Carey Mulligan rocks Lanvin for Great Gatsby world premiere

All eyes were on Carey Mulligan last night, as the actress attended the world premiere of The Great Gatsby in New York. Seeing as Miuccia Prada designed no less than 40 pieces for the Baz Luhrmann film, we would have bet quite a hefty sum of money that the leading lady would be wearing a Prada or Miu Miu number, but she surprised everyone by opting to wear Lanvin instead. What do you think of her decision? Yes, it’s a bit of a shock, but we can see why she went for the red hot Lanvin piece – Carey looks absolutely sensational. Carey’s minimal look is worlds away from her styling in the film; instead of adding a chunky or sparkly necklace or bracelet to her look, the actress kept all accessories to a minimum, letting the dress do all the talking. “Almost none were meant to be Twenties when I did them” – Miuccia Prada on her Great Gatsby costumes

Not long to go until The Great Gatsby hits the big screen now, which means it won’t be long ‘til we see all the dresses Miuccia Prada created for the film. The designer reportedly dug up 40 dresses from the Prada and Miu Miu vault and adapted them accordingly, but how did she go about selecting the looks for the Baz Lurhmann film? “When I read the book, it was psychological. It was not about glamour for me,” she said. “It was a real study of personality, very internalised. “It was meant to be about light. It became about money, because Luhrmann wanted to show her as the most beautiful and rich woman on earth.” The designer also confessed that although the costumes now have a 20s feel to them, she didn’t necessarily have that era in mind when she first designed them for the respective Prada and Miu Miu collections… “The point of view can transform things so much,” she continued. “Almost none were meant to be Twenties when I did them. Beyonce’s Back to Black Great Gatsby cover slated by Amy Winehouse’s dad

When we heard that Beyonce would be covering the late Amy Winehouse’s iconic song Back to Black for the upcoming The Great Gatsby film, we had mixed feelings. It won’t take a genius to work out that we love Beyonce, but we weren’t sure how well a cover version – which she created with André 3000 – would go down with Amy’s fans and family. And it appears we were right…. “I don’t think she brings anything to it,” Mitch said about the cover version “I wasn’t asked for my permission if they could record it. They have got to pay for the privilege, which is what they are doing. It was a busy weekend in Milan, with the likes of Versace, Roberto Cavalli, Jil Sander, Dolce and Gabbana and Bottega Veneta all unveiling their new autumn/winter 2014 collections to their adoring public. Dolce and Gabbana AW14 Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were inspired by all things dream-like for their ‘Enchanted Sicily’ Dolce and Gabbana autumn/winter 2014 collection. Despite the intricacy of the pieces and the overall new season vision, the collection was very simplistic, with medieval influences creeping through every so often. Bold, exaggerated shoulders, woodland inspired prints throughout as well as flower and key embellishments, and even a new type of handbag that even requires a padlock; it was all in there! Our highlight was definitely the finale, as this time round we were treated to a parade of sparkly yet somewhat gothic Tinkerbells strutting down the catwalk. Can you get on board with looking like a gothic fairy for the new season? The Dolce and Gabbana boys certainly make it look appealing don’t they? Versace AW14 Donatella Versace also pulled out all the stops for the Versace autumn/winter 2014 show – no surprises there, really. “This is a collection about the power of a woman, not just her inner strength, but the attitude she presents to the world. We challenge you to track down a dress by the Dolce boys that fails to send hearts aflutter! The latest two ladies, one dress situation making us swoon over lashings of signature lace and floral print comes courtesy of red carpet darlings Sienna Miller and Isla Fisher. First up to slip into the pretty-sexy gown was Isla Fisher, who took to the red carpet for the world premiere of The Great Gatsby back in May. Accessorising with a Roger Vivier clutch and her trademark strawberry blonde barnet, swept elegantly to one side; a slick of red on the lips completed Isla’s stunning look. But catching up in the style stakes was Brit lady Sienna Miller, who sported a midi version of the same gown to celebrate The Global Fun at the Aspley House, last month. Carrying a leopard print box clutch, and ditching heels for pointed slingback flats, Sienna’s look was topped of with nude makeup, and her famed mussed up glossy hair, worn casually down. Naomi Campbell opens Atelier Versace’s Couture show

