tipped for the post. 1. Melanie Ward Who: Balmain’s stylist Why: Fashionista tips Ward as the most likely replacement. Following Emmanuelle Alt’s departure, über-stylist Ward stepped in to cover styling duties at Balmain, and […]

Kate Beckinsale in Balmain

It’s rather apt that Kate Beckinsale was attending the premier of ‘Biutiful’ as she wore this dress at Cannes this week, because she does indeed look b-e-a-utiful in this Balmain stunner. Taken from the Balmain AW10 collection, the thigh-high split and navel revealing plunge neckline have been tamed down a little to reveal a little less skin than the catwalk version – and doesn’t it look great. Shimmering in black with a metallic studded belt Kate shows us a more edgy side than we’re used to and it’s a look that she really pulls off. Her relaxed up-do brings a laid-back sophistication to the ensemble and the thigh-high split adds a dash of sexiness to an otherwise classic look. If we’ve got any criticism at all it would be that her pumps look a little clunky to be paired with the sleekness of the floor length dress. But if that’s the only thing we’re not convinced on then Kate doesn’t have too much to worry about, and we still think she had the best look of the night. Yet more proof that Balmain maketh the woman…
