Trends move really, really fast – they’ll come in suddenly (probably taking you by surprise), and for a little while everyone just wants the same thing when it comes to their clothing choices. And then, just when you start getting used to it all, something else comes along and that idea is over and done with.

If you try to keep up with it all, you’re just going to end up totally exhausted, and in the end, that’s one of the main reasons why it’s your personal style that matters more than anything else.

The fact is, personal style grows and changes as you grow and change, and it’s never going to be dictated by a marketing campaign or whatever’s in the shop windows.

It’s actually something you’ll build up slowly without even realising it, often with a bit of trial and error along the way, but you’ll keep coming back to the same outfits over and over. With that in mind, keep reading to find out more about why personal style matters more than trends.

Trends Don’t Know You

The biggest problem with all these trends is that they’re never designed for individuals, they’re designed for everyone all at once, and they’re basically just there to grab attention and them move on, making people want what’s next and so on and so forth.

In other words, trends can never take your lifestyle into account, or your personality, your job, how things make you feel and how comfortable they are, etc.

Personal style, on the other hand, does do that – it does exactly that, which is the point. You’ll know what makes you feel good (and look good), and what colours and cuts suit you best, because you’ve tried out a variety of things and eventually landed on the right ideas for you.

And when you stop always going after trends it actually very freeing because you’ll get to choose what you want to wear rather than what ‘they’ tell you to.

Style Comes From Understanding Yourself

You’ll probably know this from first hand experience, but the truth is that most people have things in their wardrobes that they just reach for over and over again – perhaps without really thinking about it. They’re the things that are comfortable and just work, even if they’re not particularly fashionable anymore (if they ever were).

So it might be time to take a look at those items you’ve got and see if there’s anything about them that connects them, like the cut, colour, fabric, or anything else. That way, you’ll get a good understanding of what you like and you’ll get an idea about yourself, and that’s going to help when you want to buy anything in the future – you’ll save a lot of time if you already know exactly what you want.

So rather than having to ask if something is in or out, just stick with the things that work for you, and you’ll never have an issue – you’ll be happy and comfortable, and you’ll know you look and feel good, and that’s going to give you a much better end result (and probably more confidence) than something trendy would if it’s not something you’d normally buy or wear.

Stories Are Better Than Trends

There are also some items that can quickly becomes favourites in your style and wardrobe because of the stories they have, rather than (or at least as well as) their overall design.

That could be a ring someone bought decades or even centuries ago, for example, or a special scarf a grandparent bought you once upon a time, or perhaps a souvenir from a trip, and so on. You’ll want to keep – and wear – these pieces because of what they mean to you, rather than how they look, so it actually doesn’t matter if they match with anything else or not – you’re going to wear them anyway.

That’s actually part of the reason why older pieces just feel so special, and even something like antique jewellery with its own history (even if that history is hidden) can be worth investing in if it’s something you fall in love with.

If you do, you’ll be wearing something that’s so much more than just a piece of pretty jewellery – you’ll be wearing something that tells a story, and that’s very special indeed.

Style Happens Slowly And That’s A Good Thing

There’s a truth in life that can’t be ignored – people change and lives change. And because people and lives change, style tends to change as well, but it happens bit by bit, slowly, so you probably don’t notice it’s happened right away. But the more you pay attention to what feels good and what doesn’t, the easier it’s going to be to keep yourself happy and comfortable when it comes to what you choose to wear.

Trends, of course, don’t change with you at all, they just jump from thing to thing and idea to idea, and don’t take anything else into account – and it happens quickly. Personal style moves at your own pace, however you want it to, so it’s not stressful or confusing, you won’t have to keep spending money updating your wardrobe, and you can relax and feel like yourself as much of the time as possible.

The Confidence You Get From Wearing What Feels Right

There’s a massive difference between looking stylish and feeling stylish – after all, trends can definitely help you look up to date, but if you’re not comfortable and don’t like the clothes you’re wearing, you’re not going to feel all that good, are you?

And you’re certainly not going to feel confident. In the end, confidence tends to come from wearing things you’re comfortable in, and that basically feels natural on your body and fits your lifestyle, rather than making things difficult for you, like some fashionable clothes can.

When your outfit is all about who you are, trendy or not, you’re automatically going to be a lot more confident, and you’ll stop worrying about whether people think you’re fashionable and start focusing on how you feel instead, and that’s always the right option to take.