Nothing makes a bigger statement like getting one of the world’s biggest supermodels to open the Couture show of one of the biggest fashion House’s in Italy, nay, the world. And that’s exactly what Versace did by tapping Naomi Campbell for the Atelier Versace AW13 Couture show in Paris yesterday. It was the first time Naomi walked a Versace catwalk since Gianni Versace’s death back in 1997, so her appearance was a pretty big deal! Well, most Naomi appearances are, but none more so than this! Donatella Versace was inspired by black and white photography of the 1930s, which she then added her own contemporary twist to… a theme which is more than evident when looking at the colour palette and the Great Gatsby nod throughout the collection. The attention to detail is second to none, as is expected from a Versace catwalk outing, and the sparkles, glitz, glamour – not to mention the amount of flesh on display – was very abundant. The finale piece was without a doubt a favourite in the MFL office; do we think any of the celebs in the front row – the likes of which included Emma Roberts and Uma Thurman – might pull it off on a red carpet? After a flurry of stunning looks for her The Great Gatsby promo tour, Carey Mulligan took time out to reset the red carpet record with a complete blackout. Attending the BOSS autumn/winter 2013 menswear and womenswear show in Shanghai earlier this week, Carey’s style was a lesson in androgyny, far removed from the super-feminine looks she’s been sporting of late. Carey wore a BOSS blazer, bustier top and tailored trousers, accessorising with Brian Atwood Aida heels and a slick of warm red on her lips. A glowing complexion and chicly swept back up do finished off this rather simple yet striking look, effectively. Nicole Kidman is Best Dressed of the Week in Christian Dior Couture

Undoubtedly, the words on the lips of the sartorial circuit this week are something like Cannes Film Festival. We’ve waxed lyrical with our highlights from day one and two, and we’re not about to stop. Stealing the BDOTW spotlight this week is none other than the gorgeous Nicole Kidman, who wowed us not just with her age-defying looks on the Cannes red carpet (that woman has magical skin!), but every ensemble she pulled out of the bag. Although we wanted to be greedy and profile her every look so far, we chose the one that particularly stood out for us; a strapless floral-embroidered dress from the Christian Dior Spring 2013 Couture collection she wore to the The Great Gatsby premiere at the festival. Making us hyperventilate at the thought of sporting (much, much cheaper) summer florals, Nicole’s breathtaking couture gown was accented to perfection by coral Dior pumps, a pop of colour on the lips and a slick high ponytail. She’s already a Cannes red carpet favourite of ours, but we just couldn’t help crown her Best Dressed, too! We’re pretty sure you won’t disagree either.

Cannes Film Festival 2013: Day 1 highlights

Let’s put it this way – everyone on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet looked ruddy fantastic! Instead of inundating you with every single look from the glamorous carpet, we’ll be bringing you our ultimate favourite looks from each day. Day 1 obviously attracted quite the well-dressed bunch of celebs, so we had a bit of a tough time narrowing down our faves. Freida Pinto definitely secures one of our best-dressed spots, as she oozed class and glamour in a floor-length, hot pink number designed by Gucci. An elegant red carpet appearance if ever there was one! Nicole Kidman also gets a mention in her three-quarter length Christian Dior Couture number as she was one of the brightest stars on the red carpet. Way to make a statement and embrace the season! Also wearing Christian Dior Couture was Carey Mulligan, and she definitely deserves a place on our list because we reckon this is the first time she has truly wowed on the red carpet while promoting The Great Gatsby. She always looks good don’t get us wrong, but we think this is a jaw-dropping, defining style moment on her Great Gatsby promo mission. Simple, elegant, bold – and we love the longer locks! Lana Del Rey looked like a true vintage goddess in her monochrome embellished dress – she definitely paid close attention to the Gatsby-inspired glamour theme, and we can’t fault her old Hollywood curls and flawless make-up! Bring on Day 2!

After overloading on Met Ball dresses, and taking in as many The Great Gatsby premiere outfits as we could, we’ve decide to tone things down for this week’s Best Dressed. Going over to the personal red carpet that unfolds before Victoria Beckham’s every heel-shod step (well, it does in our minds), she’s really blown us away with a series of show-stopping, off and on duty outfits this week. First up, spotted out for lunch in Paris, VB looked a day-off-dresser’s dream in high-waisted jeans and a tucked in grey tee. But it’s when we spot her in her own collection that we really fall in love with this lady’s refined style all over again! Arriving at JFK airport, Victoria sported a chic, tri-block colour ensemble of orange wide-leg trousers (we can ear them screaming summer at us), a crisp white shirt and a knee-length black coat. Sophistication defined, we’ve never know airport attire to look so polished. Finishing of this delicious trio of unforgettable looks was Mrs B’s ‘power look’; a purple, front-slit skirt and brown keyhole detail blouse from her autumn/winter 2013-14 collection. Stepping out after a meeting at Bergdorf Goodman, this outfit was sure to seal the deal (not that VB needs much assistance in the business department). Yes, you read that right. We’ve stepped into this week’s fash-off with bated breath, because it really is so important. And scary. Last week, at a screening of The Great Gatsby in New York, two fashion gods were united in the same Prada spring/summer 2013 coat. *Cue awkward cough/shuffle* Anna Wintour, who is viewed as nothing less than the Queen Bey of the fashion world (we mean that in power, not booty, terms), would have you believe she has a firm grip over the who-wears-what at high profile events where she is in attendance, ensuring that she is the only one wearing a particular piece from the latest runway collection. Yet, upon coming face-to-face with Marc Jacobs in the exact same look, we figure the expression on both their faces reads something like this: ‘Have we, I mean WE committed the ultimate fashion faux pas?’ But regardless of this sartorial mishap, the most awkward question is yet to come: who do you think wore Prada better? Naturally, Wintour went her signature elegant way, with dainty heels and a pristine bob, whilst Jacobs brought the fun to Prada (not that Prada needs it ) with printed socks and sneakers. Utterly versatile, the blazer is both our go-to for that all important job interview and our ante-upper when we’re looking to dress up a pair of jeans. A good blazer really does carry serious fashion mileage, and that’s why we think it’s only right to invest in a good quality piece at the beginning of a new season to see us through all situations – from the office to the dancefloor! London Fashion Week SS12: Spijkers en Spijkers

She’s been hitting the tents at Somerset House as a guest fashion reporter for My Fashion Life to cover as many of London’s spring shows as she can make – find out how she got on when we armed her with a bag full of tickets and sent her packing… Who: Spijkers en Spijkers What: A fairytale-inspired collection of desirable silk dresses and tailored pieces featuring Oriental geometric prints and an evocative delivery of colour that the label is becoming well-known for. Highlights: The diamond-print black and Sahara beige silk dresses and tailored jumpsuits, teamed with oversized, slouchy blazers. Lowlights: The tweed blazer and trouser set that featured at the end of the show looked oddly out of place with the rest of the collection. Overall: The dutch design sisters returned to London to deliver a strong show this season that captured both the Eastern spirit of Arabian Nights and the wonder of vintage Western tales such as The Great Gatsby. Lime yellow and bright coral star and diamond shapes featured on sumptuous silk dresses, worn with low-slung side ponytails and thick tied headscarves. The ethereal sounds of Bjork echoed through the classically ornate room as the dresses and soft blazers billowed softly, evoking a desert fairytale set in warmer, more exotic climes – the dream summer mood. Gaping backs framed with T-bar beaded straps and flapper fringing completed a feminine and highly desirable collection.
